Vinny Raniolo does an amazing great job with rhythm and harmonization. Also, how can be possible that in a such long concert they did not do a single mistake with a wrong chord or a note? That's genius!

We saw them in a restaurant in VA. We had front row seats six feet from them. I play guitar and I watched everything they did like a hawk. Vinny gets some amazing sounds out of that flattop Collings, you don't expect to see that in jazz. It just proves that a great guitarist can get the sounds they want out of their instrument. They are great performers and obviously enjoyed us watching and reacting to everything they did. They did a couple of requests for us, talked with us afterwards, and I will never forget that night.

I was lucky enough to meet Frank and Vinny at a jazz concert here in Evans, GA a few years ago. As a fledgling guitarist for many years they totally blew me away. I told Frank that watching him play gave me an urge to throw my guitar away, as I almost did with my golf clubs when I saw Nicklaus hit a driver for the first time!

@@Blasthoff , yes, this is a sort of dead zone in a lot of ways, isn't it? A friend found out about their return here in March only because he went to the Vignola website.
Before the show, I was coming out of the men's room, turned a sort of corner, and there he was, guitar case in hand, Vignola himself. He saw the shock on my face and laughed. We exchanged a couple of pleasantries and he had to move off to the dressing room. A very nice guy. I wanted to scream, "You know you're the greatest fucking jazz guitarist in the world, don't you?!" but managed to restrain myself.

Frank once told me that when he put out his first CD and advertised it in Just Jazz Guitar Magazine the first check he got in the mail was from my late father (he sent it back, along with the CD). It was Bucky Pizzarelli who told my dad about him, which gives you an idea what the older generation of guitarists thought of Frank when he came on the scene. Great video, except for the abrupt ending mid-Jobim.

I presume your father to be the great guitarist, Tony Mottola? I am in in my 40's and have a selection of his works - Roman Guitar one of my favorites. "Its Sunday" with Sinatra still gives me goosebumps. My Father as a kid in the 60's met him once in Upstate NY when your Father passed through and visited family. I think that is the story. Your Father certainly stands out of the many in the great heritage of outstanding guitarists of Italian extraction.
