  • LIVE! Update as of Feb 29, 2024 - This is back! Access it by going to
    1. FamilySearch.com
    2. FamilySearch Labs (Choose "View Experiments") then
    3. ""Expand Your Search with Full Text"
Update August 5, 2023 - FamilySearch has limited this feature. Here's hoping they got what they needed from the experimental release and will release it widely soon!
FamilySearch just quietly released an experimental feature that allows you to use OCR to search keywords in unindexed Deeds and Wills. I found out about this feature less than 24-hours ago and have already struck gold!

Thanks again to Annette for alerting me of this: annettekapple....

That pull-down document read is fantastic! Wow, this will be such a game changer. Thank you for the video!

I have often wondered if FS would go back and index the unindexed. This is great!! Wills are my favorite type of collection.

Right? I work in tech as my day job and I have a feeling that AI is going to be a game changer when it comes to not just indexing, but correlating old records. While AI and large language models should NOT do things like write novels or replace customer service jobs, they are very good at slicing and dicing huge volumes of data and finding matches or similarities. I'm excited for the future!

I requested access to this test a few days ago, has this experiment access been shut down already?

Hey, yes, unfortunately, it was shut down after about a week, which is usually disappointing. However, I don’t foresee them holding it back. There were some bugs with it, and I imagine they are fixing them in order to release this to the public. I’ll update when it’s live (because I am so anxious to have it back!)

I was able to access for a short time before it no longer worked. Have to email for permission now. Sent email request but still waiting. 😢

I’m guessing it was super popular and they took it down because it wasn’t meant to be anything more than an experiment. My hope is that now that they’ve tested it they release it as a proper feature soon!

It says they are not accepting any additional users at this time. Bummer

They’re not taking new users for that tool.

Yes. I updated the description to say that a while back. They are going to reopen this much more widely in the future, they just haven’t said win. An AI person from Familysearch was on a podcast in October talking about it.

Don't try this if you are watching this as of November 29, 2023. FTM no longer is accepting new users for this beta. Maybe you should remove the video.

Hey there - if you read the description, I have said that. This is going to come back, we’re just not sure when yet, sadly. Here’s a recent podcast about how FamilySearch is using AI, but they don’t give a date: pca.st/episode/15140e9f-765b-4954-a783-cf832b033009
