@@yourlocalpunkposer8107 I know this probably isn't true, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised at this point. There's only so much time one can selectively put off from completing (and unarguably so) their most famous work before unfortunately becoming dull to the idea of actually "doing" the work necessary to see it ultimately finished. Likewise, there's only so many years one can stand to wait for their favorite series to (finally) update before eventually becoming gradually apathetic towards the main author themselves - even more so when there's no stated reason as to why it is exactly the author/creator behind said series has just seemingly halted all of their work.
Granted, I still love Berserk for what it is - though I'm a bit partial when it comes to Guts' earlier forays as the Black Swordsman rather than these most recent arcs. However, I refuse to hold any foolhardy (or indeed, extremely zealous) illusions that Kentaro Miura will ever bother to finish the truly unique tale of Berserk sometime within the near future (as his overall passion for the series itself has generally seemed to have dulled through the years, if his unnaturally long hiatuses are anything to go by, let alone release dates), if at all. Instead, it is far more likely that he will die before the end of Berserk can be seen, as so many others who have patiently waited for that well-desired triumphant or dark conclusion to inevitably come. Perhaps I'll be proven wrong (and hopefully so), but I sincerely doubt it.

Miura has said that he mixes and matches historical weapons, tactics, etc. to make up the world of Berserk. Some stuff is from the 1300s, some the 1500s, he goes for whats cool over what's historically accurate per se. So there is no way to "date" the world of Berserk. Still a cool video and some good stuff to think about though, great job.

We went into the dark ages because of Christianity and the church forcing everyone but themselves to be uneducated, conducting “witch hunts” to eliminate everyone knowledgeable person not directly under their control, just like a dictator eliminating citizens with brains that didn’t fully devote themselves to the state. They then preceded to keep all that knowledge to themselves and sparsely use it to ensure they stayed in power. That Catholic mindset of domination came from Rome itself (hence Roman Catholic), which was a mainstay from the Roman Imperialist mindset. The Romans were deadset on crushing all threats to their empire and massacred scholars such as the Celtic Druids in Britannia and the Jewish Rabbis. They then forced the populace - now devoid of their societal brain - to adopt the Roman standard of living and belief system. The Occitan languages as well as some remenants of Celtic used to be spoken for a long time, but due to French becoming the standard language during the last few centuries, speakers of those languages are now quite rare. Although I find the thought of the Skull knight speaking with a French accent rather amusing, you have to consider that Charlemagne lived at a time way before modern France, thus the way he spoke would be drastically different than a modern french person and so would his accent. I mean, he was king of the Franks, not king of France. Even when I look at french texts from the late medieval period (I'm french by the way) it is incredibly different from modern french, to the point that it is practically gibberish to the average french person... And Charlemagne was 800 years before that, so you can imagine how different his speech would have been!

I really have to disagree with this theory.
First, the warriors shown in Gaiseric's period are in my opinion far more similar to those of keltic and early germanic warriors. Mainly based on the weapons they are using, and those poles adorned with heads (dont remember the name of those) The fortress in the back is also much more similar to an oppidum.
But the main thing I have to disagree with the setting of Midland in the middle Francia, is because the ground zero for the explosion, which would have to be Wyndham's location, is nowhere near that location. If you draw a line between the fjords of Norway and the western cape of Asia Minor, the ground zero would be somewhere on that line. Which would put it somewhere closer to Prague, Bratislava, Vienna or even Warsaw or Krakow.
There is also the fact that we have structures from Rome and Vatican located in Wyndham, and the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is fused together with Palazzo Vecchio of Florence, one being from Spain, the other from Italy, in the palace of Vritannis.
While trying to figure out the borders of the berserk universe is really fun, I think it is contra-productive to try and force it into specific historical borders.

