    Correction: I called Tim Curry the "late, great" mistakenly referring to him having passed away. Tim Curry is alive and well.

      It really didn't need to be around that much, like everybody had like 1 moment of fear, heck even the one with the glasses didn't get any altough he does mentions it, but beverly got like 3 or 4 scenes about the rapey dad.

      I personally loved this movie. The one complaint I have besides them cutting the scare scenes short and immediately jumping to a happy scene (killing the flow at times) would be that I was honestly hoping for It to be scarier. It more so felt like a really really well done thriller with a ton of creep to it. Overall I really enjoyed this movie though.

    see what i don't understand is how he read the book and don't know that pennywise is influencing every adult in the town which is why the old lady did nothing when Georgy screamed also if he did read the book then why did he not know what the dead lights were its just confusing how you read a book but forgot the major lore behind pennywise.

    • @aryastark3677
      @aryastark3677 7 лет назад +3

      Well actually Ryan in the book Dave Gardener was the one who heard (and saw) Georgie by the Sewer Drain .Dave was *not* influenced by Pennywise, he actually went over to try and help Georgie, but Georgie had already died from his wound.

    • @LoganFerguson

    • @Gezoes
      @Gezoes 7 лет назад +9

      When I read the book I got the impression they didn´t do anything because either they couldn´t see or hear it, or they could, but were hoping that doing nothing would somehow appease Pennywise, so they wouldn´t fall victim to It themselves.

    • @shoezomaku
      @shoezomaku 7 лет назад +9

      You should probably at least skim the book again, not that your insight is that far off. It's just that the book is slightly more straightforward about it, Pennywise to a degree is able to directly influence the adults, it's kinda like a mass hypnosis. This is the same reason why nobody in the rest of the country notices anything. I don't care how small you think your town is, 100 of children dying every 27 years like clockwork isn't going to go unnoticed.

    • @Heyesy
      @Heyesy 5 лет назад +3

      Yeah, I think they understood. But what I don't get about their criticism is they were saying, "Oh, well, here, they didn't talk about how the balloons float, and how he'll float too, unlike in the original where it made sense when they talked about floating because of them talking about the balloons floating." but in the original, he only ever talks about balloons floating to Georgie, and what happens to Georgie? He freaking dies! So how in the original do the kids know what he means if the only person who heard about the balloons floating is dead? How does this critique make any sense?

    Lol this dude doesn't know that Bill's bike was named Silver before they ever thought of using silver to kill it. Maybe it's named silver because he says "hi ho silver away" like in the lone ranger. Pretty sure in the movie that when Ben is in the library you can hear Bill saying it outside. Whenever this guy read the book, it was a very long time ago. He has forgotten a lot.

    • @EdanaInbetween
      @EdanaInbetween 7 лет назад +27

      Kahoot Gamer Yep. There's a whole two or so pages on Silver being named for The Lone Ranger in the novel. Funnily, most of his complaints about the movie seem to be things the movie took directly from the book he supposedly read.

    • @Dagsschiller
      @Dagsschiller 7 лет назад +7

      I know man! even if he didn't read the book, he can get that from the miniseries, he's not paying attention to the book, it's not a thing you'd forget.

    • @ratelvora8014
      @ratelvora8014 7 лет назад +1

      He also forgot, that whenever It uses a monster as a "mask" to use the kids fears against them he also receives all of the creatures weaknesses, as long as you believe him to have that weakness. Since he used a werewolve form to attack richie and I think Bill in the book, he gets weak to silver.

  • @Jesse22H
    @Jesse22H 7 лет назад +208

    Guy on the left is missing a few key parts about the movie. The parts he DISLIKES are completely valid, and I think that's clouding some memory or understanding about the movie. Especially Georgie screaming, that poor kid was in AGONY when he got his arm sliced off. Go back and watch it, even that clip is on youtube...
    Beverly already conquered her greatest fear by overcoming her sexually abusive father when she smashed him in the head with the toilet tank cover. That's why when she was in IT'S lair, he couldn't kill her - she wasn't afraid anymore. IT even describes that he instills fear into them to "salt his steak" so they taste better. When Beverly looks at the deadlights, it only comatoses her and I guess a kiss is enough to wake her, why not.
    I don't think that's the strongest point about the movie to criticize. Also the CGI was awesome, even the fire dancing scene. It was MEANT to look that way, 100%.

