ECTOPIC HEART BEATS - COULD THEY BE DAMAGING MY HEART?

  • Can ectopic heart beats, PVCs and PACS damage the heart?
    Today I wanted to do a video to hopefully reassure patients why ectopic beats do not cause damage to the heart.
    The heart is a pump and its role is to get oxygen rich blood to our organs. To function most effectively as a pump the heart has to beat at a certain optimal rate and in a regular rhythm. If the heart goes too slow or too fast it becomes less efficient and less effective. If it beats irregularly it beats less effectively. It therefore is reasonable to say that any heart rhythm disturbance makes the heart beat less effectively but only for the duration of the heart rhythm disturbance. So when we get an extra beat, what is happening is this:
    Now as you can see it is not that there is no blood coming out of the heart during the extra beat. It is just that there is less blood coming out of the heart at that time but the next beat that comes along a little later and is felt as thud, more than compensates and essentially terminates that very transient period of inefficiency.
    For damage to occur, there has to be a sustained lack of blood going around the body which would then mean that the cells within our organs would starve of oxygen and eventually die. In ectopics beats by definition are non-sustained. The period of inefficiency is so transient that it is simply not long enough to cause harm. The minute you get the thud, you know that the period of inefficiency is over.
    Let me demonstrate this by using an analogy.
    Imagine someone compressing my neck. Sure it feels uncomfortable but it is not dangerous, unless I compress the neck for a sustained period of time. If I compress the neck for less than a second and let go then it is highly unlikely that I will cause the person to die of suffocation. I could compress the neck as many times as I wish but I will not suffocate the patient unless I keep compressing for a sustained amount of time.
    Ectopic heart beats by definition are non-sustained beats and therefore there is not going to be a period of sustained inefficiency and this is why they absolutely do not damage the heart.

      Been taking CoQ10 for close to 30 years. Last year all of a sudden my BP went to 90/40, I was in heart failure, and I needed my aortic valve replaced. In replacing it my surgeon found a 5mm hole in a leaflet of my aortic valve. I also had a bicuspid valve instead of a tricuspid valve. Although I went through a catheterization and a TEE the cardiologists did not find the 5mm hole that was in my leaflet of the valve. I recovered, but still wonder if CoQ10 helped me all through the years of having a hole in my heart.

    God bless this man! I'm 61 at present and became aware of a fluttering sensation in my chest in 2021. I already had a Kardia device and it showed my heart was not in normal sinus rhythm, but nothing specific. So, I subscribed to the premium version and it told me they were PAC/PVCs. Needless to say I was extremely alarmed because my history with my Dad is Afib and ultimately a pace maker. He lived to be 91! I went to my cardiologist and they ran a holter for 24 hours and I had a about 3,000 ectopics out of roughly 100,000 beats. That is about 3%. My Doc said that unless the ectopic burden gets up to around more than 20% they don't even "get interested." He even said that an echo was optional at that point. Needeless to say I was relieved, but that nagging worry persisted as the fluttering continued. Some days I would just sit most of the day frozen in fear. I happened upon Dr Gupta who has honestly changed my life with his reassurances. I still have them and a few really give a kick, but I just carry on with Dr Gupta's words echoing in my head. I can successfully ignore most of them now.

      I am 67 and was recently diagnosed with afib; my "ecotopic beats" are constant - I feel no discomfort from them, save for the knowledge that I have them. I had an echo showing NO abnormalities with my heart. I am a life-long athlete - runner for 47 years - I stopped this with the advent of afib, but continue to walk 10 miles/day. I am heartened to hear that you have been living with afib for 45 years; I have curtailed my physical activities (rowing, elliptical, running, etc) because of the CONDITION - not due to any discomfort that I have. I have a consult with Dr. Gupta on March 3, so hopefully I will get positive feedback that will allow me to resume my normally VERY ACTIVE lifestyle. Been to the ER 6 times in the last two months for chest pain, numbness, etc. have had countless EKGs, blood work and x-rays. Finally, an answer for what I’ve been feeling! Usually happens when I’m falling asleep, or just fell asleep. I was concerned my pacemaker or even more importantly my defibrillator had gone off. This definitely eases my mind. Thanks again for all you do! 🙏👍

    My scariest experience with ectopics is when I have several in a row. Currently I am dealing with a cold or flu and my ectopics are happening very frequently. In the past 10 months I have had ECGs, 24 hr monitor, stress test and an echo. Every test came out normal but strangely it has done little to calm my anxiety about them. My biggest fear is that I will go into cardiac arrest.

    • @CoreyLad-yf7tq
      @CoreyLad-yf7tq 3 месяца назад

      I have them all the time there so scary I tried magnesium but didn't notice any difference but here is what I took and it helped so much try taking 1 vitamin d3 3000Iu and 1 vitamin b12 1000mcg take 1 of each once a day see if you notice any difference make sure you get the liquid capsule vitamin d3

    • @CanadianWoman_
      @CanadianWoman_ 3 месяца назад

      @@CoreyLad-yf7tq yes and the scariest was when they wouldn’t stop for 2 hours straight. As if a fish is flipping in the chest. Paramedics saw pvcs on monitors and rushed to hosp. But cardiologists there were like it’s okay, they’re benign. I don’t even know!

    • @CoreyLad-yf7tq

      @@CanadianWoman_ same I have been to hospital over 50 times and called ambulance 6 times over them I've had them for 4 years now and I also get the fluttering ones they are so terrifying I get them in the centre of the chest and also the left side of my chest under my nipple when I had a ECG at the hospital they also said I was having pvcs to but said my heart was fine they have almost ruined my life I tried the magnesium but it seemed to either not help or even make them worse but 1 week ago I started taking liquid capsule vitamin d3 and vitamin b12 and amazingly it has helped so will you try taking both of them together 1 of each every day and see how you feel because if it has helped me it will certainly help you
