  • Hey there folks, and welcome back!
This has been a funny winter so far - there simply hasn't been much snow. A dusting here or there, and that's about it. Currently, in mid-February, we are bracing for the rough Feb/Mar winter storms - those are always wildcards. Will they happen this year though?? Maybe, maybe not! I'm hoping for NOT!
Weather aside, thoughts of the farm and the springtime tasks continue to occupy my mind. I have purchased a bunch of seed (which will be explored in a later video AND during my LIVE EVENT on March 1), and I have also been all around the state of NY looking for "STUFF" to fulfill some of my projects and desires for the coming year. Whether its auctions, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or word of mouth, I'm always on the lookout for a great deal on stuff I might need. In this video you will see some of my treasures from this winter so far.
In my down time, I'm working in my house this winter - primarily in my basement. I've wanted to parge the basement walls and Drylok them for many years now, and just never got around to doing it. So this winter, I'm doing it. It's a terrible job - I dislike every second of it - but the end results are worth it. Aside from that I'm continuing on with my hobbies, some painting here and there, piano, and of course trying to fit in some relaxing time wherever I can.
I hope this mid-winter update has been enjoyable for you. Stay-tuned, cuz there's lots more to come - including the LIVE seed-starting event on March 1. Check out the video for more details and I hope to see you there!
Don't forget, I have setup an email address for this channel - buyingthefarmny@gmail.com. If anyone would like to send a note, discuss a particular topic, share your stories, or to contact me for any other reason, please feel free!
Thanks for stopping by, and we'll see you on the next video!!

Definitely been a weird winter. For those of us that like snow it has been a sad winter. Neat idea with the pickup box trailer. I especially like that it is a Chevy box. 😁 The mock up of what it is suppose to look like looks great. Thanks for sharing the video - I enjoyed it!

I used to LOVE winter sports and activities - but after I hit 35 or so, I decided I didn't like the cold as much as I used to. Hahaha. Sorta rough in Upstate NY, but that's OK - plenty of other things to do. Yeah, the chevy box will be interesting. That's one of those fun projects I want to dive straight into, but I have to balance that with so much other stuff that needs to be done first!! :-)

Just don't try growing huge zucchini squash or those giant cucumbers. Both get a bit nasty once they go past their peak size. 🙃
    Kool video.

Hahaha no huge veggies, Lonnie - just standard zucchini, summer squash, etc. I don't like them when they get too filled with seeds!! :-)

@BuyingTheFarm if i lived closer I'd be over to help you raise these veggies. Even possibly suggest ones that you might not think of.
I'm going to try a couple things this spring with my micro little lot I own.
I own something like 3600 sgft lot, outta that I have a 750 sqft house and the front 1/3 of the lot is useless. So I only have a section that's about 20'x30' minus a couple small sections that's useless.
Going to try and finally get some ruhbarb going. Then a couple tomato plants along with a couple fennel bulbs.
Been debating a couple blueberry plants. Might try them out front on the bank and see what happens.

This year I'm trying Leeks. I've always loved Potato Leek Soup, so I'm going to plant some. When I moved into this house there were dozens of rhubarb plants growing wild, and they were HUGE - so I pulled them all out. It took a few years for them to fully die off. What else are you planting? I've done potatoes, tomatoes, herbs, peppers, peas/beans, squash, melons.... so much stuff. These days, at my house, I focus mainly on tomatoes, peppers, squash and herbs - the stuff I like to use daily. :-)

@BuyingTheFarm I would of paid some serious $$$ for seed off that ruhbarb.
I only knew of 2 other people that let it grow. Thinking of trying a couple hot peppers. And maybe a cucumber or 2. Think that'll be it for this year.
Don't think I'm going to real grass. The weeds would probably chock it out. If I were smart I'd have someone come in and till up the entire back yard and level it and seed what I want in grass.
Done leek rings (onion rings) a while back. They actually turned out rather good.
Back in the day my grandfather would plant about 1 1/2 acre garden. His main things were green beans, onions, corn, tomatoes, beets, and cucumbers.
1 year my grandmother tries chick peas. She decided it was to much work for such little reward.
