  • This was a long drive and we finally reached the charming destination of Port Edward. Relieved and happy that we arrived safely we decided that we would head to the Wild Coast Sun, where we enjoyed a light dinner before returning to our accommodation for a well-deserved rest, excited about the adventures that lay ahead. With a late start, we set out to explore the world's smallest desert, the enchanting Red Desert, followed by a mesmerising visit to the stunning Old Pont Holiday Resort which was simply breathtaking. Returning to the Wild Coast Sun in the daylight unveiled its true splendour, and we later ventured to Port Edward's picturesque beach where I felt the warm water of the Indian Ocean. Our visit to Port Edward was a captivating and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #portedward

Sonia has always felt at home in KZN, she spent so much time there with her family when she was a little girl, so this trip was both an exciting and emotional one for her. 🚙🥰 We're so happy that you can also see what this province has to offer and what it's all about. It has changed a lot in the last 20 years, so a lot of of it was kind of new to us as well.

I also stayed at San Lamier as an adult, I was so disappointed about 4yrs ago, also heard about it alot as a child. Port Edward is a large Town I thought it was small, its interesting, the beaches seem to be laid out all the same, grass around the teahouse, some have fresh water pools , walk down steps to get to the beach to swim, Port Edward, Margate, and St Michaels, spent lots of holidays at St Michaels on Sea with my folks. Thanks for this trip!!

I get the feeling whoever built that holiday resort at the Port Edward beach doesn't like Green Mambas. They certainly "cleaned the place up" extremely thoroughly - including the bush that was "getting in the way of the view" down by the beach, I suspect.
But anyway, "Welcome to the Jungle". :D

Hi guys what a surprise one day the dry Free state to tropical paradise now now that blows my mind like two different countries drone footage really brilliant the smallest desert crazy surrounded by lush vegetation lovely orchards then the forest lord of the rings with the strang walls of goblin rest unbelievable top notch holiday resort tree house and thatched chalets perfect. Loved the shape of the iron bridge glad you got to experience the wobble of the bridge a favourite pass time a small kid we used to stand on tower bridge were the two half's meet and wobble about great fun .the hotel was 5 star tranquil vibe the amazing wood work on the ceiling reminds me of Thailand. I was lucky to drive through the transkei but never went to a casino.i could almost smell the sea air at the beach stunning views amazing waves the monument was so interesting 500 survived the wreck but only 21 got to Mozambique I'm glad you both enjoyed memories of your visit 20 years ago it's funny I've been to a few places that grow bananas and they always have blue bags ?? Hi Curtis, Sonia and Dusty,
I am so enjoying your videos, they have inspired me to some exploring of my own. It was a somewhat impromptus trip to Port Edward from my home in Umkomaas. Port Edward is a town I have never been to. Saturday morning I ventured out after having stayed overnight on Friday. went and saw the Red Desert , the morning was cloudy and there had been rain overnight and there was still rain in the air.
As luck would have it as I got over the rise to enter the desert proper it started raining quite hard, I turned back and half way back to the car it stopped so I turned around and went back to explore some more. So interesting to see the contrast between the desert and the green vegetation.
I ventured over the bridge into Eastern Cape . I wanted to get a side view picture of the bridge so I used Google maps to locate an ideal vantage point. It was at the Riverside Bar and water sports at the foot of bridge. I went on a cruise up the river and saw the old pont entry and exit points on the river.
The next day I went and saw the lighthouse . Loved the miniature light lighthouses on the gate posts. To me what was significant was the the fact that the miniature lighthouses were the colours of naval navigation lights. Red on the left for port and right on the right for starboard. This got me thinking of why they used those two specific colours and I had a train of thought about an amusing anecdote about an exchange between a light housekeeper and a ship captain. .
    This copied from another website
    QUOTE
    US Battleship and Canadian Navy
An American battleship ship is traveling at night around Canada when the radio comes on. It says "Canadian Navy to American Battleship, we have detected that you are on a collision course with us. Please alter your course 5 degrees north by north-east to avoid collision, over."
The ship's captain looks at his crewmates, gives them a wink, and picks up the radio. He replies, "American Battleship to Canadian Navy, you are on a collision course with us. Please alter *your* course 5 degrees south by southwest to avoid collision. Over."
The radio comes back on. "Canadian Navy to American Battleship, we can't do that. Please alter your course 5 degrees north by north-east to avoid collision. Over."
The captain takes the radio and, in his best show of authority, says "American Battleship to Canadian Navy. We are the USS Lincoln, one of the largest naval vessels in the entire US navy, and escorted by multiple support ships. If you do not alter your course, we will be forced to defend ourselves to avoid collision. Over."
The radio goes silent for a moment.
Finally, it comes back on. "Canadian Navy to American Battleship. We are a lighthouse. Your call. Over."
    UNQUOTE
Also visited a little motor Museum at Munster outside Port Edward on the way home . The most unique exhibit being a 100 year old Ford Model T delivery van
    .

I'm not entirely sure if I'll travel through the Transkei again, the roads are just too wild and full of vehicles, people and animals. If it were still operational, we would've just gone back-and-forth for the fun of it! 🚙😁 I'm glad you enjoyed our video!

What an intriguing place. Never been here before. I misread the desert in your title as dessert! 😆Looks a very comfortable place where you stayed over. And a gorgeous garden. A tiny desert in the middle of nowhere. That is amazing. The tree tunnels are so pretty, and I was just thinking Constantia, when you said it, Sonja! The holiday resort by the river is so pretty. So glad you took a walk on the bridge, it is so magnificent. Love the shapes of the trees, some of them look like they are dancing.

Our accommodation was very comfortable and those gardens were next-level! 🌳🏡 The plant life was just so intensely green and absolutely everywhere and you're right, the trees do look like they're dancing, even if there is only a little breeze. The red sand was quite something, I never expected to find that in a coastal town on the South Coast of KZN. 😳🏜️

By far your best travel video so far, hope you guys are going to travel the whole south coast of Natal up to Durban. I highly recommend so. Kwazulu Natal is by far the most beautiful province in SA. The Draakensburg also awaits. you will have to relocate, enabling you to get vast coverage of the province, LOL. You won't want to leave.

We visited many more places along the way, which we look forward to sharing with you. We have thrown the idea around of relocating to KZN, but we're not quite ready to say goodbye to beautiful Strand just yet. 😍 We haven't thought about dates for the next KZN trip. It takes a huge amount of planning since it's so far away. There is no denying how beautiful the coastal areas are, we loved being back after such a long time. 🌊🌳

There is more of the Red Desert sands further south of Port Edward into the Eastern Cape also close to the coast at an area called Xolobeni The Red Sands are known to contain Titanium and this area has been in the news over many years where a large Australian Mining company wanting to extract the mineral and the local population do not want their area touched as it would not only spoil the beauty of the Wild Coast but disrupt their traditional livelihood . A quick view of Google Earth will show the Port Edward Red Desert and moving down the coast to Xolobeni. The red sand area is larger than the Port Edward Red Desert.
