Thanks to Jesse for making the intro and graphic for us to enjoy!!
One tech for multiple car or truck issues… three techs for one small lawnmower issue… gotta love boys and their toys…. Awesome
Just think, that would have taken 6 astronauts to do.
Why is it that heralded mechanics always seem to neglect their own powered equipment?? C'mon Ray, keep that "S" on your chest...!!
I would gladly watch another lawnmower get fixed. That was pretty cool.
Yeah...beats some plumbing jobs
Can't wait when your channel B videos you guys flying kites😊
"Watch out Dave it's... smokin"😂
I used to like lawnmower/small engines and thought Briggs & Stratton was a great American business story - until incompetent and/ or dishonest management after years of running down the reputation finally gave themselves a big bonus and then within a day or so declared bankruptcy - although the Tecumseh engines(made Craftsman for Sears) seemed to run a bit better or have a bit more real world power
B & S I believe a long time ago used to support its customers and servicing people well and provided for education or information for aspiring mechanics
did they succeed in the 1950s at what Vega failed at in the 1970s ? (Aluminum bore engine)
A video of fixing law mowers is deffrent from the normal content variety is the spice of life so keep them coming
IN the first few moments, I thought I was watching a Chicanic video. She fixes small engines, particularly two-stroke yard tools.
My grandma always had bad gas but was never from a burnt push rod
Well, that can also be good gas. 😮
Hmm... She ever try "Beano for nasty grandma bad gas? Take beano 3x per day...
😂😂
😂😂😂
Bad gas? That's funny, my wife unit says that about me!
YES! Make another lawn mower video. Who knows, the other may need more work than the Toro and we'll be in for a treat.
At the start “we got no gas” at the end going round the car park “we got no grass”😂😂
Pushrod is still bent and was rotating because there's a large gap between the lifter and the push rod. Change them all.
He mentions that at the end of the video
A time machine, a skid steer, a kit car and now a zero turn, let's see the next mower. I love the adventure, the skill and determination.😊
Varnish in the skunked gas condenses on the valve stems and they stick in the guides when it gets hot. Worked on this stuff for 40 years. Bad gas paid for our house.
That’s good to hear, lazy homeowners paid for mine and much much more, colleges too.
Lol I repair stuff like this but also fix and upkeep cabins for people who only come up for the summer or live out of state. I work 3 months and take the rest of the year off.
had a friend in the mower repair biz he says the same thing old fuel bought him his car and house both very nice too
Wow, dueling lawnmowers! One for Ray and one for the Wife Unit. Way to go Ray!
I find small engine repair relaxing after dealing with new car technology all week.
Till you start seeing the new fuel injected mowers. I know there not really complex. I say we go back to the flat head mower days.
@@bobbysenterprises3220 And the flat head car engine days as well!
@stevekehr6768 Try 'The Bearded Mechanic' working on motorcycles and his buddy Dan on the camera and extra help. It's nice to see something smaller get repaired and/or resurrected.
Chikanic may be one for you, then.
@@garypillischafske1425 oops, for a second I thought you said flat head drivers
Yes you need more videos on small engine repairs in the springtime when everybody's getting ready to cut their lawns thank you very much
Love it when you do something out of the usual, brings out a different side of you, especially when Dave is along for the ride! Two guys, who know their stuff, having some fun? What is there not to love?
Hammer time with Dave, Dave for the win 😂👍
That intro was so on point, definitely vibing with it.
Mower resurrection. Quite instructive in a fun way.
You need to set valve lash I believe it’s 0.006 that will release compression so it will start easier
You are braver than I. I wouldn’t even think of reusing a bent pushrod. 😮
Rainman Ray's small engine shop
🤔💡
😊his shop is pretty big.....😊😊😊😊
My Kohler engine did the same thing! And now I know how to fix it! Thanks a million for posting this video.
Would love to see a video about the other lawnmower!🇨🇦
Do you even have grass in Canada?😂 JK. I’m half French-Canadian. My mother’s side of the family is from the Sherbrooke area. Came to New England to work in the textile mills in the 1880’s. Go Bruins…if you’re a hockey fan.

Thanks, I have a Kohler 7000, near 20 years old, never a problem, mows an acer every two weeks, Now when something does go wrong I can fix it thanks to Rainman Ray!
