  • Hello everyone - WELCOME BACK to the farm, after a far-too-long delay!
    Well, first let me explain why there has been such a delay in video posts. Quite simply, without a working tractor, the farm grew over. Every bit of it - field, driveway, trails, access roads... so not a heck of a lot got done this year because of that. I puttered around a bit here and there, tending to the bees, mowing the lawn by the road frontage, but nothing that resulted in compelling videography.
    However, Throughout the last month or so, I did perform a few projects that had some interest and value in the neighborhood, and I documented them. As you'll see, I undertook a solar lighting project which added some character and charm, as well as curb appeal, to the structures by the road. While they remain in very poor shape, they look nice for at least 6-8 hours per night once the sun goes down.

    Mrzxy Solar Outdoor Sconces: amz.run/74Gz
    Brizled 12 Pack Solar Disk Lights: amz.run/74H0
    Additionally, you will see that the various brush piles around the farm have been removed! FINALLY! I found a great guy named Ken who does amazing work at very competitive rates. He is coming back in the next few weeks to take care of a few other tasks I requested. Without reliable machinery, managing this property becomes very difficult.
    That said, I did get my tractor back finally. However, almost immediately I began having problems with it - it was overheating and there was a loud metallic knocking sound. Fortunately, after another couple weeks in the shop, those ended up being minor issues that were rapidly resolved. So while the tractor is now working, the loader/backhoe is not. We will dig into that shortly.
    Anyway, please stay tuned as it turns out that more has happened in the last few weeks on the farm than over the entire summer. While we're still in very early fall (or late summer), it feels like the rush has begun to tie everything up before the eventual slide into winter. I hope we have several months left of nice weather, but we shall see.
    Don't forget, I have setup an email address for this channel - buyingthefarmny@gmail.com. If anyone would like to send a note, discuss a particular topic, share your stories, or to contact me for any other reason, please feel free!
    Thanks for stopping by, and we'll see you on the next video!!

    It's gonna be nice when the bees make enough honey that you can get a little for yourself! Well done. I used help my parent's with their 8+ hives as a boy and it's quite rewarding. .

    Your angle of ladder was highly indicative of your fear of climbing, as was your gate for ascending/descending the ladder. A person comfortable on same will go left/right foot up /down ladder, you would go left/right, left right as opposed to alternating steps. You will become more adept & comfortable with frequent usage of ladders. Trick is to not over think it.

      Hahaha you’re absolutely right, Ronald…. I’m not a fan of heights at all. The first 8 feet or so don’t bother me too much, but higher than that becomes a problem. :-)

      Hahahaha, the bees aren't that bad. I've been in front of the hive with no suit. As long as you're calm and don't make fast movements they just go about their business. However, if you get stung move away real fast, as the pheromone will attract a cloud of other bees. I'm happiest in a suit!! ;-)

      Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Yeah, I'm exploring a whole other range of solar lighting, different from what most people put in their yards. It is more expensive, but produces a far different end result. I'm really pleased with the lighting so far, and the neighbors on the street are as well. :-)

    Just a few tips with your bee keeping make sure you leave the bee's enough honey to get through the winter and also place a queen excluder between the supers that you want to harvest and the brood chamber because the queen will lay larva in amongst your honey if you don't and you don't want small pieces of bee larva mixed into your honey after you extract , thanks .

    • @BuyingTheFarm
      @BuyingTheFarm  10 месяцев назад

      Mike, GREAT advise - thank you!! I have left ALL the honey this year for them, but I fear my first year hasn't been successful. There seems to be FAR FEWER bees as we move toward winter than there was when I got them in the spring. Some may have departed? I'm not sure - this is definitely one of those activities with a learning curve! Hahaha. :-)

      @@BuyingTheFarm the queen may have died

    • @BuyingTheFarm
      @BuyingTheFarm  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I was never able to find the queen in the various inspections I performed. However, I'm brand new to this so I'm sure she was there at some point. I'm installing 2 more hives in the spring, and getting 2 more Nuc's.... so I guess I'll just wait for the spring and see what the result is. Either the bees will have survived (fingers-crossed) or not.

