Indexing is a part of the Latter Day Saints religious journey. The last time my auntie volunteered for a mission she worked one year helping to index WWII military records. She had done several other missions; one really big one was the Ellis Island project she worked over one year. She was a devote member of the faith. She was also a WWII Army Nurse RIP 💖
@@GenealogyTV Update. Using both Family Search (Research Wiki) and Ancestry (Thru Lines) with a little hint from my grandmother's family bible entry that I heretofore had not been able to decipher or understand, I was able to find my family and the exact farm they lived on in Norway :))) Thank you!
Connie, your videography is amazing. Your expertise in magnifying your images makes your videos wonderfully easy to view. And, primarily, your content is educational and very interesting. Thanks.
I started indexing after finding my first family record on Family Search. It is great practice but it's also very rewarding. It's a fantastic feeling when you read thank you messages from people who have found a family member from one of your projects. I would highly recommend it. All of these records are provided to us for free, giving back a little is the least we can do. You can pick and choose projects according to language, location and your confidence level. If you open a project that you can't manage to index you can simply put it back and choose another. Much love from Scotland. x 😊
I found the video to be most enlightening. I find Connie to be the easiest to understand of all RUclips Genealogy sights. I have used FamilySearch many times and did not know the wealth of information. I also belong to the other sights and I utilize them all.
Wow! Between the two of you ladies, my head is spinning! I never realized just how much I didn't know and why I keep getting stuck. I don't know if I will live long enough to put into practice these things that I have yet to learn! I do my Ancestry paid subscription once a year for 6 months and the other 6 months I suffer through the Ancestry being put on hold and try to be happy with Family Search. I'd rather use both simultaneously, but scheduling does not allow this to happen. I am thankful for your videos, Connie... they really help me to see that I need to be patient and find alternate ways of searching.
I recommend using one as you primary place for your tree. For me that's on Ancestry. Then use the other sites like FamilySearch for additional research of records and others trees. I only update FS for the lines I'm actively researching. It's too much to keep up with otherwise.
It might help you to go to a local Family History Center that you can find on the help section of Family Search. Many of these locations have research sources available to utilize as you are in person at the Family History Center.
This site was great for my research. My family is from Costa Rica and it is harder to find information. My 84 year old aunt was delighted to see the family tree so complete. We followed about 11 generations
At this point in my geneology journey I am interested in and can benefit the most from learning about researching records; the tools available, how to use them. Thank you so much for this information! Thank you for your experience, time, knowledge, and willingness to share. God Bless you!
Thank you very much for sharing this information. You have reminded me to do some indexing. It has been a while. I’m a big fan of sharing anything family history.
I always thought it would be better for "timelines" to import LOCAL events, instead of international events. It would be much more interesting for me to read that there was a flood or disease, or mine accident the same day that my ancestor died, than to know that ameila earhart flew someplace the day my ancestor died.
Great info. It was really cool to hear from someone from their team and to see all the demos! Thank you too LDS for this project. It helped me greatly to get my Italian citizenship

I learned a lot from this. I did find that the guest's replies were not always clear enough, or too fast, (including pointer etc speed) to make out, even with doubling back and repeating

Appreciate this video on Family Search. I hate to admit I have the most difficult time trying to figure out HOW to navigate thru FS. Familysearch is one of my favorite sources, but I think it's wrong to allow one person to alter or delete someone else's research. Ownership aside, research results and research notes are used for future investigations. It provides a means to avoid duplicating arduous research. If I need to keep duplicate records and notes to keep them in tact - well, it defeats the purpose of keeping them on familysearch.
exactly. I have had people add people to my tree and even change names dates whole nine yards. there was someone in the family that kept good records, data, she had written a bunch of books. she did a bunch of lines. she personally did interviews. I just wanted a place to move or less store my stuff in case my program goes bad on me. all kinds of things been added on. I don't want docs added on, I have those already in notebooks. I don't want people changing things. they have my free sooo messed up, they even decided my mom is dead. which is funny, I talk to her every day, she isn't dead!!!!!
