• TOP 10 UPCOMING METROI...
One day I was looking through the analytics and there was a suggestion for content, which piqued my interest: “Roguelike vs Metroidvania”
I found the idea weird and confusing at first. I don’t think that this is getting sourced from people searching this term and not finding what they are looking for, instead, I think the algorithm is just showing me two things in a Venn diagram that are overlapping and is lacking content. How can you possibly compare two very different genres like this? We wanted to look at which genre would be victorious and not what the differences are between the two. That’s easy enough.
Rogulikes and Metroidvanias feel like two of the more popular genres at the moment right now especially in the indie scene. This could just be from my perspective. It’s possible that I can’t see the forest from the trees because both of these genres are near the top of of my personal favourites.
Having thought about the topic for long enough, I started to entertain the idea about how to even compare the two and come up with ideas about how to compare two very different things.
The first thing that came to mind would be to look at the best reviewed games of the year and give a point to whichever genre had the highest in each year. An obvious place to look would be sales, but that could be tricky with most developers keeping those numbers close to the chest unless to make a milestone announcement. The Game Awards is another place to look and try to allocate points based on winners and nominees. Then we thought we could get some real time data by polling our audience and looking at Google Trends as well. Finally, IGN constantly updates their “Top 100 Games of All Time” list and we could take a look at that list to see how many of each genre make an appearance and at what rank. These are six categories that should give us a better indication of which genre is king.
If you had to pick roguelikes or Metroidvanias, what would it be?
This is a tuff choice I love bothhh
I think bc of the larger quantity of roguelikes/lites I'll pick that even though I like metronidvanias more
idk
Both genres are amazing. Here is a video we did in December talking about how 2024 might be the best year for Metroidvanias in a while
ruclips.net/video/hMSDvOGgV94/видео.html
roguelikes. metroidvanias are boring imo
Metroidvanias a 100% , I generally find roguelikes to be boring and repetitive .
video showed up on my reccomend and surprised how little views thought there would be so much more good work
Thanks. Just posted it late last night. Feel free to share it with people you think might like it. So what genre would you pick if you had to?
I feel like this was a missed opportunity to highlight differences in gameplay and talk about the actual experiences that can be had in both genres. Or what the goals of both games are. Data is cool and should be mentioned but doesn't tell the whole story. A game getting better reviews doesn't say anything about what the game is like.
Yeah that was the actual reason that I did it this way. It was a suggested search in my analytics and the way I interpreted it when I saw it was VS. Also upon googling to see what content was already out there, I found plenty of articles that just talked about the differences. I appreciate you leaving a comment.
I guess I love MVs a little bit more since RLs can get repetitive quickly for me, but both are awesome
risk of rain 2 alone makes me choose rougelike
I play both genres, and I like Metroidvanias quite a bit more, but outside of a few select franchises, metroidvanias don't sell well and seem to be very niche.
There's dozens of high quality metroidvanias, but you only hear about Hollow Knight, Metroid, Castlevania, Ori, occasionally Blasphemous, and hopefully Prince of Persia enters that conversation because it blows them all out of the water.
If you go by the amount of Steam reviews, even some lesser known roguelikes have more reviews and probably sales than a lot of top-tier metroidvanias.
The Lost Crown was incredible. Easily the best Metroidvania in years. Pretty excited we are getting more Prince of Persia next month from Evil Empire in the form of a rogue.
I enjoyed the video and appreciate how you presented the facts, but I believe there are a couple of areas for improvement. Specifically, in the Google Trends section, it would have been better to search for games from each genre rather than just the genre itself. For instance, "roguelike" may appear more popular due to the variety of roguelike games available, while "metroidvania" may seem less popular since fewer titles are searched for directly, with "Hollow Knight" being a notable exception. Comparing specific titles like "Hades" and "Hollow Knight," which are leading games in their respective genres, would provide a more accurate comparison. Despite "Hades" including references to gods in the search, limiting the search to games should still yield meaningful results.
As for my second point, it seems to have slipped my mind.
The way you say "we " is really respectful 😊
are you recording this from the bottom of a well? :)
good video !
Yes I am! All jokes aside, are you hearing too much echo?
@@VDGMS i wouldn’t say too much, and it’s not really an echo it just sounds like reverb, i assumed you added the effect, if not, you might have a cool space for recording acoustic music! :)
Got it! Also what genre do you prefer?
Great job
This is about to blow up
That would be great. What genre do you prefer?
I 100% love Metroidvanias, Hollow Knight absolutely stole my heart for favorite game ever. Former side scroller child, Mega Man being my previous favorite game series. With that said Rougelikes get most of my time currently, Cult of the Lamb, Dead Cells, things of that nature are just so easy to pick up and go back in without skipping a beat.
Both genres are excellent. Did you see the new Prince of Persia Roguelite game from Evil Empire ( the dead cells studio for almost the past 5 years). Coming very soon. Looks amazing!
Great video!
Thanks! If you had to pick, Roguelike or Metroidvania?
@@VDGMS metroidvania
Did you play The Lost Crown yet? Incredible Metroidvania.
where r ur views 🙁
Thanks for the kind words. You are one of the views. We just posted yesterday and it's trending pretty good so far. Sharing is caring, so send it to someone who might like it if you know someone
I'm a rougelike guy
Conclusion: Roguelikes and Metroidvanias are different categories, exactly why they can't truly be compared. Roguelikes can be produced at higher scales, since the idea of a roguelike is much more elastic than that of a metroidvania. Metroidvanias win as soon as Silksong comes out.
Good summary, but I think it’s more fun to watch the video and be in suspense the whole time. lol
Oh for sure. I actually forgot that this video didn't have high amounts of comments, due to the great production. If you feel like the people might just read my comment and skip the video, I encourage you to delete it. I was kinda just summarizing it for myslef, not sure why tho...😅❤@@VDGMS
No it’s all good. It’s a good summary that doesn’t actually blatantly say the whole point of the video in one or two words. No dodging the question yourself though, What genre do you prefer?
@@VDGMS not either, actually. You see my first indie game was Stardew Valley a good while back, but recently I have been all for Hollow Knight. But basically whenever an outsider mentions Hollow Knight, he probably also mentions dead cells or celeste, both of which I've yet to try. Also hades, slay the spire... I've only played one (of the greatest) metroidvania yet, so I'm itching towards that genre. But I can't speak without having played all these great and grand games
You named a lot of good games that you have to try. It would be nice to go back in time to play some of those games for the first time. I’m not sure how it holds up, but Dead Cells is on Netflix, if you already have a subscription and Slay the Spire is on Apple Arcade and you could take it with you at all times if you have an iPhone. Might make things easier to catch up on backlog.
And guess what all or most games you mentioned here are made in Unity. That’s why Unity is still one of the best engine.
one thing that I adore in this kind of genre is people love the games and sharing their love too their builds and everything. Such things never happened with competitive games :D
pretty much dont care about quick any% speedruns since they would exploit game glitches and bugs. That's no fun lol