About what you said around 7:00 ... well, the men in the manga have carnyxes (the big boar headed trumpets) and are clearly attacking an oppidum (like Old Oswestry for example), so the action would take place somewhere between 400 BC and 0. One of them even has a villanovian helmet, which is from around 700 BC... also, some helmets seam to be Spangenhelms, which means they come from the early middle ages as you said.
Considering this, I think Miura wanted to represent the whole pre-Gaiseric world in one picture, with elements from different contexts in antiquity. The point was not to represent an accurate scene but to evoke the pre-imperial world in just one picture. Also, Gaiseric is named after Geiseric, a Vandal king who has sacked Rome in 455 AD... maybe if berserk really take place in our world, it would just be a world where the roman empire never existed.

Gaiseric seems almost like a vague "best hits" album of some specific imperial leaders over time. It could also be argued that his story alludes to Alexander the great. In fact while I can see where the helmets and armor in the one image of the past empire could be norman/frankish I feel the way in which the cuirass is build seems closer to the Linothorax armor of that period of Greek history, but also it appears to be built of individual plates like a Coat of Plate from the late crusade period of the middle ages. To be fair I don't think you are wrong necessarily on your theory. What I would posit though is that Muira made the imagery vague in terms of time period to encompass the way in which scholar attribute the retelling of mythology from ancient and early middle ages periods. By being vague it could be 500 years ago, or longer and the legends surrounding Gaiseric could be based on the kernel of truth but has had both retelling and perhaps the deeds of forgotten heroes attributed to this legend.

Kushan is way more to the east...in India. The one you call Kushan is the Ottoman Empire...and also a huge chunk of the continent to the west of the Black Sea is the territory of the three kingdoms Valahia, Transilvania and Moldova...currently known as Romania. There are lots of legends surrounding this area - a border between cultures and worlds, geographically marked by the Carpathian mountains and the Black Sea, ancient home of the Dacians.

i just saw this video, i think the whole universe in berserk is not similar to the real world empires and kingdoms because it is set on a world with same geography with us but different history and events which made such kingdoms in berserk unique on itself, comparing gazerik to charlemagne is somehow wrong i think because theres no such thing as charlemagne in the world of berserk, and we cannot put gazerik in real world because theres no such thing as gazerik in our history. there is also kushan empire which has the role as the turks but are indians and in reality exists a hundreds years ago prior to the medieval era. i think the world of berserk is like the history and events on the videogame called crusader kings where random events happen such as indians being able to invade eastern europe, or different kings other than charlemagne starting a big empire etc. it is just a different world of magic with different events of history based on the real world geography.

Kushans are definetly Indians/Hindus. And Charlemagne was not French nor German, the concept of "France" and Germany (and even concepts like "Nations") appeared way later ! Basically France, as we know it today, really appeared in the XVIII/XIXth century, a little bit later for Germany. But it is common to say that France and Germany's origins are the same : Charlemagne and his empire. So in a way, they're like two twins that never got along with each other until recently, so that is pretty cool !

Culturally the Kushan are Hindu, but there invasion of Midland is more similar to the Ottomans, so they are a mix up of both. The ancient warriors there were meant to look Celtic, indicating the ancestors of the people of midland and possibly Tudor, to have been there world's equivalent of Celtic barbarians, and Gaiseric is a germanic name, so his origins were most likely in the north of his world's Europe, with Germanic based people, he was most likely the war chief of a barbarian tribe, and conquered all in his path, and fell in love with the architecture of the subjugated Roman/Mediterranean people of this world. In my opinion, I feel like he is a blend between the historical barbarian king gaiseric, who was more a raider than a great unifier, and King Charlamagne, who of course was a unifier, and is seen as the father of Europe. I feel like Griffith would be this world's welsh, for literally no reason other than his name, which is of Welsh origin (nothing against wales, I myself am part welsh), Guts I feel is most likely central European more or less a blend of this world's equivalent of Germanic and Celtic, and just a little bit of this world's Slav, Casca I'd say is basque due to her origin in the mountains, and living near the border of two countries. I'd say that Grunbeld is probably Irish, due to his homeland being a northern country, and the only northern country within range of Tudor, which did attack his homeland, would be this world's Ireland. Not just saying that cuz he is a redhead, but because geography. I also agree with the notion that Skellig is a small island south of ireland, as it does explain perfectly why the ride from Vritannis (which has been established in the video as in Italy) to skellig toon so long. Also Wallatoria and Morgar is definitely the Polish Lithuanian commonwealth in my opinion, and Balden is the early Holy Roman Empire, and Randel is Bohemia. The Panera alliance is most likely the Italian city states.

