Hiking 180km on the GR20 - The Toughest Trail in Europe? (4K)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 июн 2024
- The GR20 is a 180km/110mi hiking trail considered by many as the toughest trail in Europe. And what I find even more surprising is that it is located on the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea.
While being famous for its rocky and rugged characteristic, the GR20 also offers a wide variety of spectacular alpine views and an unforgettable hiking experience.
Every year thousands of hikers attempt to hike the GR20, with the majority hiking from June through September. However I had some free time in October and had the chance to experience the beauty of the autumn colours through the rugged terrain along the GR20 hiking trail.
Sit back, relax and enjoy this journey into nature!

"I didn't have a positive experience with the store owner" - Welcome to France Lyubo! 😂
Hehe, yeah I guess the man at the store was just way too tired of seeing hikers all season...
We had the same experience. He was swearing and getting cross his wife tried to calm him down. Faulty towers ?
What a wonderful video of your hike. Thank you so much for taking the time to stage and record all those sections. My family is doing this soon and we can't wait.
What a beautifully made film..
Thank you so much!
This is absolutely stunning mate.
Top Level!
You should definitely keep producing content like this!
Thank you
Thank you! I am you enjoyed watching it, There is at least one more hiking video that I would like to release in the next few months, stay tuned :)
I've just watched this again after some months. I can't believe I didn't like or comment the first time. An absolute delight to watch. Visually enthralling and informative, with a humble delivery. Keep it coming and stay safe.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I am glad you found it enjoyable to watch! Happy hiking!
I did it about 50 years ago and still remember many of these places. It looks still the same. Thank you for this great film.
Thank you so much, and wow! I can imagine it was even more remote back then, it must have been a great adventure!
An excellent record of your trip - well done. I walked the GR20 twice in the 1980s but that was before the internet. It would have been interesting to see your video before going, but in those days you only had the guide book! Your account brought back a lot of memories. Great job.
Wow, it must have been a totally different experience back then. I am glad you stumbled upon my video and that it brought good memories to you from the trail. With the technology and the advancement of the backpacking gear it is so much easier for us nowadays.. I hope you are still enjoying spending time in nature and the outdoors, Cheers!
Would you, as an experienced hiker from before the internet, be willing to share some hiking routes online that are worth trying again ?
Wonderful video all around; incredibly helpful for planning, beautiful compositions, great music, solid narration, and very well edited. Excellent job on this, and thank you so much. I'm hoping to do it this year and this helps a lot with the planning phase. Thank you.
Thank you so much for appreciating the work that goes into making these films! I am glad you found it both enjoyable to watch and helpful with your planning! I hope you will have a great experience on the GR20 (if you didn't already visit Corsica) :)
GR20 in october is the best. Great vid!
Thank you!! I haven't done it any other times, but I had a great time out there in October :) Happy hiking!
The tree growing sideways 🤯 would make a nice thumbnail! Hiking masterpiece again, great job!
Thank you! Yeah, actually that tree was one of my other ideas for the thumbnail. I might change to it :) Cheers!
Brilliant Lyubo. Love that. All of your work setting the camera, backtracking on your path, filming, editing, sound - great work. Thank you so much. I'm off to the GR20 next August and you've got me questioning - alone or in a group. All the best.
Thank you so much for appreciating the effort that goes into making these! And for me it's a tough question hiking solo or in a group, I would say it depends a lot of the other people, if you have some previous experience hiking with them, it would make it easier and can be a very positive hiking experience! Best of luck on your trip!
I am hoping to do the GR20 next year and this video was just what I needed to get an idea of the route and the level of difficulty to be expected. Excellent work - thank you!
Thank you!! I hope you will get the chance to experience it this year, it's an incredible hike!
Great film, thank you so much!
My pleasure, thank you for watching!!
woww what an intense hike!! this was so awesome to watch, the variety in scenery is absolutely stunning!! also, shot selection and editing is on point 😇👌
Thank you! I was also surprised by how beautiful Corsica was!

Excellent video Lyubo, great footage and narration. Thank you for sharing! You’ve convinced me to book my visit!
Thank you! And I am glad it inspired you! It's a really beautiful and at times rough trail, Have a great time out there! :)
A great video and it brought back so many memories. It took me twice as long as you to do the GR20 in June 2019! You had exceptionally good weather too.
Thank you John, I am glad it could bring back good memories! And yes I would say I was lucky with the perfect weather for hiking in Corsica :)
Hoorah a new hiking video!
Such great and inspiring content, keep it up! Beautiful journey👍🏼💛
Thank you, It was a beautiful hike indeed!
Congratulations Brother, and thank you for sharing your excellent adventure!

