It really can't be overstated just how truly impactful TLP was. While yes, in comparison to everything we have nowadays, it's certainly lacking. To say that TLP laid the ground work for a lot of the hacking scene today is absolutely true. And c'mon, Kelik is SO damn edgy he loops back around to being fun.
The kid is a genius. He has all my respect. He as a teenager, drew better pictures, composed better music and knew a whole lot more about making games than 99.9% of the entire FE community now. I would never criticize his writing. Everyone understands that teenagers then were heavily influenced by japanese anime like Naruto and one piece.
Does his Kellik animation also made by himself? If it did then dude you were just a teenager back then and you created that kind of animation. It does edgy but hey I won't lie it does look cool and badass. And it was made by a SINGLE TEENAGER.
First time seeing it and the dialogue was genuinely great. I think i think the toxin part onward was unnecessary and i can see the cheese, but those first 4 text boxes were great!
TLP is part of my trinity of favorite hacks/hacks that I recommend to people who are looking for new FE games. It is old AF and does show its age, but its dialogue and character designs and such have such a charm to me that I smile anytime I play it. And like you said, yeah Blazer was just a teen and made this entire thing BY HIMSELF! That's fucking insane and that should be a major inspiration to anyone who is trying to make a ROM hack. And that was during a time where ROMHacking was probably a figurative and literal Nightmare (get it?). I do come back to it occasionally and still find that charm in all of it, and when I first played it, it was kind of a real challenge and marvel of what people can do. I'm excited for the stream, and while this game has plenty of flaws (like any game), it is one that I treasure wholeheartedly alongside the more advanced hacks we have today.
It had voice acting, which no matter what you think of it is a unique thing to it, and it also had a unique post game even if the last map for it wasn’t finished. It wouldn’t set the world on fire compared to some hacks today, but it definitely set a standard and a tone for a lot of larger scale hacks today to build on. I’ll never forget the Tactics Universe days.
When i was young, i played this hack not knowing it was a hack, as it was simply on the emulation platform romstation back then as a standalone game, i played FE7/8 after having played FE9/10 on Gamecube and Wii as i didn't own any of the fire emblem game on GBA. I remember vividly thinking it was better than the other 2, then playing FE6 and thinking it was better than all of them.
Honestly the story having as much cringe as it does probably works in its favor. How many people actually talk about the story of rom hacks long after they've played them like they do with TLP? Also it was pretty long and actually finished with good gameplay at the time when most romhacks kind of sucked, so I'd say it was honestly pretty good all things considered.
I'll still always laugh my ass off whenever I hear Kelik's theme play in the game but overall I remember having a lot of fun with it. Ironmanning Rom Hacks is always something I wanted to see.
Also, when TLP came out, the romhacking scene was much mor earchaic compared to today. Heck, from what I remember, even REPLACING ONE CHAPTER was considered a large feat as most romhacks were mostly FE7 remakes with different characters. Might remember this wrong, though. One thing I loved about TLP is that the Armor Knight you get is actually really useful Kevin is the true MVP.
After "Keklik" opened up his ether, he said, "Are you "The Last Promise" because you are "can handle all this weight."? Or are you "unfamiliar with this overwhelming power" because "Everything i feel is in this sword"?" The Gallagher simply answered "Nah, I'd teleport"
As someone who tried “creative writing”, throughout there youth to no success I can’t be mad or disappointed for a second at the last promise. There are B movie producers and B video makers who sell stuff for real money that is worse than last promise.
TLP did things that would get laughed at if people did it today. But TLP does get a pass because it was the first ROM hack ever finished, and was made by a then-teenager. It is under a Grandfather Clause now.
The last promise may be cringy, but by god does it have a heart, i can FEEL the love pumping into every second of this game. To hell with the complaint about the cringy writing, a love-made game is worth a thousand souless ones.

I remember trying this one when it was called "Tactics universe" and then picked up again when it became "The last promise". The hack for its time was pretty good, gotta give the kid credit for that. The bashing that it gets its undeserved.
I have a fun story about this game - during boarding high school, I wasn’t given consistent computer access, and especially download access, so couldn’t play this on emulator. So, I was actually able to get a cartridge for my DS Lite, which *was* allowed. It crashed a couple times, the autosave system worked so poorly that quicksaves to Resume Chapter were just save states so the last few actions could be reverted to an earlier turn, and in the 72-turn capture chapter attempting to seize did nothing so I got softlocked. But it was still a hell of a lot of fun. So yeah, am looking forward to this, have a lot of fond memories.
Maybe it is the nostalgia, but TLP will always have a special place in my heart. Not in small part because of your Lets Play. I have high hopes for tommorow!
I have a soft spot in my heart for projects that the devs were clearly incredibly passionate about, say what you want about the story or characters, but this kid obviously just loved FE and making the game almost single handedly with very few outside resources to help is just plain admirable. From the little I've seen it looks VERY charming.
I have no qualms with TLP and have been slowly playing through it the last year. At least Kelik can back up his words by being the undeniably strongest unit in the game to the extent you have like a 50% chance for him to either outright kill a boss or leave them so low your other units can mop up easy by midgame. Some bosses get so tuned up that he is the only character that doesn't get doubled.
I am in the middle of my own playthrough and they sure do tune up these bosses lol, everyone is a speed demon including the literal generals lmao. I am on the huge 72 turn limit siege map atm, have put it off for a while but will eventually get to clearing it.
One of the first roms i have played, sometimes story is pretty "cringe" I would say, but it remains in my heart as one of best roms and how cool it was that time when I completed it. ("May divine lightning shall pierce the sky's" - legend Siegfried).
Yes, it does, I replay The Last Promise every once in a while, I unironically like it more than the whole Gba trilogy and Kelik and Anakin are both top tier Fire Emblem lords.
Mangs, this video not just unlocked a memory. Do you remember the Midnight Sun hack? It actually came out as an original game about 2 years ago, it's called Path of the Midnight Sun and is a really nice indie RPG that you should play or stream sometime in the future.
Gotta respect anyone willing to blast solaris phase 2 without a shred of irony. "The present, the here and now you've stolen, IT'S TIME TO TAKE IT BACK!"
The Last Promise is one of the best if only because of how big, ambitious and good it is despite having been made by a bored teenager who didn't even had access to modern shit like FEbuilder. Also Kelik character's development is great, fight me
You just reminded me to play this hack again! I just stumbled on The Last Promise at about the same time I found out about yours and many other Fire Emblem content channels back in 2017.

