    The good news...stereo music isn't going away.
    I've lived through mono, stereo, binaural, quadrophonic, surround, and now atmos. All were marketed as the way music would be listened to. The only one that has survived for more than 50 years as the mainstream listening for music is Stereo. I am sure Atmos will be around for a long time for movie theaters but I'm not going to invest in it for music production--been there with surround.

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  2 года назад +1

      That’s be in my opinion throughout all of this for a long time… However, you can now consume Atmos material via Apple Music on AirPod Pro, and AirPod max. I’m already consuming it on a regular basis. The guys at this studio check every mix they do on a pair of AirPod max, and say the experience is nearly identical. So 5.1 was never an easy thing to consume for the consumer, this now is. So it’s definitely here to stay, we will see if its popularity overtakes stereo, but it’s at least going to live alongside it for many many years to come.

    • @danymalsound

    • @Sleemzz
      @Sleemzz 2 года назад +1

      The most common misconception about Atmos is what the format actually is. Unlike stereo, quad, 5.1, etc, Atmos is not a speaker format. Atmos is a file format. Unlike 5.1, when you playback an Atmos mix on a stereo pair of speakers the playback system will rebalance the file to playback properly, thats the point of an object based system. The longterm goal of the format is for it to be the sole mix, one that can playback on any speaker setup from mono through massive movie theaters, and the stereo mix will just be the 2.0 fold-down.

      surround is not the same as atmos. surround is different speaker setups. atmos is a file format that can be folded down from huge speaker setups all the way down to binaural. completely different premise that literally everyone can make use of with streaming services.

    I’m 48 and for my generation there are some engineers like say Steve Albini that only record to tape using nearly all analog gear and I’m wondering if for younger engineers there will be some holdouts that instead of being analog purists will be stereo purists vs the rise of Atmos mixing. In general I’m pretty skeptical that this will really take off. If it’s still around in 5 or so years then maybe I’ll consider crossing over. So far the mixes I’ve heard sound like annoying novelties as everyone gets enamored with things flying around the room. Still seems like something more for movies than albums but we’ll see.

    • @mikej6565
      @mikej6565 Год назад +6

      The younger generations want to be entertained for the short amount of time that their attention span can tolerate, rather than have a life changing experience from a song that will one day become a timeless classic. ATMOS will remain for film but the fad will eventually pass for music as 2 speakers are enough.

In concept I’d love to write music especially for this but none of the headphones do a good job even in my car which supports it and has a bunch of speakers I find myself turning it off for nearly all the music I listen to. For those listeners that can afford to go all out, that will probably sound awesome but I don’t see more than a few audiophiles and wealthy people doing it and as a musicians and recordist it’s not currently worth investing in right now for me. I hope it works but I’m not going to invest in hope. None of musician friends that I would record are interested in it and music is my passion, not my job.

    I've mixed in 5.1 for live DVDs and short movies, and it's a blast indeed. I guess it must be even more fun in Atmos. However, they tried to sell us 5.1 surround for music 20 years ago with DVD A and SACD...and it didn't fly. I acknowledge music has changed, technology has changed and the way people consume music has changed. But who's putting a 9.4.1 system in their house just to listen to music from a center sweet spot? Or worse, from a soundbar or earbuds? That's not the way it's supposed to sound like, and I think it's a gimmick to the end user. It makes perfect sense for the movie theater experience, but Atmos in your car? C'mon...plus, to a certain degree I see it as a potential distraction from the emotion and delivery of the music to have things flying around your head, or coming from the back,, from the top or whatever. Unless you are trying to reproduce a live event, which could be a concert, like in classical music, which could be a good representation, it's of no use to me. And again, binaural is not how that is supposed to sound like. I think it will stay because huge corporations like Apple are putting loads of money into that, somehow pushing people to buy more crap, because "it's the new hot thing", not because it necessarily is a better way of listening to music.

    • @beckisagod
      @beckisagod 2 года назад

      It is of course a subjective matter of taste. I’ve found that Atmos mixes can add a whole additional emotional layer to the music instead of subtracting from the experience. As to the note on no consumer having an x.y.z speaker setup, that’s becoming a classic fallacy on the subject. Atmos is an audio format that is able to give the listener an immersive experience, the level of immersion will be dependent on the playback system. So yes, listening binaurally on headphones, from a soundbar or in a cinema will yield different levels of immersion and different experiences. But you will also get a different experience listening to a stereo mix from a bluetooth speaker, a club PA system or a 100K$ hi-fi speaker setup. Thinking of Atmos as a delivery format that simply allows for more creative possibilities and better scalability to different setups leads away from the less important “gimmicky” aspects that you’ve mentioned.

