I bought a few of these books in this edition. Unfortunately, I feel that these books are meant for display and not really to read. Even though they are supposed to last, I opened a few of these books to read and the spines broke and the covers started fraying and became discoloured. I had to get rid of them. Huge disappointment when you consider the price that they are. I prefer the Arcturus Classics. Beautiful covers and readable... Sad that I had to go for cheaper books over an expensive group of books that were supposed to last for a long time.

@@HopeMariah03 The library in my town has a few of these Penguin Cloth bound editions and they had to do something to prevent the books from doing this as well as breaking. They had to reinforce the binding and put some kind of plastic wrap around the cover just to protect them and to keep their designs.

I would love to start reading classic books again. I tried to read once a long time ago and it was written in an old English language. As a non-native English speaker, it was so difficult to understand so I returned it. A few months ago I started reading Little House on the Prairie bc I love the era in that time and I love it. Easy to understand without constantly flipping my dictionary and yes I still use it lol. Which ones do you think are easier to read especially for those of us whose English isn't their first language?

Just a quick note. You may need to be from the United States to enjoy Huckleberry Finn, and Mark Twain in general. The same may be said about The Scarlett Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. (I don't mean this to sound rude.) Anyway, it's been a very long time since I've read these American classics so thanks for the reminder! And two thumbs up for the Russian classics. They are worth the effort, it may sometimes seem, to get through them. I've subscribed.

God dammit. Why do I watch these videos. Now I want those penguin deluxe editions wirh their beautiful red rims. Although I got the name of the wind deluxe edition and the "red" sides were pink. And slightly scuffed at places. Same with dune. But that's I guess the perils of ordering books from Amazon. For the first law 10th anniversary edition I sent the first blade back 3 times before I got a decent copy. And when book 2 and 3 came in in a pretty bad state I was so over it I didn't bother. Kinda regret that now since it's the best thing I've read in ages. But not that it matters the covers are horribly fragile losing their color and silver lettering etc by super careful light use.
Don't ever buy any Golliantz editions people. I've never seen worse 10th anniversary editions of any books ever. The covers are very pretty but don't match. The last book is a shade lighter for some reason. They are so fragile basically anyone that orders it gets a damaged copy, that looks second hand. Best you can hope for is lightly used lol. The books are ultra barebones. Black end papers. No illustrations. It uses the English quote method (apostrophe instead of quotation marks) which is incredibly annoying, I have ADHD makes it harder to see where dialogue starts and finishes. Also makes it confusing when he writes something like 'And there stood Varus' horse, drinking from the river'
Still salty over the first law books. Considering I paid more for the blade itself (19 euro) compared to dune deluxe (15) and the second and third first law 10th books were both 15 EU.
I bought Arabian nights cantebury classic, leather bound for 14 ffs. (Although I'm still not are if I should have shelled out 15 more and gotten the barnes and nobles version because that one had absurdly pretty illustrations etc)
All of a sudden I've obsessively started collecting hard covers and leatherbounds of my favorite books, when I mainly use an ereader. (Even when reading physical books I have my ereader next to it and constantly open and close it to take highlights and annotations). The reason I'm so salty is because it all started with first law. I was so impressed by the prologue of the book thst I decided to get a nice hardcopy, it had also been ages since I had read a real physical book. So this was a great excuse. I ordered 6 books that day. And I've been ordering a few books a week since lol. But it really sucks thst the absolute worst quality book I have is the book that started it. I wish I got the regular hardcover instead of the 10th anniversary. Every popular fantasy / sci fi vook seems to have incredible deluxe and anniversary editions. Except probably the best fantasy / grim dark series written in ages.
If you've made it so far into my rant. Lemme know and I'll sent you a cookie shaped like a book.

Don Quijote definitely cracked me up. :D I had to read that in Spanish when I was learning Spanish in school. Don't remember much, though. I think the j-sound is something that doesn't really exist in English. It's like in José - the name. That weird coughing sound. The i is like in see - long ee-sound. The o is short as in cough. And the e is short but similar to the sound in tan. xD Wow, that's actually really difficult. :D
I am currently reading Brave New World and so far I am really disgusted by the racism and sexism in it. Thought about DNFing it...

