- With Ford retiring the iconic Crown Vic, US police departments have several choices to replace the venerable police cruiser. Ford enters the market with two 2013 Police Interceptors, a sedan based on the Taurus and a utility based on the Explorer. Automotive journalist Scott Newell takes you for a test drive in both.
I'll miss that modular V8 of the Crown Vic. It was the sweetest sounding engine made.
Terry Earwood. A man who has forgotten more than I’ll ever know about driving a car. I had the privilege of working with him at Skip Barber. Can’t wait to do it again!!

Also why doesn’t ford taurus have the column shifter on civilian models to save center counsol space?
42luke roblox And The Explorer As Well
@@byronchavarria4954
I know right! My Parents had a ford escape with a column shiftier and there was good knee room! Column Shifters are also cooler!
@@42luke93 The Shifters Mean They Are Police Interceptors And There no space because that's where the police patrol lights and sirens at
Bus Tube TV
I miss when on civilian modes. Column shifters were made for split bench seating space.
Honestly when Ford Explorer got changed to a car base it should have had a column shifter like that to save space
I'm thinking about getting one of these as my next vehicle, I drive a Crown Vic P71 right now though and I will not get rid of it until I have to. It has been amazing for me. Reliable, comfortable, and nothing beats the sound of its 4.6 V8!
My local department is almost all Tauruses now, all wheel drive when your on icy roads for 5-6 months of the year is a no brainer.
I live in Cleveland and i think these new police cars are AWESOME
As noted in the video, the new Interceptor is based on the Taurus, which is not a "new" platform. Its roots are in the Volvo S60 platform which has been out for some time.

All my buddies want sports cars and I just want to Taurus SHO to hunt them down.
To scare the hell out of em
Ford would have had to redesign the Crown Vic to meet future safety and fuel standards. The company felt with such a limited market for the car, it wasn't worth the investment.
Responding to crackparty and Amar7605, we'll have to wait until many of these vehicles have been in service for a couple of years before we know about maintenance costs and durability.

They may have stop making them but they well outlast any car on the road!
Sorry folks but this new Ford crushes anything out there. No doubt the ubiquitous crown Vic is tough as hell. But comparing the CV to this new Interceptor is like comparing a 1920 model A to a 2013 Porsche 911 Turbo. I don't care if you are Mario Andredi driving the CV, this new Taurus will wipe your ass on a track or straight line or any other condition simply because bit is just that much better in every category of performance. Now that being said let's see how well they hold up long term.
That awkward moment when Evo and Subie drivers meet their even match. This new Police Interceptor is a game changer for sure. Yikes!
MegaTronn As evident on Top Gear USA, the Ecoboost AWD version of the Taurus Interceptor out-accelerates and out-brakes even the 370-hp HEMI packing Charger and the 355-hp Caprice PPV.
Even the all new 2014 Police Interceptor sedan that comes with three engine choices. The 3.5 n/a, 3.5 eco-boost and the 3.7 n/a which is the same 3.7 they use in the Mustang V6 coupe making 305 hp. I have the new 2014 all wheel drive 3.7 and it flat kills the Chargers and Capris on the track and road. I've had mine for about five months now and although I love it, it is tight inside.
Dude lol I think ima buy one for a sleeper! The 3.5L twin turbo one. Ehehehhee
Imports all dau
THE POLICE INTERCEPTOR IS ALSO USED FOR FOR CANADA 🇨🇦 AND MEXICO'S 🇲🇽 POLICE
DEPARTMENTS
The twin turbo awd is a beast! I got a unmarked interceptor and the quality of the heavy dirty brake system and suspension works like a charm.
I would think that re-designing the Vic would have been cheaper than scrapping the platform and having to design a complete new platform. I'll keep my 09 vic as long as I can. I am a vic enthusiast going from an 87 to and 03, and now my current 09. I may never own another Ford again after my Vic dies. Ford neglected the panther platform to death and there was no reason for it in my opinion. The body and powertrain had lots of room for tweaking. RIP Crown Vic.
