Colt, I admire you a lot - One of the few that makes me happy to watch. I was a pro musician in the 80s, beginning of the 90s and lost the ability to play for 30+ years. Finally I decided to build my homestudio in the summer of 2021 with help from my girls (wife and my daughter), started recording in november and spend the entire 2022 after work Recording my side projects. Plan was to release it on my 60th birthday january 2023 .. unfortunately I was hit with a stroke (blood clot to my left brain) december 18th, just a few weeks before the release. I did release it later with help from friend,s but yesterday I deleted it all from all streaming services, deleted my Facebook - I had 5 albums, 1 EP and a lot of singles - The stroke changed me, depressions, ruined friendships, the whole thing suck, but here I am 5 in tre morning watching this video just to get some content in to another lousy day. Thank you ❤
Holy smokes, Colt!! Big kudos to this build out. I'm impressed. Having built TWO commercial studios, I intimately KNOW how hard it is. We used to have a saying: "The studio business is owning a hotel/restaurant with a tape machine!" I never made money, but I had a lot of fun! Congratulations. I love your channel, and I especially love your spirit. 👍💯
You are SO correct about back-story. The first "real" studio I built was in a back bedroom (10' x 11' with a small hallway to a bathroom ) This was about 1982. I was on a budget so, the acoustic treatment were EGG CRATES...nailed to the drywall with 1/2-inch tacks. I made a slide hammer with a foot long snout so I could get the tacks inside the egg crates without messing them up!! In 2010 I tore all of that out (you would have been stunned at the "things" that had made a home , no a NEST , behind all those eggcrates!!) It's the same room. A new tile floor. New electrical with isolated grounds and a ground wire for all the grounding lugs on the chassis of the rack gear that connects to a separate ground post just outside the wall that runs 12 feet into the earth!! (There is NO 60 cycle HUM..NONE) Wedge acoustic foam on the walls, Pyramid acoustic foam on the ceiling and bass trap foam on the corners and where the ceiling and walls come together. You have DARK RIVER STUDIOS. I have RATNEST STUDIO. Well done SIR!!
Read something once: the grass made greener on the other side is generally the work of a really diligent gardener. Well done Colt. You’ve been “gardening” for a long time, and your grass is getting greener!
Hey Colt the legs you used for your desk just gave me a good idea on how to build a DIY stand for my tracking console. The old stand it sits on is too high it was made for standing as a FOH or monitor engineer it wasn't the right stand but I used it in a pinch and I have been trying to figure out what would work as an alternative so thank you! I just picked up 4 of these legs and I can just drill them into the console for a nice chair height tracking console!! I use a Soundcraft MH2 which is a long 48 channel console that weighs about 350 to 400 lbs and these legs support 800 pounds so they are PERFECT! Congrats on the new studio space you deserve it. Cheers!!!
It's hard sometimes to find people who get it. I'm so thankful I found your channel. Between you, Andrew and Warren, you all have helped keep my head high and to keep pushing towards my dream studio. Thank you for being real and honest! I hope to meet you / work with you some day! Keep up the amazing work!
Just WOW! man! You've given me even MORE to aspire to (starting with the MBox STUDIO!) from all the way over here in New Zealand - Thank you so so much Colt! 😜🙏🤘
Respect Brother, we all go through adversities and people only see the finished product. Many don't understand the struggles we go through to achieve even the smallest of things, buying a home, even a microphone can be like "I FINALLY GOT THIS MIC!" but to others, its like "dude, its an ml1 slate modelling mic, its not even a u47 or u87ai" but its how we all start, by turning dreams into reality. Awesome video Colt! I watched it entirely and truly appreciate the time and effort you put into making your videos, keep up the great work with all you're doing man, greetings from Australia :)
Man, this got me emotional. Your love for music is immeasurable. The challenges you went through make me feel better about my position because I though everybody had it easy.
Totally understand the feeling for what you been through, I am in one too now. I came back to watch this episode again and again. Guess I might be ending up with a small room just this room. I came back to learn how to make a small room like this sound good and efficient. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for this video. I see you guys online and sometimes struggle with envy. I forget that, not only are you years ahead of me (said with the utmost respect), but I also don't know the behind-the-scenes finances, personal life, etc. I only see a polished, pretty video of what you want to show. So, thanks again. Congrats on all of your success!
Man I had no idea what I was even about to watch due to the title but man I am so happy for you. It's like living my dream vicariously through you. Plus, this was so fucking inspirational.
Great room. A tray under the desk for the mouse and keyboard would allow room for a midi controller on the desktop, or even better a piano keyboard tray under the desk. A midi controller is so useful for so many things (like queuing a harmony line for a vocalist, laying down keys or bass etc.).