Yes! I love collection videos!! It's amazing how many books you were able to talk about and still have such a concise video!
I just counted how many classics I have: 116, but that does include some duplicates. I just counted the number of physical books on my classics shelves. Although, I recently placed a book order, so there are more to come!
Some of my favorites that you have are also books you've read: The Bell Jar (my favorite book), Rebecca, Anna Karenina, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dracula, and The Catcher In The Rye. A Tale of Two Cities I don't consider a favorite but I think it's such a well constructed book! I also don't consider The Great Gatsby a favorite but I love Fitzgerald's writing and all the analysis and discussion that can come from it. Of the Austen novels I've read, Mansfield Park is my favorite and I love Fanny Price! I've read Far From The Madding Crowd and didn't hate it, but didn't love it. I DO however love the 2015 adaptation of it! I highly recommend watching it. And even though I thought the book was just good, I still want to read more work by Hardy, specifically Tess of the D'Urbervilles. I haven't read The Talented Mr. Ripley, but my favorite film is based on it, and I've been meaning to get it and read it. My favorite film a French film called Plein Soleil and is also known as Purple Noon. So, yeah, it's based on The Talented Mr. Ripley, which I actually didn't know going into watching it. I just finished reading The Haunting of Hill House a couple weeks ago, as well as finished a re-read of We Have Always Lived In The Castle! I prefer Haunting over Castle, but it made me realize how much I really like Jackson's writing, and I'm now expecting copies of The Lottery and Other Stories and The Bird's Nest in the mail soon.
A classic I recommend to you is East of Eden by John Steinbeck. It's one of my favorites!
The new Rebecca adaptation is expected to release this year. I'm pretty sure it's in post-production now and is supposed to be released on Netflix. But no release date, yet.

Collection videos are so much fun, I'm so glad you enjoyed this one! Wow, what an extensive collection, that's amazing! I'm glad we share some favourites too! It's really interesting to hear that Mansfield Park is your favourite, I've now read Sense & Sensibility meaning Mansfield Park is the only one I still need to read so I'm excited to read it soon! The reason I want to read Far From The Madding Crowd soon is so that I can watch the movie as I love Carey Mulligan! Interestingly I preferred We Have Always Lived in the Castle over Hill House, but I did really enjoy both! I'll definitely check out that Steinbeck book, thanks for the recommendation! And I'm so excited for the Rebecca adaptation so hopefully it will be out soonish (it would be a perfect late summer release)!

    • @BaileeWalsh
      @BaileeWalsh 4 года назад

@@ciarascorner I agree- Rebecca would be a perfect late summer release! And I also love Carey Mulligan; she is one of my favorite actresses! Yeah, that adaptation is stunning, in my opinion! And very well-done overall. I enjoyed _reading_ Hill House more than Castle, but I watched the adaptation of Castle from a couple years ago and I almost think I like the adaptation more than the book, and now both stories are pretty even with each other.
Well, I hope you enjoy Mansfield Park! You should do some sort of discussion or ranking video afterwards talking about all the Austen novels. Or something like that :)

Kinda surprising for me that neither the English or American booktubers can't pronouns Don Quijote. Maybe Hungarians are weird but we learn about this book and they taught us how to say it's title. :D
Anyway, it's not a big deal, I just find it funny. :)

@@ciarascorner yeah, it's the system I find weird but you can always make an effort to learn new things. I watched a few videos of yours and I can see that you are doing exactly that. I'm sure there are a lot of things you study and we don't, it's just funny sometimes to see these differences. :)

Hello! I really liked your video and your choices! I am Portuguese but I have a taste for English literature - especially Victorian - and have (almost) every book you mention in English. I still have a preference for Penguin books but in the past I mostly ended up buying those horrible wordsworth classics with awful looking covers because..mcheap! I
too am a big fan of Frankenstein but I beg to differ, that is not the most fabulous cover of The Portrait Of Dorian Gray because I happen to have it, it's a portuguese version with the beautiful Oscar Wilde on its cover hahaha! I swear it's quite the ethereal beauty! I really enjoyed your video!

I don’t know why Classics are so intimidating for people, the fact that they are classics means that society thought they were good enough to be called classics so you usually know you won’t be wasting your time. I wish I was able to get more of my friends into reading classics.
