Back in the 80's, I've owned many 'analog' synths that nowadays would give some people a hard on. Sold them all for a lot of money. M12, Chroma, P5, VS, Mini, OB8, and many more. What Behringer and other manufacturers do, is to catch (mainly) young people making them (mis)believe that these analog synths are kinda magical. That they sound 'better', warmer or whatever(which is not) It's a hype. (i.e. TR909 or TB303 that go ridiculous prices) Blind tests at university level have proven that people simply can not hear the difference. And to be honest Steven, you are the best example that proves that it's not about the kitchen, but all about the cook. I have no analog synths left, and I don't regret. My latest purchase is a Novation Summit. IMHO, (and many others ) It's been since the release of the Virus (ABCTI) that a synth has been made with such a sweet, wide, deep, dark, shiny, crispy, naughty, aggressive palette, that every 'serious' synth-lover should own one...check it out. And yes, I've tried the DM. And sold it after 5 days and bought a Peak. Followed by the Summit.

Joe Sayle I have two CS-80s. Invested a ton and just recently had to buy a fully pristine CS-60 to dismantle for parts to keep them going. They are amazing. No kidding, there is nothing like them. Most owners I know have more than one as they are afraid to be stuck with a non working one. If Behringer somehow manages to keep the absolutely true magic that happens whilst playing this synth, I’d gladly endure the depreciation of these beasts. They pull the power of nine traditional flagship synths out of the socket. A lot of that magic happens when all those electrons are sifting through the machine. We’ll see.
      Happy new year!

    • @saladdays180s9
      @saladdays180s9 4 года назад

Joe Sayle Any attempt to work an analog (or even digital, hybrid etc ) attempt to recreate the CS-80, should be considered valiant. They shot for the moon, but like most, have to compromise areas as the workings inside an actual CS-80 are inefficient (but beautiful to me), this cacophony of wires and electronics takes about 30 actual minutes to heat up. When it does, something happens to the sound as well. The squelchy cutting tone turns into magic, as the poly aftertouch extracts the nuances of what’s going on inside. If Behringer falls short of exactness, maybe they’ll come across their own magic sound. In that event, that is my hope. Most people who get to play one usually just try to do Bladerunner etc, as it is intimidating to create something new without trying to showcase the poly AT and their own musicianship, showing that they are deserving of playing one. The truth is, and I mean this to all that would get one if Behringer succeeds, you do not have to be a virtuoso. Even we’ll thought out simple playing is rewarded in a way that is never showcased.
I put a phone recording of a five measure song core I looped with the CS-80, and a hint of Memorymoog on Instagram a few days ago trying to illustrate this. I am TheSynthesizerGrouch.

Just missed one thing...the all important back of the synth. I/O !
gotta have stereo audio input, so we can use the amazing multi-FX section with external audio sources. If they really wanted to go all out and one-up the competition, it could have USB audio with the option to send the external processed audio signal back out on it’s own channel, separate from the internal synth. (either via USB or one of two pairs of L/R analog outs) They could also develop something like Elektron’s overbridge, so we can use the synth as a VST.
From what I understand, these modern VCO’s are usually auto tuned by a DSP chip at certain intervals (not constantly like a DCO) .give the user an option to disable that auto-tuning, providing the user a button or menu option to tune OSCs when needed.

Perhaps the best feature of DeepMind for me is the adjustable slope for each stage of the envelopes. Just that feature alone makes it possible to change sounds more effectively than many more powerful synths. The difference between a straight line, a concave curve, and a concave curve is immense--unfortunately Behringer haven't made them very intuitive to quickly edit from the front panel, but by adjusting the values in the envelope menu you can emulate just about any envelope style from other synths. Keeping that functionality (and improving it with a knob for each segment to directly adjust the curve separately and simultaneously with the time parameter) is something I want to see on every Behringer synth--and ones from other manufacturers, too. I would go even further to add slope curves to the filters as well--12dB and 24dB are all good, but changing the slope/curve on either side of a center point suddenly would give you tremendous sound shaping potential--for instance, a lowpass filter with a very gradual curve joined with just a custom high pass trim to take out lows below 50Hz to allow more room for the bass, all in one filter.

