- Dumping out two 16 ton loads with an International Paystar dump truck, then spreading it out on a muddy driveway with a Bobcat 864 tracked skid steer.

Hey Andrew, i run my own business and have done for a very long time. One thing i've learnt when it comes to pricing is it doesn't matter what the others charge... if you're happy with what you are getting for that job that's all that matters .. honests days pay for a honest days work as the saying goes.... don't become that person that overcharges just because you can .. if you stick to this rule you will always have work
That is also my opinion. If everyone involved is satisfied, you are always right at the right price.
The guy in my area does cheap work when he can, In some cases if it is a quick hour or 2 job that does not have a time constraint will do it dirt cheap.
Some jobs can be done cheaper if you know they will be repeat business. My guy has done work cheap or free for me. I also have access to equipment and can do said work my self.

I remember hearing an axiom about how most small businesses end up spending 90% of their time on the worst 10% of their customer base. Different saying but same moral: don't worry too much about losing that bottom 10%
Very true. When I raised my prices a lot of the "problem customers" disappeared. I was worried about losing customers but in fact I gained more customers than I lost.
Got that from my ex-father-in-law....in the end my 10% was his daughter. I stopped negotiating with customers long ago.

skid steer rate $ 90.00 to $130.00 per hour add 10% for used of attachments ,Gravel price if includes hauling is Ok , tree price is good - because of angle and location,danger of doing the job . Most companies would have had 3 to 4 staff at the job site . Then if you have your county licence , WCB- workers comp , 5 million insurance . Andrew you are very talented and get the job done .You make it look easy !! You gave your clients the best service ever . Great Job !!!!

Andrew, I had my 850 driveway smoothed and topped with 3/4 rough roadbase (that what they call it in western Colorado). Also about 32 tons. Total cost with delivery of the rock, taxes and tips $1800. It took the guy about 4 hours total. And by the way, I was completely happy with both the job and cost.
Andrew, you always have great videos. Thanks for always Educating and teaching us how to do things. I know its not always easy, but you make it seem so. You give us all encouragement, and show us the correct way things should be done. Thanks for always sharing, and allowing us to be part of your life. Having some experience with contractor pricing, I think you should be targeting about $95 an hour on labor. This should give you a good margin on all of your incidental expenses and give you some left over for heavy equipment maintenance. I estimated your labor at about 12 man-hours (you may have taken longer, but a bigger contractor would have done your work in about 6 clock-hours with two guys). Given your materials cost, this put your labor rate around $60/hr. If you had billed out at $95 the job would have cost the customer $1,600 and I would doubt they would be able to get a bid cheaper than that on the work you did. The firewood after cut and seasoning was worth maybe $150. Of course, keep billing the customer a flat rate for the job, don't itemize unless they ask for it, and if they do, don't inflate the price of your materials. Show them what it costs you, and put the extra in labor. It will make you seem more trustworthy in your billing.
I think he also factors in Diesel and equipment costs to haul it hence why it was $600. Either way his rates are very reasonable plus it seems he gets a lot in trade to in a lot of videos. Here it looks like he got free firewood.

I just realized this and then Andrew mentioned how the guy hasn't gotten back to him about the tree removal. Wonder if the that changed the homeowner's mind about staying with Andrew for the rest of the work on the property.

I learn more in watching one video with Andrew, than I do watching 5 videos somewhere else. I love how you stop what you are doing and fix stuff that you find broken, even in the middle of other work. That is how I work and I appreciate those who do the same. I also very much enjoy how you handle not getting involved with the troll comments and just refer to everything as youtube. You have calm, patient demeanor that makes watching your videos enjoyable and relaxing. Keep up the great work. PS, love seeing your dogs along with you in everything you do. Although I am not a pet owner myself, I can tell how you treat people based on how you treat your animal friends.

I keep watching these videos, Andrew Camarata is some sort of wizard. Levi is clearly one good dog. What a loyal friend. Spent a summer running a Komatsu excavator, front end loader, and a bulldozer while helping build a shooting range in Vermont. Mostly pulled stumps and buried them. Only drove the dozer once, hardest thing ever to do right. Lucky some old timer showed me how on his equipment. Good times.
Your pricing is about right son for the job. I live in Eastern Kentucky and that's about what people around here would charge. You payed $460 for the stone , add $100 for each load haul bill, then $125-$150 per hour for the Skid Steer , depending on how long it took you to spread the gravel. Also the removal of the fire wood added to that , so I would say that was a good price. You are a hard working young man, and seem to be an honest one. You go above and beyond what lot of people do when doing a job for people.I'am 68 years old and I have 4 sons and 1 daughter, I have been a Mechanic all my life. I sort of do things the way you do...a lot of people find fault with the way you do some things but son don' t let them bother you. I have done it that way for years and it works. I read one comment on your video about welding.......the person commented that ( It's evident that you were not a certified welder ) well my response to that is this .....Being certified is well and fine but it's like being ASC certified as a mechanic......most people go 3 or 4 times to take the test to be ASC certified and finally pass......This doesn't make them a good Mechanic just means he or she has a piece of Paper.......Two of my son's are mechanics and I' am proud of them and if you were my son I would be Proud of you.....keep up the good work and remember this the customer comes first.
Hi Andrew, I have property in Sullivan County NY, when I get stone delivery, its usually 22 tons and I pay $500- $600 per delivery, and I have to spread it myself with my tractor. Thats what I'm paying here. You should always start high and then make the customer chew you down, but stay firm. Remember its your time, your equipment , gas, etc. Hope this helps.

