Business and gamedev educator rant: Unity's lost brand trust, long-term fallout, why we're still mad

  • Even after the CEO left and terms got watered down, there are still shocks to every part of the developer ecosystem that can't be backtracked so easily. The software itself is still a good match for certain scale and uses, but it faces lasting challenges in being trusted for bigger business again. I expect it will lose its footing as the common platform a majority of students or even hobbyists planned to use long-term.

I firmly believe in open source, the web is dominantly built with it and godot and others are gonna make sure that games will also be built with foss.

I think Godot is going to catch up to Unity's most important features, and be at parity pretty quickly. One of the most important advantages to open source is that the users of the software can do more than just point out pain points. They can also fix them and commit it. Of course, this is dependent on there being enough of a community behind the engine. In the case of Godot, especially now, I think it has the community.

I've been eyeing Godot for a while. Godot is already great, and it was already accelerating in development...now it's going at a breakneck pace. I've already seen pain points in the engine get fixed which weren't there for that long. This is what happens when people who use the engine develop the engine. This is the advantage of open source.

Good stuff. Myself and I'm sure a lot of others are now doing the legwork to get out of the Unity ecosystem, it might take years to fully switch over but the fallout from this has planted a lot of angry seeds...

You NEVER, EVER pull the rug from under your customers. You make the terms very clear, and if you promise to never change something, you NEVER change it. Because as soon as you change it, your product's promise collapses. And if you can't promise something with your product, what's the point of it?
