Nice to meet you. I use to have a quilt shop that specialized in 19th century fabrics. One Saturday a month I had open stitching for counted cross stitchers. We had to close the shop in 2015 due to a medical emergency which we knew would take a while to recover from and we won’t be able to run the shop to our standards and take care of the health issues. I’m now in the process of getting back into cross stitching and learning to machine quilt so I can get all the shop samples finished. We’ve managed to get the shop counters that my husband made into the new sewing room and I’m trying to get everything organized now that the “fog of recovery” is beginning to lift. My favorite quilt block is the Log Cabin because so many things can be done with that block. Still love any quilt that looks old, my absolute favorite time period is 1860’s -1920’s. I love samplers also. My son in law says our house looks like a museum! I guess it’s a working one.

Oh, those hard medical and health challenges that slip in and change our lives! I'm so glad recovery is happening and you're now able to get back into the blessing of stitching and saving those shop counters to go into your sewing room. Yes, those old fabrics, warm colors and items with the Patina of age just make my heart happy! Thank you so much for watching and connecting with me!!

This video brought back sooo many memories of my sweet Mom who I also lost to dementia at a very young age (67). My mother was also very talented when it came to crafting/sewing…. It wasn’t until my sister and I were going through her things after she passed away when we found a hand pieced scrappy quilt top with just a little more piecing needed. We both had no idea that our mom quilted although she did the most amazing hand embroidery….we found several of her works and now we both have them framed I gifted that scrappy quilt top to my sister after I longarm quilted it after I finished piecing it. We both recognized many of the fabrics in it because they were from our childhood clothes/family members clothes and house linens that we remembered growing up. I’m the older sister so I’m happy to say I got my little sister addicted to quilting. Now I have a best friend sister that I love to share quilty things with.

Jo is my favorite quilter too. I have most of her books and have made some of the quilts. Also doing cross stitch but having trouble seeing the linen. I am enjoying you floss tubes. I lost my sister to dementia four years ago. I miss her everyday.

Bonnie, your such a blessing. You gush about your mom like I do. My mom was my best friend. I used to quilt, 37 years, i had to have surgery on my hands so holding the needle isn't easy going through all those layers. I have recently gotten back to stitch. Loving it. Thank goodness for magnification. I want to get my linen stash going. I don't have any now. So that's holding me back a bit. But it will happen. Thank you for sharing your beautiful heart stories. I too love Kim Diehl and Jo Morton!! I love the primitive traditional patterns and colors too. I'm in Michigan so we don't get fires but we get snow. Lake effect. Keeping you and your community in my prayers. Thank you sharing your faith. That's where our joy comes from none the less. Happy Stitching friend!!!

I have soooo much to learn from you :);) I am also empty nester, my husband runs a business and I do the books, but I have more time now for myself....Many years ago I did applications, it was like a club, every month they sent us everything to build the block and I finished but I know is not that well....like you ...it bring me memories that I was doing that while homeschooling my 2 kids and helping my husband with his businesses....at the same time I was a new christian so I was having bible school and enjoying so much with new friends. This time, with your help, I might improve quilting again. You brought tears to my eyes with the sweet story of your mom, and all I can say, God bless her for lettings us enjoy her daughter here and now. My mom was a seamstress , she started by teaching that at schools, but when my sister born she stayed home, then I came and dad left :( so she had no choice than sew for ppl to raise us, she also gave sewing classes twice a year at home, I have a love for sewing that started with her, and I know she is happy to see me doing it. She passed away at 55...so young....its been 35 she left us....but still my heart shrunk thinking about her and how I miss her. Anyways Joy Nevertheless...!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing your lovely story. My mom is in her last stage of Alzheimer’s and I can relate. I’m so glad there is a quilt video to watch that is not all about buying. I love that you repurpose and use the lovely fabrics your mom gifted you. I’m approaching 60 and I want to finish those UFO’s and work more on my renewed love for cross stitch which was my 1st hobby, like you in the 80’s.Thank you for your great videos.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you found me and enjoy my stories of my Mom and my stitching projects. Yes, I really try to use the beautiful supplies I already have to fit the projects I'm working on. I love that I have fabrics from both my sister and Mom as well as treasured fabrics I've collected to put something together that gives me pleasure. I know you must be struggling with grief as your Mom declines. It is such a heartbreaking process. I treasure the joy and the memories of when my Mom was whole and healthy and appreciate so much the care my Dad gave to keep her at home where she wanted to be.

