This video was originally the January 2020 Patreon Bonus Video, I have since discontinued making bonus video and decided to slowly start uploading the former videos to the channel for everyone who hasn't seen them but is interested. This is one of the older Patreon videos I'm uploading to the public that I largely still agree with, the placements at least, some of the reasoning is a little iffy. The editing is incredibly limited however, but whatever, here it is... also I have widely changed my mind about Griffith and that 'Poorly Written' video was scrapped a long time ago.

Am I the only one who feels the same way as him about Berserk fights?
Most of the time they're just delaying the rich and powerful character moments we all read Berserk for...
I mean, they're still cool and all, but I don't long for them the same way I do those quiet, beautiful scenes.

    • @guts2016
      @guts2016 Год назад +2

You say they're delaying the rich a beautiful character moments but you're forgetting the fact that every single one of the characters met each other through fighting. How did Guts meet the band of the hawk? Through flighting as a mercenary. How did he and Griffith grow closer together? Through fighting. How did Guts and Casca start developing their relationship? Through flighting together before Guts stayed behind to protect her, through flighting 100 men. How did Guts meet Puck? Through saving his life by fighting. How did he meet Farnese and Serpico? Fighting. How did he meet Isidro? Fighting. Schierke? Through fighting.
Not only that but the characters develop their relationships together through fighting side by side as comrades in arms. The action isn't something that delays the character moments. The action is the reason the character moments even happen in the first place.

Hell yeah, Rodrick! I was so happy when he wasn't just and incompetent pretty noble boy, and was a badass general. Never seen the strategy around naval battle.
Interesting thoughts, I feel like a mainly agree with what you said actually, but tone my overall enjoyment a few notches lower then yours. In my mind I didn't put most of the arcs into these bigger arcs in my head, although it does make sense. I agree completely with you on thoughts on most of the fighting, looks amazing most of the time, but fills like filler oddly.
Also damn, I'll have to read that Swords on the Hill scene again, It was very good, but I don't remember feeling like it is as godlike as you make it seem.
I also think I read it so fast that I skipped over a lot of the small dialogue of Puck and Isidro, so that's something to pay more attention to on the re-read.
Sorry if you were hoping for a bigger comment. I'll get there, just need more time to sit on it. Good video as always, however, I would of liked a few more pictures because I had to go searching for a few names and to understand what you referring to, however, this is more due to me not being well versed in Berserk lore, and me reading too fast XD
Finally, I agree that the artstyle changes were really interesting, and I like then a lot more. Though it was quite jarring/obvious. Do you know the current speculation on Miura and his thoughts on Berserk, I imagine he must be really burnt out hence the artstyle changes.

    • @KyleEntertainment
      @KyleEntertainment  4 года назад +1

The Hill of Swords Scene my first time, is something I wish I'd recorded. I beat the shit out of my desk and actively screamed, not really from the overall scene, but just the moment were you realise Griffith is already here. I literally cannot imagine and more excitable moment with me in anything ever. But Casca coming back, when those pages leaked and she was awake, that's on another level to even the Hill of Swords scene.
Obviously, the editing in the video was awful, it won't happen again next month.
Berserk gets better with re-reads definitely. I've read it 4 times now and especially the little details with the Puck and Isidro dialogue you pick up more on the second and third go round.
I don't think Muira is burnt out at all. He realises Chapter very slowly. The art changing is just because over the 30 years he's been writing Berserk, his personal style has changed. Also at some point he changed from physical to digital drawing, which lead to a change.
I'm curious about a few things like who your favourite characters were, favourite scenes, favourite moments? Least favourite characters, least favourite scenes, least favourite moments? Just curious since your someone who recently caught up and hasn't had years to marinate on everything. I actively advocated that the Black Swordsmen arc was the best arc and the Golden Age was the worst for a while, so jeez.