      Why wouldn't It still try to eat them even if they wouldn't taste as good by not being afraid? Obviously, they were becoming a nuisance and the only ones doing something about him so why wouldn't he just put aside his lust for tastiness for these few kids?

    • @mr.fettesq.7705
      @mr.fettesq.7705 6 лет назад +1

      Brandon Smisek because for Pennywise when It feeds it's ALL about the fear. His whole existence revolves around it. It lives for causing fear which in turn feeds him. The fact he is the oldest living being in the known macroverse tells you that there is no reason for him to believe anything could be a threat to him, and that eventually IT will get it's way. No need to rush. If Bev isn't afraid at that moment It will wait and have her float until she is.

Hence the 'frog turning in to a Prince' thing. And by the way...that book was in Bev's room not Ben's. Though that's what you maybe meant.

    • @BlackangelKatakuri

      Nathan Tye That kind of defeats the purpose of pretending to be a clown for the purpose of luring kids in. Clowns are meant to be friendly and funny so when It first meets the group it should act friendly and try to make them laugh then after a while once they become comfortable around It it then changes it's tune and starts trying to scare them senseless.

    • @Azel90w
      @Azel90w 7 лет назад +16

      @lonnie dearing you would be right, IF that was the purpose of IT's disguise as pennywise. He mainly use it's clown mask to scare and haunt the children.

    • @robocup357
      @robocup357 7 лет назад +5

      Lonnie Dearing by sort of off, he means when he tries to charm kids, it succeeds mostly, but still there's something wrong, you know how Georgie hesitates a bit before he took the boat? That's what it is

    • @CanterlotCrusader
      @CanterlotCrusader 7 лет назад +1

      I think the mix of whimsy and creepy is what makes clowns so scary. You know they're there to make you laugh, but there's this distance between you two where you don't know who is really in the makeup, along wish the fact adults are acting childlike, that sends this feeling of the unknown, which is exactly what scares people.
      Tl;dr fuck off clowns.

    This movie was great to me. Not as scary as I thought but I loved everything about it. To the dude on the left, I think the reason the kids were joking and laughing after they "almost died" is because they didn't think what they had been through was real. I thought that was obvious, that until they had all seen it and talked about it, none of them really thought it was a real thing.

    "They didn't really need Bev's dad."
    Wtf are you talking about dude, her entire character arc relates to abuse at the hands of her father and fears of sexual maturity. Furthermore, the callous, monstrous adults in IT are a metaphor for the mistrust and domination society places on kids and the natural alienation they feel from the adult world. This Alex guy's comments were total horseshit, I must say. Loved the film; a million times better than that awful miniseries which plays way more as a black comedy than a horror flick.

      jnkellogg117 I thought it was quite good. Not amazing or anything but I have no complaints aside a few scenes, and I have seen a wide variety of movies that have bad, mediocre, ok, good, and amazing cgi. The best scene in my opinion to prove my point would be the Deadlight scene, the worst being the lady.

    People don't seem to understand that this is what IT was supposed to be. Also people back in the 80s were like that. Bullies were fucked up. Parents were crazy too. I don't think the guy on the left actually read the fucking book. Kids, when they are with there friends, they actually cuss like that and make jokes like that because I did it when I was younger. And seriously, Bev's dad?! You're shitting me right?! If you cut him out you may as well get rid of that character. That's what leads me to believe he didn't actually read the book. He is so incredibly full of shit. I applaud Joe for calling him out on that.

      Jon Doe - It would be very difficult to a faithful adaptation of the book IT. The book is over 1000 pages long, Stephen King himself said that if he could the mini-series would have been 36 hours long so that he could fit in everything that he wanted. Also as for the jokes they spice up the dialogue between characters. Most people agree that the movie isn't scary, if the kids didn't illicit laughs from the audience the movie would be worse as a whole. Many people have praised the movie for its comedy.

      Also they missed on so many Easter eggs such as the lego turtle who "Sicked up" the creature IT and is also a key character in the Dark Tower series. When the girl signs Eddie's cast with loser but he writes over it as lover is a hint or homage that the loser's club actually genuinely love each other and that was the only way they could escape the "dead lights" in the book. Which brings me to the next one the orange lights in IT's mouth are the dead lights. I know there are more that I missed but those are the ones that stood out to me the most. Also I thought the pacing of the movie was just fine seeing how they had to condense alot of book in to a two part movie.