Ok they replaycte the crown vic police car but what about the crown vic taxi is there going to be a replacement ?
R.I.P. Ford Crown Vic... "Gone but not forgotten"
So the ecoboost twin-turbo taurus SHO has 365 hp and the ecoboost twin-turbo police interceptor has 365 hp. I feel like they should of pushed out more psi for the police interceptor for more boost and more hp but oh well. I really want a SHO now.
I wish they would have given more of a review of the Explorer model. Looking to buy one. Drove one today and it’s definitely got some pick-up 😜
Living in PIttsburgh....Taurus has the edge for the new purchases about 10:1 compared to the Caprice and Charger. Saw the Caprice two days ago....funny looking, like it is squeezed between two cars. Plus it has this HUGE Bowtie badge on the back. I like the Taurus but love the Crown Vic. Saw the Vic chasing a Taurus....cop was driving it a LOT harder in the Vic to keep up with the Taurus. So it will be interesting.
1:50 what is that water
i want to see the crown vic perform on the same course
it would slide all over the place without all wheel drive
@@JD1-k7w I wanna see that
How about the gas tank placement? Is it in front of the rear axle?
I have seen MANY new charger police cars, a few Ford Police Interceptor utilities and ZERO Tauruses or Caprices in my area
Why not just put a V8 in there? The twin turbo 6 gets V8 mpg anyways. Is the twin turbo 6 suppose to be for weight reduction or something?
+Dean M its just the way Ford is going, theyre going all smaller turbo engines, look at the new f150, like a 2.7L engine.... I drink coffee in a bigger cup then that engine lol
i want good old caprice 9c1 back :C
Given how some police officers drive, the AWD systems will be so screwed up that the maintainance costs will increase.
So 8 years later, what are the reviews ok app of this? How reliable is this vehicle? A local dealer is selling a 2013 model and I'd like it but it'll just be a daily for me, with some long hauls back home. How does it handle in snow? Is it reliable? Fast?
I just bought one from a police auction. It’s a good car
The Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility Will Still Live On
Do all the 2013 Ford Taurus 3.5L's have EcoBoost twin-turbo? Was trying to stay away from the ecoboost

Good production value The voice over guy needs a little work on tempo inserts are good . please remember that this is a information track and not a commercial. More one to one is needed. It will help your sales cause.
Scott, I have looked at Taurus police interceptor sales and they are embarrasingly low compared to the Crown Vic. Police officers I have spoke with say that Taurus is too small for their equipment and comfort. Many departments r going to the ChevyTahoe. The old saying if it aint broke dont fix it applies. Ford dominated the police market for many years but not now. Jamey
police interceptor
AWD Charger won't come in police package until at least 2014 model year.
Ford Fusion Is The Police Responder Sedan Hybrid Police Interceptor Also The Police Interceptor Utility Has Hybrid. In 2020 Also Police Responder F150
Due to the lack of space in the Taurus Interceptor many police agencies are using it, as unmarked vehicles...
Can you remove the column mounted shifter and reinstall a new center console
Yes you can.
You can also take it to a dealer or a shop to equip it atleast you can here.
Column Mounted Shifters Are Import For Police Cars Because Of Space And Also It’s Better They Drive Automatic Transmissions Than Shitty Manual Transmissions Unlike The UK
I bet there are some cops that are still using the crown vics til their crown Vics get damaged or until they retire or until there's another crown Vic generation all the way in the future... If they're gonna make one. It's 2015 and I still see Ford Crown Victorias being used in service for police and taxis.
First time seeing the 2013 Taurus was late 2012 and the Explorer was around 2011. The first 2010 Ford Taurus I saw on the road was around summer 2009.
my department still has the vic, we have over 170 CVPIs. We are in the process of replacing them with the taurus when either they get damaged, unacceptably high engine mileage, or just start breaking down. We currently have about a quarter of the fleet replaced.
