One of the best things about Magnacut's exceptional toughness is that it allows for thinner grinds. Hopefully most of the companies using it will take advantage of that, and not just slap into an existing model without changing the geometry. Great channel, appreciate your work.
That’s a good point. Take advantage of what the material offers and is capable of 👍🏻
I 100% agree
Unless greater toughness is the point of the knife to begin with.
@@NeevesKnives SOME TIME HAS PASSED. THOUGHTS ON MAGNA VS S35VN AND M390 ?
SEMPER FI
GUNNY
I'm hoping this comes out on a stretch 2xl salt
Never thought I'd know as much about knives as I do now (and I still feel like a baby next to your knowledge)...Thanks, Jerad, for sharing your knowledge with the community!
👊
I have Dane Gavriloski doing up a Magnacut mule for me. Definitely super pumped to trying it out. Thanks for your thoughts Neeves!
very informative tutorial on this steel, thank you Jerad...
I got in early on Magnacut. I picked up 3'x2.5" for $70. Which is on par for most hi end steels
Wow, Jerad, this is one of the most indepth looks I've seen yet with this steel. You put a ton of time into this and it shows! Great job! 👍 👊
🙏
The result Pete got with just the factory edge was impressive. It should only get better once he sharpens them. Although Spyderco does tend to do a decent edge, it's still a factory edge that was belt sharpened. Having it hold up that good on a factory edge impressed me.
I'm going to go watch that video now
Lately +10k subs every day it seems? Awesome and well deserved J👍💪🤩
Thanks! Want to add magnacut to my collection.
Excellent review. Helps get rid of some of the hype and look at real world use. I'm really liking the fact that Magnacut appears to respond well to stropping. I've experienced problems with some hard steels that require honing to maintain an edge. I sometimes use my knives for hours at a time and can't just whip out a sharpener to work on an edge while on site - I use stropping to get my edges through the day. This vid also highlights how the treatment of steel can make a difference - even premium steels need the right treatment to get the most out of them.
Absolutely
Especially premium steel.
With all the hype around any new steel it's hard not to form opinions on it. Glad to see you were able to keep an objective eye on it like you always do. Looking forward to it myself more on the fixed blade side but it will be interesting if it performs excellent in folders also. Long term refinement of the heat treat will hopefully also make it better as time goes bye, but it will be up to manufacturers to make that happen and get the heat treatment right in the meantime without cutting corners. Could also be the case of high HRC for folders and slightly lower for large (over 7" choppers) fixed blades as well. Thanks for the awesome vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
Yeah I'd love to see them use good quality heat treatment on this steel as it's amazing if done right, seems like Spyderco is definitely doing it right, I think tactile is as well
Nice vid jerad, good to see some more hands on thoughts with magnacut. I remember sal testing saying mules were averaging around the upper end of 62. Definitely geometry will play a part between the two knives (especially with the bte and angle differences). But I can imagine that likely the bexar is not treated as hard as the mule. I'm afraid that most companies will be trashing the HT and running magnacut on the low 60s which will really affect performance.
Yeah I guess I'm hoping they will just use the protocol that Larren gives
Your new background is looking good. Contrast is much better with the larger knife, but it’s still okay with the smaller grey knife.
Really interesting your perspective. I hope when companies start pushing production folders out in the $250 range. They don't use the name magnacut just for marketing purposes to sell subpar knives, but rather put the effort into heat treatment and design.
So true
Nice Review excited to see what goes on with it 👍🏻
Seems like really good stuff. Let's hope the makers heat treat it properly.
Jared, great video! Was wondering what was the yellowish wrapping over the tactile knife when you were sharpening on the fixed angle system?
Kapton tape
@@NeevesKnives do you use that to protect the handle from damage from the diamond stones?
Nice hearing you're happy with it! I have a couple blades coming from Bark River knives that I have pre-ordered and can't wait to get them! Now time to go watch Pete's video and listen to him. Agree with you! Lol
Oh yeah I gotta go watch that also thanks for the reminder
Cedric and Ada Pete got 750 and 800+ cuts with two factory edges. That’s really good factory edge retention, I think Pete wanted to do more but his ergonomics sucked and he put off testing his edges for another day, magnacut sounds like a winner.
