- What Are the 9 Best Pastel Art Books?
(FYI...this is normally a video for my Patrons that I am opening up for everyone on Monet Cafe' RUclips Channel)
Let's face it.... art books can get expensive! Wouldn't it be great if someone could give you some insight into what books are best for the Pastel Artist?.... especially for Beginners?
Well, help is one the way with this informative video featuring some of the best pastel books on the market. These may not be everyone's "9 Best" but these have been some of my favorites.
1. The Pastel Artist's Handbook / Barrons
2. The Encyclopedia of Pastel Techniques
3. The Pastel Workbook / by Jackie Simmonds
4. The Pastel Book / Bill Creevy
5. Pastel Painting Techniques / Guy Roddon
6. Capturing Light and Color with Pastel / Doug Dawson
7. Pastel Interpretations / Madlyn-ann C. Woolwich
8. Pastel Pointers / Richard McKinley
9. Pure Pastel / Ann Hevener
This video is normally part of my Patreon scheduled Wednesday videos called, "Storytime" in which I read from different pastel books to help my patrons learn and perhaps acquire specific books for themselves. I wanted to make this video "public" for the rest of my Monet Cafe' Art Family.
I hope this helps and please comment and let me know if you have any favorite books. Happy Painting and Reading!

I've gotten most of my art books via resale shops, garage sales, donated to me by other artists and bought a few. I was fortunate to find the Pastel Painting Techniques and now I need to pull it out and use it. I collected it before starting my adventure into pastels. Been painting now for a few months. I love your channel and am learning lots.
That is awesome! Way to go Paula!
Loved this information on all these books. Thank you.
Found out that Mitchell Albala is publishing a new Landscape Workbook, the one with a simplified sea landscape on the Cover. It's on preorder now for those intrested and available in November with new Excercises, Topics, and Lessons. Thx for letting me know about the original one. The Pastel Interpretation has a bit on metarials in the very end of it, the neat thing about it the author who is in represented in it herself here and there must have asked all the artists in the book to collaborate as they draw the same scene often which I find very nice as you see the same subject being approached differrently in each artists style. Thought I add that info as I love the book myself.
Hi Susan 😀
I literally wanted to get a book on pastels but my bad luck struck me
U see in india, no one's shipping interstate or internationally coz of covid nd moreover floods in some regions have hampered the service provision
I think I might get one after the pandemic
Keep posting more 😊
Stay safe and inside 😊
Love from India ❤️
Thank you so much. Truly generous of you to give all this information. God bless.
So nice of you😀
Impressive books. I can feel how you love other artist's work. I love royo, too since I was a teenager. I suggest to you joan raset works too
Beautiful 🌹👏
Many thanks☺
You might want to get 'The Art of the Pastel' by Philippe Saunier and Thea Burns. It's a humongous tome which traces the history of the medium and has amazing quality reproductions.
lalagonegaga Nice!!! Thank you!
@@monetcafe And thank you for recommending 'Pure Pastel'. I'll definitely be ordering it soon. ❤️
Thank you so much for the awesome information!
THANK YOU!!!
You're welcome!😀
They seem all amazing books. As a beginner not sure which one to choose
If you can find "The Pastel Workbook" by Jackie Simmonds then I think that would be a great book for you. It's been in short supply, but sometimes you can find it on Amazon.... even in the used book section. :)
Thank you Susan. This was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Does anyone know the name of the book by Royo? It was one of the last books that Susan showed
I’m brand new to pastels and just came across this post - what is that black board on your easel?
It's most likely a piece of black foam core board or one I made myself using Gatorboard with some black chalkboard adhesive applied to the surface. I make my own boards this way so I can reuse them and erase off any pastel that may get on them from painting. I have a video on how I make them. Just search for DIY Pastel Painting Board.
Thx susan, always appreciate your wonderful vids. What is the title pls of the royo book? His art is such an inspiration! Ty!!!!
wonderful, Shirlee. The book title is simply "Armonia Royo". Hope you can find it.
Any book suitable for beginners using soft pastel colors??
Yes… it sometimes hard to find now but it’s a book called “the pastel workbook“ by Jackie Simmonds. It has some really great follow along lessons.
The piece called, "Moonshine Valley" do you show putting this together; or is this coming up..?
I loved this piece at first glance.
As you know I was born and raised in the Appalachians. Subject to all the honorable behaviors. The place where I grew up was called, "Moonshine Valley" by reputation only. Thankfully my mother was a women of light color, so we were not invited to all the reindeer games lol.
I really love this piece Susan.
I'm in a lot of pain today so I'm not to chatty. My daughter said "thank God." Lol
Keep spinning :)
Oh dear friend.... I am so sorry to hear you are in pain today. May the Lord pour out his healing and peace to you.
That is so interesting that I named the painting the same as an area where you grew up!!! I literally just named it "Moonshine Valley" because of the moon shining into the valley crevice in the image. I actually had an uncle name Dole who made moonshine in the western NC Appalachian mountains. We heard some very interesting stories about him. I can't remember what area of the mountains you came from, but my entire family is from an area near Sylva, NC. We all still call that area home.
Oh, and I did record the process of the painting and will be sharing it soon! Praying for you brother.
@@monetcafe Thank you Sister.
W.Va., where everyone is family hahaha I'm feeling much better already.
@@JLPrice-kc2uy So glad you are feeling better!!!! I sure do miss the mountains. That whole Appalachian range is so beautiful.
Oh, and I can't find your email to send you my poem. Maybe you could email me so I can respond.
@@monetcafe on its way
Mam can you share a pdf file of your book like Shadows and figures in pastel
Awesome so impressive ♥️

Thriftbooks or abebooks is best when money is tight.