Beautiful quilt behind you, and your other quilt pieces, the one your mom appliqués is gorgeous, what a wonderful keepsake! Losing are moms is very hard, I tear up almost everyday when I think of and miss my mom so much. It’s almost 6 years and my heart is broken. I know I will inherit a lot of my moms fabrics she collected fat quarters only because they were so pretty, she wasn’t a quilter but every time we would go to the Sew Craft show in are area she would say “oh Sandy isn’t that a pretty piece of fabric” and buy a few. We would have so much fun! I have some to that I bought, they are pretty to collect, I’m hoping to make more yo-yos , like I have been doing and make something to put on my bed.
Your such a gentle sweet person, If we lived near each other we would be friends.❤️

New subscriber. I, too, am a quilter who has gotten back into cross stitch after several years away. I couldn’t help but laugh when you said you do a modified big stitch quilting. A friend of mine was teaching a class after our guild meeting on big stitch quilting and I had told her I can’t do the big stitch quilting after years of my grandmother working with me to getting my stitches smaller and smaller. She came by to see how I was doing during the class, I thought I was doing so well. She said,”Wow, you really can’t do a big stitch.” 😳 Shelley now has her own flosstube, Proverbs31:22. I look forward to all your videos. Stay well.

Oh that's funny!! Another Little Big Stitcher! I really feel it helps with the strength of the quilting after seeing what is happening to my Mom's quilts. We spend so much time in the making of them, we want them to be used and last for as long as possible. So the FlossTube channel is called Proverbs31:22?

Bonnie you are just fabulous!! I could listen to you talk about stitching and quilting all day long. You are very inspiring and I adore your hand appliqué. I would love to try that some day. I’ve been a huge cross stitcher since 1982 and have dabbled in quilting the last two years. I can’t seem to improve much because I keep going back to cross stitch. I do love the basic quilts I’ve made though. I was crying right along with you listening to the stories of your mom and her quilting and always choosing joy! Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. I will truly look forward to your videos every week!!!

Love hearing your quilting stories. Our Mom's are so precious in teaching us to sew, and quilt. I had the pleasure of caring for my Mom in her last 5 years (in heaven 8.5 yrs) as I am a registered nurse now retired. My Mom never pieced a quilt but each winter put up a large quilt in her living room and hand quilted for other people. I was never able to get the hand quilting so have a long-arm quilting machine. I am a Kansas Trouble fan and a primitive fabric collector. I have toooo many UFO's, so hoping my retirement will get me going on finishing and getting quilt tops completed. I recently have started watching Studio 180 designs for tips and tricks to make my quilts better.

I’m so excited that you’re sharing quilt videos as well as cross stitch. I’m just coming back to stitching after many many years of focusing on quilting. I guess this world situation has us all making changes. I just finished the top of a Blackbird quilt that ended being a beautiful collaboration with my mother. She began the quilt but passed in 2011, being the only sewer in the family I received everything she left. It’s all appliqué and we both did something on every block. So when you talked about your mom I was tearing up with you. A sadness of missing these special people in our lives but such beautiful joy in the memories.

I have one I need to pass along to my niece, it wanted to share it first. Thank you for watching and your thoughtful comments!

It really touched my heart to listen to you speak about your Mom and Dad. We are a very small, close-knit family, and I fear and dread the day when I have to let go of one of my parents. I am so sorry for your loss. You have a beautiful outlook and sounds like you have so many treasured memories. The quilts are beautiful, and it seems you have very similar taste to mine. Among others, I love Kim Diehl's books and fabrics. I seem to collect more fabric and books than i get actual quilts accomplished, but just as with my cross stitch and other craft supplies, my fabric brings me as much joy as any of the finished projects I might have accomplished. Thank you for sharing your story and your beautiful quilts.

