Hi John. Many thanks for this solution. I just used it on 3 timers I had hooked up to a 3 way valve. You were dead right. There was a gap between the white wheel and the black piece. Unscrewed white from black on all of them and now all of them are good and I didn't have to spend $90 replacing them. BTW I must have spend on hour on hold with Orbit support and finally gave up.
Wow! Awesome! I hadn't used my timer in years and thought the batteries were just dead. I replaced them and it still didn't work. I was going to toss the timer in the garbage and buy a new one when I found this video. Thank you!!
While my timer didn't freeze, it was leaking. I found no debris, but just opening the valve up cleaning it and reassembling it did the trick. No more leaking. Thank you.
Great vid John. Let me add some info. My timer has external valves that go in line with your hose. The valves are connected to the timer with a wire that plugs into the timer. You can have up to four valves controlled by the timer. The separate external valves have exactly the same setup as your video shows. I had the same problem with my two valves. I popped the housing apart, saw the white part separated so I did the same thing you did. It worked for a day than blew out again. This time I added Teflon tape, screwed the parts back together, then put lots of hot glue around the parts and housing. I think there are different hot glues. My system melts the glue sticks at a very hot temp (it will burn you badly) and the glue hardens and is somewhat elastic. Works great.
Another related issue that I had with 2 of these was junk/dirt on the battery connections. I went to Home Depot planning on buying new timers and was told this might be the problem. Just take the battery holder out, steel-wool the 2 connection points, put a thin film of dielectric grease on the contacts, (this will prevent future corrosion - the stuff isn't cheap so I'd just add it if you have some), and both of mine worked like new. Annoying problem since I disconnect mine during the winter and they were only a year or two old. So this simple fix was good info from the HD guy.
Thanks John you just saved me £70! Mine is a twin version and yes I left it out in the freezing weather in England. I'll try to remember to bring it in next year. Cheers
This was just the fix I needed. While mine wasn't leaking, it was running extremely slowly. This fix allowed me to take apart the controller, unclog the black water feed and then reassemble. Thanks for saving me $30!
It's useful instruction. Mine is model 56865. I took out the white plastic dial carefully and screwed it back. It works and no more leaking. Thanks, Jon!
This is a great video. Fixed the timer wonderfully. I had to take it apart twice because I didn't tighten the parts back together well enough, and it popped apart again. So, on the second try, I put several layers of plumbers tape on the threads. Then I tightened it back together very securely. Worked like a charm. No leaks, and don't have to buy another timer. Thank You.
The valve on my almost new unit sticks open. It will not close leading to constant flow and a flooded garden. A second unit, slightly older now does the same thing. Is there any place I can purchase just the black tube with valve enclosed? The whole thing comes apart easily. I hate to throw away a perfectly good, electronically, a unit just for a sticking valve inside the black tube.
That is very peculiar that you would have that problem twice Anything can happen once But Twice??? If your electronically competent It would be good to keep those The only thing that has ever gone wrong with mine is the electronics eventually go out And I have no way of doing it I am not electronically competent I have about 30 of them and never had the problem you are saying I would just go buy another one There's no way in hell that will ever happen again to you
@@SForster26 I’ve had the same ring with at least three this year. I think the valve sticks open because of sediment from the water caked up on it. If I could just figure out how to clean it out occasionally I bet that would prevent it. My irrigation system runs for days at a time before I notice it some times
the focus issue you're having is from holding the camera too close to your subject. Every lens/camera combo has a minimum focus distance. If you want to show what you're doing close up, try holding the camera further back, but zooming in.
Tnx for posting Jon! I hooked my Orbit up today and it leaked like a sieve out both drain holes at the bottom. I was ready to order a new one on Amazon bug decided to google a bit first. Found this vid that solved my problem. When I opened my Orbit up, it looked just like yours. I wrapped the white threads with a few layers of teflon tape too in case the threads got buggered a bit when they popped outta the black fitting. Screwed it back on with my water pump pliers and brought it up tight to the black fitting. I screwed it back on the spigot and it worked just fine! Thank you very much! It only took me 15 minutes and it saved me $30 at Home Depot/Lowes/Amazon.
