I’m starting my biology pgce this September! I have a degree in biomed, nhs experience and a year of preschool experience so I’ve been on a bit of a journey of self-discovery! I feel you with wanting to do medicine because back in school it was the plan but life has taken some turns and teaching seems to be the right next step! Glad I found your video! Thanks for the advice and best of luck with med! ❤️
Wow. You sound just like me. I did an undergrad in biomed, worked in the NHS for half a decade and now considering a career change in to traching, doing a Biology PGCE, in London How have you been getting on since your comment 9 months ago? Still in teaching?
this is a lovely and helpful video, thanks so much! I'm doing a secondary English PGCE this year and applied even later than you (July 😂) so am a bit nervous and stressed but am excited and ready for a big challenge👍🏾 best of luck with your career in medicine
So much respect for your determination and hard work. I think you'll really enjoy Medicine and your experience will definitely give you a lot of confidence when you start clinical attachments and are working with patients. More than happy to have a chat if you want to discuss anything about medical school/careers at that stage (medic here as well!). Really enjoy watching your videos as well. I feel both motivated and more cheerful after I've watched one of your videos - looking forward to more of your uploads!
Thank you so much for this comment🥺 i think you’re right, I’m very excited to get started with the clinical part of the course (shame it’s still a while away😅). Glad you’re enjoying the vids 💓
Great that you are pursing medicine! I’ve just done my architecture degree and pursing teaching in a 1yr pgce, I’m still not sure what to do afterwards so it’s great that you can sort of ‘go back’ to your profession!
I'm a science NQT who has just handed their notice in to go into HR management in September. I feel like training to be a teacher and completing my NQT year has really developed me as a person, but ultimately I hated the constant scrutiny, be glad you escaped lol :)
Just been accepted on PGCE - MFL teaching programme. After having worked as a EA for nearly 30 years, I can't wait to leave the humdrum of office life, where you feel like a slave, and working long hours, and dealing with people with stupidly big egos, I can say as a career changer, I can't wait.
@@Capricorn197530 That's great to hear that you're so excited and ready for change. Feel free to reply when you've finished your PGCE with an update of your enthusiasm for it- it's a crazy ride lol!
I just went back to teaching. I get more respect, they can tell I'm a teacher doing cover supervisor I think. Some schools prefer a cover supervisor to a qualified teacher. I personally would not recommend a PGCE in hindsight, I'd go for full-time in school.
Hiya! I am starting my PGCE now in September. I know the workload is heavy but did you have anytime to do things for yourself? eg- Go to the gym etc. Really nervous that it will take over my life completely haha. Just hope I can still do some things for 'me' so that I can stay relatively sane lol xx
I'm starting to believe maybe history teaching isn't what i really want to do. Which is concerning seen as I've had this planned out since I ended college (I'm now final year uni) i appreciate the video and how in depth you went with the ins and outs of pgc Cheers
@@LydiaMartinMedic Sorry to hear you didn't get what you wanted the first time round :( at least you were able to expand your horizons and you're back on track now!

I’m considering going the other way around - I went to med school but dropped out. Now that I’ve had my kids and the youngest is starting school in September, I’m considering doing pgce now. Might have left applying too late for this September though
Hey! I am from India and I have 2 years of experience teaching English and History. But i don't have a degree in English. I have done my Bachelors in Economics are commerce and Bachelors in Education. Will I be eligible for PGCE with English? I have currently applied for MA Education in Universities of UK.
What do you mean when you say you were "bullied a lot" by some classes, what did they do? Can you go in to more detail in wht you had to deal with behaviour-wise as a cover supervisor?
We’re going back 5 years ago now so hard to remember the specifics 😂 from what I remember it was mostly silly behaviour, heckling etc and as a 21 year old cover teacher I probably didn’t have the confidence / behaviour management skills to stop it
thanks would you say it’s easy to become a teacher now and would you say the wage is enough or would you have to maybe do other things on the side? ( if you don’t mind me asking how much does a teacher earn in their first year and then generally how does it go up)
I’d say the PGCE is challenging but if you can get through it then I feel like you’ll cope with teacher life! I think the first year salary after qualifying is around £26k (?) but it is always changing and I think teachers can earn over £40k after taking on extra responsibilities and training but I think it might be worth googling it for more accurate info xx

What time did you start and finish the day (officially). Were you expected to stay beyond the last lesson of the day - parents evenings, after school clubs? I’m going to have to juggle a 4-year-old too.
So from what I remember, i arrived at 8:30 (unless we had staff meetings) and I left at around 3:30-4pm most days as I preferred to plan lessons at home (I didn’t have my own classroom to sit in anyway) so most days I would leave pretty much straight after the last lesson. If we had parents evening I was expected to stay but that was maybe once or twice a term! The schools I was at did lunchtime clubs instead of after school. Hope that helps :)
@@LydiaMartinMedic Thank you for that. It sounds reasonable. Finally: Was there an expectation that you got involved with lunchtime clubs - or was that optional?

I think the actual university you choose for the PGCE is less important than for a normal degree. I chose Southampton because I was already a graduate from the uni and my partner was living there - the education school also happened to have a good reputation. My sister is training to teach this year and she's chosen the local training scheme (SCITT) which is the same qualification but they spend more time in schools rather than having a day per week at university like it did. I think just do you research but don't over think it because you wont be spending loads of time at the university anyway.

So we didn't get a "wage" but we got a bursary as an incentive to train to teach. I got £26,000 as a biologist and so did all the physics and chemistry teachers, i know maths got £28k that year but some subjects get less.. it depends on the demand for teachers in that subject the year you train... i know the bursary for biology is lower this year (maybe like £8000?) but it could easily go back up next year. The bursary was paid over 10 months in equal installments and it was also tax free :) The latest bursary amounts are on this website: getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/funding-your-training
