My 2014 Chevy 1500 has the tailgate assist from the factory, and it doesn't have a shock to assist it.

I have a Ram Rebel. Not sure if the same steps apply but I'd assume so.
I had one installed on the driver side, over time the bolt on the tailgate started to loosen. Today it broke off the threads completely making the driver side unusable. So I installed on the passenger side, shut the tailgate, tried to open it and my tailgate popped off. Can it not be installed on the passenger side?
Trying to figure out how to fix now 🤦