    • @JarkeyBacon
      @JarkeyBacon 4 года назад

@@KyleEntertainment That's amazing man! Those types of moments are so good, and I think the manga allows for this because better then anime it doesn't continue without you. I felt that way with chp359 probs my favourite Chapter atm.
Haha, the editing is no biggie, honestly. Just a little tip imo. Its you writing and thoughts are the selling point, and I'am not going anyway anytime soon. I'm easy to please lol. :) Though, I do wonder if you had really tightly edited video if it would be your break out hit. But then again your content is a little niche so I'm not sure. I'm rooting for you though!
I'll defo re-read this summer with a physical copy, and maybe even by my own (0 . 0 ').
Glad to see the Miura ain't burnt out. I heard he said that he is doing a new series to help train his assistant(s) up to par to end up helping with Berserk, which is a pretty smart move. Its insane that he did all this by himself. Like Yukimura has 3 assitents for the backgrounds. Crazy man, crazy!
Did you see my Patreon message I think those thoughts on their are a bit rawer. But here are my current thoughts:
Best Chars (in a VERY loose order):
      - Pippen lol (Literally my favourite archetype so I'm pretty biased even if he doesn't do much. Also for the memes / hot- take)
      - Guts
      - Casca (These two carry the show)
      - Schierke
      - Rodrick was such a pleasant surprise. Also Jerome was cool as well. He was like the only nice guy in the establishment which was a breath of fresh air.
      - Farnese
      - Serpico (honestly, I feel like I don't understand this guy fully at all, since his motivations are really weird, or I missed something. I like that his presence earlier on in the band. He doesn't do much near the end. However, I wonder when Farnese with find out that they are half-siblings).
      - Luca
      - Jill / Rosine (great duo)
      - The King, ohohohohoh boy. That family and ordeal was crazy.
      Favourite moments:
      - Gotta be the dream sequence and Casca coming back. The pain as Guts realises she is hurting only to hurt her even more while helping her is soooo good and I loved it. Bloody brilliant.
      - Alright, I said I am not a bit fan of the fights, but Guts taking out his sword and shutting up all the aristocrats / posh people in Farnese's fathers meeting / gathering was bad ass.
      - Guts leaning up against the tree after killing the 100 soldiers and the spark of the relationship of Guts and Casca, was great.
      - Guts and Schierke on the beach.
      - The eclipse was not fun but still great.
      - And tons of small moments that I am forgetting probably.
      - The king scene, you know the one.
      WTF moment:
      - Farnese on the sword and the horse trying to rape her???? That was errr something lol.
      - The king lol. So tragic.
      Least favourite:
      - I don't dislike anyone really. But Mozgus while having a few unique quirks is a proper eye roller. I think a lot of manga and anime have this bit tropish take on organised religion which is understandable but also really played out. FMA, AoT, tons of isakai. Like its really played out, but this maybe because of the amount of time I have spent of the internet during the rise and fall of the new atheist movement (Berserk and FMA happen before this so I'll give it a pass). Most of the time its just played as a farce and the followers are just ignorant people which is V boring. Like if you are going to take obvious christian queues (which a lot of religion in Japanese media do interestingly) please try something different, not just some obvious extreme. That's why I praise VS as much as I did for this. It tried to be unique while still being pretty neutral. I probably sound more mad then I actually am, I don't care that much but its just a bit of an eye roll.
      - Some of the rape scenes were also a bit eye rolly (think the Casca one and the other demon / aposel that I got confused with Zodd). And the over abundance of nudity ain't my cup of tea, but that more because I am a hypocritical pussy Brit that is a-ok with men looking hot af. Like Rodrick with his shirt off was a lol / dayyyyymm moment. The boy looks good. (I think also the fact that lots of them seem underage triggers warning lights in my brain).
      Biggest issue:
      - I think there is too much fighting and it becomes really repetitive and pointless feeling after a while. Golden arc was ok because it felt like it was building to stuff, but I was bored of it even in the Black Swordmen arc tbh. Like VS, to me, has few enough fights that all gave a sense of tension and lots of them feel quite different. Like the absence of fighting in early farmland, get me ampped up for when it does break out because there has been such a drought. I think it is also because it is Guts vs monster, or against foe he has not history with. Like ik Guts is going to win and I feel no tension because it doesn't feel personal. There are exceptions of course. When Guts fights Griffith in the snow, that was amazing and was great moment of tension because I was convinced Griffith would win (since we knew that he would betray Guts at some point). Lost Children arc fight against Rosine was pretty good as well. Casca against the Veykings (lol) was nice as well since it was great to see she hadn't lost her touch. And Guts vs the 100 soldiers, badass.
I think that is it. You seem really interested since you are asking quite a few questions, which is unsual for our conversations, I feel like it is normally the opposite way around XD. Nice change of pace, and I hope my response has been some what interesting. Also since you don't seem (I am probs wrong) that you care about others opinions too much so that adds to the surprise a little.
Finally, GET TO SLEEP MATE, WHY YOU COMMENTING AT LIKE 8PM BRITISH TIME, AIN'T THAT LIKE 4AM FOR YOU!!!!! Nah just kidding bro.
Finally finally, I was thinking about this a bit and I'm not toooooo sure, but I'll just put out there and you can give your honest reaction. Do you wanna do a bit of a collab? I was thinking you would do the writing and publish it on your channel and stuff but I would just do the editing and stuff. If you don't want to. Thats absolutely fine, I am a-ok. Its just I like editing and have a lot to say but I have trouble writing, which is ironic given the length of this message, and am bad at deciding what to write about. We can hash out other details later cus I don't think it is needed jump the gun since you may say no.
Have a fab day. Hope you enjoyed the essay :)
      Peace.