I hope you read this, but you may not since I’m just now watching this video. I have the same book Birds of a Feather and I love your choice of colors and fabrics. I’ve been wanting to make it but didn’t know what fabrics to use. I really didn’t like the ones in the book.

    • @logcabinstitcher7274
      @logcabinstitcher7274  3 года назад

Hi there! I keep thinking I need to get this one done since I have already put so much work into it. I do love scrappy, so I’ve taken a real big mix of fabric styles to put this together so far. It was at the beginning of my quilting when I tried different styles of fabrics. I overthought it by trying to make each bird be a true representation of a real bird. It made it too complicated, so if I just go back to choosing from my fabrics to find simply a color that pleases me, I think it will be best. Do you do Pinterest? There are many different fabric variations, but most of the, aren’t what I would choose. The other thing I would suggest is simply finding images of quilts you are attracted to and find the common factor. Is it the color? Is it the detail of the design in the fabric? Then go through your fabrics and see how you can make it to please you. Hope that helps!

Bonnie, What lovely quilts you have made and are working on!! My favorite fabric lines are Kansas Troubles, Jan Patek’s fabrics, Civil War Reproductions, Kim Diehl (?), Jo Morton and falling in love with Lori Holt’s fabrics. I also like 30 reproductions. I love hand appliqué and also use the freezer paper method but have tried other methods but it has to be done by hand. I also like to EPP.
I enjoyed your video and will be watching for more. I also cross stitch and have watched your Flosstube videos. Thanks for sharing both cross stitch and quilting. Looking forward to your next ones.💜

Yes, it sure does. I think Jan's style has influenced my applique work. I have many of her patterns and love her informal and scrappy style.

Love this channel too! Your appliqué is beautiful. Maybe you could do a tutorial on your freezer paper method. Your style and color is exactly mine too. Thanks for sharing

Great idea! I did a little class at my quilt guild, so I'll have to get out my notes and see how to video it. I've had someone else asking as well. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for doing this show, it was very interesting and I really appreciated you showing what’s inside some of the various traditional style quilt books, Jo Morton, etc. - it is so hard to know what is a good book to buy especially since all our quilt shops are closed here in Melbourne with COVID lockdown. You have inspired me to do a quilt such as Birds of a Feather!

Glad you enjoyed it! And that is a good reminder that sharing what's inside of a pattern book is a good idea, specially now. So many lovely small stores are not able to open and all the lovely merchandise is not on display. I'll be sharing a few new quilt pattern purchases coming up soon!

Can you tell me the name of the BBD quilt book for your amazing appliquéd quilt blocks. I’m a stitcher, a knitter and a newbie quilter. I share your aesthetic and colour choices. I’d love to know a bit more about your long stitch. I love Kim Diehl fabrics but am really interested In Your civil war fabrics. I live in 🇨🇦 and will look into where I can get them here locally.

OH, yes. The Blackbird Designs book is called Birds of a Feather. Goodness. just looked on Amazon and it's $61. Their applique patterns are all pretty similar. I would try to find one that's affordable and see what you can do with them. Each one they do is amazing. I'm glad you love the fabrics and designers that I do as well. I love the rich colors and designs. It's getting harder to find a brick and mortar store now, but I also like shopping online. I usually search quiltshops.com and see what is on sale. Fat Quarter Shop and Missouri Star Quilts have a great selection of the current fabrics, but I can also find older lines on sale (hit and miss) through quiltshops.com. NOw I know, when a favorite designer comes out with a new line, I GRAB IT!!

Loved every minute of your videos, I feel I have met a kindred spirit. I’ve been quilting for 10 years, and am also a civil war reproduction fan. Cross stitching is new to me, only 4 months in and wondering where it has been, it’s become a huge part of my life. You are so right, the community is supportive and fun. Maybe our paths will cross, I’m in Tarzana in the San Fernando Valley, as well as a empty nester. Will you look for me on Instagram, amyjepson. PS, I needed some tissues too❤️

Amy Jepson I’m so glad you found my videos! We do have lots in common and Tarzana isn’t that far away. Wouldn’t it be cool to arrange a stitchers Meetup sometime when life gets back to normal? Would love to spend time with Kindred Spirits! I bet you’re a fan of Anne of Green Gables as well. Oh, those tears that come!