Your Koehler was probably cast iron everything, this one only has cast iron sleeves
Actually, the engine over-heated due to the cooling fins being dirty. It caused the valve guides to expand and not allow for lubrication. It's a common problem with all the v-twin mower engines. Make sure the cooling fins are fully cleaned and put in NEW push rods. They are cheap enough and you can get them in a couple days.
Right. replaced alot of pushrods and not from bad gas in Kohler. Being in Florida the ambient temp and humidity is already high.
I am a heavy equipment tech. Sometimes I get handed the Briggs and Kohler Big Blocks. They over heat and let a exhaust valve seat come loose. Causes a lot of damage. New head(s) Keep fins clear of debris and use 20w - 50 oil. These engines run hot.
Ray: _"The engine won't start with the seat up."_
Also Ray: *starts the engine with the seat up a bunch of times*
Most will start and run with seat up as long as brake applied.
Mine was a single wire to a switch. I disconnected it the first week I had it...
I probably would not document/record disconnecting the seat safety switch either. Jusay'n, the "Safety Vultures" would decent in droves.
@@ORRadtech well duh. With it enabled you can't aim it to drive under low hanging tree branches and then hop off to let it roll forward on auto pilot before climbing back on when it emerges on the other side.
Your situation mirrored mine. I had a truck with multiple gas tanks and I let one of the tanks get stale with old gas in it. I had to make an unplanned trip and ended up using the stale fuel on the return leg of the trip. The engine ran just fine on the trip, except for the old paint smell, but the next morning when trying to start it to go to work it cranked but wouldn't start. All the intake valve pushrods were bent on the Ford 390. I assumed the problem was the timing chain slipping but my machinist, after just smelling the heads, told me the valve stems were glued to the valve guides by the gunk formed by the old gas. He was right. He said one carburetor full was enough to ruin an engine; new tight unworn engines are more likely to be affected than older worn ones because there is less clearance on the valve stems. I've often wondered if some sort of oil or solvent applied through the intake manifold before shutdown would have prevented it seizing up.
Was it ethanol gas ?
@@davidpowell3347 I don't know, it was around 1992.
@@pixelpatter01 Probably before the ethanol gas era although I think there were a couple years where it was dispensed in some areas only during the winter months of the year but gasoline does go bad even if it doesn't have ethanol/alcohol but I think it takes longer
I suppose a good fuel stabilizer helps but I don't think it solves the problem of ethanol gas absorbing water from the air, becoming corrosive and eventually having water/ethanol mix precipitate out to the bottom of whatever tank or container it is in
it helps if your gas cans seal well
Some fuel stabiliser in the gas tank might have saved it.
@@davidpowell3347 It was likely before ethanol in gasoline was the norm. It was long before I knew gasoline preservatives existed or why. There are lots of reasons gasoline can go bad such as water being attracted by alcohol, the more volatile 'fines' evaporating and changing the flash point but the one that caused my problem was oxygen reacting with certain parts ( carbon=carbon double bonds) of the gasoline and forming a gum like varnish that goes into the carb and deposits on the intake valve guide. So one answer is to use preservatives and keep air (oxygen) away.
This took me back to the early 70s, I had a second hand minibike with a crappy engine. I reworked a larger 3.5 HP Tecumseh engine which made it a whole lot better. This is where I learned the basics of engines and was a great experience that has paid dividends all throughout my life.
'69 Rupp with a 3-1/2 Tecumseh here.
I know my local mower repair place would tell me I needed a new mower.
I have a 46 inch Toro with the same engine. I have a hard time finding gasoline without ethanol so I have started using Trufuel for both my mower and the 50:1 version for my weed eater. Great product in my opinion. Loved the video. Nice change of pace.
Aspen 2 and 4 work very well also, no build up.
I live in northern illinois were all gas has ethanol. I cross the line into Wisconsin to buy 91 octane non-ethanol gas. Expensive but beats $24/gallon Trufuel. For several years I was putting Trufuel into my Cub with Kohler 18hp engine. Regular gas would make the engine run rough and I was having starting issues.
Before I was forced to retire, that is the work I was doing. Interesting how different it is from automotive, but yet the same. It is hard to explain to people how old stale gas can affect those engines.
I’m impressed the oil filter is larger than some cars use.
i dig the mower fix. my dad war a wrench and a welder all my life. most of my life he worked on heavy equipment, quarry machines and such. but i watched him work on sewing machines, lanterns, cars, motorcycles etc. if it ran fuel he worked on it.
Yes. Would love a video on other mower. Some of us are only driveway unlicensed mechanics. So smaller engine repairs is very useful for us..