As someone who does a lot of writing, Last Promise’s writing is cringy, cheesy, and sometimes downright idiotic at times but it’s not the worst thing ever. From what I remember, I was fine with the story until Lahar showed up. And also City of Lies. Anakin lost like, half of his IQ points in that chapter for some reason, lmao. Kelik is edgy but not too bad a character, just a bit cringy sometimes. The weight speech gets joked about a lot but compared to other monologues I’ve seen, it’s not too bad. It doesn’t feel like a real motive, especially when you compare it to the reason real life wars begin, like the World Wars. But all in all, people have different tastes. It’s up to you.

Glad to hear you give it a go! Maybe this could continue with other romhacks (like Order of the Crimson Arm or Eligor's Spear). On the matter of The Last Promise: I don't care if it's cringe, as a kingdom hearts fan I'm used to it, and it is imo a good game. The one thing I remember this hack for is that they made a GBA rendition of Silver Will for the final map. It’s a track from Trails In The Sky FC & SC it’s a very iconic track in Falcom’s discography and theme of certain favorite character. I wonder if the creator was a Trails fan or just thought it sounded cool?
people who call things cheesy these days tend to just hate wholesome and nice, though i never played it, im just too used to hearing the term cheesy, now bad cheese puns those are "Cheesy" lol, end my life, I might go fr the ROMs since original games like FE7 doesn't let you start with hard mode like sacred stones and up does
Oh yes. I recently beat it and I always forget this HAS A POST GAME, which is a little bit bonkers even today haha. It's dated, but enjoyable because of all what TLP means to Fire Emblem.
TLP was a fun romp with not too much changed from what made the FE Gba games so loved. Is it perfect? Hell no. But thats almost the exact reason why people love the GBA fe games, they're fun as hell to break open and try new stratagems with. Units are more unique, sprites are more animated, and the few bits of voice acting are extremely memorable. If anything, I just consider this the 4th gba FE game, for how much stuff it does without feeling like a whole different game.
Yeah, back in 2009, I was a good 5 years away from starting FE, let alone FE Rom hacks which were 7 years away. Back then I was a Pc-less Wii owner still in 3 Grade.
I stand by TLP remaining as one of the greats of romhacks. Is it of the same level of quality of expertise as modern hacks such as Black Knights, Andaron Saga or DLatMoL? No. But it is an important piece of Fire Emblem romhack history.
TLP was a very good rom hack. At times, the story felt underdeveloped, but other than that, I think it might be better than a couple of modern FE stories. It had overall solid gameplay, as well.
TLP is still unironically in my Top 5 favorite FE hacks. Really the only bad thing about it is the writing. Its gameplay is well balanced with a normal difficulty curve(something even modern day hacks cant do) and has lots of cool events like collecting all the emblem weapons and Shons secret quest for becoming a better unit.

I can't remember what playthough it was but Mangs said he'd do GhebFE at 1 mill subs. He also said no one will remember he said that.
@@DisplayThisOkay Probably because there's no way the FE fanbase would ever allow Mangs to reach 1 million subs lol.
The last promise walk so that vision quest can run
I would like to know what are the top5 rom racks in mangs opinion. Can u do a video or just answer my question @mangs?
As long as it's fun and competently made, having edgelord characters is fine.
Last Promise is one of my fav
The last promise is goated
TLP was a very good rom hack. At times, the story felt underdeveloped, but other than that, I think it might be better than a couple of modern FE stories. It had overall solid gameplay, as well.
Yooo I would love a TLP ironman, great idea Mangs
The answer is Yes
I’m still shocked that to this day, TLOB is STILL the only ROM hack with voice acting
Others also have some. But that shizz just takes too much of the limited rom space from what I know.
As said by the commenter above me, Having something like Voice Acting takes a significant chunk of the GBA's limited space of 32 MB.
Mangs : "the edgiest edgelord to have ever edged"
George Takei : "Oh Myyyyy!"
Simple answer: Yes
You're gonna carry that weight - Kelik
TLP is still unironically in my Top 5 favorite FE hacks. Really the only bad thing about it is the writing. Its gameplay is well balanced with a normal difficulty curve(something even modern day hacks cant do) and has lots of cool events like collecting all the emblem weapons and Shons secret quest for becoming a better unit.
I still have that on a usb somewhere, I remember playing for a while and I did like it, especially the different sub quests
Good luck to you mangs
0:53 Around that point, I was thinking to myself for this dialogue : Shut up Man! Get to the Story!
Yes.
My proof: Weedlord Anakin
that's all, he's the best, end of discussion
Who better to cringe with than the 🥚?
I dont care what anyone thinks Kelik is awesome
TLP is so cringe and edgy that it actually loops back to being to coolest thing ever!
A good start i would say
Keilk is such an edgelord.. Even the word cool is less cooler than Kelik