      He didn't read the book. He doesn't mention what IT is. How he came to earth which was by asteroid. Which a book reader would have answered joes question when he asked how he came to earth. He never talked about the dead lights and told them about them. For the joes clearly didn't know what they were. He complains about bevs dad even though that's how he was in the book although more physically abusive and it gives her way more depth to her character. There was dumb moments but overall a great adaptation probably a 8.5 for me. I liked most changes TBH. The only thing I didn't like was that they never brought up the Turtle and show how it thinks he is so superior and that he is the eater of worlds and of children. Instead they beat the shit out of him with basic weapons. Which makes it look really inferior and doesn't make him seem as threatening. As where in the book they succeeded due to the turtles help. Which shows you need a higher power to truly beat him

    "Georgie didn't scream." You'd be surprised how little pain you feel when shock happens. The more serious the injury, the less immediate you will feel pain. This is coming from a guy who has had his arm badly stabbed, his pelvis shatters in a head on motorbike collision, and a chunk ripped out of his leg. Georgie not screaming was scarily realistic.

The arm healed, but the left knee which oddly enough got a tiny scratch from landing on the asphalt (The right leg lost a chunk, but healed fine) the left knee still gives me random amounts of sharp pain to this day. 8 years on. But you just learn to live with the pain.

      Odd you should mention sharks. The majority of surviving shark victims who recount their story mention that the initial first bite felt like being hit with a blunt object or like being struck by a car. A very dull pain almost a thump like impact, the fear and sudden panic take over and you have no clue what has just happened to you.

      @ladonke8044 7 лет назад +2

      mochiisyum123 dude did you not read my comment he's not meant to look or move normally or like a human so obviously they needed to use a lot of good CGI to make him look and move in an inhuman way if they didn't use CGI he wouldn't have been as scary, if it looked weird then that's the point because he's meant look cartoonish and unrealistic but they used well placed untampered shots of just him but if it stayed that way he wouldn't have been nearly as creepy and scary.

    • @mochiisyum123
      @mochiisyum123 7 лет назад +1

      Harry hurst I did read it, which is why I responded. A lot of it wasn't good CGI, it looked almost too "cartoonish" to where his face became laughable as it was contorting with his teeth etc. That made it less scary for me compared to when he was left untampered. And the goddamn shimmying he did...that was hilarious.

    • @ladonke8044
      @ladonke8044 7 лет назад

      mochiisyum123 mate he was meant to be mix of scary, creepy and funny because he's a clown so ye it was intentional to make him look funny sometimes but I found him creepy a lot of the time and thought he was done really well so yes he was meant to look cartoonistic , that was the original idea for him

    Stephen King's "IT" is my favorite book of all time. I read it at least once a year and I've seen the miniseries almost as many times as I've read the novel. So because I know both previous incarnations of this story as well as I do, I only have one little thing to say.
    Joe, Other Joe, guy on the left that I don't like, do me a favor. Go watch the miniseries again and really get a good idea of what it was, both good and bad. Then go and read the book, cover to cover, and really get a feel for the source material. Then go and watch this new adaptation again and give a better review.
    I can honestly say this is the one film review I've seen that I was disappointed in. Joe, I love the fact that you are pretty much ignorant about the miniseries and the book. It mans you're really getting introduced to IT with fresh eyes. And I appreciate the fact that Other Joe didn't just deify Tim Curry and demonize Bill Skarsgard. But it feels like OJ is kind of looking at this movie like a remake of the miniseries, despite the excellent rating he gave. As for the other guy, if he has, in fact, read the book, then apparently, he doesn't remember even the most basic things about it. Giving this movie a five out of ten just because of one flaw in its flow? That's cold.
    Bill's bike has "silver" written on it because that's it's name. Bill named his bike after the lone ranger's horse. In both the book and the miniseries, he even says "hiyo silver! Away!" somewhat regularly. It's not even a small thing. It's a major plot point in both prior incarnations.
    As for the not quite real way that pennywise moves, that's intentional. He's supposed to be unreal. Hell, in the book, King even goes out of his way to tell you that the clown, the werewolf, all of the manifestations of IT, they don't have a shadow. Or they audibly pop out of existence.
    Stop comparing this to the miniseries. It isn't a remake. It's an actual film adaptation of a book. I agree, there are flaws. But you guys did the one thing I was hoping you wouldn't. You compared this whole thing to the 1990 miniseries, which is the wrong thing to do. Go read the book, find out Stephen King's reasoning for writing it the way he did, watch this movie again, and then do a review. Because then all these things you're complaining about just might make sense.
    I'm disappointed. Joe, you almost always know and understand your source material before reviewing some sort of adaptation. Why didn't you do that with this movie? Why didn't all of you do that? I love you, man. I watch everything you put out. I was really hoping on a really good and educated review with comparisons for my favorite story of all time. I'm sad that you didn't deliver that.