@@JarkeyBacon The Farnese and Serpico half sibling thing is weird. Because I thought it was going to be a big reveal for her character, but it is implied at some point that she already knows that they are related and found out a some point. That detail has always perplexed me.
The rape horse thing is a notorious meme in Berserk, you're not alone in your reaction.
As for the religion thing, it never really bothered me. I'm generally not very favourable on religion so that probably colours my view on it. There's actually an analysis video about Berserk's take on religion that you might be interested in. Just search Berserk religion and it should come up. I don't know how much I agree with it, but maybe you'll like it.
As for the rape stuff, I literally want to make a video called, 'Berserk's Problematic Relationship with Sexual Assault.' I agree completely.
My sleep schedule is completely fucked, usually 5 am to 11 am is the sleep pattern. Yikes.
As for the collab, I'm definitely down to consider it. I'm unsure how we would do this since I find scripted collab's to usually be a little hookey. But I think we could make it work depending on the topic. Otherwise, some sort of unscripted thing maybe would work better. But do you have any ideas?

    • @JarkeyBacon

@@KyleEntertainment Just watched the religion video. Aleczander's videos are generally pretty good. At least his FMA ones are. I don't care too much for his HxH ones. I enjoyed it and while is does talk about it on a whole scale, and said some things I missed, it didn't change my opinion too much on Mozgus and the holy sea in generally, probs just cause it is just to one note imo. I may have look for some other video or think about it more. I mean FMA has a similar message but Father Cornello, has little nuance and makes him a little boring. As for the idea of evil and chapter 83, I forgot to say, but that was really cool. And I think Aleczander's video cements that.
For the video, I would suggest that we could try something smaller first, and see the reaction. I was think scripted video since I feel like those are not under a time pressure as the reactions and predictions are. I don't have any ideas atm. I was more thinking that you just do something you want to do and then I edit it, but I'll think on to.

Black Swordsman should not be at least 3. Objectively, it is the worst written arc. The dialogue is cliche and bad, the art is at its worst, and Guts comes across as a generic, two dimensional edgelord character.
The Count is a solid villain, Vargas is great, and Griffith's first appearance is great. But aside from that, it's not even close to the quality of Lost Children, Conviction, or Golden Age.

    • @melancholyman369

@@megashark1013 What you said made no sense mate, How is it the worst written; it establishes the deprived state of Guts and hinting at the trauma he went through, and how is the 90's aesthetic lesser than the no modern take of current chapters? The art improves upon what was already great. The first arc is Berserk in its entirety: its gives us characters with dimensions to them, hints at intriguing relationships and a point of view of one of characters that are affected by the MC.

@@megashark1013 i mostly agree with the other arcs being better ( other than maybe fantasia) but guts was most definitely not a 1 note character in this arc , he very clearly shows a lot of emotions and conflicting ones at that which show many sides to him, we see that implicitely through puck reading his hidden emotions and outwardly like when cried after feeling for the count's girl or also when he vomitted out of disgust with what he did after he killed the little girl in the carriage with the religious old man.
of course he was less interesting of a character than later on when he develops way more, but he was like that for a good reason after what happened in the golden age which led to him closing up on himself and as a result being a much less expressive character and way less complex than later on, but he was still an interesting character and not a 1 dimensional one .