Stunning video. This just went on my bucket list. Thanks for the inspiration
Thank you! I am glad I could inspire :) I hope you will get the chance to cross it off your list :) It's a tough but beautiful trip!
Love this video! The dialog makes it very calming to watch and WOW what a scenery :D
Thank you! I was pleasantly surprised with how beautiful Corsica was as well :)
The video is just incredible, congralutations for this extreme trip in Corsica ! I hope you will make hundred of thousands views on this video !

Wonderful hike and beautiful scenery. thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your comment, I am glad you liked it!
Great story telling.
Thank you!! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much. You found the perfect balance showing lndscapes and also explaining your ecperience
Thank you! I am glad it was an enjoyable watching experience :)
First of all, I want to tell, that you are awesome!!!
Filming is really good, and you spend a lot of time and power doing these shots of yourself. That is great!!!
Also, you have an amazing endurance. 9 days ... wow !!! Twice faster than me. And a week faster than usual. Plus, you are wearing such thin sneakers... Can't imagine how you manage not to hurt your feet.
And your food. You are cold eater. What you were taking along? As I see it is muesli and potato? What else?
And one more time thank you for the film!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words! Having a lighter pack definitely helped with being able to go quicker along the route, but I also after all the rocky surface towards the ends of the days I would have pain on my knees and ankles. Taking it slower or stopping earlier I would have probably avoided all that pain.. And regarding food I would usually have a oats/musli/granola with nuts, raisins, protein powder, sugar, coconut flakes, then during the day I would have chocolate bars and nuts and dried fruit, and then for dinners I would usually have either noodles or couscous with peanuts, TVP (granulated soy), coconut flakes, spices and sometimes ketchup.. And I would usually soak the dinner for about 30minutes to an hour so it will be ready to eat :) Cheers!
Another ultra-performance in your hiking career so far, both in the hike itself and in the video created! I look forward to many more around the world!
Hehe, thank you for the support Nico! Hopefully more to come, cheers!
Amazing video!!! Thank you for sharing your esperience on gr20

Hello Lyubo, many thanks for posting this brilliant film! My friend and I were actually hiking the north section of the GR20 just a few days before you, and it was a pleasure to see some of the sights again so vividly and relive the experience.
Hehe, thank you! I am glad I could help you to experience again some of these places through this video :)

GORGEOUS scenery/landscape.
Toataly agree, the island of Corsica was filled with great views!
What a journey! Great adventure and movie!! 😁😍

Best video I’ve seen of the GR20 experience! My wife and I did the hike in 2016, though in more days! Thank you for bringing back so many life affirming memories!
Thank you for the kind words, and I am glad it brought back good memories!! :) Happy hiking!
Really good video, it's probably the best I could find so far no the gr 20!
I've already been on the trail for a few days, a thruhike is definitely still on the agenda.
All the best to you!
Thank you so much! I hope you managed to make it all the way, or that you at least had a great experience out there! Cheers!

I really enjoyed watching this ! 😍 Beautiful movie, really ! I made it last year during the summer. Congratulations for hiking alone out of season. Respect ! 😃
Thank you Pierre, and respect for hiking the GR20 as well!
Going to hike this trail with my buddy next summer. I will be 18, with a tiny bit of French knowledge. I am beyond excited. Amazing video!
I hope you will have a great time out on the island of Corsica, it's a stunning hike! And a bit of french could come quite useful, especially if you will be hiking during a busier time of the year. Best of luck!
This video is amazing, enjoyed watching the full part of it. Now I am sure that I will have to go there for hiking. Greetings from Poland :D
Cześć! :) I hope you get a chance to do it! It is a tough one, but definitely worth it!
Amazing
Thank you!
Awesome video once again Lyubo! Keep inspiring us to go on great hikes. :)
Thank you! Inspiring others is a big part of making these films. I just returned from a trip to Norway, so there should be a new (and shorter) film coming sometime in the future. Cheers!
@@luboyanev Cool! Looking forward to that one. Norway is also high on the bucket list.
@@beerdemus2812 Yes, Norway was a beautiful place, but it also brought its challenges, stay tuned!

Excellent video, my friend. I am also doing the GR20 solo in mid-October. I start in a few days. Thanks for helping with my preparation.
My pleasure, I hope also have a great time out there! Feel free to let me know how your trip went :)
@@luboyanev I completed in eight days. It is the hardest hike I have ever done. I lost the trail on day two when I took lunch at Asco and then proceeded to hike the Cirque de la solitude. Almost died, but other than that section, enjoyed the hike and the fall colors. 😆
@@CaryMercer amazing and congratulations! It's was a pretty physically challenging hike for me as well, but totally worth the effort! And good job for doing it in only 8 days!
@@luboyanev My video is up if you want to check out more from Corsica.
Great video, was supposed to do the trail in 2019 but never got around to it. I really enjoyed the colors you were able to capture 👍
Thank you! Yeah I was pretty lucky with the timing :) If you still desire to hike the GR20, I hope you get a chance to do it!

