    Don’t know whether this has been mentioned before but You really need earphones to hear all Led Zeppelin has to offer. The studio version allows them to layer the instruments. You can’t get that live. But they are incredible live.

      We used to stand someone up in the middle of the room with headphones on and eyes closed.
      Eventually they would start swaying and we'd have to catch them before they fall down.

      No. Thats worst advice. When one listens so clisely you are hearing too much into the edits and such. Two channel stero. Not computer speakers is the way Zep is suppose to be listened to.

    *Todd* OK...... "after" watching your wife's response and her request to see them live, *PLEASE* *PLEASE* *PLEASE* show her *LIVE* "The song remains the same/Rain song from the 1973 Madison Square Garden" concert.! My reason bro, she will see the hard charging instruments and Robert in The Song remains the same and then..... the melodic sounds of The Rain Song interspersed with clips of "Roberts fantasy segment" from the movie The song remains the same.! You GOTTA DO IT BRO.! IT WILL SHOW HER EVERYTHING.! Case closed, G.O.A.T. band forever.! Trust and "Old Head" on this..... *David* .....

    Remember.. this is 1969… experimentation in music and recording was everywhere… it was an exciting time. Stereophonic records and equipment was really introduced in the early 60’s on a mass scale. We listened to music on little tinny transistor radios with one earpiece plugged in if we were lucky.

    Zep has a lot of "heartbreak" songs just like the Blues, which inspired their music. Dee, first off, great to meet you and welcome to the Zep family. Second, the instrument that was playing with the percussion during the middle part is something called a Theremin. It looks like an aerial and creates oscillating tones depending how close/far your hand is to it and the pitch is controlled by a dial on a console. One of the many things Zep is known for is their insane ability to improvise throughout a song. They never played a song the same way twice in concert. As far as watching a live performance, different RUclipsrs seem to be able to post them more often these days (don't quote me on that, though) so perhaps you'll both get to watch one.

    • @glennburch1081
      @glennburch1081 2 года назад +2

      Joe Bonamassa has done some work with the Theremin in recent times. Its a trip to watch him play it with, as you have described, the placement of his hand within the vicinity of this instrument. I did not know a Theremin was used in this song, thanks for bringing that to light.

    • @henriettaskolnick4445
      @henriettaskolnick4445 2 года назад +1

      @@glennburch1081 Hi Glenn, nice to meet you. Believe it or not, the Beach Boys have a Theremin on their song Good Vibrations, which was released in 1966. It is definitely a different, other-worldly sound and was often used to create eerie sound effects for sci-fi movies back in the day.

      It's tough to watch some live Led Zeppelin because of what the great man above described. They do it differently every time... That's one of the reasonsy parents and I don't love the live all the time. We love the studio recordings.... This may be the best rock song ever done!!!! Still my fave is No Quarter by them.... It is less a rock song and more bluesy.... Or I'm not sure... Hard rock... This is the best ever done!

    When I was growing up with this music as a young teenager I did not realize how special and talented this band was to be able to create the myriad of sounds they played and their ability to connect it to your emotions of real life drama such as this song about making love. Now that I am older and I can draw a comparison between todays music and Led Zeppelins music back in the day, 50 years ago, I have a whole new appreciation and understanding of how truly great they were. Loved your comments. Thanks for helping to keep music like this alive.

    Now, for a real treat, try listening to the song that Zeppelin snagged this from. It's called " You need lovin' " by the Small Faces. Robert Plant was a Faces groupie and he took almost all Steve Marriott's vocal stylings verbatim. The similarity's will drop your jaw.🤠👌

    Chod, you got it so right from the start of the channel, audio first - no videos. Giving just the music a chance to weave it's magic first, the way it was first intended and where the artists had put all their creativity and time. Live performances are a whole different experience again, and another great way to connect, but still more enjoyable if you've already absorbed the music. All the rest is just marketing, even official promo videos rarely offer any new insight, they may offer an interesting take and be an artform in their own right, but they're more often than not just a complete distraction from the heart of the music. Love your channel Chod, and your enthusiasm, eclecticism and open mindedness.

  • @wompa70

    Absolutely right. Robert Plant can sing like nobody’s business. But each member of the band can play their instruments just as well. And none of them have egos too big (with each other) to keep the others from showing how good they are.

    Want to emphasize your point: when we got these albums, they produced pre-recorded MUSIC. The live albums were few and far between. My friend and I used to have to stay up way past our bedtimes (we were in college and working nearly full time as well) to see Led Zeppelin's THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME at the MIDNIGHT MOVIES, which started at - midnight - and ended after 2AM. That's IT for a live experience. Even John Lennon claimed he was a "record man," and preferred records over live performances of the artists he listened to. So good on you for listening to the studio versions first.

  • @heliotropezzz333
    @heliotropezzz333 2 года назад +4

    I think the band's 'bad relationship' lyrics at this time, often reflect themes that are found in the blues. They did later write more from personal experience, but not much at this stage (LZII album). There is a song on the album, a quieter ballad style song, called 'Thank You' that Robert Plant wrote for his wife.

    I don't think I've ever heard a "bad" Led Zeppelin song, but definitely she should hear -Heartbreaker, in my time of dying, black dog. Never mind, there are too many to list. Just go with every album, one by one. It will take some time, but it will be worth it!!!

    good call on the live vs studio debate. not only for the reasons mentioned but also you can see just how much they improvise in concert. they never played the same song twice, their live shows were totally dependent on how they felt that particular day. one thing I find amazing is how one member can just take off on their own improvised direction and the rest of the band just immediately follows flawlessly.
    note: if you really want to experience zep like us old fogies' did you can forget about cd's and downloads and go straight to vinyl.

    The middle section was not the guitar. Jimmy Page has a crazy electronic device called a Theremin that he manipulates his hand next to it , without touching it, and it does some crazy electronic noise feedback, and that’s what you hear. There are videos out there you can see him use it.
    It’s not one of my favorite sounds, but he sure uses it in a cool way. Trippy for sure.

    Give her some Ten Years After "I'd Love to Change the World". I think both of you would enjoy that

    Violin bow was used by Jimmy Page for that spacey sound.

    If Yes is your favorite band, you must like Progressive Rock. I love Yes and Rush. I recommend checking out Camel. Trust me; start out with "Lunar Sea" (Lunacy) off the "Moodmadness" album. Also recommend the albums "Mirage" and "Flight of the Snowgoose"

    Jimmy Page used a violin bow on his guitar to produce some of the great sounds on this track.

    Context is everything and anyone who was anybody(!) back then was into experiencing psychedelics and cannabis. ("All the squares go home!"-Cynthia Robinson) Most genres of music were positively affected by that culture. Psychedelic Music this is!

    This was the remastered version, which makes it easy to hear what they were doing. Which was a lot. The guitar can definitely make that sound (like a car or airplane) if your name is Jimmy Page and you know how to use that pick to slide down the string. I never could reproduce it like that, but my name is not Jimmy.

    Thank goodness the Mother ship album does not get blocked. Live also. I think Kashmir live from Celebration Day performance would be interesting to her.

    It's really not repetitive. This song actually has a story line and it's all the act of lovemaking from beginning to finish. There was a thing such as censorship, and unlike today, they couldn't just come out and say it. It had to be subtly suggested and acted out through music and suggestive lyrics. With that in mind, give the song another listen.
