I had my eyes on this hack for a while and got excited when I recently heard that it's finished now. This review just makes me more excited because I put quite a bit of trust in your opinion. Sucks that I'm playing like three Fire Emblems at the same time right now. I'll have to keep this one on the list for a while longer.
ay dani, just coming back to say i tried out TMGC because of this video, and this week i beat the game for the first time. all i can say is WOW. the characters, the down-to-earth and succinct yet nuanced dialogue, the map design, all the unique elements... this game was the most fun i've had playing fire emblem in a long time. without spoiling anything for others, the stand-out moments for me were the multiple-seize chapter (the one inspired by fe6 endgame), river mechanics in certain maps, the surprise late-game promotion of a certain character from their support conversation with simone, and when desmond reunites with his horse. all so memorable in their uniqueness and creativity. things i absolutely loved were the new support system (characters actually talking about plot events instead of pointless shallow topics?? gaining material boons based on their relationships??), the unique skills and weapon synergies, the PERFECTLY timed changes of pace when the story shifts to zeke and viridian (both times i felt my experience getting a little stale and the scale-downs really refreshed me), and how by the end of the game my team was so ridiculously overpowered BUT the enemies and late-game maps were proportionally overpowered and remained fairly challenging. i have to say the story ending felt a little anticlimactic for me. such a long build on the party's journey home just for everything to sort of... end, without a major twist. that said, the characters themselves were surprisingly endearing even if zeke is a whiny little b!tch sometimes. anyways just wanted to say THANK YOU so very much for highlighting this excellent hack. i had an amazing time playing it and i hope others will see your vid and be inspired to give it a go. keep up the great content.

Coming back to this to say I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel and watched the early parts of this video. I haven’t quite finished TMGC yet (currently in chapter 23), but this game definitely deserves all the praise you showered it with in this review. It’s just an absolutely beautiful experience. Thank you, Dani.
Always glad to stumble across more Romhack recommendations - given how huge the community's output is, a lot tends to get lost in the pile. Like this did! For me at least - will give this a shot this weekend, sounds great!
Dani, I am revisiting this video to say THANK YOU for the recommendation! I haven't been super exposed to Fire Emblem ROMHacks before, but I am a huge fan of the series and a long-time viewer. Your review here was so inspiring that I had to try it out. It sat unplayed for a week or so, but once I got started it does NOT disappoint. I'm only a handful of chapters in and having so much fun and am gripped by the story. Excited to check out your challenge run!
I've started it up, and am at chapter 7. There's a good bit to like, but there's one major thing holding it back that keeps it from being one of my favorites. First, the good: I think the complexity level of the mechanics is excellent. It's basic enough that strategy is more important than creating broken builds, but it has enough little extra mechanics to help make most units feel distinct, and help the game not feel as vanilla as the actual GBA games. The map objectives are nicely varied. The map design is above average for the series, better than 1-6, 8, 9, Awakening and Three Houses. I think 7s map design was a bit better, but it falls substantially short of Conquest and Engage. I have not found the plot or characters to be engaging at all. In particular, I feel like many members of the cast are just sarcastic parodies of standard. It just seems like somebody wanted to make fun of Fire Emblem characters, and did a really lazy job of it. Here's the big issue though: Risk management is almost completely absent from the game. Most weapons are about 20 hit higher than FE7, characters have consistently high skill, and terrain avoid bonuses are cut in half from the GBA games. I've found attempting to take advantage of terrain bonuses is just a waste of time, and the terrain enemies are on is irrelevant. Effective and reaver weapons are plentiful almost right from the start, and have substantial accuracy bonuses when used correctly. Even down on the weapon triangle, you still don't usually see below 80 hit for your units. This is on top of the game keeping the 2RNG system from the GBA engine. Enemies can toss hand axes at your sword wielding Jaigan Trickster, and still have something like a 70 hit rate (~80% true hit.) Now, don't confuse high enemy hit rate with a complaint the game is too hard. Actually, it's the opposite. Since battle outcomes are so reliable, your forecast of turn outcomes is near perfect. You plan on your units and your opponents units never missing. and that's what happens 90% of the time. 8% of the time an enemy will have an unlucky miss, 2% you'll have an unlucky miss. I don't think I've landed myself in a tight spot due to an unlucky miss, and I think I've had a unit in a sticky situation unexpectedly survive maybe 2-3 times. This makes the game less frustrating for sure. But whenever something goes wrong, it's because I've overlooked something. This is what you usually want sure, but I want to be thrown a curve ball now and then. One of the more substantial skills I've picked up in recent years attempting iron man runs is to take the moves with the least certain outcome early in player phase. If things go south, you've still got plenty of units to help you recover your position. If things go well, opportunities that may not have been available are now open. This just isn't a relevant skill in this game, and that makes me really sad. And while being player phase centric is generally a good thing, the tools you're given are too powerful. Effective weapons are auto-delete buttons, and your heavy hitters can delete any other enemies with minor chip damage support from your ranged units. Unlike Engage, these are simple tools, but they get the job done with extreme reliability, and never require having a backup plan. We all want Fire Emblem to play fair. The stakes are high, ambush spawns are garbage, thrones with 40 avoid are stupid, and enemy crits should be rare. You need to plan for the worst case scenario, but you also need to capitalize on opportunities for when the worst doesn't happen, and improvise when the worst does. How much RNG you want really is a matter of taste. But to me, having it removed to this extent makes the game feel hollow. That's my big rant. That being said, the game is definitely still good, and I'm happy to have it recommended to me. But I prefer most Fire Emblem games 6 and onward.