Please keep up the sarcastic and funny commentaries regardless of what haters say.
Never use gas with alcohol. And always store the lawn mower out of the rain. ☔️. Doing both will avoid this disaster. Replace pushrods. Adjust valves.
running the carby out of fuel every time before stopping is also VERY beneficial if not run for a couple of weeks or longer i do every time i run a small motor
You might want to replace the lifter cover gaskets, too. Keep the dirt out.
And only use alcohol for the mowee not the mower
Love the slow motion
Yes, please do the second mower. It has a more betterer engine on it and I love me some small engine and mower repair. I think you should have seen more oil getting to the top end when you had that valve cover off. (Sounded like you thought so too) When you order the push rods, order head gaskets so you can pull the heads and do a thorough cleaning and inspection. Probably have a clogged oil passage. And, also, look up and set the valve lash when you put the new push rods in.
I'm a small engine mechanic that's on my lunchbreak as I'm typing this. I'm doing this job today. The valve seat broke loose and belt the valves. I just got the head back together and have it running like top
Came here to get my fix and I get a great lawnmower repair video. I doubt Ray is struggling for work, but if so he could add lawnmowers to his service list.
You might need to adjust the valve clearance. Very Tappy tap taps.
That must have been some BAD gas. My wife ran out of gas in the red cans and didn't know it wasn't gas in the yellow can. Filled the riding mower with diesel. It ran, but poorly. She couldn't get it to start after she shut it down the next time. After draining the diesel and refilling with gas it ran better than ever!
That was really interesting to see the valves in action and the slow motion was used to great effect. Would happily watch another lawnmower video.
Good day Ray. Like to witness your skills and talent. Dave is such an asset that you will have to keep him around. He rocks. We always like to see you work on stuff, it brings out your inner child. Click!! 😂😂😂😂
Good day again, I just got the ‘wrong parts issue’ with Amazon. They told my kid that the part they sent her would work, it didn’t. Wrong part to make a sale and part number wasn’t even close to the correct part number. Gravity!!!’ Best to wife unit and of course Dave.
You need to set valve clearance.
just getting by until the new pushrods come ?
are those lifters hydraulic ? (Might still require some kind of adjustment)?
@@davidpowell3347 Usually .004-.008 depending on manufacture specs. on intake and exhaust.
What about the oiling issue in that cyl head.. are there oiling holes somewhere in there?
Sound the general alarm! Battle stations, lawnmower. All hands. Rays mower won’t mow. And it’s Florida, where stuff grows no matter what.
That yellow diesel can gave me flashbacks. Last year, I inadvertently put diesel (had it in a red can) in my ZT mower, ran great for about 30 seconds! Had to flush carb, lines, tank, & replace fuel filter.
Really fun to also see small engine repairs! More of that too please!
I've worked on small engines for over 50 years. Gasoline issues were a major problem on most repairs.
In northeast Florida it has rained a bunch for 2 plus weeks. My lawn is 8 to 10"s high and akin to a big sponge. If I drive the Snapper onto the lawn the mower will sink out of sight! Might as well watch Ray fix stuff.😀
born this day ramon ray’s auto and mower repair
I think it’s always nice to have some good mechanics video even with lawnmower.
Yes, would love to see you fix the other mower.
hi Ray, i quite enjoyed the change from the usual.
Just wondered whether the oil level was ok after being run as the valves seemed to not be getting any lubrication.
My Chevrolet Citation V6 with dual valve springs (one inside the other) certainly threw a whole lot more oil up there when I started it with a rocker cover off
That mower had a pit crew almost a large as a NASCAR driver.
Nothing is more fun, than doing donuts on a zero-turn.
Great video. Fantastic job of diagnosing and fixing the problem. It's a great reminder of the importance of using fresh fuel and regular maintenance.
Love this video Ray. I work on small engines from time to time and I enjoy watching others work on them. Don’t get me wrong your automotive content is what brought me to you a few years ago but I enjoy all of your mechanical content. Thank you for entertaining me and helping to fuel my desire to learn. Let me know when you make your way back to the great mitten state.
Dave is the man always ready to help
Wow that slow motion shot of the slightly bent pushrod was pretty hilarious!
Fantastic video Ray.... Really enjoyed it!