About time someone made a wishlist/ dreamsynth video! thank you sir!
I would like to posit 2 features of my own:
1- jogwheel for data entry (it's so smooth to move quickly or slow down for fine movements)
2- who was it that used that "traveler"-style control whereby a slider controls a value amount as always, but there are "side sliders" above and below the main slider which limit both the physical travel of the main slider as well as the floor and ceiling of the control value itself? So not just the amplitude of a control signal can be adjusted, but both the positive and negative peaks- independently!

I played all the new clones like Prophet X, Brute,Quantum, Grandmother etc. and I came to the conclusion that everyone sounded more or less very similar. With eyes closed, it made no difference if I played a Moog or Waldorf clone, respectively I couldn`t really say what synth I actually played.
In the 80s I also played the originals and each thing had its own sound character and charme. You could really tell the difference.
This individualism is somehow almost completely absent today.
Of course, today it's actually impossible to create a completely different sounding synth.
So it is about implementing techniques in a device that lets you experience the old familiar practically new.
So I wished that different synthesis interfaces and generators would be implemented in one device so that you can switch and combine between them.
You wanted your synth sounding like a Wavestation and have that kind of vector sequences ? Just push the button.
You wanted your synth sounding like a Moog, Synclavier, Fairlight, CS80,Wave PPG ? Just push the button...and combine it all together.
(The Hybrid`s goes a little in that direction...but without having that sound of old vintage charme).
For me, there`s no need for another clone of a CS80, Jupiter 8 etc. if they all sound very similar anyway.
I just wanted a synth which includes different programmable synths in one device (not a simple sampler...but including a sampler, too).
And if Behringer does it, please use a well playable keyboard ;-)

a lot of cool stuff here. I like the staggered knobs for each osc.
One thing I would love would be a synth that makes use of the montage/Kronos touch screen but would have 2 dedicated screens for the envelopes. Always on for visual feedback and you can use the knobs to program or just click the points and drag. A luxury sure but would be awesome to work with.
I'd also love a knob that adjusts the envelope curve like the one in sonic academy's ANA2 soft synth so you can really fine tune those plucks, stabs or basslines. And since most envelopes are digital anyhow I don't see how this would be too difficult to implement (even the prophet 6 has digital envelopes.)

my main gripe with most poly-synths with patch memory is that the panel doesn't (and can't) update when one changes patches. I'm convinced endless encoders (rotary) with light rings indicating position is where it's at. I often dream of someone implementing the so called "saturn ring" knobs from NI's Massive with 2 or more color coded lit rings per knob (the preposterously expensive waldorf quantum is the closest thing i can think of that does this).

    1) Motorized controls (faders, knobs, on/off buttons, and yes.. even the switches!) combined with storing/recalling presets which can be loaded/dumped through USB etc. (all the modern-day possibilities). This would be especially useful, maybe even necessary, when there are that many dedicated controls on a synth!.. It would also be pretty nice to use the synth as a plugin (plugout?) in your DAW like Elektron’s Overbridge or Roland Aira (not sure)
    2) Different modes for the curves of the envelopes (linear, exponential, inversed exponential, etc.)
    3) Also for envelopes: attack time ‘scale’ very fast/normal, ideal for percussion combined with the previous idea.
I could go on for a while, it’s fun to brainstorm on this.. :D I’m a software developer and I made a simple softsynth a while back, I feel like picking that up again now.. 🤓

Am I weird because I'd prefer the octave select switches to be rotary knobs with click-stops, and the ABDSSR knobs to be sliders on our dream machine? Also maybe the octave switches should be higher, on the main panel rather than the side panel, though that seems to make sense? That octave switch location is one thing the Prophet X has over the DM imho. I keep going to the HOLD and ARP buttons on the DM when I want to switch octaves. You can be holding a note and reach them on the PX. Maybe it was necessitated by the missing octave of keys, but old habits die hard I guess...

Hi, here's Marc again. I am actually missing quite a few things. LFO waveshape selection. LFO destination routing. Mod destinations (for instance pitch, filter, volume). Osc waveshape mixing (With the layout you propose you would for instance not be able to mix the 1st waveshape of an oscillator with the 3rd). Sync, noise and ring mod only in single hardwired routings? More envelope destinations (for instance pitch). And why not put a loop option into the envelopes? Furthermore the ribbon needs to be as long as the keybaord so one can play complete melodies on it. By the way: Have you already taken a look at the Hydrasynth?

    • @StephenLearson

Marc Brassé LFO wave selection buttons are on the far left as I mentioned in the video. I didn’t go into all the routing destinations since the whole synth is based on the DeepMind interface.

