Surreal, creative and totally outside of the box, perhaps one of the greatest ads created...

I used to go the cinema just to watch this ad. I had no idea it was 10CC at time, but bought the album being a big fan and it blew my mind when the ad music suddenly came out of the speakers.

Well it was half of 10cc anyway, Godley & Creme. They left the band to do the "Consequences" triple album, which also had contributions from satirist Peter Cook and American jazz legend Sarah Vaughan.

Hugh Hudson broke the mold and changed the way adverts were made after the B&H offerings, such was the impact of them you often left the cinema more enamored of these than the film you went to watch. Still considered in the advertising industry as the masterpieces they were, and still are....... now 43 yrs old, yet look like they were made this decade.

Having left CDP a few years earlier to pursue a career as a photographer, I was fortunate to be at D&AD for this when it was shown at full volume picking up a Gold. It received a never ending standing ovation and to this day makes my spine tingle every time I play it.Waldie & Mike at their best. And of course Hugh and everyone else involved in the making.

I've never smoked but I remember this being shown loads of times in local cinema. Wasn't the music done by guys from 10cc with some sort of guitar synth back then. Brings back memories of young days in the back seats ha ha

Godley & Cremes' Gizmotron first used on the 'Consequences' triple album, amazing piece of music, great memorable ad.
Could be interpreted in this day and age as the consequences of smoking will turn you into lizard food, packed like sardines in a can.
That's why this particular ad seemed so ahead of its time, time has no relevance for these inter dimensional reptilian hybrids.
Just a thought, (outta the box.)

I can somehow imagine this being a Superbowl ad in America in the 1970s. I wonder what American TV viewers would have made of it?

Music from Godley and Creme using thier invention the Gizmatron. Unsure if they directed it but it does look as though they might have.

No, just their music was used, specifically an excerpt of "Wind" from their prog rock epic "Consequences".
The director of this advert was Hugh Hudson, also director of the Academy Award winning film "Chariots of Fire".

Trying to promote smoking as a challenge for those who weren't afraid of taking risks. Advertising trick of turning a disadvantage into an advantage.