Interesting and informative repair video. Be aware that if these are to be stored in freezing temperatures/over winter, you must empty the internal solenoid water by removing timer from hoses and SETTING THE TIMER TO OPEN the valve to allow you to blow by mouth, the residual water from the internal solenoid. Just shaking it after removing hoses will not drain internal solenoid. It's surprising how much water you will blow out. Approx. 4-5 ml came out of mine. Enough to crack or push out that plastic housing solenoid if frozen into a confined space.
I will leave your message I have 13 of these things Had them for over 15 years I have never once done what you said to do If I had I wouldn't have to repair it every other time Your information is valuable I probably still won't use it But hopefully others will Thank you brother
Thank you! I have the 3 port timer with one of the ports (port 2) leaking when not in use. After opening it up I noticed that the white wheel was set properly (no gap). I suspected some debris, or possible issue with the small plunger pin. After unthreading the wheel (was a bit of a challenge, due to all the thin copper wire blocking port 2), I found and removed a small piece of iron debris inside the chamber. Just saved $90 (Canuk pessos) by not having to buy a new one. Cheers!!
Good video. My issue was a little different but, this showed me how to remove solenoid. Water was just dripping out. Diaphragm in solenoid was plugged with rust. (Go figure, everything is plastic and rubber) Scraped rust off and used a paper clip to open hole and all was good!
THANK YOU, Jon Hughes!!!!!!! Exactly what I needed to know. Worked like a charm! In fact, when I opened the case and saw the same gap, I was super psyched. Worth noting that these things are amazingly sturdy--mine takes a beating every winter; I've had it four years and it's still chugging along.
Hi John. It seems like they did upgrade it a bit but still same problem. Just took mine apart, blow my mind that they can’t think of putting a o-ring in there to prevent this. I’m going to try some silicon to seal it.
You can try anything I guess but I wouldn't do that if I was going to try anything I would try to remove it from the system and let it dry out before the freeze comes and then it shouldn't have any issues it shouldn't be hooked up or have any water in it when the freeze comes that's when it blows
Jon, Thanks for the info. I had the same problem, but wet the electronics because a lot of water got in through the battery compartment. I could not open the electronics housing. It is dead?
Yeah probably You could always try opening up as much as possible and keep it in the house and in the warmth and perhaps eventually it will dry up but it's probably dead
Great vid! Thanks. My problem is it goes on for a second then just shuts off before I can reset time, etc. Batteries tested good, but I replaced them with new ones. I cleaned the terminals with alcohol. Still no luck. Timer is about 12-18 months old. TIA
I got the same problem with a brand new microwave everything works perfect It's brand new except the digital display It will not read so I can't do anything with it unless I just wing it
Thanks for this! Surprised how simple these are inside. Unfortunately, mine popped again the first time using it. Threads might be shot. Gave it one last go with some silicone sealant. No chance I'll ever be able to fix it again, but maybe it'll do the job permanently? Fingers crossed. An epoxy may have made more sense as I'm trying to keep the threads stuck rather than seal a leak. 🤷♂️
Also you can get debris in the rubber valve. Given I have irrigation water. The white wheel was tight and fine. I took it apart and found each disc that had an issue had a small piece of debris, but this doesn't affect it running, it affects it shutting off completely and not leaking out the hose. Easy way to tell, blow through the main hose connection, and you cover all ports but one, and do for each and you can figure which is passing air, so ergo it leaks when water is on. And leak I mean at the sprinkler end so you can get large puddles!
My orbit has a metal, connector to tap and it leaks nearest the actual unit not the tap as it is not sitting snugly. Every restriction you put on water will make it come out less Check that there's no noticeable clog And then just set the timer for longer to adjust for the reduction
Mine doesn't leak, it makes a noise like it's opening the valve to let the water run through it but the valve never opens. Can that be fixed? I am in California where we don't worry about winter an freezing.
My guess is that the black housing for the valve assembly is cracked. If freezing forced the threads to pop, it may have actually cracked the housing and thus popped the treads... just saying. With the white male thread removed, apply some pressure with those channel-locks in two or three radial directions and you might just be able to see the crack wink at you. Not too much pressure or you will cause another problem. Hope it helps.
This is the solution that finally worked for me. The spring on the solenoid pin weakened with age (or exposure to heat) and would not hold the interior rubber diaphragm closed completely, allowing water to drip through the black plastic tube. Stretching the spring solved the problem, at least temporarily. Requires more disassembly and fiddling around, but cheaper than buying a new unit.