    Guess I gotta laugh at you and the ladder part. Of course you couldn't even get me on one now due to past issues.
    But back in my youth my grandparents had a fire on the farm and it took out the south side of the equipment bark.
    The insurance issued them enough money to cover the cost to replace it if they chose too.
    Well that ment that the barn needed to cone down all the way.
    My grandfather talked to my so called brother about helping him take it down. He declined due to the height required to take it down. He didn't even attempt to ask me. I was over one day when he was working on it. I just went to the barn where he kept the ladders (old wooden ladders older than I was for sure). Then I went and got more tools from the garage, and a bucket for nails.
    I went up on the roof and started pulling nails out of the roof.
    Then later on I was walking the beams on the side walls helping him take the siding off.
    You couldn't pay me enough to do that now.
    I have occasionally went up on the roof of my house to clean the gutter covers. Other than that I don't do much with ladders now.
    Hey on having those tree stumps ground out. If possible pull that and what soil you can out and put it where you plan to plant next year. That wood will disintegrate rather rapidly. When I had mine done it was gone within 3 yrs max.
    On a different note. Been getting calls from clinics about managing this so called diabetes. Everyone I've talked with is extremely shocked when I tell them I'm no longer on insulin. Even my pcp was shocked when I told him.
    Funny part is one of the calls was for a class on how to manage it. Told the woman I wasn't interested in the class after the fact that she mentioned that the insurance refused to pay for the class. She Said that it would be $156 hr, and that the class was 3 hrs long.
    I was like I think I need to inform her than I'm no longer on the crap.
    Sugar levels have been running normal this whole time. Actually since April it's been in range 96 or 98% of the time.
    Good to see ya back. Have mixed reviews on solar lights. I haven't had that great of luck with mine. 🚜🚜🚜

    • @daved8551
      @daved8551 Год назад

      Hey Lonnie!! Great to hear from you. Man, even in your younger days you did things with heights I never would!!!! Hahaha. And I'm glad to hear that the sugar levels are more normal - I hope they stay that way now!! Yeah I was unsure of the solar lights as well, however these were a bit expensive and had amazing reviews, so I figured it was worth a shot. They've been great so far!! 😁

    • @lstone.09
      @lstone.09 Год назад

      @daved8551 the main issue eas the solar part. It clouded over and wouldn't take a charge.
      Not sure but I wonder if something like rainX or something like that would help.
      But heck it's been over 10 yrs since I've tried any. You'd think they'd improve them since.

    • @BuyingTheFarm
      @BuyingTheFarm  Год назад

      I've always taken 500-grit sand paper, sanded it down, and gave it a few coats of clear-coat spray paint. Works like new (for about 3 years).... then I do it again. I've had to replace the batteries in some of my solar lights at my house, but for the most part I've had the same set for like 8 years and just keep renewing the solar collector's surface every few years.

    • @lstone.09
      @lstone.09 Год назад

      @BuyingTheFarm what's sad is that I have electric lights for along the walk and such. I've had them like 12 yrs. They are still in the basement in the box I brought them home in. Hmmmmmm.
      Did I ever mention that I hate yard work of any kind. Right now I'm not supposed to be crawling around on the ground doing crap like that.
      Who knows if they'll ever be put in place.

      Oh, very cool. I never made it that far up the country. I flew into Dublin and spent a month heading down south, up and around to Galway, then straight back to Dublin. I've seen numerous photos of Leitrim though, as well as Dromahair (the name always sticks out in my mind). How very cool and what a great place to live. As for me my Father was born here and I now live 2 minutes away from the original farm. Through the years we came back on summer holidays. So it seemed natural to come back.
      I was born and lived various places in the UK. Lately of Wiltshire but couldn’t bear the thought of moving back into a town and after I closed my business I packed everything up and moved here. And the rest is history.