I really need to get into these ROMhacks. They, and this one specifically, look like a lot of fun. All the changes you talked about seemed like improvements and refinement of the FE series. And I skipped the part about the story, but hearing your priase makes me excited. I love a good video game story, and while Fire Emblem has its moments, they typically feel secondary to the gameplay.
The way you describe this it ends up reminding me of Vision Quest, although hopefully a lot better since I ended up dropping that one. Not a fan of combat arts or reclassing, but the rest of the praise does perk my interest. Definitely something I'll eventually check out. We Love FE11 Save Points. (and the tear ring saga save staff)
Reclassing is not part of the base game it's only in New game Plus and the game was not balanced around it (which is why it's not accessible to begin with)
FE and Pokemon hacks are so good. I've gotten back into them a few months ago and they're genuinely some of the best games i've played recently. Especially playing them on a phone emulator so I can play them in bed, at work, or in the bathroom.
This hack also to my knowledge has a self randomizing ROM version of itself mind you the version that's the self is a bit old but it works and is fun to mess around with if you ever got time to mess around with it I would recommend playing a few of the self randomizers of course after you play the original project Note: if you ever get stuck in the self randomizers press b on a unit that should access the debug menu if you ever need it
Ok I'm now at chapter B. So far solid. Jeff is peak and I'm enjoying it. Gameplay wise I still prefer conquest but it's good. Prolly top of B at the moment looking forward to get back to it.
Hi Dani, As just one humble viewer who possesses only the utmost correct opinions, I can definitively say that the best parts of this video were at 3:09, 6:01, 19:01, 21:17, and 22:04.
A week ago I decided to try this out after watching the video, my expectations were not that high, how foolish have I been, might never recover from the Alexis incident
I remember giving this hack a try and ended up giving up due to the save point system. It was on whichever map had the fire effect at the bottom. For whatever reason the emulator I use just always wants to crash whenever a hack uses it so that combined with the save point system meant I basically couldn’t progress through that chapter. Unfortunate since I really was enjoying the hack up until that point but it is what it is
The cool part of romhacks is that you can see choices that would never fly on an official release. A lot of design choices in FE are delicate compromises and concessions with the reality that each game is designed as somenone first tactics rpg The combat arts for example would be a super hard sell, mostly because the average player is way more likely to ignore a tool thats scarce, so through revisions with play testing it has a good chance of going back to the 3H version, even if i think it worse And working on passion projects like that let's you flex your creative muscles and make interesting choices, because you trust your player knows how the game works. A IS designer needs to take in consideration if a player is aware that armors have low rez even at the final boss. In roms you can design around the player planning warps
@@DaniDoyle shove for me feels pretty unnecessary, and usually indicates a design pattern I dislike. I enjoy playing fire emblem games slowly and defensively, and shove being a single tile of movement isn't usually very important. A lot of romhacks that include universal shove seem keen on encouraging you to rush rush rush almost every single map for optional rewards which incentivises shove and quick strategies for fast players, which forces me to play in a way I don't find fun (I don't mind rushing from time to time, just not all the time). Feeling too rushed was a reason I stopped playing vision quest. As for accuracy, it's partially because I'm a binding blade stan and like the rhythm it gives that game of having to make backup plans and think on the fly to deal with a sudden miss. But also, I think it's an interesting balancing factor. In games where hit is universally high, skill becomes a fake stat, and swords get a niche they wouldn't otherwise as accurate, reliable weapons. Without hit being something you're always keeping in mind, weapons end up with only might and weight as baseline balancing factors with stuff like crit and effectiveness falling more under special features. I'd be interested in a fire emblem game that cuts weapon hit but massively boosts the influence of skill and luck.