1. Your gut feeling about the customer and job.
2. Current competition pricing in your area, which you should know.
3. Your insurance, gas, diesel, and time are relevant to Your bottom line.
I agree with Matt that You are worth a $1000 day above and beyond material costs, but then again only YOU know what You need to make to be happy....
MAYBE...a good rule of thumb would be 150% of material costs when materials are a good part of the job, but since some jobs are are more labor intensive than others...again... only You can gauge the abstracts of You work and what to charge....I enjoy Your videos and You are a very talented young man...ALL THE BEST!!

Your right around target I charge 150.00 for 5 tons delivered, 150 x 7 loads equals 1,050.00 plus spreading it (your time) etc and I live about 2 hours north west of you , I have a 10 ton dump but a old 78 C50 that has juice brakes and a v8 350 gas so 5 tons safely!!! Lol keep up the good work my son and I love the videos and Levi, we have a goat named Olaf in our videos Whitehouse Farm on RUclips you inspired us and it's a blast!!!!
You forget that he pulled half a dozen tree stumps. Cleaned up the other tree crap and hauled it out.
@@SteveP-vm1uc 100% agree but you also have to look at to get the jobs people always ask if you can clear some brush move stumps ,move downed trees etc along with the initial intended job and if you already got the equipment there and as you saw in the video doesn't take much to do, the best thing from doing the extra stuff is they will most likely recommend you to friends or other people and you'll get more jobs and money out of doing the extra work, some contractors have alot of work and give high estimates because if they don't get the job it's no big deal because they have so many other jobs but if they do get it they are making more money from the high estimate, for smaller guys on there own this is a way of making decent money with a little extra work but hopefully will pay more with future jobs and money!

Hello, Andrew. I like a lot of your viewers have been in business a lot of years. When I price a job I keep in mind that I have to earn loyalty, not just with price but performance and friendly service. I know my costs and work up from there but there is always the ones that are out there that work only on price and forget the other parts of the equation and will undercut my bids. I have learned that if I get a shot at a return job it is probably because of this ethic that has kept me in business for fifty years. What you charge is probably moot if th customer is happy. I would of went with $1500 for that job and took the wood home first to split it, so the job would look more complete quicker. For me personally, you price the job "what you can get" people that price to low, are there own worst enemy. Business owners price the job
based on what they would pay for the work themselves, and most times are only hurting themselves. There is nothing wrong with getting paid. Price to cheap and you'll never get that brand new equipment that you deserve to have = missed opportunities...
@@denniswinspear7478 yes and high quote on the tree. equipment involved aka man lift and other assorted assets plus their insurance would cover some if not all the costs if you are properly certified which meens fuckall in this business
@gavinhirt I think most people don't understand the sticker shock of living in the woods. Sure the taxes are lower than in developed towns and cities, but people need to realize that they need to set aside enough money for things like driveways that would normally be paid for in higher taxed municipalities. Upfront costs may seem high but they need to consider the lifespan of the driveway improvements and spread out that cost and save each year for it's eventual replacement.
The spreading of the costs is called amortization. Just as the driveway depreciates every year so does Andrew's equipment and that also needs to be taken into account. Another thing, just because Andrew does his own work on his equipment doesn't mean he shouldn't get paid for it at the going rate for mechanics. All of these factors should be considered in the price of the job.
@@timbuck2505 you know we're he lives and works right. The Hudson river valley about an hr train ride to NYC they can afford it. Judging by the landscape and home design of the customer that person can afford it because they want a beach house in the biggest toxic waste dump in the US aka the whole river is one big super fund site. Google map Hudson NY turn west 1 hr drive to Albany go south 2 hr to never drive to the city

That price is very fair, for hauling, bringing skid steer and your time. Everyone sees you work and don't really know the time u put in learning how to be so proficient knowing how much gravel and skill with skid steer. U make it look too easy!!! The thing I noticed about Andrew is that he is not afraid of work and does a nice job. He stays late to get the work done. I see a great work ethic that will definitely pay good dividends since others will noice it. My only concern is that he pushes too hard on the body by not lifting correctly with his legs. Back issues will creep into his life and will no longer be able to do the work once he reaches his 50s and 60s. Back pain will become the norm. Suggest Andrew being good to his back!
If I were hiring people again, I would not hesitate to hire Andrew because of the work ethic, but also for many of the skills he has learned. Young people today could learn a lot from him since there is no free ride in life and you reap what you sow. Great Job Andrew!!!!👍👍👍