I’m worried about Bark River goofing up the HT, I was disappointed in my aurora in Cru-Wear.
I’ve never seen a spyderco flipper, that’s great to know. Iooking forward for Cedric & Ada review.
Great vid!
All good to know, hope companies can keep improving as they get more experience using the steel. Also what fixed angle system is that if you don't mind me asking?
Tsprof
Any steels feel similarly glassy by comparison , What is it that gives that slick feel you think ? Going for high edge retention and stainless ?
Bang! Ok go!
Can you compare this steel and 3V or CPM Cru-wear? I'm considering Bark River Bravo 1 as a bushcraft knife but I can't decide steel.
Is magnacut steel and vanax a tool steel like K390? Great video again!
Yes they are tool steels
Love your energy
I was disappointed that the Reate EXO didn’t come in Magnacut. Elmax is a great steel tho.
Yeah I love elmax
You put a lot of work into this, thanks brother.
Thank you 🙏
The out of the box choil on that Spyderco tester sucks. Isn’t even parallel with the factory blade grind.
Great video
Informative video. You do great work. One day, I would like to buy a knife using some exotic blade material. Magnacut was one. Another material I have seen is rust proof because there is no iron in it. It's called dendritic cobalt. Terrain 365 is making knives of that material. Do you have any experience with it?
Not yet but hopefully in the near future
Knice vid my Dude😎
Sounds rather interesting let’s just see what a year brings before filling up the collection a bit ( hahaha collection more like walking mental health problem ahhh knife Therapy) it’s not that bad really.
Who said that!!🥴
Have a beautiful day brother stay safe and healthy Jerad and Kara or would you mind if i just call you JnK 😘👍🏼
Hex for fixed blades I feel like should be 59 to 60 hrc and for folders 62 hrc and up
Jerad, I'm sorry, but I seem to be unable to find the name of your guided sharpening system under sharpening supplies list. What is the system? I looks nice.
I just posted a full review check it out 👊
Thanks!!
What fixed angle system is this that you’re using. And I would assume that spyderco is heat treat is a bit better. Spyderco and they’re heat treats are almost always amazing
I did a review TSprof blitz
what the new "Super Steels" mean to me, is that really great steels like 20cv and s35vn-s45vn are now going to be CHEAPER for the knife Manufacturers to get, and that should reduce the cost of decent quality steels in our working knives.... better knives at a slightly more reasonable price is a very good thing......thots on the Manufacturers using Magnacut: if they are going to make knives with that expensive of a steel, they should do the heat treat to the VERY BEST it can possibly be done, no excuses, no exceptions, DO IT RIGHT...and to me that means 63-64 rockwell and Cryo'd....it deserves it.....OnWard.....
Tactile is 60 61 hrc and its better at 64. I think spydey knew.
Where did you get those scales?
Where can i get that sharpening tool? Awesome
Everything is linked in the description
Do you think its a good replacement for the lc200n salt series ?
I do, especially performance wise
What micron gunny juice did you use?
I have 6, 1 and .25 but I used the 6 the most
From what I've read 20cv and m390 have better edge retention. So for a folder, I think I'd prefer them over Magnacut. Right now the market is charging a "hype" fee of about 33%.
On paper yes but cut tests are showing that it's possibly better depending on what your cutting, also depending on how hard they are running the steel, in many cases m390 is ran soft so it's edge retention is nowhere near its potential. There's many spread sheets showing how bad most m390 is, some companies are doing it better than before but it's a finicky steel. I think it has the potential to outperform m390 in many ways
@@NeevesKnives The tests I've seen have shown both m390 and 20CV to be substantially better than Magnacut. I really think a year from now after the new car smell has worn off Magnacut people are going to really re-evaluate this steel for what it truly is. It's alot of hype right now.
