That chart is awesome, so clear to see what colors changed and what stayed the same. Thank you!

Hi Eve! Thanks so much. Thinking of buying some Holbein, and wanted to see what you thought. 😻🦃😊

I love Holbein! The paints are so smooth, so well-behaved :)

As a primary floral painter, I like the new set so much better! The addition of reds, pinks, and violets meet the needs of a botanical painter much better, imo. I would have like to have has a yellow ochre and a phthalo green light in the new set though.

I like presence of Cobalts and reds in new set, but I guess I would miss the olive green and peacock blue from the old palette...

I think I'm favoring the old pallet but I do like some of the colors in the new one. Hmmm...it almost makes me want both sets 😯

Great video Eve! 😁 There are definitely some beautiful colors in both sets. There is one I would switch out in the greens and to bad the didn't keep the turquoise, but hey choices... lol 😉 Thanks for sharing! 🤗

Thanks Val!! :) It's very difficult to settle on one set, they both have great colors that the other one doesn't have...

Thanks for the comparison! They've changed the color selection quite a lot there.

Really liked the comparison. Hope to see more videos on the two palettes!

I really like how Holbein did to their tubes but one thing I miss is their rounded caps, as supposed to the standard cap design found in essentially all other watercolor tubes. They give me the extra leverage in turning te caps supposed of the standard ones sliding in my fingers. and they give a nice figure in the tube itself

Thank you sooo much for the viedo. It really helps alot for me to decide which one to buy. I will stick with the old version set. Once again thank you ! 😍

Thank you for this comparison. Didn't know they had new botanical sets available. Torn between them and the more expensive Daniel Smith or M. Graham

Actually I am a bit disappointed they dropped the Viridian Hue (which is a single pigment paint) and left only 2 and 3 pigment paints. The blues seem more suitable for botanical and I like that they included the Pyrrole red.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 лет назад +1

I agree! They dropped the only bluish green of all of them, which is a bit unbalanced...

Ho Eve, thank you very much to you and Oto’s generosity for making this comparison possible. I’m not a botanical painter so I’m not sure which one I would pick for that matter, but I really think that the new set is much more balanced in the colors choices, even though I don’t like the cad yellows first because of the toxicity and second for the opacity, same thing for the cerulean and the cobalt colors. Anyway I think the new set is very well thought and with that so many sets of primaries I think it will be an easy choice for any kind of watercolor artist. I think I will definitely add this set to my wish list. Thanks again! Cheers!

Wow, they're both vibrant and beautiful, but I am sure I like the new set better :) Lovely review as always Eve xo

The new set appeals more to me, both for mixing and their inclusion of purples.

I like the removal of black and white, not because I'm vegan but because it makes it look cheap to include such rarely (and for some, never!) used tubes in an expensive set. The Payne's grey made more sense there. I am also not a fan of Opera. Not lightfast enough.
We use the same thin blue tape though! I could tell by the 3M on it! It sticks just enough.

I don't use Holbein and would never call myself a botanical artist even though I do like landscapes. But, any watercolor set that does not include black or white is probably better than one that does include those colors.

I strongly prefer the new set, with the exception of Turquoise not being in it. If I were to pick up a set of Holbein, this would probably be the one, but I mostly just buy it by the 15ml tube on ebay now.

I am a fan of purple so the old set won me over. The colours look slightly different even though it's the same named paint.

im really happy to see that they do have a tube set without ivory black. im not a botanical artist myself but it looks like it has all the colors that i tend to like using and doesn't have the one color i would like to avoid buying (for not being vegan)

I didn't know you were vegan! And yes, true, it makes this set a fitting one for vegans! :D

I'll put my remarks in the order that you painted the palette. ☺️
Reds: On my screen, Crimson Lake and Carmine are look similar to include both.
Yellows: I think there needs to be a transparent warm yellow to mix up clear oranges. If not...
Oranges: Then a transparent orange should be added
Greens: A cool dark green would be helpful for painting a variety of foliage and forests
Blues: Once again, there's 2 paints too close in hue; cobalt blue and ultramarine light. Plus there's no 100% transparent blue of any kind.
Purples: Love them! 😍😍Don't change a thing Holbein!
Earths: Twin hues (yet again) with the burnt umber and van dyke brown. I'm glad they removed the black and white though.
WHREW!! That was a lot. It felt like I was writing a report card! Lol

Kinda weird the new one has only 3 greens for a botanical set.

They used to be available on Ebay, but I don't think they can be found there anymore. Not as easily, anyway. I wouldn't know where else, sorry.

Eve Bolt - Art & Cats they are on eBay but with shipping they are too expensive. It’s cheaper to buy the individual tubes when they go on sale and then get free shipping

I am not sure what is 'botanical' about these paints. What would interest me (easier said than done of course), is how to mix the slightly muted colours that I see in botanical art (like the work of Billy Showell for example). She seems to have a knack for getting good realistic colour.

    • @Echo-Of-Noise
      @Echo-Of-Noise 6 лет назад +1

For mixing muted colors you usually just add a bit of the opposite color (for a muted green you add a tiny bit of red)

Hi! I am new to your channel. Can I please request a review on the Mungyo 48 watercolor set? I am planning to buy it but I need to see more reviews to it because I can't seem to find that many reviews of it here on youtube. Thank you very much!
