Again.. Basilio is NOT a priest for christ's sake.

This opera is based on a play by Beaumarchais, who was a Frenchman who supported Voltaire. Thus it is extremely likely that a priest is depicted in a negative light. Also consider that "Cherubino" actually means "Cherub" and that a Cherub is a kind of angel.

@@clivegoodman16- there is NO priest ANYWHERE, neither in a play, nor the libretto. No musicologist knows where this stupidity came from, somebody must have made some mistake quite a long time ago. Cherubino is just a lover, he has no link to the church what so ever.

@@Legolasicek . If you go to Google Translate and put in "cherub" you will get "chérubin" in French and "cherubino" in Italian. (The reason I mentioned French, is because Beaumarchais who wrote the original play wrote called this character "Chérubin"). Thus "Cherubino" does mean "cherub". Beaumarchais who wrote the original play was a follower of Voltaire and thus anti religious. His ancestors were French Protestants who converted to Catholicism because Protestants on France were no longer tolerated.
Another attack on the Church is in the play but not in the opera. When Figaro finds out that he is the illegitimate son of Marceline and Dr. Bartholo (this is how these characters are called in the original), he discovered his name was originally "Emanuel". This was too much for the librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, who was a baptised Jew originally called "Emanuele" that he changed the name.
This calling an illegitimate boy "Emanuel" could be seen as a comment on the Christian doctrine of the virgin birth, as the Gospel according to St. Matthew quotes a verse in the book of Isaiah to justify this doctrine and this verse mentions the birth of a boy called Emanuel.

@@clivegoodman16 yes, thank you for the detailed comment on Cherubino, but the absurdity of making Basilio a priest still remains unexplained. It's not a part of anything. That point about Emanuel is interesting! In the opera he's originally "Rafaello", that's also a nice and pious name, although "EManuello" could have been probably more clearly anticlerical..