You owe us six sounds for using your brake cleaner. Lol I think you are an awesome mechanic and a very hilarious individual to watch
😂 I noticed he's cut down on the use of brake cleaner😅
LOVED the mower video... We may not all have a Duramax Diesel or even any of the cars that you work on, but many of us have riding mowers. Great change-up. Yes, please let us see your work on the other mower- even if you feel it might be better presented on your other channel. Great stuff!
Love the small engine repair content. Still learned a thing or two ✌️
Let's see the other mower repair. Interesting activity.
Welcome back one handed Ray 😎 we missed you
Your commentary is on Flo with your work. I find it educating and funny at the same time it's hard to find people that can make good videos like that keep up the good work bro
Hey...A mower vid every once in a while is cool for me because some of your content is way beyond my mechanical levels. That's why I have you.
Runs on gas? Ours in the UK run on liquid 😉
Had to laugh when you were driving the mower. Reminded me of The Waterboy and was just waiting for you to take it out on the road too. 😂😂
Thanks for the video as always, I really enjoy this channel.
Brought me back to my high school days in small engines class
Well done, and yes, please do a video on the other mower! Actually, open a small engine shop within your shop. Advertise "Rainman Ray's automotive and Dave's small engine repair" 😮😂😂
YES more lawnmower vids
Ray, PLEASE make a video about the repair of the second mower. THANKS!
I was a Sears tech for a few years, I saw this a couple of times, I removed tthe heads and cleaned the valve stems and replaced the pushrods out of my van in the customers driveway.
"Tapperoo". I enjoy how small engines have their own language lol
I did the same thing many years ago. I had a vehicle with 13 year old gas in it. I drained the tank, and put some of the bad gas in my Briggs flathead mower. For months after that, I had to pop the intake valve closed with a bent screwdriver (thru the spark plug hole) every time I wanted to start it when cold. Once running it was OK. Problem cured itself by getting rid of the mower.
Send it to Chickanic! She can fix it!
nice change of pace! And infromative as well! Thanks!!
Wainman Ray’s Rawnmower shop - Love it ! ❤️ Yes please, let’s see ya work ya wrenchin’ magic on the Kwacker mower as well !! 🤪🤪 Great video as always guys, and a great team collaboration. 👍👍
RAY'S MOWER REPAIR!! watching us is like watching painted grass dry!!!😂😂😂😂 J/K
So you pop the hood with German accent, count in Spanish and apologize in French… it wouldn’t surprise me if you barked, meowed or mooed next 😎
That's gold 😂😂
When the Briggs v two s get hot the stems stick in the guides and stay open. The pistons usually try and help close them for you.
OUCH
RainmanRay's lawn equipment repairs....I like it!
Most definitely on lawnmower repair something different for a change!!!😅
Yes please, i enjoy the small engine stuff to.
It was nice seeing something different. Small engines can be fun to fix. I have a Cub Cadet RZT50 and it bent some pushrods from getting too hot and I think low on oil. It was working all day mowing the back field. Probably got too much grass in the cooling fins. I put used heads on it too not knowing why it stuck the valves. It has the Briggs and Stratton 18hp V twin. I've fixed a lot of stuff on it. Rebuilt the deck after some of it rusted away. Let's see you fix the other one. I have about 14 pushmowers to fix sometime too. 5 walk behind snoblowers, 7 gas weed whackers.. the list goes on.
engines are engines! thx Ray Dave and Justin
I liked that, good to see you working on a lawnmower, looks like you have two great employees there. Well done lads, you have a lot to put up with, with Ray but you couldn't find a better employer.
I love to watch you guys struggle with these mower.
Your lawn mower has a brake clean slash cup holder!
And... There's Your Dinner!
This is payback for Taryle fixing that Jeep??
Even if it is rocket science, mechanical repairs are the same. A second video is in order, who knows if it has different problems than the one just repaired. I work for the County Council, cleaning the Palace Grounds, cutting grass and performing maintenance on all machines used, so if needed, I can use the video for reference.
Good fun watching Ray and Justin cutting grass that doesn't exist. Parking lot looks better this way. 😂
No oil in the upper valvetrain is indicative of valvelash being too loose.
The oil is fed up the pushrods. If the valves are not lashed correctly, oil pressure into the rockers will not be achieved.
Also, there is the possibility that the rocker studs have been pushed out of the head.
Those Kohler twin cylinder engines hold up pretty good. They'll run for many hour with good routine maintenance.
Lawn Mower restoration….YES!!
The push rod is still bent
That was enjoyable Hope to see more!
Let's see another! 😁
Good to see all the guys pitch in on this one..TEAM WORK.