Great job, bro! It was really enjoyable to watch this kind of adventure. Regards and see ya in Grado ;)
Хехе, мерси Любаче :) Поздрави!
Very nice!
Thank you!!
I'm heading there tomorrow, can't wait!
Your video deserves so much more views, that's the best one I saw about the GR20 yet!
Thank you Markus! I hope you had (or that you're still having) a great experience along the Corsican mountains!
@@luboyanev Thank you, it was amazing. But it was a bit harder than I expected, so I only had time to go from Calenzana to Vizzavona. But I'll come back and do the rest in the future :)
@@MarkusFolz Yeah, and the north section is the tougher part of the trail, so congrats on completing that! And good to hear you still had a good time out there.
@@MarkusFolz I just saw your story highlights from your trip, it looked like you also managed to hike during the fall colors, and mostly good weather. But I was curious, I saw we have the same Duplex tent, and you had managed to have it pitched on the platforms near the huts. How did you manage to pitch it, it looked very well taut, did you tie rocks or sticks to the guylines, or did you use these platform anchors that zpacks sells? And btw. if I could give one piece of advice, I saw your footprint extended quite a lot away from the sidewalls, and this way when water drips down the tent it would gather up. I have cut my footprint to be the size of the baththub floor of the tent (or even slightly smaller), about 225cm by 110cm, so that water won't drip on it, and still protects the tent floor. Hope that will be helpful
@@luboyanev Awesome, thank you for the tip with the footprint. I had some issues with water building up between the footprint and the tent. Sometimes I stuffed the footprint under the tent, but most of the times I was too lazy... But I'll definetly cut it for the next trip! :)
I used my normal tent stakes as kind of an anchor to pitch the tent on the wooden platforms, I'll send you a video on Instagram
Bravo
Thank you!
Loved your videos ...
Thank you!! Happy hiking!
Great video
Thank you!
very good film, full with info. want to go there straight away))
Hehe, thank you! I hope you get the chance to hike these mountains :)
Nice video, great job, Thanks
Thank you!
Awesome Video!!!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I learned very intresting things from this video : October is stunning, a man with a camera made the hike look moderate just very long, due to all the refuges you don't need to carry a tent, it didn't seem there is any extreme scrambling on this route
Thank you! And you have a good eye, October was indeed a great time to hike, though just in case to have the safety, I carried a shelter with me as some of the shelters in the lower half were locked and closed, and yes while there was some scrambling sections usually they weren't very long and not hard to manage.. Happy hiking, and best of luck if you decide to give the GR20 a try, it's a great hike!
Great job! I did the GR20 this year, but not in such a speed or with headlamp 😀
Thank you! And that's ok, I'm sure you still had a great experience out there :) Happy hiking this upcoming summer!
Както винаги прекрасно поднесен филм , все едно ходи човек с теб докато гледа... Браво! Баща ти ми вика оня ден: Пуска нов филм утре ... знае с къв кеф ги гледам :)