    • @jeremythornton433
      @jeremythornton433 2 года назад

      I've only experienced Atmos once at a display at my local Best Buy. It was interesting. They showed a very short movie of a jet flying over and of course the sound moved over our heads. As for music, well to me I can see it at a rave or EDM party but as far as anything else, I don;t get it. Sure, for movies I understand but I think it's a bit of a gimmick.I can't imagine listening to classical music and having the violins over my head. It'd be the same thing with rock music. Maybe I'm wrong but until I've actually heard it in a good room, I'm skeptical. I do have a pretty good stereo in my living room and 2 pairs of fairly decent speakers in my little recording studio so I think I do have a bit of an understanding.

    Really great to see you covering Atmos! I love watching people experience the format as intended with great speakers for the first time. I wrote my thesis paper for school on why Atmos will be the future of recorded music, and I was able to interview a few people who are mixing in the format at the highest level. Theres more benefits to the format than just immersive, the fact that its a mandatory -18 lufs integrated means that there can now be a standardized loudness spec opposed to the various ones set by current streaming services. Atmos is here to stay because theres no downside to the end consumer and way more benefits to artists, producers, and mixers. The only real issue at present is the high barrier to entry to build a room right.

    • @chadmcilvenna4711
      @chadmcilvenna4711 2 года назад +1

      my only concern is this... with the high entry price and with budgets shrinking for all but the biggest of commercial artists, at what point does the artist or the one footing the bill for the actual atmos mix get priced out of the process? If I have a $10k setup in my mix studio (which mine is less than that and I can bang out pro level mixes that people love) and I charge $500 per mix, there is no way that I can still charge $500 per mix when my overhead increases 50x. The point being, who will be able to afford $3-5k per song mixes? People literally scoff when you start getting over $600 unless you are a named top tier mixer and even they are not getting $3-5k per mix. it is just not realistic anytime in the near future even if it is here to stay and it won't be until the cost of entry goes WAY down. Would love to here yours and Colts thoughts on this.

    • @Sleemzz
      @Sleemzz 2 года назад +1

      @@chadmcilvenna4711 I think the workflow will end up being something like this. Most mixers will build out Atmos systems that are far less expensive than the room Sweetwater built. Between the new focals and adams both being Atmos ready in terms of mounting, there will be more and more lower cost options that will help bring down the barrier to entry. In my opinion, the reference class rooms will be built out primarily for mastering, and it will be the mastering engineer's responsibility that the Atmos mix meets all the specs, much like how it is currently for stereo. Eventually the goal is for the Atmos mix to be the only mix, with stereo mix being a fold-down of the Atmos ADM Master. It's still really early for Atmos in music, and just like when stereo was brought to market in the 50s/60s it will take a few years for it to become the mainstream.

    Love the vid!! How cool is atmos!!!!
    Quick little correction. I noticed around 4min in when talking about the bed with reverbs, the guy said the rear heights wouldn't have reverb. This is actually incorrect, the .2 (of 7.1.2) that is the bed height is seperated as stereo heights left and right, not front and back. So you could pan stuff in the bed as all height left or all height right without being able to seperate front to back unless you use objects to get them all discretely :)
    There is so much to learn in Atmos but I'm stoked more people are getting into this!!!

On a horizontal plane, we have an ear on either side of our head which makes the phantom center happen. If you were to tilt your head 90 degress, you would then hear a phantom center on a vertical plane. Other than that tidbit, this is a great video, keep it up!

    • @TheReverendSlim
      @TheReverendSlim 2 года назад

      You don't have to have an ear growing at the top of your head. Phantom imaging still works at elevation with height channels due to pinna effects. There's just localization blur that makes it less accurate than phantom imaging on the horizontal plane. It's less accurate, but not non-existent. See Elevation Perception: Phantom Images In The Vertical Hemi-sphere, Barbour. (And yes, it is a total coincidence that I just saw your comment on this video.)

    The purpose of new formats has always been to have you shell out your dough. How many format changes have we had since the 1970’s? And yet, sound-wise, the seventies are still regarded as the golden age of audio - simple stereo that sounds “thick, warm and punchy” (for the lack of more original adjectives). Save your money, inflation is here to stay.

