What Did We Think of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe?

- Today, Regena and I are spending a few hours with this Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Overland Edition and while this is not the more capable TrailHawk edition which has more aggressive tires and a few extra off-road features, we were pretty surprised by how capable this Overland edition is. This has an inline 2 liter turbo engine and is a plug in hybrid. There is a large battery and 2 electric motors that help this Jeep deliver 375 horsepower and 470 pound feet of torque. Because it is a plug in hybrid, you can drive in all electric mode for up to 25 miles and the grand Cherokee has an impressive 470 miles of range…. Great for those long trips. This has multiple terrain modes and an adjustable air suspension that can allow for up to 10.9” of ground clearance. The one we got the keys today is Velvet Read Pearl and has both the Luxury Tech package and off-road package and after spending some time getting to know the Jeep, we share our first impression’s.

The Trailhawk in Hydro Blue Pearl is stunning and you can get it with all the bells and whistles with the Trailhawk as well plus the disconnectable front sway bar and you can get it in the 4Xe as well !!! Happy Wife is a Happy Life Doc !!! I almost purchased a GC L Overland but two days later the wife had emergency gallbladder surgery so that put a damper on the parade.
You know that Overlanding is becoming popular when Jeep starts putting it on Cherokees. Had a blast at EJS, thanks guys!
We did too and it was great meeting you! 😊
This is the review I have been waiting for! Consider me sold, I am keeping my JK for the fun stuff, but this is a great compromise for long road trips and a daily driver. Thanks for the great work.
I have a 2019 GC and I love how smooth the ride is! It also handles just as good in the snow filled driveway as my husband’s rubicon.
Looks like a very nice combo vehicle. Great for around town and decently off road capable. Thanks for the review. Until next time... Travel safe.
More his and hers reviews. You could be onto something with this.
Having owned a 2018 GC Trailhawk for 2 years running, I can confirm your impressions, Brad and Regena. It's fabulous on the highway and long drives and more capable offroad than most give it credit for. It's not a rock crawler and I would not consider taking it on difficult trails. Having said that, I've overlanded in Baja, Colorado, Moab, Death Valley and the Mojave Rd with zero issues. On the Mojave, my buddy with the 4runner had to go find gas midway to finish and I did the entire trail in 4W low and finished with a quarter tank, so range is a plus. Do I want a Rubi or Gladiator for more offroad capability? You betcha, but with this being my daily, it's a good combo.
This is a great use case for the "overlander" segment of offroading. It's pretty much what we do, just in an LR3 and LR4.
I have the Overland Grand Cherokee, for a combination daily driver that can handle some off roading it is incredible. The ride is way better than a 4runner or Wrangler. Very luxurious and comfortable. Can handle plenty of regular off road stuff but not a massive rock crawler. Though I've seen a few guys rock crawling the Trailhawk on RUclips. I just did a long multi state drive in it and it was so comfortable with so much technology I actually enjoyed the long drive.
Thank you for a great review. I have the 2.0L turbo (non electric version) in my 2020 Rubicon JLU and love it. Even adding a lift and 37's didn't seem to affect the perceived power and torque. Adding the 4xe option to the Grand Cherokee line is a great idea and I think my wife would really like it. Thanks again for doing this review.
Very nice. Love the color. Great review. I tried to convince my mother to get one but she settled for a BMW X3 M40i, more to her taste. You guys definitely should get one. Regina deserves a great daily driver
I’m looking forward to a trail hawk 4xe coming to your garage soon! Great video!
Perfect timing - my wife was just looking into the Trailhawk version.
Dude. You are totally getting one. If mama's happy, everyone is happy. 👍
Great quick review.
Brad & Regina, thank you for this review. I know it’s not your normal content, but your opinion is definitely appreciated. The GC is a great vehicle for light-duty off-roading, camping, and overlanding in my opinion. This past weekend, I took my son on a 14 mile dirt trail in NC to camp and hike. 4Lo wasn’t necessary, but having it made some mildly difficult downhill sections easier. I think the Trailhawk would be a great overlanding vehicle and would compete well with the Bronco or the 4Runner. I kinda hope Regina gets her want, but maybe a Trailhawk with the disconnecting swaybar and we get to see a GC Trailhawk on TrailRecon soon! Thanks!
