Additional tip: don't think in terms of kilometers, but think in terms of time/duration. Some 'étappes' are only 9 kilometers long but take 8 hours to hike because there's a lot of ascending and descending! Also, I made a little mistake when talking about the amount of water I carried: in the video I say I carried 3 litres of water but I only carried 2! That's not a lot, though, and definitely the least amount of water you should carry as it's very hot on trail and sometimes there aren't a lot of streams. So if you normally drink a lot of water during hiking I would definitely recommend to take 3 litres with you.
for someone growing up in the dolomites (and living in the alps) it's still a mistery that people talk about "length" (like "I've hiked 20km") instead of altitude (like "I've hiked up 1300m") 😂 I guess for long distance hiking it's fair, but like you're suggesting: most people that didn't grow up in the mountains (or aren't used to it that much) don't take a close look to elevation gain. As a very rough rule of thumb I'd say count every 100m of elevation as 1km. i.e. 9km with 2000m of ascent (and descend) are like around 30km on flat terrain. VERY rough and HIGHLY dependent on terrain (i.e. is it walkable or do you need a lot of actual climbing, perhaps even a rope) but will give unexperienced people an idea.
Thank you for a great informative video! I'm thinking about hiking the GR20 next year and have enjoyed listening to all your pieces of advice. Merci beaucoup 😊