First of all, you do an amazing job on every project! As far pricing, I knew, when you didn’t blow away the leaves and debris before spreading the gravel, this was a low budget job.....availability of the rock in your area makes the material cost very low, compared to my location in north Mississippi.
Looks like you spent the better part of a full day in total, so $1200 looks too cheap to me.....here, I would have to pay about $480 per load for stone and delivery....operator and skid steer runs about $120/ hour. Based on that, a reasonable market price to the homeowner would be
Around $1800-$2000..... but, finding someone who will throw in the woodpile cleanup and be as conscientious as you......not likely 😎

Great video. I'm guessing the two loads + cost for delivery+ cost for spreading out, and cost for cleanup and disposal . $1200 total seems like the customer got a $15 hundred dollar job for a bargain price
You may be right. A bunch of the comments are saying that was a $1,500 or $1,600 job. So he left a couple hundred on the table. Plus he did that tree stump cleanup? Sounds like cust got a good deal.
Also he bid $800 for the tree and didn’t hear back. I bet the cust finds someone cheaper to do it. The customer could just be that type. No loyalty, Just always go with the cheapest.

Andrew, I contract a lot of jobs similar to what you do but on a bit larger scale. Here in Texas at least where I am located, the price of gravel tends to be a fair amount higher. Pricing for most aggregate starts around $30 a ton for crushed concrete, limestone is around $32 a ton, and a number 2 stone like I see you use a lot tends to average around $38 a ton. That job here I would charge $2000-$2200, plus any additional cleanup, such as what you did, on an hourly basis. I believe your labor rates are fairly similar and accurate, the material cost here is the main difference.

People that haven't tried to run a machine and come up with nice results don't realize the talent and experience it takes. Dang, Ive always wondered about pricing and what you charge for your work. I legitimately think you are very fair in your pricing and could probably charge a tad more for most of your work, Tree quote was a little high but i agree, Risk vs Reward.

AGREED !! at least $400.00 more... he used FOUR vehicles... he must add in FAIR MARKET VALUE for the repairs he does on his old equipment .. those vehicles would cost others BIG BUCKS
Andrew go out and check what it costs to RENT that equipment ... that's the price you need to charge for it's use
It can get pretty shocking what they charge to take down a tree. Insurance will go up if there is any problem. A neighbor got a quote for a similar tree and one service wanted $3,000. He and his son did it with the winch on his sons truck.

There's other ways of looking at it Andrew. If you charge more you have to pay more taxes. More social security, more fisa.
If you can live on what you're charging, and your prices are reasonable, maybe even a bargain.I don't know how much advertising you do or if you depend on word-of-mouth for your work. Just a thought.

Tree removal is done kinda different here ... where I am ... take it down and cut it up and leave it lay 450 ,Brush clean up 50 , wood removal 150 and stump removal 150 ... if you give more options they can pick what to have done ...... kinda makes a Jagged pill easier to swallow .....God bless .... thanks for sharing.... hope I didn’t offend.....enjoy the videos Andrew

I am glad you told us the prices, I have no idea if its the right price to charge or not. Having said that I find knowing the prices to make the videos more understandable and your business more understandable. I am a Canadian living in Bangkok Thailand and I only watch RUclips and Netflix, out of all the videos I watch... yours are my favourite. Man you have a tool for everything, ha ha ha. That may be part of the reason but I’m sure it’s only a small part of why his channel is enjoyable. By the way I’m glad he’s charging enough for his work $800 for that tree seems reasonable partly because he has to come along way for that job.

Great video Andrew !!! Your price seems a little low if you years ago I worked for Mastrocola Hauling a local Tri - axle Dump truck company outside Philadelphia.
so you picked up 32 tons of three-quarter inch atone 32 tons $230 load $460 in materials. Total charge $1,200 so $740 profit Well not exactly there’s your time/ labor, fuel ⛽️ , maintence, insurance, Fuel being the most expensive so in all I think you probably made $300 or $400 profit. I definitely think you could’ve charged more somewhere around $1,400. Your price is good but I think the quality of your work you’ve could’ve charged more, Just my thought !!!
Yes the end out come was really good and if i was the customer even 1600 was a good deal since he also cleaned up the woods which was definitely quite a chunk of labour
Michael Garofalo I was from outside of Philly too. AC has to tell himself how much HE wants paid each week for, say, a 50hr week. His equipment per hour is X-Dollars/. He has to get X% return on that metal investment..per hour. His maintenance estimate is so much per year divided by the work hrs per week..per year. REPLACEMENT of entire machines is X-Dollars per year. He divides THAT by his annual hours of machine time. Every machine chips into the replacement charity bucket. His real estate us an investment deserving of X% return on it too. All in all he has to charge X$/Hr per machine. Obviously the skid loader doesn't get what the Cat does etc. AC can "average" the ANNUAL NUT COSTS over the different size machines. It's an ART and a SCIENCE. This is where his accountant can indeed be helpful in ALLOCATING COSTS. BUT on any given day, AC knows whether he wants his assets 'to sit idle' or get out there and make revenue.
