This, here, is brilliant marketing. This is the fourth video of yours that I've watched. From minute one, there are glimmers of humor and tricks of the trade. I particularly appreciate the lighting tests in the last 8-minutes. I am sorry that I never caught the PBS series, but you're a wonderful teacher. Thanks for sharing on RUclips.
I`m at the beginning of painting, and I love doing it. What I`ve taken from this lecture is to find my niche. I`m most comfortable with people and now I feel I need to focus, instead of my mind being all over when I`m just learning. Selling any of mine would be a miracle right now, but It's good to know my path. Thank you.
So spot on! I always love the insight into the business side of art. I think too often we worry about being "original" and appealing to other artists. My best selling subject matter? Cat and dog portraits.
I have only just found you and I'm so glad I did!! You are such a fantastic combination of talent, experience, knowledge, excellent instruction, patience, encouragement, and humour, all blended and wonderfully presented to us with respect and in the form of a handsome man with a kind voice and a ready smile. I LOVE watching your videos and hearing your stories and most of all LEARNING from you! Thank you from the heart of my heart.... from whence my creativity flows🖌🎨
Thank you so much for your advice Mr. Stefan! I’ve been going in circles try to find that thing that i love and with this video I was able to look beyond of everything and focus on that thing that my phone is flooded with! I ama o thankful now I gotta get my hands on tha canvas!
you really hit home for me. A relative novice, I can feel very much like quitting my "hobby" because I am millions of miles behind the artists I admire. I am a determined soul, and it's a phase. Fortunately, you can enter the county fair at any age, and no great expectations, one way or another. Thanks for this video, and Facebook connections are terrific!
I am so impressed by your lectures, each one is a trove of information that is so helpfull. thank you for contributing your talent and time to help us achieve excellence.
Wow! Truthfully I was thinking to fast forward this video because I'm not into selling my art. After ten minutes I realized I was still listening to you, I was fascinated. My art teacher (many years ago) never told us most of the information you have shared. Goes to show you can always learn something new. Thank you for all your videos. Hugs!
Great advice. Focusing on a specific genre is a great idea. Overtime you get better at painting that genre and end up adding personal meaning to your work. You get identified with that genre and it becomes your personality. I know my own forte and I think you know it Stefan.
Tiia Johnson Art: I don't generally care to listen to long lectures, I prefer skimming written information to find what I'm looking for. But your voice and manner are so friendly and engaging that I really enjoyed and got more out of this than expected. I went through my phone and Instagram as you encouraged, but I'm not sure it helped me much to narrow down my wide range of interests! Realism & photography were my top scores in styles, although I've never considered photography as a saleable niche for myself, it scored high because it's so easy to take a lot of pictures compared to the time to compose and create a painting or drawing. Fantasy was the runner up there. In subject matter people, nature/wildlife, and scenery were almost a three way tie. So no closer to pinpointing what I'd actually want to paint forever without getting thoroughly sick of it. I'm not even counting clothing, costume and architectural design and manufacturing in various forms that I enjoy a great deal. As far as what I think I do best, probably animal wildlife. And Robert Bateman is a favourite, so wish I could meet him!
Thanks, and you are my facorite RUclips viewer, you should try my Patreon site or call me for coaching. but don't stop watching RUclips , I would miss you.
Thank you, this was really, really helpful. Upon thought, I considered all of the things I saw where I HAD to paint it, whether it was a person, a landscape, a garden, or water. But the thing is? I realized all of it was the human connection, whether to each other (especially children!) or to nature. But each thing had a story to tell, even if what I wanted to paint was a face. That face had a story and it made me excited to paint it, which to me tells their story. So thank you. I hadn't realized that until I saw this.
so true....my niche is clearly VIPs in Popart....faces did fascinate me my whole life, always....so no miracle, my paintings are maybe 98 Percent Faces and ONLY 2 percent others (abstract, animals etc.)...and as I always loved colours, I started to mix faces with colours, abstract backgrounds with VIPs....make them colourful.....still totally fascinating me and will do so for a long time for sure...I am constantly about 3 motives behind, so I always know the 2 or 3 I will paint later.:-)
I love the way Stefan covers so many bases! The best critique I've ever had was by Stefan many years ago! I just recently saw his video on light! When painting in oils, I try to get as much depth as possible! Started to paint on "raised surfaces - similar to embossing". For a 3-D effect. Now it's more like sculpture underneath the painting! Talking about light angles, it's really a mind blowing experience, that's entirely different! I've been using epoxy "putty" and automotive feathering compound! On 8th inch plywood, for the sculpturing effect. REALLY ADDS TO THE EFFECT OF THE DEPTH!
I love how you show us, we are always allowed to grow, change, evolve. Loved the hint, look thru your phone re pictures! It made me realize that I have thousands of cloud pictures. Will see if that's my niche. Starting today with small quick paintings.
You are a great teacher! I think I saw all of your videos and always look forward to see the new ones. Not many people are so honest about art creating and its promotion. Thank you , Ania Modzelewski
I paint what ever is breathtaking. That is what drives my engine. Period. I can’t be put in a box, the boredom would be to much. But I do have a favorite.
Ah, ok -- not too earth shattering really -- I started painting portals of buildings and the interaction of nature with man-made structures years ago when I started considering art while still working a "normal" job. Always have been drawn to architecture, details and how nature interacts and take over, particularly the forgotten corners of old or abandoned buildings. I tried figurative, still life but meh, they don't "sing" to me. My avatar is an example -- and this is what gets into shows and wins awards. Some subjects are prettier, so are sad and empty but the same theme seems to crop up. So there you have it :) And I will dabble in the occasional landscape and do figurative sketching for a change of pace.
I'm looking at tools in a whole new light :). going to try this experiment to see what reaction my husband has to the painting. thank you for always inspiring.
a tool and and an associated item give action, an old hammer and some cut nails, or a wood vise with a block plane and some shavings as examples. It's a lot less forced and allows for the viewer to participate. Great videos SB.
I love this - a friend was struggling with almost everything she painted and then she painted a sky with lovely clouds, water, with a wonderful high wave and playful dolphins and it was spot on! She nailed it. I told her it was a good lesson to learn to get to your niche. I think my niche is nature, trees etc. I could listen to your voice allllll day!! Theresa from Nova Scotia, Canada
Thanks for the encouragement, I like doing interplay between fantasy and macabre. Some people look down at my taste, but its good to hear that there might be people interested in my stuff. BTW The one at 29:00 makes them look like they are dancing