I think the Kushan are a conglomerate empire of many different asian cultures. You can see within the manga that there seem to be different ethnicities within the Kushan army, some look like Mongols, some are Hindi but I think the ruling class is definitely Arab. I always thought Casca herself was probably from one of these ethnicities, which would make sense because there were many turkic immigrants in eastern europe at certain points. I also believe Guts himself is slavic, which would make it easier for him and Casca to have met.

I don't think it's possible to draw direct parallels to real life, we have too much contrasting information.
Take Vritannis for example: it is heavily inspired by Florence (the tower is literally palazzo vecchio, Manifico sounds a lot like Lorenzo il magnifico, and his family reminds me of the de Medici family), but it's on the seaside. Also Farnese irl is the name of a dinasty that ruled over Parma.
The kushan are indian-inspired (from the irl kushan empire), so they probably just expanded west a lot under ganishka (?) and don't represent the ottomans.
Due to name similarity and geographical/historical relevance Waratoria is probably Wallachia and Morgar Hungary (hungarian in hungarian is magyar)
Midland is France for me, and Tudor is England. It just makes too much sense.
Roderick might come from Iceland: it's an island, it's isolated from the rest of Europe and it has a history of exploration ( Leif Ericsson, discoverer of America, was from Iceland).
I don't know about the others

I would think Midland is actually Byzantium seeing as major battles of the hundred years war took place in rather arid environments. Also it would be easier for the Kushan, who seem more Indian than anything else, to invade from India. It also keeps Midland in the middle as Byzantium had a rather important and central location being the land connection between Europe and the Middle East. Let's not forget that Byzantium fell to the Ottomans which the Kushan have filled the void of. Midland lost its capital to the Kushan leaving me even more sure that Midland is dark fantasy Byzantium. Given how vaguely portrayed the other neighbouring nations are they could easily be moved around to fit into Byzantium's neighbours. One last thing is the Holy See's seemingly out of place defence of Midland. If it were just any other European counterpart I couldn't see the Holy See getting involved but if Midland is Byzantium it would make sense as it was a major religious hub for the real Holy See and it was the last capital of the Roman Empire which could be swapped out for Gaiseric's empire.
EDIT: I didn't really bring up the Holy See's involvement very well. Yall remember when the Holy See rounded up a buncho nations to repel the Kushan? Thas what I is talkin bout.
Watta yall think? Does my theory hold any water?

The Kushan Emperor has been around for centuries, and matches up with a number of historical figures. He could be Suleman, but he could also be Timur, the head of an ungodly huge Empire stretching all the way from India to encompass the entire Muslim world. Maybe it includes all the conquests of the Mongol empire as well.
I think the strong Indian flavor of the Kushan has me leaning towards Timur.

You do realise that the West as a whole is germanic? It's all about where these tribes settled and assimilated, not what they left behind. In fact there is no formal distiction between the Frank and the French. It's a stylistic sleight of hand thought up by Philip II king of the Franks, who saw the groups he ruled as a nation rather than provincials under an empire. Thus he started calling himself king of France instead. Charlemagne is simply the genesis of French identity as we know it today. The oldest recognisable ancestor: an archetype of a Germanic/Latin mixture we still recognise as French. He spoke a mixture of latin and germanic dialects that serves as the basis of modern French, and as a result we call that mixture old french. Before him we find Latin, Celt and Germanic tribes and languages in less assimilated/ recognisable states.
It doesn't mean his influence wasn't felt outside of modern France though. The eastern parts of his empire developped different cultures through further assimilation with eastern people, while his influence over chritiendom was so great that his legend merged with celtic ones to form that of Arthur over in Britain (according to Tolkien's research). This was further reinforced through the later French conquest of England, but later assimilations created the modern British identities. Great Men had influence all over. There's no reason the French and Germans can't share Charlemagne as kin. Our extended families are related.