I have a 2017 Trailhawk pretty much loaded and a gladiator that’s pretty built. My wife would rather drive the grand Cherokee or take it on trips any day of the week. She’s always comparing it to her Lexus 450 which the GC is a close second. I took the GC out back on Elephant Hill with no real issues.
As is always the case when the two of you evaluate Jeeps, I respect your opinions far more than anyone else on the Internet and in the printed media. Thank you very much. P.S. My wife loved her 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland diesel. Its weak point was with the diesel exhaust particulate filter. P.P.S. I took delivery of my 2012 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon ten years ago this past Sunday. My Rubicon is THE most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Andy McKane, 19 April 2022.
We have the new Grand Cherokee L Overland with some nice tech in it and we love it for road trips and easy "off" road. Comfy ride, loads of room but suffering through some quirks. We however like the vehicle.
I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee base model and that jeep impressed me the Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2011 to present are very capable all around great suvs I’ve taken mine to New York and recently to Moab and back with no issues which was 3400 miles and I plan to purchase a 2018 grand Cherokee trailhawk soon!!thanks for the review and showing this
Hard to imagine that this Jeep, FULLY loaded with most off road and luxury options/packages, cost only a bit more than my my '21 JLU, that didn't even come with the steel bumper package or headliners. Like you guys said, it's not an overland beast like we're used to, but is a much better road trip vehicle and super plush. Hmmmm :). Great video, as always.
I was watching the Trailhawk 4Xe, and looks awesome. But since been watching your power wagon, I think that will be my next one. After I got done with my 19 GC Trailhawk.😉
Nice review and nice Jeep.
We have a 2012 Grand Cherokee Limited that the wife daily drives. I lifted 2" and added aggressive mud tires. It's great, on and off road. We did all of Fins N Things and Hells Revenge with no problems except ground clearance now and then. We are going to Colorado with it this fall to do Black Bear, Imogen and Ophir. Really excited.
I think the best line of the whole video is Regina’s “It’s got the charger in dillybob ... yeah that.”
☺ I've totally got a grasp on highly technical terms!
Love my WK2 Trailhawk, it’s more than capable off-road, I did valley of the moon in it, including the gatekeeper. On road, drives like a sports car compared to other off-road capable options.
We had a Range Rover Discovery 1st gen when our kids were young and before that a Bronco 2.
To her Grand Cherokee , Ford Explorer etc was a mommy van.
The one time we bought one it was how soon can we trade it in.
We traded it for the Discovery.
Now on our second Wrangler with an FJ Cruiser in between.
Of course our kids are grown and as always if they don't like the back seat they can walk.
My wife and I own a JKUR and a JKR, both reasonably modified. We also have a 2020 GC and love it. SHould also mention that we don't baby the GC. We are course marshals as Sweep at a number of TSD and Stage rallies, so it sees its share of rough roads and long distances.
I think Regina is due for a nice upgrade. My daughter and Son-in-law have a 2020 GC Trailhawk, and love it.
My wife just bought one, but only a limited 4x4. She absolutely loves it. Waiting to see how dirt trail/dune worthy it is.
I really enjoyed this review, thanks again. Another suggestion can you start doing His and Her reviews on things and also garage coffee for his and her just an idea. Thanks again.
My wife has a 2019 Grand Cherokee and boy does it feel like a sports car compared to my Gladiator. Its an amazing vehicle, she's super happy with it and I bet these new models are even better.
We needed a new car. I tried to get my wife to go into a GC but she opted for the Cherokee TrailHawk. She leased it for 3 years and then turned it in. I tried to get her to go into a GC again but a used Wrangler TJ presented itself and we bought that instead. NO bells and whistles in the Wrangler TJ and she misses that. She also feels we need to go electric soon. Hoping that this GC 4xe Overland Edition will have the same reaction on her as it did on Regena. Thanks to you both for your impressions.
My wife bought a 2022 compass trailhawk and I'll tell you it's awesome. Wish my gladiator had some of the features lol btw heated and COOLED seats!
