13:50 that was beautiful! No wonder he has so much passion for teaching. That's a great reason to do it, that's thinking beyond you and for humanity, trying to make better artists is improving art itself on a very trascendental way.
The best examples of painting a glass is to look at the Dutch painters. They are sublime in their delicate touches you truly believe you can pick up the glass in thd paintings or nibble on the fruit. Extraordinary
Stefan, I appreciate all the time and effect that you put into recording these presentations. I have a goal of viewing ALL of the videos ;that you have produced. I have viewed hours and hours over the past few months. I have many more to go. I appreciate all what you say - I appreciate that you say it over and over. Your truths are so important. I can watch anyone put paint on the canvas. You explain why you put paint on the canvas. You do so much with your classes and phone coaching. You inspire so many who view your videos. I may never pull my paints out of retirement, but if I do it will partly be because of you and what you say. Keep doing what you do, it is great. Oh, yes, all your words and 12 principals will help with painting, but that information helps me now with my photography. If I can concentrate on those principal points on composing an image to photograph, the photograph will be so much stronger. Thanks
I want to say thank you so much for your videos. I am “binge watching” because they are so very much what I need. It gives me something valuable to listen to while I draw and paint. I have mostly worked with graphite sketches and dabbled in watercolor. The last few months I have done more attempts at painting because I also photographed birds a lot this year too. I had been desperately wanting to get better with color in my work. Graphite sketches of colorful birds weren’t cutting it for me. Lol. Graphite is where I work the best I suppose, but I am determined to do better with paint. I felt like I was missing some major keys. Regardless of the medium, I think your videos translate across many art mediums. I have spent the last few years casually watching a lot of art videos on RUclips. I have learned a lot from where I started. However, I felt like there are things I desperately want to learn in my art, but no clue how to make it happen. Things I want to depict and feel inept in doing so. You said many things I know will help tremendously. You are different in your teaching. You are teaching the “meat” of what I so much wanted to know. It’s is going to take me some serious time to absorb your videos and learn. I began a journal to take notes on them. The fact that you have this out here on RUclips is a great blessing to me, and no doubt others. I had to say thank you!!!!
Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad that you like my video. YOu might want to see about my coaching program if you can I would love to have you as a student
started to paint with oil on canvas in 2011. so far I created more than 700 paintings. about 300 of those found new owners already. greetings from Berlin. and dear Mr. Stefan Baumann: originally I come from the black forest in the south of Germany. I think this is close to where your mother comes from ...
As a professional tennis coach you hit the nail on the head its the being stuck that i find the toughest part break thru comes at different times for us all Now back to my drawing thanks p.s. i so look forward to your next video
Love this one! The 1st 5 minutes really hit home for me and rest is icing on the cake. Making time for the practice is so importance and nothing is precious except the act of practice. If a masterpiece comes out of your practice, it's worth all the bad ones.
This last series of Stefan's commitment homework has really gotten me to get my butt in gear, just the whole concept of being ok with tossing them in the trash is SO hard to work through. Luckily Michaels started offering bulk cheap canvases.. so I ordered 40 and am making myself finish them all by the end of July in no more than 3 sessions each (block-in, refine, detail) 10 down already and 2 on the easel (compared to 4 last year). It's been amazing and I've not had this much fun in ages.
Thank you for this video, what keeps me from painting more often is I feel that every painting I do must result in something sellable. Because of the cost of supplies. A Result of my upbringing. My dad was a depression baby, you should never waste anything. When I was a kid and asked for paper to doodle on, every inch of the paper had to be covered before we got more paper... Front AND backsides! I have a dozen canvases that I've had for over a year and a beautiful huge canvas that I've had for 7 years. That paralyzes me because I don't want to ruin it. Throwing a canvas away? Wow deal changer. Permission to toss a canvas...😱 I've got many canvases I'd love to burn. Lol. 🔥
Well, I understand artists (painters ) should keep painting but even if they 'improve', it doesn't mean those are going to sell. Even though 1000 people think a painting is horrible, one could think it is amazing and buys it.
Stefan can you tell me what type of light stand with the adjustable doors you use? Ive found some that "look" simular but not the same and they have very mixed reviews Thank you!
Im a kinda confused at this point. It takes months for me to finish one painting bcoz i put layers after layers...one dries then next layer... Let it dry then again next layer n so on. How can i make a painting everyday when it takes me to almost 4 months to finish one? Help me.. Suggest me...
I love this ❤ thank you. However I need help learning to love detail. I cant stand detail work. I just want to get through it. I guess its what you call the monster stage. I just want to paint more impressionist style.
For someone taking up painting late in life, this video might be a cause for despair. Knowing that years of practice are required to master the art should temper one's aspirations. The same holds true for any worthwhile endeavor started late in life, I suppose. A beginner starting piano lessons at age 65 might hope to master "chopsticks", but Chopin will likely remain on the list of final regrets. Despite this, it can still be fun to push paint around.
Ah, wonderful observation, Nina’s Art Journey! A hopeful one as well. The lifespans of the first four folks were, in the order listed, 101, 96, 86, and 88. No need to belabor the point, but it does suggest they had a fair number of years in which to master their crafts. Your point remains valid, however. There is no reason to let age dictate ones activities and interfere with setting goals.
Intro is good but a little long. I think I would prefer a smaller intro or only when you actually are painting outdoors. Maybe another intro version for in class expertise as well, so it feels more natural.
Shawn Are going to start paying my rent or even these videos? Do you pay for any advice you get on RUclips? Do you work for free? I spend hours editing these videos just so Shawn can watch them for free and he says that I could do it better. Maybe Shawn would like to donate some of your time to make some free videos on painting. I know what you would prefer a smaller intro but the world thinks otherwise.
Yes, my dad was a professor emeritus and he always said graduations were terrible because it was about being pompous or making a political points vs. inspiring the students. I think your intro is kick ass, but thought it would be good on the intro to the channel vs. every video. Anyway, keep up the good work. You definitely are reaching a large audience.
I agree. I've been a fine arts major and had a range of instructors from hard core classical hard edge realists to loosey goosey Pollock and de Kooning Paint Splashers...but one thing *none* of them ever did, was lose control of the classroom...or studio. They're rude as hell and it's Baumann's fault for letting them *BE* that way!
Actually, Steve has little control of this. If he disciplines the students for talking, he basically loses the whole point of video as that would likely turn off the audience watching the video. I saw this same behavior in my Masters from students being irritating.