Very nice advices - I live in Corsica, I hiked the GR20 several times and all the tips you share are good ! Hope you will come back to see us someday :)
Hi, as you're from Corsica... I was planning GR20 this (early) summer. What's your opinion about the chances if it comes to covid situation? I saw videos from 2020, so my assumption is this year should be doable too.
Epické. Díky. Úplně mě to vrátilo do 2012 jak sem to šel a byl to kolikrát brutal, plival jsem krev, ale stálo to za to. Hezké vzpomínky na to mám. Ať to šlape a točí!
How did you start/get into hiking? What are good trails for beginners? What trails did you start with? Essential skills to go hiking? Do you hike alone most of the time (like a solo hike/travel) or with friends?
Hi, nice video. I want to know what's the temperature at night by camping near a hut. Do you know that? In other words, is it necessary to pack a puffy or a fleecejacket?
you re a little star!!! thank you for the cool advices!!! training and preparing to hit the GR20 on late June!!! you're of a very good help! greetings from London!
I love your video on GR 20 I’m preparing to do it. Question: what’s best to do the trails south to North or north to south . Also I want to summit monte Cinto Thanks
Hi - at 9:35 you mention taking water bottles. Where can you refill these? Is it only at one of the managed huts along the route? Also, are there toilets and showers at every hut? And do they provide hot water? Thank you
Would you recommend hiking the GR 20 when being afraid of heights? Are the scrambling parts very exposed? Thx for all your information, they seem to be very helpful!
Cool video, Im thinking about doing it soon ! I don't know if you are a french speaker but your accent is good when you say the cities in french. And yes in Corse everyones speaks french ( and some also speaks Corse)
Hey Yann! So cool that you're planning on hiking the GR20! I live 15 km from Brussels (and go to school in Brussels) so that's why my french sounds quite ok :). Have fun in Corse!!
Hey Floor, al je video's meteen bekeken, super leuk! Ik heb deze zomer een deel van de Adlerweg gelopen, super mooi! Maar jammer genoeg geen mogelijkheid om te kamperen.
Hi Floor, thank you very much for your advice on gear. I've just completed the TMB and loved my duplex & lighter pack - managed to get base weight down to 6.5kgs. I have got my eye on the GR20 now and would be grateful if you would advise how technical are the technical sections of GR20 - is there much scrambling? Also, you carried 3 litres of water - that would really up my weight - was it ever possible to collect water from streams? I was hoping to get away with carrying 2 litres. Thank you very much again Floor, Alli
Hey Allison! I actually made a mistake in this video: I carried two litres with the possibility of carrying three (with a platypus waterbag), but I never needed three. Two litres is not a lot, though. It's definitely the least you have to take with you. There are streams on the way but on some stretches there aren't many. Compared to the TMB the GR20 is definitely more technical, but I guess you already know that :). It's nothing impossible (I don't have any climbing experience) and I quite liked the stages where you had to scramble a little. It does slow you down a lot, though, so don't think in terms of kilometers during a day because sometimes you will be hiking for eight hours to do only six kilometres and sometimes you will hike 20 kilometres in 8 hours. The most scrambling parts are located in the Northern part of the GR20 (specifically the first four stages if you start in the North)!
Do you think it would be possible to use a hammock with a tarp instead of a tent? are there étappes where setting up a hammock wouldn't be possible because of the lack of trees or might it even be forbidden to set up a hammock? I'm not sure if a hammock would give me more Comfort than a tent, but i like the idea of it, what do you think^^? I'm planning on filming a Documentary movie on my own this summer, great Job by the way on your Video 😁👍🏼
Hey! I think that’s quite impossible. There are a lot of areas with little to no trees, most campsites next to a réfuge are flat grass grounds. A tarp alone (and sleeping on the ground) is totally possible, but I wouldn’t take a hammock with you :).
Hi! The Cirque is permanently closed because there was a major accident in 2015. Geologists noted that there were too many loose stones on that section for it to be safe, so the trail goes over the former variant of Monte Cinto now :).
Hi Floor, this is my first comment on RUclips, so I hope you see it, even if this video is a bit older. Thanks for this video, it is very inspiring. I have one specific question: how did you train for the gr20, can you maybe describe the necessary physical /sport level you need to receive before hiking the gr20?
Pack your backpack with weights 🎒 and go every or every other day walking/hiking in your hood. Walking regularly hills, Yoga, breathing techniques ...clean eating (no alcohol; no sugar; no fast food; no artificial stuff) everything can help.
Snakes don't have ears; so making noise won't affect the snake. They do feel vibration and their vision is highly sensitive to movement. So stamp your feet and wave your hands. That'll frighten the snake and it will disappear into the undergrowth.
Hey Carmen! I was planning to, but unfortunately my coming months are super busy so I don't have the time to hike it... It's definitely still on my list, but it'll be a project for later :).
Congrats for your GR20 ! I hear you runout of toilet paper 😅 I had the same issue until I begin a portable bidet. Check it out but don’t run out water😅 thx for your videos
Unfortunately I am busy hiking other trails and as I am not showered with money at the moment, for 170 km I can't go to Korsika. Also I am not so sharp looking, therefore no navette captain would offer me a ride. But you have the coolest pack ever, I love mine.
Yes, understandable! It's important that you use your red light on your headlamp and that you're super quiet when you pack up that early. Respect towards other hikers is always a priority on campsites, so I'm as quiet and quick as I can be in that situation. It's possible when you have an easy setup that you know well so that you can pack it up in less that 10 minutes :)!
Then get your sorry ass up earlier. Like I’m not supposed to leave early if I so choose because your sleeping. You better get a grip that this world doesn’t revolve around you. I hope I run into you one day… with that attitude I will most definitely make loud noises just to wake you up.
Additional tip: don't think in terms of kilometers, but think in terms of time/duration. Some 'étappes' are only 9 kilometers long but take 8 hours to hike because there's a lot of ascending and descending!

Where can you purchase gas canisters for camping stove before starting the trail?
Great tips thank you ! I seen you have done a few bigger ones than this, well done
HI, what sort of sleeping mat did you use on the GR20. I set off in a week and am considering a foam mattress as I know that won't pop!
Thank you so much for the information. Where can we charge the batteries ie: mobile phone, power bank??

Hey! It's mostly at the huts, yes. Although you do pass some streams along the way where you can use a waterfilter to fill you waterbottles :)!
Thank you, Floor! This is really handy!
very informative video! was wondering if you could maybe do a video on gear? like how you transitioned to ultralight maybe?
Did you do much training before and did you solo hike?😊
Thanks for the advice, it feels like years ago when we were able to go out. I really wanna visit Corsica now haha

Thanks!
Want to the GR20 this year, just completed the Camino Português, I know very different 😂

I was planning to, but I won’t be having enough time this year. I will definitely do it in the future!

Can i walk the gr20 in my Salomon trail running shoes?
I saw several people hiking in trail runners, so if they have good grip on the soles it's definitely possible!
If it's worth a video I would love to see some tips for the TMB. I did a lot of research but maybe you've got some great advices for that trail.