Good to see. They've been using the vics since 1998. Almost 20 years!
Joel T135 EAS RSMV, actually they've been using them since the mid eighties
Our department has both in the fleet. When given the choice, it is easy to see who likes the Taurus and who likes the Crown Vic. Short officers love the Taurus and all us tall guys are going to stay in the Crown Vic as long as they hold together.
Hrhodes I've had 2 CVPI's and I'm currently in an Explorer PI. I actually really liked the CV even though I'm shorter. The acceleration, stiffer handling, inclement weather traction, turning radius and storage compartments for the miscellaneous junk is better in the Explorer and Taurus (my partner has the Taurus PI). However, I much prefer the ride and the sheer driving dynamics of the rear wheel drive CVPI. The turn in on the Explorer is too sharp for my driving style (hard last second braking) and the torque steer during acceleration is too distracting. Everything is already starting to squeak and rattle everywhere in the Explorer also because of how stiff the ride is - trade off for better handling I guess. In some ways I miss my CV's but I feel the Explorer is more modernized.
what happened to the 4.6 v8? they kinda need something better than a v6 to catch badass mustangs and shit, i guess its just better for us (:
Ehhhh, what happened to the 4.6L V8 Crown Vic? You go from that to 3.5L V6???
Dude??? It's a Twin Turbo. It makes way more power.
Electro Cadillac v6 has more hp..and the tubro destroyed it
I drive a cvpi to be fair the taurus non turbo puts out just as much or more hp and better in the corners for chases so for the police it is probably a better suited vehicle
The Nassau County Police Departments Uses Ford Crown Vic And Ford Police Interceptor Utility No Interceptor Sedans And The New York State Police Doesn’t Even Use The 2020 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid Vehicles At All And It Has 10 Speed Automatic Transmission
The Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility Will Have A Hybrid Engine And Also Ford Is Introducing The Fusion Police Responder Hybrid Sedan For 2020 And 2021 Now After 2022 The Fords Only Police Interceptor Is The Explorer Interceptor Utility Hybrid
The Taraus police interceptor may offer all these new advances over the Vics. In speaking to several police officers their main complaint with the Taurus is lack of room. That is the number one complaint. They dont want these cars. The sales stats must have been disappointing to Ford especially looking at the police market. I live in Alabama which has been dominated by the Crown Vic with state trooper and local police departments and I rarely see a Taurus in service mostly see Tahoes now. I still see a lot of remaining Crown Vics in service and am told departments are trying to keep them on the streets as long as they remain servicable. The Tahoe seems to be the vehicle replacing the Vics not the Taurus. If it aint broke dont fix it.
Great video
Ok, it's less reliable and costs more in maintenance? Where's your proof at?
I live there too. One of my friends from the police department said the new Taurus Police Interceptors are here. they are checking each one for defects.
most cities near me are going with the caprice and the chargers...
Say what you want about Ford as a company as a whole, they for sure make the best police cars.
it seems the Explorer police interceptor is out selling the Taurus interceptor 2 to 1. Adding up both does not come close to the 42,000 units (Crown Vics) sold in 2011-12 the final year of production. Ford had to produce 2 vehicles to compete with its Crown Vic and still has not come close to CV production numbers. Ford said it would be too costly to update the CV and with sales of GM, Towncar and CV down could not see continuing production . Police are squeezing as much life as possible out of their existing CVs. The Taurus may be better in some ways but over all s it?
Just speculating here, but knowing Ford was cutting Crown Vic production probably prompted a last-year buying spree for departments that already had the equipment that fits on that vehicle. Saves money for those cities/counties/states. Also, there are more choices for police vehicles now (Dodge, Chevy). For police departments in snowy parts of the country, the winter weather advantages of the all-wheel-drive vehicles are much appreciated by officers. Ask a few how they liked the Crown Vic in the snow. I agree the room in the Taurus (and the Charger) is not loved by all. Ford knew that going in which is one of the reasons they included the Explorer in their police package offering.