I am having the same problem with the white part popping out of the black one. I was thinking about teflon tape and super glue. But if the hot glue is holding that might work better. What kind of hot glue did you use? Thanks Ken
My problem is that the low battery icon is showing, change batteries and it turns on...clicks three times and turns off again. Opened it up and my white things seem to be glued to the black part...or in any case there are no gaps. Put it back together...cleaned off the battery connection and it did the same thing.
Thanks, Jon. I am going to try this right away. I have a 2 valve one. Just wondering if anyone has tried to re-tighten and put PVC cement glue on and around the threads?
Mine was displaying. Ur wouldn’t go to manual per instructions of orbit , so tried changing batteries and display went totally off ! Now what ? Didn’t have low battery display anyway …
Thanks for the vid. But mine leaked, the numbers started not fully displaying and it wouldn't turn off. Opened it up and I see no gap whatsoever. Is there anything else I could try?
its called focus. Lenses normally do not focus that closely. If you want to focus very close - use a macro lens. also - many cell phones focus pretty close
Mine completely stopped responding to the dial and I took it apart after seeing this just to see if there was something mechanical that I could see and I bent the contacts on the back of the dial upward and it fixed the problem.
I was hoping you would show how how to change the "black" piece. Mine just broke at the nozzle. I think with your video though, I can figure it out. Thank you for the video, maybe if you make more videos get a tripod, generally $5 at good will!
So my problem is odd....my orbit timer can be heard clicking open and normally the water would begin to enter the line, but it doesn't. However, if I closed the water faucet off, and slowly, slowly begin to open it the water will start to travel through and do it's job. The orbit valve will shut the water properly, but when the next timer cycle begins no water will travel through. The time is hooked up to a garden faucet and drip lines. This timer has two, A, and B valves.
@@PL-qw2gy took it apart, and couldn't even see a problem...couldn't put it back together...in the trash it went. Bought a newer model. I think maybe the freezing Temps could have been its undoing in the winter though.
Probably too late for Joe but maybe somebody else will be helped. If I understand them, the valves (one type anyway) have a spring inside of them that pushes the plunger closed and keeps the water "off". The timer powers up the solenoid and that PULLS the plunger AGAINST the spring and the water pressure and opens up the water for you. At the end of the cycle, it PUSHES the plunger closed and is assisted by the power of the spring. If that solenoid is weak or if something (debris) is jammed in there, it won't be able to open unless you have the water pressure low or off. Of course, like the sprinkler, I may be all wet here! Just trying to figure this out myself. Cheers!
I'm sorry to hear that but if there's any other issue than the one I showed in this repair it can't be fixed this is the only issue that can actually be fixed every other issue..... . you just got to replace the unit
@@Jonehughes I did watch the video and the back cover was already removed. The model I have doesn't have screws in the back. Model 56619 by Orbit abs is 5 plastic looking things not screws.
Okay I take back my snarky comment 😂🤣 If you can't find any screws to separate it it's apparently not intended to ever open so you have to MacGyver it that means it is glued so if you can figure out a way to get it unglued and still be usable when you're done with it more power to you let us know
Fixed! Thanks to the video *AND* comments by posters. The video display had stopped working. It took a combination of tiny computer tools, Q-tips, lemon scented acetone (fingernail polish remover), an SOS pad and a makeup brush, but it's FIXED!
I'm having a different issue. Fresh batteries, timer set for 4 times a day at 20 minute cycles. It will run one cycle on automatic then stop. I can run a manual cycle and it works fine.
Mine was displaying. Ur wouldn’t go to manual per instructions of orbit , so tried changing batteries and display went totally off ! Now what ? Didn’t have low battery display anyway … I love your ending ! Jesus is indeed Lord of all ❤
Mine had one screw that was stripped. Fortunately just the one. I got it partially unscrewed, then just snapped the back off. It didn't break the back plate and since I have four good screws, was able to reassemble it tightly.
This is exactly what was wrong with my timer. It must have froze. I was able to pop the white thing back into the black thing just by squeezing them together with the channel locks.