@@dmarcellus I'm not sure what tests your looking at but there's actual controlled and scored cut tests you can go and look at right now, from multiple different peoples testing, showing m390 all over the board not consistent at all, magnacut only having a couple tests in seems to be doing very well, I have some custom magnacut coming at 64.5 hrc and I expect incredible results.but Cedric and ada tested the mule like I tested and outpost 76 did some from bgm knives and possibly some other. But check out the score sheet from blade banter, shows hrc exc.. with a lot of m390, you can watch tests from super steel Steve, outpost 76, Tom hosang outdoors, Cedric ada, exc.. theoretically m390 should get a But better edge retention but that's with a good quality heat treatment and hrc, most companies run it at 60 hrc and don't have consistent heat treatment because it's finicky
@@NeevesKnives I've seen Magnacut at 62 consistently....so the same can be said for the heat treatment on any steel, but I suspect you understand this. My point is, for $80 I can get a 20cv Delica that will perform as well, possibly better than a $300 plus magnacut folder. I dont see the value added to justify triple the price. With that said, I was all about the 4V Para 3 St Nicks knife that just dropped. Money well spent.
@@NeevesKnives Have a good week!
I want an endura or Stretch in it. Hell I’ll take a para 3 LW.
It’s been a year, thoughts Jared?
Interesting video good job.I heard
Magnacut is a little more rust
resistant,than s30v,s35v.
Do you know if anybody has tested that? Thanks
It's a lot more resistant. It's going to be in the spyderco salt lineup. Native salt at least
Yeah I've heard it's far more rust resistant than that
It seems to be far closer to LC200N in terms of rust resistance than S30v or S35vn
@@NeevesKnivesThanks Gang
How would you compare it to Elmax or Vanax ?
Different but it does take a similar edge to elmax bit feels different on the stone, I've only done vanax a few times, but I do love vanax. I think it will be more rounded than them
How does it compare to cruwear in terms of edge retention.
Depending on the heat treatment, I believe 63+ it will absolutely out perform cruwear in edge retention under 62 it's probably less
I have a BR Gunny in magnacut on pre-order hope it's everybit as good as I'm hoping.
Who was the first channel we should check out? I can’t make it out anyone know?
Cedric and ada
Magna cut? M390? Cv20? Or vanex?
Atm Magnacut and vanax but time will tell
Hey what’s up man
We're did you get the handle scales from I can't find any.
Halpern titanium will be releasing some this week. They were the oem for spyderco when spyderco had them in stock.
There is an ebay seller and etsy has a few sellers.
Muleteam scales.
Thanks Norris
I just got word they are delayed until next week.
@@NeevesKnives awesome thanks for your help.
@@norrisfong6445 thanks for the update
what sharpener is that?
Tsprof Blitz. I have the Blitz 360 and I love it.
Thanks Richard
What's the first knife below the spydreco
Tactile knifeco
It needs a flipper tab and it's perfect.
They make them in flippers or thumb stud versions, the Tactile rockwall

Nice review! Magnacut looks awesome 🧐
Well... the next time I want to whittle a hair, I know what I'm going to use! 👍
Bang
LOL I'm looking at my Elmax PM2 in full Asian Dad mode "Why you no Magnacut!?!?"
Elmax is great I loove elmax
Did anyone else try to wipe that hair off their phone screen?!?!? Hahahahaha
Bang
I liked this video just cause ya gave Cedric n Ada a shout out. Go Aussie go.
his edges makes a mirror look rough
10:15 this system is really bad moving! So the angles are not the same probably or
They are perfect, and it's super solid, that's me moving the base, which has no effect on the angle, I have a leather pad under it
@@NeevesKnives but it is moving! 🤔
❤K390
Absolutely
I'm 90% sure magnacut steel comes not heat treated, especially when bought by a bigger company. Putting the heat treat on the seller. I'd be surprised if they bought it heat treated. Well done, spiderco. And Jared, you are literally becoming a sharpening legend, sir. Thank you.
🙏
Lol whatever he already watched it 🙄
