  • Launching a kayak can be complicated. When you factor in fishing gear, accessories and equipment, a kayak becomes a very heavy and awkward object. Simply sliding a kayak to the water may not be the best course of action for all types of kayaks either.
    In this video we showcase what it's like to launch a kayak WITH Boonedox Groovy Landing Gear, versus without.
    My buddy Paul has an Old Town Predator MX and will be showing us a no-wheels option for launching.
    I have my Hobie Pro Angler 12 with wheels installed.
    You'll notice that one way is definitely faster, but both work well.
    Here is my Boonedox Landing Gear Install: • Boonedox Groovy Landin...

      How do you get them up when in the water.. buoyancy puts upward tension and I have found it almost impossible to get sidekicks off when it's in the water without wading into the water or simply removing them at the shore before launching but those concrete ramps without wheels lol ..ouch

  • @AM-we6en
    @AM-we6en 4 года назад +2

    Cool video. I like unloading my slayer with a boonedox rudder from the bed of my truck. The landing gear makes it Super easy to get in and out of the truck. But reaching back to get the legs out is tougher than I thought. Shame on me for not doing my homework before I bought it but it wasn’t planned at the time of purchase. I thought the legs would rotate up and down by some kind of release button but I was wrong. It’s especially annoying when there isn’t a dock but Maybe I’m doing it wrong. Overall it’s convenient. In my opinion not as functional as I would of liked.

    I really appreciate you making these videos. Especially the assembly video you did. The boondox instructions are an insult.
    I have to say that after a few days of having this landing gear, I actually returned it. I feel like I’m the odd man out, but for the price it’s incredibly clumsy. I notice that you tend to leave the gears down in the water. I fish a lot of areas in the northeast that get really shallow and then deep again. Leaving them down is not an option while in the water. Reaching around and pulling the wheel arms out and lifting them is an absolute nightmare. I expected an easy auto level system for $300. They also only work well if you’re pulling your boat off a truck bed and onto the ground. If you pull your boat off a vehicle roof, I find it’s much easier to simply keep a cart.
    Anyway, thanks for all your videos. I hope I’m not the only one who finds this system overhyped and cumbersome.

    My first time out w/ my kayak after fixing her up, I dragged her w/o rope over about 100 ft of hot blacktop before making it to the beach... had no idea i was taking in water until after I was leaving and started dragging her back to my truck and was leaving a large trail of water! i could have sunk! LOL. I would not recommend ever dragging on hot blacktop... ;o) I have wheels that fit into the scupper holes now but that are such a PITA to get in and out by myself I'm considering alternatives... the Boonedox is perfect but not paying $300 for it when my kayak was under $200... ;o) Definitely going to modify what I have into something like the Boonedox setup. Do actually leave the wheels down in the water? I would have a mess of plants and weeds in those dragging me down constantly... Thanks for the video...

    Wait but you never put up your wheels you let them hang.
    Wont that create more drag?
    while moving. I have the wheel setup on my kayak.
    I hate taking them off and on in the water because the wheels have air in them.
    So it fights me to come off.
    i need solid wheels no air will be easier.
    THANKS FOR SHARING.

    • @aaanglers
      @aaanglers  4 года назад +1

      It does create drag, but with the air filled wheels, it also creates buoyancy. I realized after install that I had overtightened the nuts on the Knuckle attachments, and this was causing some of my problems with pulling the wheels out or putting them in. Now I have upgraded to the HD hardware and NON-air filled wheels, so taking them in and out is actually EASY! I'd recommend messaging them and switching up the hardware and wheels for sure.

    • @Austin_Torres

      Burly Fishing oh wow you know what I never thought of that it creates more buoyancy. Your right. When I last was on mine I forgot I left the wheels down and I’m using a minn Kota 55 lbs trust. @@aaanglers I don't know about the less maintenance comment. I would personally have to say that I do more maintenance and modding to address bad engineering on kayaks than I ever had to on a boat. Particularly with the rudder and steering cords/cables and controls and pedal drive systems. There always seems to be some Achilles Heel to all systems. I've had prop drives and fin drives, and had to routinely work on all of them to keep them in working shape. That's why there are so many aftermarket products on the market...they address flaws that come up after the original designs have been time tested on the water....flaws that either cost downtime or that someone later came up with a better design. The Boonedox landing gear is a solution to the problem all kayaks have...you either have to have help carrying them to and from the water, painstakingly drag them, or roll them with something. The strap down carts like the CTUG were a decent concept but a PITA to get a heavy kayak centered on the pads and secured. The kickstand on it is useless...it flops over all the time. I used mine twice and immediately ordered a Boonedox landing gear. The Boonedox addresses certain things but overall...it adds about as many other problems as the ones it addresses. The main two being what most of us were searching for when we found this video. How to deploy the wheels an easier way when at the waters edge and then putting them back up while taking the kayak out. I have been putting mine partially in the water, with the nose of the kayak in the water and the back toward me. I then lift the side of the kayak up to take weight off one side of the wheel...then take the pin out and flip the wheel arm up...replace the pin. I then go to the other side and do the same thing but I have to admit...it puts A LOT of stress on the attachment point of the wheel arm that is still down. Then when taking out of the water, I just do it in reverse. This has already caused my gear track rails to bend upward....so I was looking for maybe an easier solution or method.