You have given me an idea of how to sell my art work and turn it into a long term business, thanks and will watch some more of your vids. I am going to have a go at painting my jewelry tools, as I have just started making jewelry.
Thank you Stefan. I'm a nature lover too, and love painting animals. But my problem is that I don't have the opportunity to travel and photograph the exotic wildlife I'd like to paint, lest paint from life. I've been wondering if it's a viable option to find wildlife photographers and purchase their photos to paint from? Or maybe there's a government website where they might be free? I understand there may be copyright laws I'd have to adhere to. There's an endangered wildlife contest coming up that I'd like to try.
When I first started painting I went through google and looked at a ll of the portrait paintings that were coming out that year. In Japan, China USA, London. At the end of that year I did not know exactly what I was doing but I had a very strong emotional attachment for a several kind of portraits. And also I knew the kind of portraits that you could sell without always painting commissions. Not sure if that makes sense? I am trying to meet gymnasts now because I paint gymnasts.
I was asked to do a portrait of a person’s pet ......was supplied with a reference photo...BUT.. I was told. ‘Don’t put any green in it because we don’t have green in our lounge room’.........just shows that people want wall decoration as much as anything........😳😳
.Interesting. I loved the light and the realism of "Adjustable" - but it never occurred to me to be distressed about the white cloth. I've done some wire-wrap jewelry, and to me, it looked pretty much like the start of setting up to work, nice cloth and all
I believe in painting what you want and challenging yourself. I think do what interests you. Picasso did anything he wanted to. Van gogh did flowers, landscape, portraits.

I love the way you explain the Light on a Painting 💫💫💫💫💫💫
Love how you said, "Paint like your life depends on it." Wow! That's great advice.
I`m at the beginning of painting, and I love doing it. What I`ve taken from this lecture is to find my niche. It has been always true
I am teetering on pet portraits myself. Add to the realism skill-set and make a little money.
I never thought about this aspect before watching THIS video. Color me enlightened.

Chrissy I always love hearing from you. you make me smile
great help -- going through my work I realized I had found my niche years ago -- and have been avoiding it. Your lecture made me ask "why"
Krys Pettit now I'm curious, what is your niche?
Yea we all want to know what you are avoiding.

Waste of time...never even talk about pricing on art.....🖕🏼
same kinda thing as "antiques roadshow." all about keeping prices down on what could/should be farrrrr more equitable
Another GREAT one Stefan ... Love ya' man !! Peace
Love you right back!
One of the best tips !! :)
Stevan Absolutely love your classes, so interesting. The word niche rhymes with leash, not bitch, as in cornering a niche market.
LizMcNamara47 the pronouncing of niche to rhyme with bitch is the normal way in the San Francisco Bay Area. You aren’t right.
I was asked to do a portrait of a person’s pet ......was supplied with a reference photo...BUT.. I was told. ‘Don’t put any green in it because we don’t have green in our lounge room’.........just shows that people want wall decoration as much as anything........😳😳