I don’t like that aspect of Family Search either. It doesn’t happen to me that often because for whatever reason, my family seems to fly under the radar and I seldom find anyone who’s related to them. I was in WikiTree for a while and I never once got a hint on my family from anyone so I closed my account there. A few people have connected to my tree in Family Search. If they’ve made “corrections”, I usually don’t bother contesting them unless the corrections are egregiously wrong.
Family Search has been very helpful to me. I have found a lot of death information there that I have not found on other sites like Ancestry and Find My Past. I like, too, that they include the certificate numbers in case I want to purchase the certificates at a later date.
YES!!! I HAVE HAD THAT TOO! I LEAVE A MESSAGE ON PART OF THE EDIT PERSONAL ON THEIR SIT. I ENDED UP HAVING LIKE 5 DIFFERENT GEORGE W. BLACKS. I TOLD THEM ONE IS MY GRANDFATHER AND ONE IS MY DAD, BUT THE OTHERS ARE COUSINS.
I am a senior full time missionary in SLC Utah. We are in the training zone, where we train all the senior and church history missionaries that come to serve here. I love your site and this is great info for so many people. I learned something too. Where are you located at, and are you a certified geneologist?
Great to know. I would love to be able to contact you if I have questions. Thank you for the compliments. I’ve been researching for 40+ years, no I’m not certified but I’m an avid learner. I’m in North Carolina. If you want to reach me you can do so at genealogytv1@gmail.com.
You know, I should do a video on this one. Next to any fact, you can click the Edit button and change it. You will need to put the reason for the change in the box. It will keep a list of sources in the right side and a list of everyone who has changed it below. Because it is a collaborative tree, others can change information too. Just make sure you can show documentation or state that it is personal knowledge because you knew the person, when making changes.
great video. major problems though in finding military records for the Mexican Revolution (prior to Texas statehood) NOT Mexican War. what do we search for?
I'd like to purchase a new genealogy softwear, but don't know which one. I have 3 of them now 2 Family Tree Maker both obviously old, but I have so much data entered on the one so I purchased the 2nd years later thinking it would give some much needed improvement but no. The 3rd I don't even remember the name nor do I remember where I tossed it. Thing is the Font Size, and being visually impaired. Is there a softwear that one is able to change the font size so data entry isn't a horrific job. Thank you.
Hi I am interested in Chinese in America, not my family but Chinese in historical sense--famous Chinese persons--their entry records etc. I first started with National Archives and Records Administration(NARA)'s website, now moving on to Familysearch.org, would go to Ancestry should it be free to use. Anyway, I've been having this question ever since I searched on NARA and Familysearch: what's the relationship among NARA, Ancestry and Familysearch? A lot of images on NARA's webpages have a subtitle line--Image provided by Ancestry/Familysearch. When you go to say, Familysearch.org and look at their Passenger list series, almost all are made by NARA. I am confused. First of all, where are these records physically stored? I mean the original records on paper? Are they at NARA or are they with Ancestry/Familysearch? Why NARA had to claim Ancestry/Familysearch as image provider? Thank you!
I had a client whom I was researching his grandfather. Grandpa had 2 different families! In the summer he was a logger in WA State. In the winter he came home to Chicago. He had 3 kids with each lady, the kids were approx the same ages. "No wonder Grandma was so mad at Grandpa!".
Have you seen this video on Italian research? Get Started with Your Italian Family History Research - “footnotes” guest Margaret Fortier, CG® you can look for it in the video section on this RUclips channel.
I honestly don't know the answer to this one... however, on this page is a phone number or a chat window you can contact FamilySearch directly. I would love to know the answer if you get one. www.familysearch.org/help/
How do you upload your information from My Heritage and Ancestry because I have made a lot of my family tree on Ancestry, but am not wanting to have to input my My Heritage and Ancestry Trees to Family Search because I did not want to pay more for My Heritage and Ancestry, but do not want to lose the information. I do not know as far back on my Czechoslovakian and Polish and German and Austrian family.