    It's easy to think that it's manufacturers that push for a "new thing" to sell "new products"... maybe it's true, however, I still do believe it's something to stay. Once I saw that Apple was converting their whole Apple Music catalog to Dolby Atmos, but also when I saw they did include a way to support this format in the update of Logic and then we can see it's also integrated in Protools, in Cubase Pro, and more and more DAW that announce that they're now supporting Dolby Atmos, I tend to think it's gonna be THE format for the feature... even better since binaural could be used with Dolby Atmos to fake immersion when listening with just stereo speakers/headphones. Surround such 5.1 or 7.1 have been existing for decades now and a lot of DAW developers never bother to include surround mixing features on their DAW... beside Nuendo, Protools HD and few others. And yet, now we see like everyone is supporting Dolby Atmos... And somehow, it's the first time I think; damn, I would love to have a Dolby Atmos system at home to try to mix in immersion... that must be fun, but challenging, but somehow it could help to place the listener in the middle of a band on stage, even better with the AR tracking so the mix move when you turn your head. So yeah, I think it's great...

    Besides all the technical stuff I love how it's all fresh and there aren't any real rules yet (besides the technical specs of course).
    It's just a pity that having an Atmos setup in a home studio is absolutely not a viable option.
    Even if you were to use budget speakers and Logic's built-in workflow, you would still need a monitor controller and calibration system that's capable of 7.1.4 (i.e. JBL Intonato & remote). Yet alone a room that's big enough...
    And if you ever wanted to listen to any music, you'd need more expensive hardware just to be able to hook up an Apple TV via HDMI as that seems to be the only option right now.

      To your text,
      exactly. "any system with software that supports it". so in "system" equals 9.4, 7.4 or whatever surround amount-constellation as far i know and it will not work on 2.0 or 2.1 by definition. So if this is not the case and you have " just 2.0 or 2.1 " then your system is either not compatible with Atmos or you use some kind of emulation in which case i have never heard an emulation based 2.0 system, 2.1 system , soundbar system etc etc that sounds convincing yet. .
      I don`t know software that well but i follow speaker and sound production evolution for about 30+ years and feel comfortable saying that i reliably know what 2 speakers can do and one of the things they ca not do is convincing surround coverage by using 2 speakers. So what i see now is something that will not work on a typical stereo system.
      Atmos will not work to a satisfiying level on a normal stereo system, no matter what software you use and 99% of listeners have-use 2 speakers and i don`t see them moving to 7-9-10 etc speaker setups any time soon. Think of the Atmos mix as a mix in a virtual space, not related to any speaker count. You can assign any track to one of those 128 Objects and move them around to whatever position you like in that virtual space. When you print that mix, all the sound files will have this Object metadata with the panning information added to them. Any device that the mix will be played back on will translate the panning information into whatever speaker count it is using, be it a 5.1.2, 9.1.6, stereo headphones, a soundbar or a multitude of other options, so that the listener can experience the mixing engineers intentions as best as they can on their available setup. So the 14 outputs here just correspond to their monitoring setup, but that is just it - a setup to monitor the mix. You could just as well monitor that same mix on other channel count monitoring systems(including headphones).

    When money is no object. HaHa. You have to look at return of investment. You can do it for much less. I am a Sweetwater long time patron. Planned my room and did it for around $24k maybe less and am working with clients now.

    Movies in atmos I get for the surround sound experience. I don’t see the need for it with music.

    Please make more videos about Atmos! It's fascinating.

    Atmos is great for hardware vendors, Dolby and anyone else who stands to gain from the hardware purchases.
    How can Atmos be “here to stay” when the majority of listeners can’t or won’t spend the money for the ridiculous hardware requirements necessary to fall short of the promises.
    The pro mixers seem to be strong armed or afraid of missing out on potential business.

    Question. What is the basic ATMOS setup, is it 7.1.2? Or does ATMOS morph into what ever you send it to, i.e. 5.1, 2.1, or even just 2?

      Dolby recommends a 7.1.4 setup to monitor professionally when mixing in Atmos. But that is just for monitoring - you are correct in assuming that for (consumer) playback, it’ll fold up/down to pretty much whatever speaker count.

    Yes everyone- Atmos is too expensive to get into. Send me your mixes instead and I’ll make them Atmos mixes for you. 🙃

    Very cool, but so unnecessary for good music. I’ll stick to stereo mixing.
    Geez, how much would it cost just for all the monitors? A lot of $$$.