This is so encouraging because I’m headed into the very same situation. Buying a how’s with the intent of building out a studio in it(and with a wife and four children it’s a financial headache). The difference is that I’ve spent years as a contractor so thankfully the construction/build out side will come easier for me.
Colt, your story is so beautiful and 15 years for dream come true is awesome. I myself am setting a studio in my house and i know how difficult it is sometimes to have everything we want, but the goal is important to build one.. Congratulations and wish you the best success Man. :D
Awesome 👏 👏 👏 I’m a songwriter that tried to be an engineer and realized it’s not for everyone. I used all of your tips tricks and techniques and it helped me realize that I needed to hire someone. The tips did make me better at tracking though. Super dig your channel 👍
I'm in the process of building our home in Israel, and dreaming of having my own studio. This video just gave me couple of months of sweet dreams to dream about :) Thank you !
This is by far the most enjoyable video of this genre I've ever seen. I'm a longtime music gear/tech-head with a few different versions of home studios through the years, and I love his energy and enthusiasm for his passion, because it's contagious! After owning several different keyboard workstations, I just purchased Akai's MPC Key 61 and am setting up a small space in my bedroom with Mackie 824 Monitors, along with my old reliable Roland JV-2080 & MKS-20 modules, and I am excited! As far as mic's I use an AKG 414, Neuman U-87 and Shure SM58's along with an Avalon VT-737 Tube Preamp, though the MPC Key 61 has an excellent audio interface with phantom power. I have a live room with a bunch of great gear which I won't go into, but I am kindred spirits with Colt and everyone else who has a passion for music and recording arts & sciences, thank you for this GREAT video.
Your desk design is the jewel of this studio and I am inspired to try something similar myself for a custom, yet affordable solution. Thank you for the incredible production effort on this video. Well done Sir!
hey... cant lie, I am humbled and brought to tears to see this. Congrats, you deserve this Colt. I am a mix engineer here in Iowa about to put out my first album with a band that trusted me to take care of them, to your end on there being a lot more you don't see going into a studio, I started my first band in 2011 (when i was 17) and have personally been recorded twice AND I run live sound at least 2 days a week for years... I've bled my way here, but I'd do it again in a heart beat. I use your videos a lot to teach the ppl around me how to be better artists going into studios. (frack these frequencies is GOLD for that) anyways, I've learned a lot from so many people on here, but you have a way of ensuring people like me face their own humanity in ways that are needed. You're the reason my home studio gets cleaned every day and you have set the mold for the person I am when I walk into the studio to record others. That's brought me a lot of comfort through it all. Thank you for all you do and.............. if you need an intern I will move. I'm just sayin! I might be better than this comment lets on :)
I am reminded of the first video I saw of yours when you brought in and installed the panel and sound proofing of your studio years ago. Wow, it's like an old song memory.
My goodness Colt. Your mixes are fantastic! Been a subscriber for a awhile. Just a noobie and mostly just learn what I can from whoever I can and today I spent an hour listening to your work (WOW). Also Brenna Bone is jaw dropping as well. THANK YOU
CC, great vid. I get it. Tough when you play by the rules. DIY, though, is so satisfying. It's "your" space and it'll be done correctly! Enjoy the space. Peace...
Man watching the treatment process, planning, build, and install is so satisfying.
Thank you, my friend! Appreciate you watching!
That’s how I first got into each of your channels way back when 👍🏽
@@Funkybassuk I did the same for both channels
I don't know about you guys but I personally find it hilarious when Americans say "my friend"
@@LeChapeauMusic thank you, my friend, for the comment 😜😂
This is the opposite of click bait. This is the real deal. I wish you success with going all in on such monumental level
That’s the highest of compliments! Thank you so much!
Nice !!! Congrats on "Room B" the 15 years of hard work are paying off...!!!

The key thing that stuck out to me is that you hung in there no matter what! That’s dope bro!!! Thank you for your time!
Never give up! Thank you!
To say this room looks awesome would be an understatement! Congratulations on completing a 15 year goal!
From a music producer to another, i just wanna say, congratulations on this, dude, so proud of you.

as they say: "good things take time". glad to see that you haven't given up and stuck with your dream
I love this dude. We are out here doing so many things to get to these points in our careers. I appreciate the humbleness.

Came for the panels, stayed for the table! Gotta steal some of these tricks
congrats, always remember nothing happens before it's time. continue pressing forward.
Such a good video man. The room looks incredible.
Watching how they made the treatment makes me never want to build another one. They look so good!
Thanks so much man!
All the money shots after completion were fantastic. I was really impressed by your chocolate brown couch. I think I'm getting old.
You Absolutely Deserve It. This is very inspiring for me and for probably many other producers & engineers in this community. Congratulations:)