Loose the keypad and increase the display to that whole block making it touch sensitive for further deeper control with a Kaossilator style control option. Add all the usual compliments on the back including a patch bay area. As an option an angled up eurorack can be attached to the back to hold all sorts of nifty little modulars. And to top it all off, Behringer needs to come up with there own version of a Roli style key bed..For a hardware synth!!

Almost the perfect synth....my assumption would be on the output in back, full midi, USB to host, USB data storage, VGA or touchscreen video out... so you don't have to have additional apps. And effects module somewhere, maybe buttons next to the filter buttons. Or just buttonize the like DM. No FM or Wave memory is ok on a classic analog.

It is MAC friendly and not so much with PC connectivity wise .

About the only suggestion I would add to that would be to look at implementing the Stephen Kay's KARMA algorithm into it somehow because it is (IMO) of the niftiest pieces of accompaniment logic to come out (it is NOT an arpeggiator) and would take this to the next level. Thanks for sharing!

Great idea! My dream synth would have poly after touch and a nice hammer action keyboard. I prefer hammer action most, and if I want semi weighed keys, I can just use my midi board to control the synth. I’m really hoping that they offer a hammer action version as well as a semi weighted action on the cs80, as it won’t feel as good without it I’m afraid, and there will definitely be people willing to pay the bigger price for hammer action.

    • @padmad3k63
      @padmad3k63 4 года назад +1

@Murada A juno 60 doesn't have midi you need to install a mod for that. For me it's no biggie I can solder and fix electronics but others can't. There is a price difference between the Juno 60 and 106. Those 60's go for nearly 2500 while the 106 go for nearly 1500-2000. Their price has increased. But even soundwise there is a huge difference between a Juno 60 and a Juno 106.
The Deepmind 12 is a Juno 106 on steroids but IMHO they should have included a 5 octave keybed with 12 parts multitimbrality, split and layer options.
Behringer will make DSI look like a little kid in a wheelchair when they release the OBXa clone. They're also cloning a Prophet 5.
Roland didn't want to reissue the JP8, Juno 60 etc. They said they don't chase analog ghosts while Behringer said they do chase analog ghosts. They're doing a great job.

I have a juno 106 and a deepmind. I was considering a deepmind first but decided the real thing was better and got the 106. Then after some time I bought the deepmind 12 as the juno was limited. Don't get me wrong, the juno sounds incredible and cannot be matched by the deepmind 12, but the juno simply cannot do what the deepmind can, so they compliment each other really really well. So in my opinion, both works best. They're very different. Also have a model d and that is great too. Behringer make awesome synths.

    • @cseagrist
      @cseagrist 4 года назад +2

@Murada wtf are you smoking? Even 106s are like $1500 now. You can get a DM12 for $500 or less used. Also, it can do sooooo much more than a 106. And on top of that, you aren't even factoring in the maintenance issue... synths that are 40 years old have issues. The Junos especially do as the voice chips fail. Forget all the hassle. Yeah, live it won't sound the same. In a mix, I would be shocked if you can pick out a real Juno from a DM12 set to emulate one. Or you could pick up a System 8 and have a Juno, Jupiter, and JX3P... which would also sound great in a mix. Vintage is overrated. I"ll take modern features and no maintenance costs.

    • @padmad3k63

@@MajorOSC It's based on a Juno 106 but it isn't a Juno clone. I hope they'll do a proper Juno 60 clone, with 61 keys, Poly at, 12 voices, multitimbrality + layering. The clones should be as close to the originals, the DP12 is a great synth but the menu diving sucks. If they'll do a JP8 clone it should stay as close as it can to the original. No display, no menu diving etc. What I dislike about the DP12 is the 4 octave keyboard, it should have a 5 octave keyboard. Playing basslines on a 4 octave keybed is annoying. 3-4 octaves are fine for mono synths but not for poly synths.

I'm not a fan of sliders that will eventually develop scratchy noise issues and difficult gummy sliding despite being covered during non-use. Behringer has had serious issues with faulty mixer's sliders which have affected me directly resulting in replacement. Filter sweeps are annoying with sliders too and one of the things I dislike most about my DM12. I'd prefer to see Behringer copy the Moog or Prophet line of synths. I just think that knobs are more convenient, takes up less surface real estate and are more aesthetically pleasing than sliders. A few sliders are okay though. But each to their own...

