The inugami stories always gave me frightening chills! I remember reading one of Glen Grant's stories about the witch burying a dog up to its neck and starving it with food just out of reach. Talk about torture and then doing something atrocious for it loyally do the witch's bidding. That one always struck me! That story still gives me chills!!
I grew up with this story! My grandpa was hanai for a while to the Kotake family and through them our family became friends with the late Bishop Hirai of the Todaiji temple in Nuʻuanu; my grandma made several beautiful kapa kuiki for Hirai Sensei. Sensei was called on a couple of times to exorcise an inugami. We used to go once in a while to the old Inari Jinja, the Inari shrine that used to be on Beretania Street sometimes because the Fox Kami can protect from the inugami.