IT is a fun treat to watch (the old series Stephen King) have not seen the new IT but dishing out a score like 9 or 10 which is a masterpiece beyond all, 5 i mean is an ok/good movie while 6 is above average etc, so i will prob see it even if i heard that he gave it a 5 and he reviewed it alone, but Joe and OJ seems to be exited about it so seeing it is an absolute.

    I think the point of the film is that it wasn't trying to stoop to the level of today's modern jumpscare tactics used in paranormal movies. As expected, Tim Curry fanboys wouldn't like this movie. Sorry to break it to some of y'all, but I viewed the old Pennywise more human-like, as the new Pennywise lives up to the "being from another dimension" aspect. The new Pennywise is just plain weird (good weird), and everything he says. is worded jagged like he's been studying humans for hundreds of years. Obviously I find Bill's portrayal magnificent in the sense that he understands that Pennywise isn't just this demonic clown, but more than the physical aspect of the clown. A monster from another world the human race couldn't imagine. He focuses more on that aspect of the character, than Tim Curry's performance which, in my opinion, doesn't convince me that he's a powerful evil being from another dimension. But a good humor character who reminds me of a serial killer dressed up in a clown suit.

      You don't get it at all. The clown is a cover up of the evil. The new pennywise is just Evil all the way through the movie. He wants to feed on children and the lure of the clown is the way he gets that accomplished. Tim Curry version was the more scarier as he was human like and funny and would be the perfect murderer of children. The new pennywise is scaring his meals off.

    Tim's performance is definitely the best thing about the TV series, not denying that at all, but Bill's portrayal of Pennywise is the better Dancing Clown. Curry's Pennywise always struck me as goofy, even as a child which makes the performance all the better considering the rest of the series. Skarsgård breathed menace that was needed into the demonic clown.

    • @BlackangelKatakuri
      @BlackangelKatakuri 7 лет назад

      John I think that's why Curry's was more believable why would It want to scare the kids off immediately wouldn't it make more sense for It lull them into a false sense of security by pretending to be goofy and friendly and then strike ? Also It takes the form of a clown and last I checked it's a clowns job to make people laugh by being goofy and trying to be friendly .

    • @bryandonovanjr.7941
      @bryandonovanjr.7941 7 лет назад +3

      Well said I couldn't agree more! And I will say that each actor was the perfect Pennywise for the 2 different adaptations they starred in.. Curry the perfect Pennywise for a cheesy PG rated 1990 tv mini-series: Skarsgard the perfect Pennywise for an R rated 2017 horror/thriller blockbuster - and neither actor would work as Pennywise in the others adaptation. So to me, it almost boils down to your preference of the better adaptation of IT.. 1990 PG rated made for tv miniseries OR 2017 R rated horror/thriller? To prefer the former I feel you must be so blinded by nostalgia bias or a contrarian douchebag or probably both. I thought the goofy/menancing comparison was spot on. I can't help but relate the comparison to the goofy vs menacing contrast between killers in classic slashers. Say for example Chucky=Curry's Pennywise (far more goofy than menacing) vs Freddy=Skarsgard's

    • @jarg8
      @jarg8 7 лет назад

      John I highly disagree. The new Pennywise was very inconsistently directed and acted. For most of the movie was acting mentally disabled, which made him completely and utterly unscary. Every once and a while he would act cunning and threatening. Overall, he never felt real and he never felt convincing. Tim Curry's was smart, aggressive, ridiculous, and yet always on point. He's so unnerving because of how hard he goes on the acting that it really exposes how much worse the rest of the film is.

      I LOVED the movie, and mostly the special effects in the movie was good.. IMO there were couple of cheesy bad CGI face and body effects that look kinda of a let down. When He was inside of that carnival house, and he started dancing. His Face was stationary awhile his body was jumping up and down, the face looked like it was pasted on the body.. Couple other parts, the cgi looked kinda suspect.. Having said all that, I loved this new version of it and how creepy the effects as a whole was..