@@jeffreybell436 I am having the same problem. NEVER been frozen - I even bring it in the house in the winter. The threads are so thin it is not holding. Any suggestions? kendart42@gmail.com
Why doesn't someone just make one that isn't made out of cheap Chinese plastic? I'm tired of feeling lucky to get one of these to work through a whole season, even after attaching/removing before any freeze issues. They're junk, don't have metal connectors, this leaking crap (which is why I'm here right now, got three I just tried to hook up and they're all jacked), screens go out, etc. I've probably already paid for an Orbit employee's retirement I've been through so many. The one that was working fine when I disconnected it last fall immediately leaked like a faucet when I hooked it up....which seems to be a motif. Someone at Orbit needs a swift kick in the ass.

Thanks for the vid. But mine leaked, the numbers started not fully displaying and it wouldn't turn off. Opened it up and I see no gap whatsoever. Is there anything else I could try?
Yeah you have to throw that 1 away when the digital goes out its gone
DUDE!! Just fixed 2 of 'em! Thanks so much!
Saved me $30!!
Thanks for making this video
its called focus.

Thank you !! God bless you :-)
I've done this twice. However both tines it fixed keak but then all the display lights come on and won't shut off.
The display cannot be fixed
It is time to get a new one
So my problem is odd....my orbit timer can be heard clicking open and normally the water would begin to enter the line, but it doesn't. However, if I closed the water faucet off, and slowly, slowly begin to open it the water will start to travel through and do it's job. The orbit valve will shut the water properly, but when the next timer cycle begins no water will travel through. The time is hooked up to a garden faucet and drip lines. This timer has two, A, and B valves.
This is my exact issue. Have you figured out what the problem is??
Cheers!
thanks for the help!
My connectors on the top have cracked....Cany those be replaced?
ruclips.net/video/8iWWwhwiCb8/видео.html
What if you put teflon tape on the white thing threds.
There is no reason too
It wouldn't help
It never leaks from there ,
unless it's broken open from a freeze
Any idea why my clock runs too fast?
I'm sorry to hear that
but if there's any other issue
than the one I showed in this repair
it can't be fixed
this is the only issue
that can actually be fixed
every other issue.....
.
you just got to replace the unit
Perfect solution!!!
How do you remove the back?
you Need to watch the video
there are six screws
@@Jonehughes I did watch the video and the back cover was already removed. The model I have doesn't have screws in the back. Model 56619 by Orbit abs is 5 plastic looking things not screws.
Okay I take back my snarky comment
😂🤣
If you can't find any screws to separate it it's apparently not intended to ever open so you have to MacGyver it
that means it is glued so if you can figure out a way to get it unglued and still be usable when you're done with it
more power to you
let us know
@@Jonehughes Thanks. You should be a little bit more professional in your replies if you are to help someone.
Thank you for sharing!! It’s really helpful
Mine was displaying. Ur wouldn’t go to manual per instructions of orbit , so tried changing batteries and display went totally off ! Now what ? Didn’t have low battery display anyway … I love your ending ! Jesus is indeed Lord of all ❤
If the display is bad there's nothing you can do only time I've ever had to replace him is when my displays went bad
I have a 4 port timers, impossible to get the back off. Same Orbit concept/device but 4 and this is the 2nd Orbit to go south. Sad.
Roger
If it is broken, then you have nothing to lose, open it up (probably glued if not screwed), and fix it.... let us know how it went
I have the same problem!
Mine had one screw that was stripped. Fortunately just the one. I got it partially unscrewed, then just snapped the back off. It didn't break the back plate and since I have four good screws, was able to reassemble it tightly.
Thank you. It was soaking wet. You must be right. It most likely is dead.
THANK YOU
This didn't work for me but was interesting. :)
Thanks! I will quit throwing them away.
Thanks for sharing this. Very informative.
Focus issue. I'll buy you a tripod so you can redo this.
Focus issue is frustrating
Hello, i am issie that it does not displayed cleay...even though i did change the AA batteries...
it needs to be replaced...sorry
This is exactly what was wrong with my timer. It must have froze.
I was able to pop the white thing back into the black thing just by squeezing them together with the channel locks.
Update. Each time it only holds for a few months. Even new ones that have never frozen pop lose.
@@jeffreybell436 I am having the same problem. NEVER been frozen - I even bring it in the house in the winter. The threads are so thin it is not holding. Any suggestions?

Focus man! Focus.
Hey man
tell us how you really feel :-)
Geez Jon..did you not watch the video after you made it? The entire video is out of focus...Big thumbs down
Damn robert, did you not feel bad about this comment after you made it? BIG thumbs down for your lack of self awareness lol