Now The 2020 Explorer Police Interceptors Are Actually Better Than The 2015 And 2016 Models Because Of Hybrid Engines For Pursuits
The funny thing is, 10+ years later after 2013 most law enforcement departments have discontinued using the Ford Taurus interceptor. Citing that the Taurus doesnt hold up strong engine wise & the Taurus is hell of costly to Fix since the Taurus is mostly a computer base system car. The ford explorers police interceptors dont have alot of long life either in police usage. The Crown Vic have been used even after teen years after the Vics were discontinued. Active Police cars dont last long now days.
no...they did not ditch it because it was a bad car...they ditched ALL sedans, the motor companies want to force SUVs and Crossovers down our throats.
whats the huge ass fault with the parking lot?
RCMP are getting those!! Yes yes yes!! :D
Naturally aspirated means it has no super or turbo charger. Aspiration in humans involves the lungs breathing in which means they are talking about the air intake which is what both turbo and superchargers use. So naturally aspirated is the correct term and has always been.
This car, including the Ford police SUV are great for Forza 7 Motorsport police package. Hope that happens very soon.
Those cars are badass
Better Than UK And Australia Police Car Performances
charger comes in AWD
Sure it handles better and is faster than the crown vic, but I don't see how that improves police work. They will be more expensive to fix, won't last nearly as long, and just more stuff to break. Plus the mileage isn't any better. I don't see them fairing up to the job.
crown vic will be missed
2016-2019 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility Has A Different Interior And 2020 Different Too
Dodge also offers an AWD police vehicle. Where in the hell did this guy get his information?
Ford makes best police cars in the world especially Crown Vic best interceptor ever made excellent car plenty power and room
Luckily here in SoCal the la county sheriffs still use many crown Vics even with new Tahoe and Explorers being added
Yes some law enforcements across the country still use a few crown Vic’s but their slowly disappearing
It is the I X Center.
BusterBunker yep
fords always dominating that others learn and follow, now dodge offer an AWD package for the lower option chargers, weirdly though not for the V8 versions.
Why the heck did Ford kill the Vic. The Vic is a proven platform...all Ford had to do was to put the updated mustang engine in it and update the electronics and trim. I will always love my Crown Vic...to hell with the new crap! Long live the VIC!!!
Better than the dodge challenger in my opinion. Also looks better.
I would agree with you if all the redesigned cars were bought by police but since the public is also buying the cars (in a different trim) then it just doesnt make financial sense for Ford to redesign the Vic. I doubt the public will want a redesigned Vic were as with the new Taurus, they can make money from both public and law enforcement.
All Ford Taurus Needs A Column Mounted Shifter Because The Wipers Is On The Left
i want the crown vic back ;(
I see more new chargers in houston, texas. No taurus down here, the way it looks i think police will choose more chargers than taurus
Give me back my crown vic. This Taurus is the most uncomfortable patrol vehicle that I have ever been assigned. The doors don't open wide enough for a grown up to get in and out of it. Roof is too low - tall people suffer. If you let the seat back far enough to gain enough leg room you better have hands that hang to your knees or you won't be able to reach the steering wheel. If you are able to finally get inside this vehicle, you find bad blind spots and over all piss poor visibility. The interior lacks space for radar unit, spot lights, radios, computers, etc. I am over 6 ft. tall and have found that the only way to get out of this vehicle is to tilt the steering wheel all the way up and push the steering column all the way in and to duck my head severely to the side (which is uncomfortable when wearing body armor), and to make sure that I have the door pushed open as far as possible. Try to do all that in a hurry.... These cars run good and handle fine, but lack functionality for patrol work.
Interceptor Utility (Exploirer) Is Better Its the Same Size As A Regular Explorer Good For Tall People
The non-turbo is available in the bullet proof 3.7l version. Avoid the 3.5l at all costs!
Please explain, is the 3.5 a problematic engine ?