Two things. One is, don't delete your trees on Ancestry or MyHeritage if you choose to stop paying for your subscription. They will remain there, if you or your family chooses to revisit those accounts. Secondly, here is a video on how to upload to FamilySearch. ruclips.net/video/sXyUvSqfy2w/видео.html
@@GenealogyTV Thanks. I uploaded my trees from My Heritage with over 1200 people in it going back to the early 1500s with the Petris in Germany, so maybe that is why I majored in Microbiology. I also uploaded my Ancestry family tree to Family Search with 420 people in it going back to Kalmar Sweden and Czechoslovakia. I uploaded my My Heritage autosomal DNA to Family Tree DNA and have taken Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me and Family Tree DNA and CriGenetics DNA tests., all with slightly different ethnicities results and uploaded my My Heritage autosomal DNA to Genome Link and it shows 90% European with traces from all over the world, since I am mostly Northern European and the Vikings settled worldwide and mixed a lot and my dad's family settled and founded the USA and a lot of the family history was kept hidden because of family feuds in Europe and the Americas. The Native American is so far back that it is in the 1700s and does not show up in DNA tests.
By watching you use familysearch.org and showing how to use it. I started use it and putting my family information. But I have a question under the name of each family member there is a code _ _ _ _ - _ _ _ I want to know if it means something or can it help me get information of one family member
Everytime a new person is added to the tree they are assigned a "code" number. Since it is a shared tree the hope is that the numbers/person/name stay the same in the various trees, so duplications are not done. If a duplicate person is found fsmily sesrch hopes the duplicates can be merged into only one person.
Here's a way of using that code in a way a lot may not be aware of.... Let's say u have a relative and u know the father and mother of say 6 children and all are on the tree and each has that unique code id number.... later on u find out your relative's spouse has died and there are actually 2 spouses because he has remarried... and what u thought were one family with 6 children, now u realize that it is one father but he has been married twice and 3 of the children are from the first wife and the last 3 are from the second wife.... what u can do is add the new spouse. .... now record the id numbers of each of the 3 children that are from the second wife.... now go and sever the relationship...it will ask for a reason... just say "wrong mother" ....now go to the second marriage with the second wife, a select "add a child" but instead of just typing the info in, u can select to add by the "id number" and now u have the child with the right mother
One of my favorite parts of Family Search is Books. Family Search had partnered with 12 library and many of those books are digitized, some are not as well. Go to search and down to books and you will see the 12 partner libraries. Just type in a surname and see what comes up. I love it.
@Daniel While FamilySearch doesn’t offer translation services, they do have a page in their wiki that links to languages and how to read common words found in foreign records. The wiki page also has links to some foreign language translation services. www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Translation_Services
I think I need a tutor to understand this site. I started a tree but cannot correct entries, finally gave up. Sent a gedcom file to FHL. I think it is there somewhere, have no idea where but it seems the data is there. I am totally confused. I have been working on genealogy for more than 30 years and really miss the films.
When your on a person's profile page in Ancestry, in the top right of the page is a wrench, pencil, and magnifying glass. In a circle to the left of these is a Family Search icon. When you click this you can link it to the person in Family Search, and by clicking again once linked, other options appear like add Family members from Family Search etc. Hopefully this helps
@@danikajayde8577 Unfortunately i do not have that icon. my version must be old. also i hesitate to upgrade because i am still waiting for someone to help me upload my DNA results from 2016
Love all this but come up against a brick wall for a member of the family. I put in the burial details I got from the churchyard,But no birth date no parents don’t no if it’s a girl or boy ,child or adult the address is the same as the other relives and surname the same Belfast Northern Ireland I don’t have any joy here where I live,If you are able to help me I would be so greatful I know you deal more with America
the problem is when one does not do their research, and there are errors, those are still shared.. so basically the tree is wrong and erroneous. This was exactly what happened to me, my ancestor was adopted so his date of birth is not available but he is connected to the person who adopted him. the genealogy line should therefore be stopped but it continues with the adopters as if he was the blood relatives. Too much errors not enough verifications.