Interesting. You are, of course, valid in your opinion, but i find that shove is still useful even when turtling (when i want to train scrubs like Rolf on PoR I do it by turtling up, having him attack, then shoving him to safety). As for hit rates, while everyone will be fairly accurate, there are still niches for the VERY high skill units, like powerful but inaccurate weapons, or dodegy enemies (in the midgame some enemies come with a +100 avoid sword) similar to how COTBK handled the skill stat. Still also contributes to crit much more than in vanilla, which is nice too.
Not watching the video yet, since TMGC is on my to-play list cause ive already heard its really good. Also, have you finished Dream of Five yet? I really enjoyed that romhack
now that i heard that this is made by the same guy as the burger king mod i have to play that was one of the best fire emblem games i ever played the difficulty was perfect
After watching this I've played through to the end of chapter 4 on lunatic and was left wondering what your problem with chapter 3 you mentioned at 6:45 was? It didn't feel like much of a difficulty spike to me. My girlfriend is also playing the hack but on hard and she was struggling with the very start of the map so maybe it's that? My only personal problem with the map was the chest sitting out in the middle of the water that felt like it was taunting me for not looking up the secrets but also not being able to figure them out on my own.
The first two turns of chapter 3 are fairly overturned and highly growth dependent. Stefan is one HP level from being able to handle the village on his own, natasia is 2 strength levels from 1 rounding the ballista without firey blood, Blair is 1 speed level from 1 rounding the ballista without resolve, kenneth is 1 speed level from 1 rounding the ballista with flux. There is a reliable (albiet counter intuitive) strategy for 0% growths, but it still feels like a bit of a mess every time I play it. Not many units can survive the 2 ballista + any one attack from armors or cavs, which leads to awkward positioning, especially if you want to turn on firey blood or awaken resolve (Sam in particular has a really rough introduction, being unable to survive both ballista, meaning her best turn 1 is to shove someone else).
I mean, from which website did you download the HackROM? Not the latest patch (I already have the .ups file and don't really know how to use it) P. D: I've only played on MyBoy! simulator and I'm really a novice in terms of HackROMs and the like, so if you or someone could help me I would be grateful
I just finished the game actually. I liked it quite a bit, but I have several issues with it from a game design and story perspective both. The game has a lot of scenes where the logical flow of events is questionnable, with the cast making weird assumptions and decisions based off of those. It annoyed me a fair bit, enough to have the game drop out of my top 5 fe hack/fangames. As much as I like the mercenaries, arc, the circumstances leading to its conclusion feel wholly unjustified. From a mechanical perspective, the support system is an interesting idea that falls apart because of how annoying it is having to get into a map to check against support progress charts. Essentially, because each conversation is locked to a partical chapter/fight, it's too easy to miss out on progress. This is because of romhack limitations, surely, but an ideal implementation would give at least some lattitude for a large portion of these conversations. Map design-wise, the creator might like purge/sleep reinforcements a bit too much, but the player does get a lot of great long range tools in this game provided they raised bow units and Peggy (which they should).
I'm so sad I can't watch until I finish the game first 😭 I'll be playing a reviewing it for the FE Hacking Monthly magazine though, but from those opening couple of minutes, I expect peak

I remember giving this hack a try and ended up giving up due to the save point system. It was on whichever map had the fire effect at the bottom. For whatever reason the emulator I use just always wants to crash whenever a hack uses it so that combined with the save point system meant I basically couldn’t progress through that chapter. Unfortunate since I really was enjoying the hack up until that point but it is what it is
Loved this video! Will check it out. Do you have a top 3 fe gba rom hack list?
Ah yes, TMGC; The Morrow's Golden Corrow
I should take a page out of your book and also dm a friend about how much I hate a game
The cool part of romhacks is that you can see choices that would never fly on an official release.
A lot of design choices in FE are delicate compromises and concessions with the reality that each game is designed as somenone first tactics rpg
The combat arts for example would be a super hard sell, mostly because the average player is way more likely to ignore a tool thats scarce, so through revisions with play testing it has a good chance of going back to the 3H version, even if i think it worse
And working on passion projects like that let's you flex your creative muscles and make interesting choices, because you trust your player knows how the game works.
A IS designer needs to take in consideration if a player is aware that armors have low rez even at the final boss.
