  • Easily the most famous song written by the team of James V Monaco and Joseph McCarthy, it was introduced in 1913 by Al Jolson in the Broadway revue, "The Honeymoon Express". He recorded the song on 4 June 1913 although the version here is his 1946 re-recording for the film, The Jolson Story.

      Where popular singing was concerned, although there was others before him popular for singing popular songs, he was the one that made the singer. performer more significant than the actual song!@@sunryse111

    I looove this song! And just for the record, he wasn't a racist at all. He even helped a lot of black people to get into the business even though the racism of that time. Unfortunately, the blackface was part of the number then, and wasn't seen as consciously as today.

      I agree, Maria. He is greatly misunderstood. His act was a product of its time and should not be judged by today's standards.

    • @thisgirlshair
      @thisgirlshair 3 года назад +7

      sunryse111 But perhaps his act should be judged by today’s standards meaning we look at it through our growing knowledge of cultural racism. Jolson may have liked and helped black people, and his act, if we look carefully, isn’t making fun of or putting down black people. But it takes and consumes “black life” in a non reciprocal way. It’s not a “relationship” or a 2 way street. And tragically it is the ONLY type of representation of black people that was acceptable and marketable in a very racist society- a representation of black life and people clearly and unmistakably made clear not to be owned or portrayed by anyone black, and one that doesn’t benefit anyone black monetarily. So “whiteness” consumes “blackness.” Today society is moving away from racism. And although Jolson is dead, the culture that was alive then is still alive and kicking now, even though it’s older. We make up the society now, and as such we have to deal with its past and current problems. So it’s not helpful to just chock this performance up to a different time.

      @@thisgirlshair A very well thought out and considerate over all perspective to all concerned, and possibly whom it might effect. every situation, and circumstance is different, and Society, and the individual is governed by those who control it, at any given time. The media plays a big part in this. Turning us of, or on to anything, at any given time. All existing evidence suggests that Minstrelsy, Sprouted, and prospered in the era of the Atlantic Slave Trade, The American Civil war, all connected with slavery. All up not considerate,and more white controlled, and bias against non whites.Within that however it was not an all against the other thing. color, culture whatever. There were decent, considerate people in the different groupings, who were about the best for all. This continued on in Entertainment,with a decent percentage just seeing the use of changing ones complexion as Entertainment, both performers white and Black, and others, and audiences as well. NOW in the year 2022 as I write this. Lets say Robbie Williams came out in BlACKFACE! Even without putting any racial aspect to it. Most would respond WHAT THE!!?? but his odd ball hair do's. his flambouyency. Ego! He is a sort of a modern Jolson, but not in Blackface! His material, and the world he is in, attitudes and all is entirely different of course to Jolson's. I don't go along with some like my self, who have a Jolson interest, want him to be better received now, and to do that illiminate the blackface. It would still not work. He represents an entire different, world and time. To the one we have been in for decades now.; A youth driven one. He was in more an adult driven one. Broadway etc etc. The Powers that control all our interests are going to do all they can to destroy any interest in somebody that represents the past like he does! Makes sense ghosts don;t buy anything! All said and done, I think the best to do is, as best as possible present him with out the Blackface, which was more his later career, and if it has to be used.Put it into an Historical context,note the show he used it in etc. Those that are not easy with it, and protest, if they have genuine reason to do so, via some personal connection, or experience, then react accordingly, and be honest and truthfull as we can about it! The real question is: Who or what would tell him NOT to? Al was a product of his time. Black and White Minstrel Shows were a popular form of entertainment 100 years ago - and offended no one. He was just part of the scene.
