How to do a Pump Down on an Air Conditioner ( HVAC )

  • How to do a pump down on an air conditioner ( HVAC ). In this video I explain what a pump down is and how it works, along with pumping down an AC unit using the steps I explained. This should only be done by HVAC technicians and microchannel condenser coils should never be put into a pump down because that can cause them to leak. Manufacturers of r410A ac condenser units also don't recommend putting those air conditioner systems into a pump down either since that refrigerant has higher pressures and a pump down can lead to leaks.

Hi Jay. Did you move yet. Hey I had a problem with my furnace. Everything pointed to the pressure valve for the inducer pump but when I tested it as you suggested, it tested ok. I checked all lines and they were clear. Long story short, I believe my problem was debris in the gas valve pressure sensor. It piggybacks on the gas line similiar to a water pressure sensor on a hot tub. I removed it and then purged the gas line and blew into the stem that screwed into the T of the gas line. Do you or can u do a video on how to test it. I think you can just jumper it but hoped to get the info from you. Thanks. all your videos have helped me troubleshoot and locate that I think Ive fixed the problem. It was intermittent which didnt help. since I remived and purged it the durnace hs not failed to start. thanks again

My old AC system is flat and it has leak(small or big hole don't know, and water got in the pipe perhaps) in AC line under slab we believe base on last AC guy detection. I like to use seal repair spray like leak freeze on my old system to see if I can make it last a little longer. What are correct steps involved in refilling it up with 407c(cheaper than r22) - vacuum (take out water and moisture), refill with freon, and then apply sealing chemical ? Many AC guys charge a lot like 500-600 to attempt to seal which is too much for me.

After pump down with compressor, what is the process for recovering the remaining refrigerant? Attach yellow line from gauges to recovery machine, line from recovery machine to a recovery tank, then open necessary valves leading to the tank?
When someone pushes in a contactor to do this, is that because the low or high limit switch is still active? The workaround is bypass the limits and run the unit from stat/outdoor switch?

ive never heard of anyone having issues pumping down 410 units, the condensers come from factory with a full charge so im sure they will be fine provided the system didnt have a ton of extra refrigerant added. watch your gauges and go at your own discretion i suppose

I picked up an old R22 unit that was advertised as having about 4 lbs of Freon in it. The guy said the person pumped the system down into the outside condenser unit. The liquid and suction lines were cut and then pinched off, and the service valves were both closed. When I open the liquid side service valve, I can see it is under pressure. But when I open the suction side service valve and hook up a gauge, it reads zero. I even pulled the shrader out to make sure it was not blocked. Is this normal? I would think the pressures on high and low side would be equal? I wanted to pull the freon out to donate the unit to an HVAC school, but I'm confused as to what's going on. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    • @neutrodyne

The reason he only connects the low side is because he is not charging, or checking the charge he is only doing a pump down. He is only concerned about getting the gas out of the line and into the compressor.

The problem with pumping it down to zero is if you get it to -1 or more you will then have a vacuum in the line which will draw air into the sytem when a line is opened and you do not want that.

It’s faster to use a pump down method because the compressor in the AC unit in much stronger so it’ll be a much faster process to pump most of it using that compressor.

    Hey Jay,
Does it matter which place you go to get certifications?
    Already have universal.
Wanna get other certificates -for example R-410A
Go through ESCO Group or Mainstream or does it matter ??
Thanks for your info and videos! 🤙🏻

Thank you Daniel! I have entertained the idea before but decided against it for now. I know quite a few HVAC business owners/ex-owners and have learned about owning your own business from them.. I would effectively be resigning myself to 7 day work weeks and a lot of headaches for the first couple years. At present, I am not willing to do that.

@@WordofAdviceTV your causing me to rethink twice 😂 It Would be nice ofcourse to be able to hire a dispatcher/someone with accountant skills of the bat. Who can take and schedule calls/ send invoices/ billing/ re stocking / ordering. so we don't have 3 jobs and our tasks/stress becomes reduced. Marriage partner? Although I've heard it's not a good idea! 😇

@Daniel L Haha yep.. All the things you listed and many more are the cause of those headaches.. HVAC business is always a good business if one puts enough effort into it but since I have an idea of how much effort it really is, I am not as enthused about jumping in.. But some people love that, they enjoy being immersed in work. I have a 32 year old friend who opened his own remodeling business and it is successful. His hair is turning grey. Lol, I just don't think having my own business is worth a few years of my lifespan. I would rather focus on other opportunities. But like a grandma used to say to me: "different strokes for different folks". ;)

      @@WordofAdviceTV damn! Stop it! 😱
I already invested 10k with van, tools, website. Logo/stickers/books/invoices/magnets/apps/ registered my business/ got my ccb test/ etc. I have the mentality that if its possible for others its possible for me. Most people don't use a flat rate pricing method. They don't have a equipment book. They don't know the difference between overhead as a percentage so they calculate gross profit as 100% profit and don't charge enough. They don't know their divisor percentage, they don't know what net profit is and if they do, they better know the percentage where it needs to be at every job, every month. They better get their profit and loss statements monthly. This is the reason why 85% business fail in 5 years. Hvac millionaire is great on the business side of hvac. You are absolutely right jay, I've known a guy who owned a business for 15 years. I worked for him. He left to Mexico for 3 months and left me to take over lol. There was no pricebook! No equipment book! The van wasn't stocked I had to make a 1.5 hr trip there and back for copper fittings and other $4 parts! Ofvourse when he got back he said it took you this long to do a particular task! And he didn't pay me a total of $1,200. Thats what he is missing out on and more. I cant believe how he remains in business. I had to do all his call backs of which the customer didn't want to pay the second time around and guess what he didn't want to pay me. I guess I had to do his call backs for free ! I think if this man survived like this for so long, I can as well. And with the right principles/knowledge make it alot easier for myself. Although customer service is going to require humility! That's for sure!

I love the plan Daniel!! You are not just jumping in blindly. I very much agree with the idea of being educated in business, sales, marketing, cataloging, advertising, and other spheres aside from just HVAC knowledge. That will give you a tremendous advantage over companies like the one you worked for... Just from what you described, I am confident you will do great for yourself as long as you persist. If you are invested into this already and there are no colossal reasons to change course, I would continue to give 100% effort into this venture and it will surely succeed. I also know a few guys that opened their own HVAC companies and they LOVE it! But they definitely did their homework in how to successfully run a business before going off on their own. Being brilliant in HVAC of course does not mean one is brilliant in business. Anyway, good luck man!!! Keep improving and adjusting to the times and you will be an HVAC legend! ;)

Yes, you are right. I said it wrong there. The discharge line is the one that comes out of the compressor and into the condenser coil. The liquid line comes after the condenser coil. My apologies for the mistake.

  • @Froggability
    @Froggability 3 года назад +1

When the disconnect is tricky recommend pushing the contactor in manually to get your timing nice, and it is possible to pulse it when it's just above zero.
Or even stop at zero it will "bounce" up a few pounds.
Recovery machine on the last 5 psi?? That's not enough to even prime the recovery pump, I think it's "loss minimus"
