Your videos have helped me a lot , but I just wonder why you don't use live paint tool instead of pentool. Thanks!

There are a few reasons I avoid live paint. First it isn't possible to add follow up effects to specific elements of the drawing. Second in the real world of architecture drawings are always edited throughout the design process. The method I use in these videos allow for the easiest integration of a new AutoCAD or Revit file that is possible. It may have taken slightly longer to use the pen tool in the video than live paint but from experience I can tell you in the long run, I saved much more time by making editing easier.

Could you please specify what those follow up effects are? Can you provide an example when using live paint takes longer than pentool?
I'm getting to know illustrator, so I just want to know what are the advantanges of pentool over live paint. Thanks for the help!

I can't list everything. There are too many effects and to many drawing types. In some ways you have to trust me. I developed these methods as a professional, now I also teach and I've seen many students who don't take the advice and end up realizing they made the mistake by not doing so. Here is one example, let's say you drew a floor plan in AutoCAD or Revit and brought it into Illustrator to render. After showing it to a client or professor or whomever you realize some edits are needed. If you used live paint you have to re render the floor plans completely or go though a series of annoying steps to break the live paint and retain useful parts. If you use the pen tool instead you can build the drawing in layers making it easy to replace the updated plan in Illustrator and editing just the part that needs to change while retaining the work that was not changed. It is much simpler to edit. Professionally these kinds of edits happen over and over again, any good designer spends more time on iteration and edits than initial design therefore making the drawing easy to edit is the smart thing to do. Now imagine this is a more complicated drawing like a site plan and the benefits of pen tool are only increased. Actually if you go and find my videos on site plans you will see exactly what I'm talking about, you can not do that drawing as a live paint.

Michael Tweed Thanks for quick response! Now I see the point of using pen tool is that you want to build the file into different layers. But after using live paint, I can use select>same > fill color, then copy and paste into another layer.
I have watched your videos on creating site plan and they helped me create a site plan for an area of 30 houses. Very much appreciated.

What to do if my walls start disappearing when I’m adding the color into it ??????

First, if you haven't finished the shape of the floor, keep going around and see what it looks like when it is done. The walls will disappear in part of the while the floor is being drawn. If after the floor is drawn there are some walls missing, which is sometimes the case, then there are two options. Either use compound path to make a whole in the color of the floor at the wall, or make a new layer on top of it all and redraw any missing walls.

Ain't it much faster if you use the magic wand tool?

That's a good question. There are always multiple ways to do most things in adobe software. While there are faster ways to fill a floor plan than the way I do so here, the reason I selected this method for this video are two fold. (Speed was not one of the things I was concerned about.) The fastest way to do this would probably be using live paint. The problem with live paint is that the shapes they create are not as flexible as regularly drawn objects. Meaning you can't use many of the other tools on them without first converting them into regular shapes. While you can turn live paint into standard objects, you have to go through a few steps to do so. I myself may choose to do it this way. However, these videos are made for specific assignments for a class. I find that students will not go through these extra steps and as such end up limiting themselves, at least in early assignments such as this. Which is the root of the second reason for doing it this way. This assignment is to teach students how to us Illustrator, and learning how to draw your own shapes is important. Learning how the Pen tool works is key to using Illustrator well. As a practice introduction assignment I find the method I use in this video to be ideal. However, if you are comfortable doing the task another way, I encourage you to use that method or experiment with any other method that works.