Oh, it will be huge. Look up on google maintenance costs on the charger compared to the crown vic and I'd bet money the charger is even a tougher car than this taurus. Police may be happy with performance but durability, space, and cost will be a huge issue compared to the crown victoria. Even after 2004 when they changed some parts of the underneath of the corwn vic to aluminum to save weight, they really destroyed the quality of the car. Ford is making some terrible moves right now.
and when ya go to change the water pump on this one... good luck...
Not any more the Dodge Charger and Durango is gonna come with there new smart AWD system where you save on gas. (during 2014) plus charger is cheeper to buy.
HIMI2003 Mopar 💯🇺🇸
Twin turbos are Twin problems. AWD systems will also cause trouble. Wait till they get 150K miles on them like our deputies rack up pretty quick in our county. The drivetrain repair costs will break the bank. Robbers will be put out of work without a shot fired. OH....and you can disregard the Ford mileage estimates on fuel. They aren't even CLOSE in the 2013 up Ford V6 trucks we have at work. Our Ram Magnum V8 pickups got better MPG's. And Ford can't explain why a V6 F150 gets 13.5 average MPG when driven 50/50 city highway. The sticker says 17/23.
Now Thatz A Review!!
Is this car just made for police?
No, they have civilian trim levels for both models (Taurus and Explorer)
the interceptor looks like a private security or rent a cop car lol
Not seeing many of these around, I think ford has kicked themselves out of the police market. My department is pretty much going to Chevy and with the exception of the Tahoes none of them have the room inside of the crown vic.
naturally asperated is the correct term. if it's naturally asperated, it doesn't have a super charger or a turbo charger. its breathing normal. look it up my friend.
the hell with the new interceptor the vic was the best cop car ever. the corwn was 2000 dollars more than the dodge charge but still ford sold more of them then dodge charger and the Chevrolet cars and they sold so many crowns because police departments knew what they were getting when they bought a crown. I would take a crown over any other police car hands down. cause I know how they are built how they handle and how they ride. ford made a big mistake and they will regret it down the road.
got too say it... the seats suck for helping with our duty belts... very uncomfortable...
Ford Police Interceptor Sedan 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇲🇽 Ford Police Interceptor Utility 🇺🇸🇨🇦 🇧🇸
Chargers are abosolutly amazing cars. But shouldn't be a police vehicle. Don't get me wrong I personally want a charger way bad! But just shouldn't they need a lot more service the crown Vic's for oil change brakes and transmissions... Crown Vic's dominates any police vehicle out there... Sorry I love the new utility tho! Nice big and fast looking!!
cant wait till these will be for sale!!!
All Ford Explorers Need A Column Mounted Shifter
Lol and this is why Ford owns 70% of the law enforcement vehicle market. Go Ford!
You are very very wrong. When these new Ford's drive behind you all you see is the wicked LED headlights that are very intimidating at night.
1:06 ... brandnew car and it is already rusting.. lol our 04 honda is just now starting to rust... 10 years of canadian whether later..
They shouldnt of got rid of the crown vic
crown vic kept the ford company from going under .they going make the same mistake like G.M. when they stop making 96chev 9C1.they both best cars made .Cop just wanted more power under the hood.plus they could add all wheel too.
its funny they talk about the pricing police departments pay for these vehicles, when they should be saying how much the tax payers are paying for them. tax payers are paying for ford to develop cars that are better in many ways than half the ones we 'civilians' drive
I own my own SHO and the police give me thumbs up......
I actually prefer rear-wheel drive... =/
The Crown Victoria has better handling, better durability, and has better designs then the crap new ford cop cars
Agreed only advantage the taurus has is better performance and mileage they should have kept the crown vic in production and replace the 4.6 with the 5.0 coyote V-8 cheaper and faster.
700Apache The Interceptor Utility Better
right!!!
Oh no...they're getting faster each year :P
They'll catch us all!
I NEEEEDDD ONE NOW!!!!
