  • Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, is a film that grabs life by the ball. Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn), is a charismatic underachiever and proprietor of a rundown gym called Average Joe’s. The facility’s clientele of decidedly less-than-average Joes is made up of a self-styled pirate, a scrawny nerd (Justin Long) who dreams of impressing an unattainable cheerleader, an obsessive aficionado of obscure sports, a dim-witted young man, and a cocky know-it-all who, of course, really knows nothing. Peter’s humble gym catches the eye of White Goodman (Ben Stiller), the power-mullet-sporting, Fu-Manchu-d, egomaniacal owner of Globo Gym, a gleaming monolith of fitness. White intends to take over Average Joe’s, and Peter’s non-existent bookkeeping is making it all too easy for him. A foreclosing bank has stationed attorney Kate Veatch (Christine Taylor) inside Average Joe’s to finalize Globo’s takeover of the gym. Peter’s boyish charm wins her over and Kate joins his team of social rejects to beat the odds.
Actors: Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Justin Long, Christine Taylor, Missi Pyle, Stephen Root, Jason Bateman, Gary Cole, Rip Torn, Alan Tudyk, Chuck Norris

The Hoff actually to this day is convinced he single handedly sang down the Berlin Wall because he gave a concert at the wall and months later the wall went down. He even complained in an interview that the Germans never thanked him for it.
In reality, many Western musicians gave concerts in East Germany or near the wall by the time. It was die to the Eastern government lowering restrictions for Western artists to appease the people who were protesting more and more openly.

Greetings from Germany. The Hoff is famous here for "Knight Rider" and "Baywatch".
And a German music producer pushed him in any German show to sing "Looking for Freedom". It was Number One in our Billboard Charts!
So David became a successful singer. And because of the lyrics ("Freedom") it get more famous through the Fall of the Berlin Wall time. He was allowed to perform at New Year‘s Eve a few weeks after the Fall.
He was a big star at that time but not so big as you think. But I still laugh at the jokes.
The Hoff did not think that he brought the Wall down. That was just a joke at that time. "On a later tour of Germany in 2004, Hasselhoff would lament that a photo of him was lacking from the Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin."

  • @jillk368

Your laugh is so contagious. Please do Mel Brooks. P.S. Ben Stiller's parents were Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller. They met as budding comedians up in the Borscht Belt, Meara being Irish and Stiller Jewish. They became a beloved comic duo and still made appearances together in their later years. They also both did projects independently of each other. King of Queens is a great place to watch Stiller (Meara as well, but she had a more limited role). She was in quite a few movies, though, which is where I got captivated by her (didn't even know she was a comic at that point). Anyway, they were great. I think he just passed away last year, and Meara about two years before that. Ben Stiller looks exactly like their two faces combined. Suggestions: Mel Brooks Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part I, Spaceballs. Also check out Monty Python stuff. My favorite is Holy Grail. Life of Brian and Meaning of Life are pretty great too. Some other funny movies are Knives Out, Clue and The Birdcage. Anyway, all the best.

Okay, so here's a bit of really fun trivia for you: Ben Stiller (White) and Christine Taylor (Kate) are married in real life. It makes their interactions in the movie that much funnier. So glad this movie was in your comedy "wheelhouse". Seems you really appreciated and enjoyed this brand of humor.

Hi James! Great choice today! I love this movie, but I have a little "fun fact" from my childhood back in the 1970s. At school, we played Dodgeball with those rubber balls. At home, however, the alley we played in, was basically a hill. Throwing uphill was not usually a problem. But throwing downhill... that ball (or any ball, really) got away from us pretty easily. It would roll all the way down the hill, to the cross street, and that was our "border". We weren't allowed to cross that without a parent with us. So, being the inventive little shit that we were, we opted to use Frisbees to play Dodge with. If it got past us, it would float to the ground and stay there. Now, the downside to this is that if you think those red rubber balls hurt when they smacked you in the face... imagine what that hard plastic edge of a Frisbee felt like. Of course, back in those days, a cut or a bruise was common, but fairly well ignored by the older generations. "It's not that bad. Walk it off."
I love seeing the look on people's faces when I tell them about that. All those scrapes, scratches, and bruises toughened us up. We were kids, we didn't see anything wrong with taking a Frisbee upside the head. Of course, we also played a game called "Smear the Queer", where someone was chosen at random, chased down and take a little beating (nothing too bad, really), then they got to pick the next "Queer", and we'd keep on going for a while. Needless to say, we got a LOT of exercise back then. lol.
Also, the actor who played the nerdy looking guy who fell in love with the ugly Russian woman, he starred in another movie I think you'd like called "Grandma's Boy". I forget his name, but I like him. He's a good actor.
You know me, I'll edit as needed. =D
Speaking of... Steve the Pirate. Alan Tudyk. You may not recognize the name, but he played K2-SO in Rogue One. He wasn't just the physical "on set" of the character, but he also voiced him.

@@AwesomeUSMovies Yeah, man... growing up pre-2000 was risky. The 1970s were fun as Hell, but it's a wonder any of us lived through it. Illegal fireworks, toy guns that looked and sounded real, the ability for a child to buy cigarettes and alcohol with a well written note from "the parents", building ramps to jump over things with our bikes, not wearing helmets when riding out bikes.... I could go on. I was a teenager in the 80s, going into shady pool halls, malls, arcades, pizza joints.... playing with black powder (I was in a Civil War Reenactment group) and firearms, going to concerts... it was a free for all. But I wouldn't change a thing.

Loved your reaction to this classic!
Regarding Lance Armstrong, he really was a scapegoat for anti-doping at the time because he won the most and was the most famous. Investigations into the Tour de France found that to find a CLEAN cyclist, you would have to go down the rankings into the 10's and 20s. Even now, an estimated 65% of the aggregate top 10s are involved in some form of this "cheating". Not trying to change your mind on the topic or anything, but you admittedly have been holed up for a while, and I wasn't sure if you were aware of this.
There is an incredible documentary, Icarus (2017), that covers this and much more about doping in the Olympics, which might make for a really interesting reaction if it interests you at all.
