  • 🔥 My new song: koji.to/iamlxgend
    I was inspired by Matti Haapoja's "I don't want to be a RUclipsr" video to make this: • I don't want to be a Y...
    I just feel as if there is more for me to accomplish than just be someone reviewing plugins, programs, and products and going through these motions. While I will indeed continue to take part in all of these things, in the back of my mind I know I am meant to BE MORE and DO MORE. Being a music producer, artist, and a musician is what I've known before any of this and although I am eternally grateful for the growth I've seen in my life because of this platform, I have also seen how it can be a vortex that sucks you in and before you know it you're so far off the original path than you originally intended. I want to make music and I want to tell stories in the creation of that music. You can get so caught up in the tutorials every day or reviewing services and products that by the time you remember to make a song for yourself, you realize you haven't made anything in months. So I don't know what my path is going to look like going forward as I have no plan and I haven't thought any of this through to be honest. I do know I am going to continue to upload videos but those videos may start to look a bit different than what you're used to as I figure out how to best serve my own creative endeavors while cultivating a great community for you all to stay inspired, continue to learn, and grow with me.

    To be clear: I'm not going anywhere. I'll still be uploading but the type of content or how it is presented may change. I need to make more music! I may even start doing more live-streamed studio sessions. We shall see. Thank y'all for rocking with me!

    I’m so happy someone is finally talking about this, becoming a RUclipsr because of the goal of building a fan base is dangerous because you might loose the focus, I think make music videos for an extended period of time, the value proposition will be the most important for RUclips so the typical entertainment or educational content within the music video

      Creating the song and/or music video will be the priority and the teaching of what comes of that shall come second. So long I've been doing it the other way around and it's left me with more unfinished songs than I have hairs on my head lol.

    I’m so glad you did share your thoughts on this because the message is very necessary and you’re definitely not alone. For me, I find creating content or staying current on platforms to be a buzz kill to my overall creativity musically because of all the time it takes to do it. I just want to make music period. Good luck on your journey, I know you’ll figure it out 💜

      This is me, 100% lately. The time it takes to plan and set up shots and all just messes with my actual music creation. I end up too tired to do anything by the time I’m finished! Have to turn this train around

    Hey man! I really enjoyed this video because as a new songwriter (started at the beginning of this year), I struggled with deciding whether or not I wanted to make social media content in parallel with my learning and ultimately decided to spend 100% on my craft rather than splitting my time. And this video reminded me that I made the right decision... focus on my craft.
    One suggestion I have is maybe you can start a weekly series where you make 1 song and incorporate a new technique or approach with each song / video. Prioritize the music creation / songwriting each week. What I've noticed with a lot of RUclips songwriting tutorials is that it's missing a lot of nuance and practical application to a song / context.
    For example, maybe one week you can focus on "tension and release" or if you want to even get more specific, utilizing chord tones and non chord tones in the topline melody to manipulate tension and release.
    Another example, experimenting with different approaches when you feel like you're coming up with the same melodies or rhythms.
    If you get really specific with the technique each week (and the specificity is where I think the value comes from), you could have a reallllly long pipeline of video ideas. Plus I'm sure as you get started with this series, you'll come up with fun, and fresh new ideas along the way (like a twist on "My Twitter Followers Wrote My Song" or something).
    This is my content plan once I've upskilled but I don't mind sharing cause you seem like a good guy hahah
    Anyways, good luck brother! Love the authenticity and keep going cause we ain't done yet! 💪

      Well that's sort of what I've been doing for the past few years but even so the content takes so much energy to make. Creating music while creating a video without a team can be quite a task. But I see what you mean and will implement it in some sort of way I see fit. Thank you for the encouraging words and the inspiration.

    I resonate with this. I'm fairly early on in my RUclips journey and I've been trying to discover how I want to utilize my channel. It's led to me moving away from making videos about music business and tech and more to making music, and trying to tell stories. I think there's been this shift in RUclips music community where the audience has been itching for something new and I'm trying to figure out what it is everyone is looking for by figuring out what content excites me the most. It's the most unfun place to be because it's a lot of trying things and failing. But overall, I'm just glad I'm trying to do it the way I want rather than what everyone else (including me) has been doing. I hope the journey is fulfilling for you too!

    I saw your video on RUclips looking for tutorials on iPad garage band and immediately followed you on spotify. I had to do a bit of work to find it on your description though and then started looking for other vids. I love the attitude. I’d just watch a montage of the creative thought that goes into making your next song, with a link to listen to the final on Spotify at the end.