That would be one awesome synth that you have designed there but what about some PCM sounds, like thousands of them, to mix with the analogue waves and also an effects panel. I think decent effects are important for today’s sounds. Even the Roland Gaia from back in the day has got one of these. Also a lot of people are into looping and the Casio XWP1 had a phrase builder, step sequence and arpeggiator and the G1 had a external/internal recording looper. Of course very important to get the tuning mechanism right unlike Korg in their latest and greatest.

I Really like your thinking on the design. There are a couple (more than 2 actually) of things I would do differently: Osc Pitch and Osc octave need to be in the same panel or combined so that pitch includes octave, thereby saving panel space..in my humble opinion. BTW this also eliminates the need for a detune slider unless that's for that old school out of tune affect that oscilators did when they drifted out of tune back then. Also, I think this next thing was just an oversight, you forgot to label the Amplitude envelope. probably missed because of proximity....no points off for that. Allow digital control by the sliders so that the display shows the numeric values changes as the adjustments are made.....of course this will require someone to write the code for that...this doesn't affect your panel layout though. Next, you could make a 16 voice version and a 32 voice version (with a circuit board add on option). On the 32 voice version you could slide the LFO buttons down slightly allowing room for a mode button which will be labeled Poly (all 32) or 16 +16 dual. This gives you layering...similar to the Nords and the Novation Summit. And Finally, Dude you gotta have digital effects. I'm sure you want to keep the signal as analog as possible, but that's easily done by allowing a blend knob in the effects. You would have to put that in the edit menus for the effects, which would show up in the display as needed. This way you can blend in some of the dry synth signal with the effected return. You could create preset algorithms for Delay(and other modulation effects), Aux/Multi for overdrive, distortion, ring mod...etc and finally Reverb. I'm not trying to step on your Dream synth, I love your imagination......just want to help give you a bigger dream. Disclaimer: no attempt is made to claim royalties for the use of any of these Ideas...LOL. I love this kinda stuff. I'm subscribing b/c you think like me.

I had an idea today for a synth I would love to see: an FPGA synth with programmable digital synthesizer cores. I got this idea from the vintage gaming community's MiSTer project. It uses a very cheap (~$130) Cyclone V-powered De-10 Nano FPGA board and currently emulates everything from the PDP-1 (no kidding, this piece of hardware can play THE ORIGINAL VIDEO GAME Space War, how cool is that?) to most recently the Neo Geo and Sega CD with almost everything in between. It's even got a super awesome Amiga core that can act as a tricked out Amiga and run all the software ever made for it. Commodore 64 is present and accounted for as well, and Atari ST work is ongoing.
The company Analogue makes some commercial products like the Super Nt (SNES) and Mega SG (Genesis), which look similar to the original hardware (but smaller and sleeker, with modern amenities like USB power, SD card slot, HDMI, and a multitude of options for modern displays) and have physical controller ports and cartridge slots to run original games (the Mega SG even has the ability to plug into a real Sega CD just like the original Genesis!). But the MiSTer project is entirely open source, meaning once you put the hardware together, you are free to load up any of the hardware cores that the community has created and use them to run images of the original software.
So the idea is to create a synth platform around an FPGA. You'd simply buy the hardware and then load whatever cores into it you want to recreate the actual hardware of the original synth (I'm staring at my ESQ-1 right now). It could also utilize extra storage for PCM samples or something like that. Everything from digital oscillators to ROMplers to VA synths could be supported. The De-10 Nano board is probably powerful enough to cover VA synths well into the 2000's if not even beyond that. Synthesizers could be released as software packages that load hardware cores into the FPGA and software samples and algorithms into the build-in storage.
A community-driven project is likely the best way to implement this, and given how many talented people there are out there I'd be surprised if some of them hadn't thought of this already. I think the hard part would be coming up with the algorithms for stuff like VA synths, any kind of deep software programming within the original hardware is likely proprietary and hard to come by. But in terms of replicating digital circuitry, it should be relatively easy given what we've seen the community already accomplish with MiSTer. The best part about the MiSTer project is that it's constantly improving and expanding. New features are being added all the time and bugs are fixed quickly. I'd love to see some kind of digital synth project like this. And if a synth manufacturer decided to release a commercial version, I'd probably pick that up, too! You can sell me the cores individually!