@@luboyanev badly.... WE ..I so WE have failed with right knee issue. Next try in two years!
@@romainnosal669 I hope you're feeling better and ready to tackle it! Best of luck!
Fantastic video! Informative, beautiful and lots of atmosphere. What would you say are the top-5 most important things to know about hiking the GR20?
Thank you! And that's a good question! On the top of my head:
- Know how to get to the trailhead
- Know how much food you will need to carry (depending on estimated pace and if the huts are open and serving meals)
- Try to lower the weight of the gear, the GR20 has a lot of steep and rocky terrain, the heavier the pack the harder will be the experience
- Know which season you'll be hiking, summer might be very hot (I don't have personal experience with hiking it in the summer so it's only a guess)
- The trail is even prettier in real life
Happy hiking :)
Nice 😊
Thank you!
Love the way you document your hikes, it is just a joy to watch.
How big was your backpack and what do you take in it? How do you shower or wash clothes?
Thank you for the kind words!! On that hike I used a 38L pack (with 25L of the internal volume and 13L in the outside pockets), so it was quite small, but I was just enough to carry everything with me. And I flew with it as a carry on bag. And for showering and washing clothes, I usually do it in the lakes or rivers, or if there are any huts along the way, I would also shower there (on this hike I showered in the refugios in Calenzana before starting the hike, then in Vizzavona and Bavella). Happy hiking!
A brilliant film mate, thank you. Looks awesome and it's on the list of trails to do. Was it relatively easy to follow?
Thank you! Yeah, I would say the trail is very well marked, but there were very few places where I got off trail and having the offline map and gpx file of the trail on my phone helped to easily get back on the trail. Happy hiking!
Magic stuff Lyubo!! Thank you for this wonderful content. It helps a lot when you're stuck behind a desk 😂 If you're ever in Cape Town, South Africa, give me a shout. Would love to show you our mountains.
Hehe, thank you Arno! I am glad it made your day more magical :) And I will let you know if I at some point end up going on a hiking trip in South Africa :) Cheers!
awesome video...I hope to be able to do this hike one day
Thank you!! It's a wonderful (and sometimes challenging) hike, I hope you get a chance to do that too!
Great video. The narration, the shots and the information. Just wondering about your conclusion - The toughest trail in Europe?
Thank you, I am glad you appreciated the effort! And regardless being the toughest, I think because I pushed myself to do two stages every day, and from walking on the hard rocks all day towards the end of the days I would start getting pretty bad pain on the sides of my knees and on my ankles, and I was carrying a pretty light pack. I think if I was doing one stage per day it would be way less painful and not so tough. I don't know if you saw my video from Lofoten, personally I had a tougher time there mostly because of the climate. The views on the GR20 also made the hard parts worth it. In the end hard to say if it's the toughest trail in Europe :) It is challenging, but it is worth it..
I started to film my adventure as well, with drone shot and camera shot.
I love your stuff, you have good idea and a good way to tell your adventures :) !
Thank you, and nice, just checked your videos - looking good, keep up the good work!
@@luboyanev So kindz ty !
Thank you for the beautiful video! Your backpack doesn't seem to be too heavy. Could you maybe tell us about everything you take on a trip and about the food you bring? Maybe you can do a video about it :).
Thank you, and very good suggestion, I have actually filmed a gear video, but I didn't think it turned out that good and never published it. In a few months I would like to release a new hiking film from a trip to Norway, and I might make a video about my gear then. Stay tuned, and enjoy your winter :)
Superb film. Big fan of your work, Lyubo. Maybe see you in the Scottish mountains one day.

Hey Lyubo, super nice video with wonderful pictures. Little question, what did you eat throughout the day? I saw porridge one or two times...
Thank you! And yes, I would have porridge everyday (with musli/granola, nuts, raisins, protein powder, sugar, coconut flakes), then as snacks I would have chocoalte bars or nuts and dry fruits, and for dinners I soaked either noodles or couscous with peanuts, TVP (granulated dehydrated soy), raisins, and spices. Happy hiking!

You are one of the best hikers in youtube.
You should come to Portugal and try our national parque...Gerês. Congratulations
Thank you! And I thanks for the recommendation, never heard of it and looking on the photos online it does look nice. I have thought about hiking on Madeira, it looks so beautiful and seems like these days it's a really popular place to visit for hikers and tourists..
Congrats!
Next one one could be The Peaks of Balkans ~ 190 km trail.
And your videos are so inspiring. But I always ask myself... how tf he doesn't hate that "put the camera in position, return a few steps for recorrding, and get back to pick up the camera..."
Thank you for the recommendation, it's the first time I hear about this trail.
And for the filming - it's a good question. You gotta really love it, even though sometimes it can be tough when you're tired or you wish to have reached camp already, but when you have an idea in your mind to create a good story the process can be enjoyable, and seeing and capturing great views also helps :) Cheers!
For that I have an extra portion of respect ! Wonderful video of my favourite place on earth .
Thank you so much for this video Lyubo! So beautiful yet so informative. The GR20 has been on my radar lately but I was put off by the huge crowds hiking it. I wasn't sure if it was doable late in the season but you definitely gave me confidence. May I ask you how was the water situation? Did you have to do long water carries? I read that sources often dry up in autumn
Thank you! Yes, I saw from a few other videos that it can get crowded during the high season. And regarding water, my total carrying capacity was 2liters (1L bottle, and 1L water filter), though I never carried more than 1L. I would usually fill up in the morning and then fill up at the next hut or at water source around lunch. There were many ridge hikes on the GR20 where there was no water, and it was good to be prepared for it with extra water. I think also because the temperatures weren't so high I didn't need to carry so much compared to if it was during the heat of the summer. And I only had one time where I was running low on water, it was on the last day and it was getting warmer and there was source that was running slow but still flowing, so I used my filter to fill up on water. Hope that helps!
It helps a lot! Thank you :) Looking forward to watch your next adventure! Cheers