  • @AlexaDigitalMedia

    Yep, this is my situation and I recently came to the same conclusion. While I haven’t taken RUclips all that seriously, it was something I started to focus on with a couple a channels related to music video, music licensing and stock footage.
    My main goal for decades has been to make music people would love. But I’ve continually missed out on solid opportunities in other areas, like performing, producing, engineering, songwriting and composing for media. Something was always missing because I would lose control of my art to someone else. So, like you said, I figured RUclips could be a way to get exposure for what I wanted to do and make some extra $$ at the same time.
    But as time moves forward and I start really researching what is necessary to be successful here, I’ve realized this is more of a pain and distraction from my true goal.
    I’m lucky to have a job that pays me very well. So rather than constantly looking for more affiliate marketing deals or start tutorials and reviews LIKE EVERYONE UNDER THE SUN, I’m going to just work on my own music and create videos to showcase my work. I’ve been doing videos for other musicians, stock footage companies and music licensing companies, but now I think it’s just going to be my own stuff and screw the money. If people really like it, I’ll figure out if I want to monetize it later. But what I REALLY want is for my work to be appreciated.

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  10 месяцев назад

      Its a tough spot to be in because on one end it can truly be the way you build an audience around your music but on the other because it takes so much energy, focus and time it can be sort of a vortex you get yourself caught in. I can resonate with what you said about missing out on opportunities. I haven't done much performing and that's been something I've been wanting to do more of and get comfortable with but just so preoccupied with the channel and making content for the sake of growth I've sort of gone along a different path. Not necessarily a bad one but it's definitely taken away from the music I make.

    @frownie 10 месяцев назад

    Just wanna say best of luck! Pursuing artistry can be incredibly difficult. Although more and more avenues of monetization have sprouted in the last 10 years there's also downsides that arises as we as creators may end up spreading ourselves thin trying to placate to algorithms and growth metrics rather than focusing on our own understanding of growth as artists. So, with all that, I hope you find your way.

    I completely agree with you. The quote "stars aren't born, they're made" came to my mind. Which means big corps put them where they are.
    Bc yes, the legend is that Justin Bieber was found by someone on social media who then lifted him out of the home made social media music makers and then he became a "name". But it's not that simply yt made him famous. And who knows if it's true at all, maybe someone took his music to a music label that would have never found him on yt, but it sounds better as a legend the other way around. We can't know.
    I know many musicians who keep doing their own music and music videos, they're pretty good, yet still they're are nowhere really.
    I'm an independent filmmaker and it's my experience that as long as we tried to sell our movies ourselves (so that we don't have to half the income with a distributor) , our films were nowhere. We made the compromise to get a contract with a distributor and all of a sudden our movies got on Netflix and tv channels and we earned more money. I believe music is the same. If you want to play it big you need something bigger than you to manage your music: a music label, a manager, etc.
    I wish you lots of luck, bc I remember when I first heard a snippet of your music in one of your videos I thought wow, "what is he doing here? He sounds just like the top of this genre" You're very talented, I hope you'll find your ppl! (Not youtube viewers but music industry professionals)❤

      This put a lot of things into perspective and has given me even more to think about. Thank you for the insight and I agree. Most of what we see came through a big machine and that’s not to say I don’t think it’s possible to grow without one but the level at which you can grow certainly feels limited. Have to push for what’s beyond! Just unsure what direction that may be for me.

    I recently commented on one of your tiktoks on my content account (I've been subbed for a long time here on my personal account). It seemed like this was a long time coming. I kinda saw the look in your eyes, and to be honest I'm here for it. You've helped me and many others with music and entertainment for years. Those who genuinely support and fw you are really gonna love and support the evolution while being happy for you. I as a newer creator tend to see these thoughts and reflect very frequently. I think change is good, it after all is the inevitable. It is dope when I have your songs stuck in my head for a week from a tutorial though lol.

      It's kind of crazy how it came across even without my saying anything and it goes to show that people will and can notice these things no matter how much you try and hide it or try to make it work. I still have yet to figure out what the next step entails I just know a new step needs to be taken. I appreciate you for being one of the real ones who shows support me in this time of change, growth, and evolution, especially as I figure it out. It may be a little messy but effective in the long run, I pray.

    This is where I an stuck as someone just starting out. I have so much hesitation with these platforms needing an angle to be relevant. I just want to make my music and create my art but I also need to earn money and that is where I get stuck. How do I put myself out there with content when it is so contrary to my somewhat introverted self that just loves creating and wants others to hear those creations in a way that they are beneficial and uplifting? Creating content for these platforms takes so much time and energy

    I think a big reason we get caught in these situations is because of the stranglehold corporations have on visibility, which forces us to have to play the game. It's like, if you don't play the way they want, you risk your art forever existing in obscurity.
