    RIP John Romita! His first year and a half on Spider-man is my favorite run ever. I started reading Spider-man with #102 just when Marvel Tales was reprinting Romita's initial run and back issues only cost 15 cents so a 12-year-old could quickly amass a collection. It was so thrilling for me as a young teen and hopeless romantic. The only downside was that Romita made me fall head over heels in love with Gwen just in time for ASM #121. What an intense and wild two years (Sept.1971-March 1973)!

      That was slightly unfortunate timing for you with Gwen! But no doubt Romita's character designs for Gwen, MJ and of course Spidey himself are absolutely iconic and are to me still always the versions that immediately come to my mind when I think of any of those characters

    I don't read a lot of superhero comic now, but Ultimate Spider-man hooked me instantly. Characters are so humane and not as bombastic and over the top as usual in superhero comics

      Bendis really wrote an excellent character-driven story throughout that whole series

    I recently re-read Spider-man 1-18 in the big Taschen volume, and aside from the wonderful reproductions, I was struck by how quickly the stories and characters evolved and grew together in the first year. By issue 8 the cast is fully developed and the reader is completely engaged and with issues 11-12 you have your first 'classic' Spider-man story of import with the return of Doc Ock and the death of Betty's brother. By these standards the FF lagged far behind despite its head start. Great stuff.

      I totally agree, Amazing Spider-Man got off to a great start very quickly! I'd say Fantastic Four didn't start to get really good until somewhere between issues 30-40

    Those early Spider-Man runs were just so excellent. Nobody draws Spidey quite like Steve Ditko and John Romita has such a great classic style- vibrant and dynamic. Those first two omnibuses are peak Silver Age comics
    Excellent video

    The five are Amazing Spider-Man omnibus vol#1, Amazing Spider-Man omnibus vol#2, Roger Stern Spiderman omnibus vol 1 and Todd Mcfarlane spiderman omnibus vol 1 and Ultimate Spiderman vol 1.

    I love the amazing spider-man omnibus vol 1. I read it so much and had it so long that's it no longer in the best condition but man is it straight🔥🔥🔥

    Fantastic omnibuses all! Happy to see Ultimate Spidey on the list 🕷️
    I got the Nick Spencer Omni recently hoping to get deeper into that one. It’s easily the most
    Modern Spidey I’ve read
    Great video man!

      Ultimate Spider-Man was always gonna make it onto the list, it's way, way, way too good not to!
      I'm really bad at keeping up with any of the modern stuff though, because every time I read anything from the last few years I get kinda annoyed that we're still dealing with aftermath of One More Day and Marvel's determination to maintain a status quo and never let Peter develop and mature more as a character

      @@TheComicBookTrove yeah I see what you’re saying. I haven’t gone overly modern myself but I do just want to see what’s out here ha.
      Hoping to finally check out superior Spider-Man later this year

    Great list! I may have to dip into the Spidey well and check out the start of the run. My only issue is the writing of the Silver age. It tends to be a bit much with the detail, over analyzing everything to the reader. I understand that was the era. The Bronze Age is where I really started to enjoy the series. Looking forward to your other lists. Thanks for sharing

      I haven't read it all, I've read the first few issues digitally but I don't have the omnibus. I'll have to read the rest at some point

    So happy to see ultimate spider man here. It is my first ever omnibus and I am blown away by the quality of it. Only problem is that it is very, very hard to follow up on. What on Earth am I supposed to read to match the quality of this series?! It has everything I could want from a comic.

    • @TheComicBookTrove
      @TheComicBookTrove  Год назад +1

      It's absolutely top quality throughout the whole run! There really aren't many runs I've enjoyed as much as that one. A few others I'd highly recommend would be Peter David's Hulk, Chris Claremont's X-Men, Geoff Johns' Green Lantern and Aquaman, Immortal Hulk and Jason Aaron's Thor

      @@TheComicBookTrove I’m just watching your bendis guardians video. Shame it doesn’t hit these heights. It feels like all the elements are there for a superb story and USM is just so unbelievably fantastic. I honestly didn’t know comics could hit those heights.
      Thanks for the recommendations. That Thor book is super high up my priority list. Holy crap does the art look phenomenal! Xmen: I have been researching it a lot over the last few days. I was thinking of starting with “new x-men” by Morrison.
      DC? Eh. I always wanted to love DC. Bought tons of dc comics a few years ago and nothing ever clicked. It’s like the world and characters are so superb… but I was looking for that bendis level characterisation where they feel so bloody real and relatable and where I really care about them. Nothing I have read from DC has even come close yet. I think I will stick with marvel for now. bendis makes Peter Parker just as interesting as Spiderman and even the Batman comics make Bruce Wayne seem so bloody boring in comparison. But hey that’s just me. Im only on volume 2 of the ultimate omnibus… but I was thinking of going over to amazing spider man and maybe starting around brand new day and then reading literally everything up to current.

    • @TheComicBookTrove
      @TheComicBookTrove  Год назад

      Yeah the Guardians run isn't on the same level but Bendis' runs Alias and Daredevil are both great. In terms of Spider-Man, Ultimate is my favourite modern era take, and besides that I actually prefer the classic Amazing Spider-Man from the very beginning by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko/John Romita, and also Roger Stern's run. David Micheline also had a good run working with Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen and Mark Bagley

    Curious to ask...is it weird to buy several Spiderman vol 1 omnis? One to read and others sealed such as the Alex Ross cover? Maybe its just me being crazyy

      Thanks! I think Superior Spider-Man is a good run, but I didn't like it as much as any of the books in this list, I mostly prefer the classic stuff to more modern stuff

    I've never been all that into Spider-Man myself, but he seems to be one of my 5 year old son's favorites. He seems to really enjoy Spidey and His Amazing Friends, too. As such, I'm about to purchase copies of Volumes 1 & 2, Ditko and Rometa Sr., for when he's older. And, if there's time for it, I'd appreciate reading through them myself at some point.