In roms you can design around the player planning warps
Not a fan of universal infantry shove or improving accuracy, but a lot of the other mechanics sound neat. On the list it goes
Interesting.. I'm curious, why is it you don't like high accuracy and shove? /Srs
@@DaniDoyle interesting! If I ever play tmgc, I'll consider if there's a way to properly integrate and enjoy shove with the way I play.
@@abbieburton2794hard agree with your accuracy point, but it sounds like Tmgc handles it a lot better than other mainline fe games
Not watching the video yet, since TMGC is on my to-play list cause ive already heard its really good. Also, have you finished Dream of Five yet? I really enjoyed that romhack
Does the game have a casual mode where you can turn off permadeath?
I think so? I Cant Remember Exactly
Follow up, it doesn't have casual mode because that would interfere with and break one of unique mechanics in the late game
now that i heard that this is made by the same guy as the burger king mod i have to play that was one of the best fire emblem games i ever played the difficulty was perfect
It has been a while since i used Roms. What do i have to keep in mind again when using Romhacks?
If you follow the link I posted there's instructions on how to set it up there
@@DaniDoyle Ok, thanks.
I went into the first few minutes of this video, then stopped watching to download the game. I'll come back when I finish it, but loving it so far
yooo you should talk about the Bloodlines hack
Knew the story was gonna be fire the moment I heard the code name was two milkmen go comedy omg
I will be trying this... but, just one note: your intro caused me to call it FE8 and Milk... and I will blame you for that for all time.
I have got to play this
Ehh... offense has been over promoted in recent FE games. I prefer the old school way that each unit had a niche, and it wasn't just offense focused.
Each unit does have a niche here, I'm not sure what you mean.
I rate this video 9 Dirks out of 10
Thanks, I wanted to look up what roms exist to inject onto my Wii U
What's the title of the video with the "peak" thumbnail at 0:20? Highly interested, also thank you for the earnest spoiler warning!

There I am Gary, there I am!
Squidward Moments
I played a couple of chapters, the hack's fun. Also alexis
How can I install the "base" game? Because I'm only downloading the patch and I would really like to try it, please
Patching instructions should be in the post linked below
I mean, from which website did you download the HackROM? Not the latest patch (I already have the .ups file and don't really know how to use it)
P. D: I've only played on MyBoy! simulator and I'm really a novice in terms of HackROMs and the like, so if you or someone could help me I would be grateful
It's fire emblem 8. I cannot legally tell you where to acquire a copy of that
I just finished the game actually.
Welcome to my kingdom!
Tmgc is peak as peak
The morrows golden Alexis
I'm so sad I can't watch until I finish the game first 😭
I'll be playing a reviewing it for the FE Hacking Monthly magazine though, but from those opening couple of minutes, I expect peak
strange, i have never heard of this hack before and im big into fire emblem hacks, have played at least 50 different ones, watch fee3 yearly and generally im aware of all the commonly known best ones. gotta look into this one
your video confinced me to try it, thank you =)
since andoran sage i was looking for a new hack
You get a recruitable flying eye, so of course its automatically the best fe game ever.
😂lmao warior shaking his butt made me forget how trash today is. So im having trouble with my Android getting these roms. Is there a tutorial video somewhere on RUclips that may help me out. Ga ve up on thracia so ill just give this one a try. Getting everything into one damn folder is somehow driving me nuts!😢
I'm torn between playing this or cerulean crescent next (i will get to both eventually)

No i miss two milkmen go comedy.
Which romhack is this?
The Morrow's Golden Country. It Is Linked In the description
FE7 is the best fire emblem to do first. that is the majority's consensus
This video is about TMGC
Player phase gameplay?
No BS procs??
Loads of versatile units/resources to overcome loads of powerful foes and obstacles???
Ngl, I didnt think a hack called Two Milkmen would be a fleshed experience, but I am SOLD
Two milkmen go comedy? Is the creator a Virtue's Last Reward fan or something lol
Uh maybe idk
I was playing Eligor's Spear but looks like i have to drop it

I have downloaded, I have patched, I am playing *salute*
I feel like such a stupid bozo for having to ask this, because I honestly have never messed with FE hacking before, but...
... Which game is this supposed to patch over? I'm going to GUESS FE8, but...
Yes, fe8
Im not really familiar with how to get fe romhacks. Can they be gotten on pc at all or is that not posdible?
Yes, theu are for PC, you can download rhe patch from the link in my description, plus it should have patching instructions
Is there a patch without the skills?
No. They are a core part of the gameplay.
How do you download and play rom hacks?
There's a link in the description, were you can download the patch. The patch will contain instructions on how to install it
