  • 🌞🌴 How to Safely Use Sunscreen Sprays: Face or Palm? 🌴🌞
Hey there! It's Mo, your friendly toxicologist and safety assessor. Today, I'm sharing some important tips on using sunscreen sprays safely for maximum protection! ☀️🛡
    🔍 Understanding Sunscreen Spray Types:
There are two types of sunscreen sprays: pump-based and propellant-based (with a gas for smooth application). Both forms, along with powders, carry the risk of inhalation and oral exposure. That's why in the EU, specific safety limits are set for UV filters in lotions, creams, and sprays, like octocrylene, to ensure your safety.
    🧪 Factors Affecting Safety:
When safety assessing sprays, various factors come into play. The properties of the sprayed droplets, such as density, electrostatic properties, and hygroscopicity, can impact safety. But the most crucial factor is the droplet size and the number of droplets that can be inhaled deeply (respirable fraction). The SCCS recommends that less than 20% of droplets released should be respirable.
    ⚠️ Ensuring Safe Use:
As a consumer, it's not easy to know all these details, so follow the brand's instructions carefully. If they recommend spraying directly on your face, rest assured they've considered safety measures. However, if instructions are unclear, you can always apply on your palm and rub it in. Safety first! 😷💧
    🌿 My Top Recommendation:
To be extra cautious, I suggest applying sunscreen spray on your palm and gently rubbing it onto your face. This reduces any potential risk while ensuring you're protected from harmful UV rays. Remember, your health matters most! 🙌💖
    📧 Need Clarifications?
If you're ever unsure, don't hesitate to email the brand for more information. It's essential to stay informed about what you're using on your skin.
    👉 Always Choose Safety:
Whether you're heading to the beach or just stepping out, keep your skin safe from the sun's rays. Apply sunscreen generously, and take that extra step to ensure proper usage. Your skin will thank you! 🙏🌟

Thank you so much for your comment 😊🤗 yes it's always a risk and of course assessed when testing UV filters but for sprays it falls more in the brand responsibility and that's why it's super important to follow a brand direction 😊🤗

I use only lotions with SPF, never used spray so it's good to know this information. Very useful ❤

Hi Mo! So in the EU the UV filter safety requirements depend on the sunscreen packaging (pump vs gas propellant spray), rather than the formulation. People are less likely to pat the sunscreen in (as they should) if they use a gas propellant sunscreen, if they are spraying it directly onto their skin.
If I finish work during daylight hours, before my drive home, I spray a gas propellant sunscreen over my makeup. I then pat the sunscreen in with face powder.
I'm definitely "covering all bases" using a 50+ sunscreen, in addition to SPF30+ foundation & powder...both morning & afternoon/early evening.
I do this most importantly for skin health, but also for aesthetic reasons (aka vanity)! I like to keep my skin as youthful, healthy (untanned), smooth and even-toned as possible.
Also, just reminding everyone not to store any type of sunscreen in your car because it will not maintain it's effectiveness. They also have the danger of exploding when they are in gas propellant packaging. Keep sunscreens in cool places at home, at work, or in your satchel/backpack/handbag.
      👱🏻‍♀️❤️