I try to focus on doing the best I can do. Also, I write in my research notes the resolutions to the conflicts so others can find it. Hopefully that will help. Life is too short to try and fix others mistakes.
Consider sending Feedback to FamilySearch. You can do so at the bottom of the home screen there is a link for 'Feedback". I think you have to be logged in to see it.
Someone isn't supposed to be able see any living members on the tree except the person that added them. If you can see living people on your tree that you didn't add yourself, definitely send a ticket of feedback as it shouldn't be possible because of the privacy.
I really don't like family search. Everytime i go on there my stuff is changed and is usually wrong that someone else had added or changed. I have been to the center in Salt Lake City. I could stay in that place from opening until closing. They have volunteers there that are eager to help you.
As a long-time Ancestry.com user, how should I proceed to begin to use FamilySearch? Do I need to move my extensive tree to FamilySearch or can I leave it on Ancestry? If I find a record on FamilySearch, is it possible to add it to an Ancestry tree? In short, what is the best way to incorporate FamilySearch as a new tool and not duplicate work I have done previously? What I’m asking for is a “Guide for Efficiently Collaborating Between Ancestry and FamilySearch”.
Hi Marshall. Sorry for the delay. Because you had a .com in your question, the message was held for review. You can download a Gedcom file from Ancestry and then upload it to FamilySearch . This might be a little tricky, I don't recommend it right now. Since you are using Ancestry, I would use that as your primary "go to" tree and then use FamilySearch as a search tool. You should have an account in there... and then start adding a few of your ancestors... and then FS will find some of those family that are already in the collaborative tree. Once you accept one of those ancestors that are already in the world tree, all the information you added with then be connected to the world tree. At that point, you really don't need to do any more (unless you want to) you can then search through the FS tree to find missing pieces of the family tree puzzle you have on Ancestry. Make sense?

Agreed. They have vital records that no one else has... and for free!
Very informative. Thank you so much.
My pleasure Maureen
Great Viedo with loads of information. Cant wait to try out the Fan Chart. Thanks to you both
Thanks for the compliments.
The fan chart is amazing, I have already gone back 7+ generations and run out of space to fill in the names
You can shift the chart so that that seventh generation person becomes the center of the chart and then you can keep going.
I have not done much in Family Search but I may have to delve into this a bit more.
It's a good idea to use all the resources, especially when they're free like FamilySearch.
Thank you! Very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
The problem I've run into with combining trees is that there is quite alot of wrong information.
Yes... This is why I'm trying to help educate the public to be as accurate as possible.
Me too.
Yep this pushed me away from Family Search tbh. Got tired of consistantly finding incorrect information. At least in regards to my tree.
Good morning. I was wondering how to correct mistakes on my Family Tree in Family Search? Thank you so much for all your help.
Thank you
that is a good point if you never had to pay silly prices how much do you get to boost familly search
gracias por la inf!!!! me ha ayudado a entender el web ...
great video. major problems though in finding military records for the Mexican Revolution (prior to Texas statehood) NOT Mexican War. what do we search for?
Search the records for time period and place... then study the history of the area too.
@@GenealogyTV been there done that . . .
Very informative.
Thanks
This is a great video with a wealth of information. However, this one is 4 years old. Has it been updated to reflect newer information?
Yes. I’m trying to get someone at FamilySearch to help out.
thank you for this video sister. A big help :)
My pleasure 😊
I'd like to purchase a new genealogy softwear, but don't know which one. I have 3 of them now 2 Family Tree Maker both obviously old, but I have so much data entered on the one so I purchased the 2nd years later thinking it would give some much needed improvement but no. The 3rd I don't even remember the name nor do I remember where I tossed it. Thing is the Font Size, and being visually impaired. Is there a softwear that one is able to change the font size so data entry isn't a horrific job. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing!
WOW SHE HAS SOME PEOPLE I HAVE IN MY TREE!
Excellent!
Thank you! Cheers!
Oh wow! Interesting story.
Amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing! How can I share my Ancestry DNA to Family Search?
FamilySearch does not have a DNA function.
The family search center in Rockland Maine is still closed due to Covid-any idea when they may reopen?
Sorry. I don't. You might try calling them or see if they have something posted on their website.
I HAVE CLAYTONS, WILLIAMS AND GREYS ON MY TREE, TOO.
I STARTED MINE IN FAMILY SEARCH AND RECENTLY I FOUND WHERE THEY ARE ADDING MORE. BUT, IF ONE PERSON MAKES A MISTAKE, IT CHANGES ON ALL TREES ONLINE.
My grandfather was station here in Michigan at Fort Custer during WWI and WWII. How do I find the muster roll for this fort?
Have you looked on Fold3.com?
@@GenealogyTV No I have not. I never used Fold3.com before. Thanks for telling me about this.
Italian records are far from indexed and with no films my research has ended. Any thoughts?
Have you seen this video on Italian research? Get Started with Your Italian Family History Research - “footnotes” guest Margaret Fortier, CG® you can look for it in the video section on this RUclips channel.
Hello ,Could I upload my whole tree from Ancestry or Family Tree Maker straight onto Family Search or would I have to enter it all manually
I honestly don't know the answer to this one... however, on this page is a phone number or a chat window you can contact FamilySearch directly. I would love to know the answer if you get one. www.familysearch.org/help/
@@trishriederer1857 This was also my thought but I thought I would ask Thanks for the reply
I used rootsmagic and did it yesterday upload-and download in both ancestry and familysearch
You could take a picture with your phone and then print it out of your pictures folder!
True.
Love this!
Thanks!
HAVE FUN PEOPLE, I AM PAST ALL THIS!
Thanks pH Balance for answering that so well. That’s one question I missed.
I stumped the wiki trying to find the connection between Isaiah Pease and Elijah Pease & Mary Collins.
Sounds like a game show, “Stump the Wiki.”
@@GenealogyTV LOL
This is so neat
THEIR GOAL IS TO MAKE ONE BIG TREE OF FAMILY
I wrote a letter to FHL regarding a missing Italian ancestor several months ago with no response.
I think they’re closed due to Covid
One of my favorite parts of Family Search is Books. Family Search had partnered with 12 library and many of those books are digitized, some are not as well. Go to search and down to books and you will see the 12 partner libraries. Just type in a surname and see what comes up. I love it.
Great tip Thank You!
The screen inside the help center has been completely remodeled and no longer has the "Blog" link. I think it has been replaced with "Community"??
I believe you are correct.
Speaking of reading old writing, does Family Search offer translation of a foreign language?
Not that I know of, but I've emailed FamilySearch for you.
@Daniel While FamilySearch doesn’t offer translation services, they do have a page in their wiki that links to languages and how to read common words found in foreign records. The wiki page also has links to some foreign language translation services.

Alguien sabe si estos vídeos se pueden ver en Castellano gracias.
I have coaching options if you want to give that a try. Here is a link with more information. genealogytv.org/coaching-options/
Watched the video. I still do not know how to attach records from family search to my ancestry tree. Any suggestions.
@@danikajayde8577 Unfortunately i do not have that icon. my version must be old. also i hesitate to upgrade because i am still waiting for someone to help me upload my DNA results from 2016
EXACTLY, BUT IN FAMILY SEARCH YOU CAN MAKE A ALBUM FOR EACH OF THE 4 DIFFERENT NAMES
Is there a limit on how many GB of audio or video and storage we can upload?
Not that I know of. Give it a shot.
Here is how you can get set up with coaching. genealogytv.org/virtual-private-coaching/
the problem is when one does not do their research, and there are errors, those are still shared.. so basically the tree is wrong and erroneous.
Life is too short to try and fix others mistakes.
and great point about handwriting...I have to read notes from my mom to my son, because he cannot read cursive!
Yes... I think reading handwriting is going to be a lost art over time.
It's frustrating my living family members should not be on there. Who checks the privacy on this?
Make sense?