Wow you are such a good teacher. You make more sense than any other teacher.👏

Thank you so much for sharing these videos. As a hobbiest painter, I want to grow. Your videos help me understand what I need to do. Thank you again

Thanks again for your informative video
Why are there only 332 likes on this? 12,339 views. That is 3.71%? Horrific there are that many people who don't tip. Thank you Stefan.
Intentional practice every day has made my work improve so much in the last 10 yr! I need to find a way to find more homes for my work! 😘
Well start marketing Sing up with coaching
I needed to hear this advice. Thank you so much Stefan!

I'm inspired !
That's the clue. You can buy cheap canvases or papers and then you don't worry so much that you're throwing money away
As usual very though provoking, learnt a lot of valuable information from this talk. now I have a way forward, thanks so much.

really motivational
nice video thanks for posting
Stefan You've got to go to Ranker and add your channel and then have your students and viewers vote you to the top of the list

Please tell us what you were thinking in your big moose painting! I love it so much and I want to understand💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Skjtheartist Jamison Oh... Yeah that i finish in a single seating. Yet I'm not good at alla prima style of art.
I would consider coaching and learn a different way to attack a painting call me 415-606-9074
there are artist that paint complete finished paintings in a few hours that are amazing and not just a study

I very often paint from imagination, where does "what you see " come into That?
your mind's eye

Hi Stefan, I think the videos are great and the best of success. I thought it would just be an improvement on excellent material. No harm meant.
Shawn I was just kidding, I can take it, Ill be happy to consider it

Hi Stefan! Great vid, again. Are you ok with giving out a snail mail address for yourself? If so, thanks much.

Journy?
It’s such a shame that so many of these videos have a constant undercurrent of rude people talking during the lecture.
Wow. How about a little gratitude for getting to sit in on their class for free. Pretty generous of them, I would say.
And this is why they struggle with the painting, They listen with out hearing a word Mr. Baumann is saying.
Agreed, and the more serious students are taking his personal tutoring anyway.
Actually, Steve has little control of this. If he disciplines the students for talking, he basically loses the whole point of video as that would likely turn off the audience watching the video. I saw this same behavior in my Masters from students being irritating.
What has teaching done for your artwork? Does teaching have similar effect on your work as practicing?
OMG what are you wearing, you look like pirate LOL.