It look like a Great family vehicle love the jeep
Plus they are very good in the snow.
Those bright blue tow hooks are a bit out of place on the Overland which has been the more luxurious off road capable trim. They originally showed the Overland 4xe with chrome hooks. I definitely would prefer chrome or black hooks paired with this trim level.
You kiddingly mentioned the lumbar support you could press fast to make it massage, but that button above the seat position save is for the massaging seats🤣😎. Great video as always, love your videos🤙🏻. We own the 3 row overland and absolutely love it for our family with 3 kids, it’s a great compliment to our JLUR in the garage.
What?! It really does massage? Now, I have to have this!!! 😄
@@regenakowitz yep ours has it, so nice on road trips or a long commute home with the seat heater on!
Great vidjia Bread. Did you like this hybread more than your wrangler hybread?
You mentioned moving the seat controls for a seat massager, the button right above the memory buttons is for messaging seats! Also hope you get to try the trailhawk in the future! Love the videos BTW!
This vehicle is even more amazing than I realized! Now I REALLY want one!!! 😄
Great looking vehicle.
I have a 2015 GC but if to get one the Overlander would be the one for sure wow bells on her wow!!!!!!!!!!!
I think most of us would be happy if we could could actually buy all these. If the dealer actually had cars on their lots again would be nice
We love our Grand Wagoneer. We get tons of compliments.
I just placed an order for a new 2023 laser blue pearl compass with the 2.0l turbo engine and 8spd 4x4, I can't wait to finally have it built would have gone for 4xe but it makes the cost too much for me at this time, maybe next purchase.
Have owned 4 GCs over the years & 3 Wranglers … all excellent. There are less & less dirt roads & trails in my area, as Urban sprawl has expanded radically. It means that a Wrangler no longer makes sense, as I’d have to do a road trip of 2+ hours just to go off pavement (beyond short file trails).
WOW!!What a nice car!
Exactly.
I’ve been waiting for an actual off-roader to get behind the wheel of one of these and shine some light on the capabilities of the Grand Cherokee. My WK2 has gone everywhere I’ve wanted it to. Is it a Wrangler on 1-tons and 40s? No but the WK2 tows up to 7200lbs, gets awesome gas mileage, has plenty of tech and can hit some really good trails. I’ll wait to see if Jeep fixed the reliability issues of the quadralift but a 4xE Trailhawk might be in my future.
What are your thoughts on the new Ineos grenadier ? Looks to be a great overland rig .
Like it or Not, this is our future. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, it won't be long before you won't be able to buy a ICE vehicle.
Regina, I am sold too. I need a towing vehicle that can go also off road in the Tahoe region. (Yes, excluding Rubicon trail)
While having a good gas mileage as a commuter.
You have the Bronco which fits the bill for your lifestyle. Would you sell it for the Grand Cherokee? And which one is more comfortable on the trails?
I think this is an amazing car camping vehicle....not extreme overlanding, but you can do some trails and car camp with this.....Wish I could afford one to compliment my ecodiesel gladiator
As a Wisconsinite I’m very interested in night vision option. We hit a deer last year and I almost t-boned one last week. I wonder to what extent night vision might help and how wide it’s field of vision is.
There's always room for another Jeep!
Do you think it would get any damage doing broken arrow or Schnebly hill road?
All hail the trailhawk!
Lol Mother's day hint hint . Iove getting the wife "gifts"...that I work on 10 hrs over the weekend and break to fix later.
Is there a new Jeep Grand Cherokee in the future? Regina was hinting pretty hard. She will stop telling you how much she loves it when she has one sitting in the driveway for her. 😁😁
I wish you could have talked more about the powertrain and the transition from EV to ICE while driving. I understand this is a bit rough and disappointing in daily use.
What was your mpg on the trip?
Brad, I think you better find a space in the driveway, because Regena is going to be driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the very near future I suspect.
Is the Trailhawk capable of doing Colorado trails like the Alpine Loop?
How much is the battery replacement ?
Time to get Regena a trail hawk.
For sure if we were to get one it would be a Trailhawk edition.
Wishing they would have added the 4XE to the "L". I have 4 kids who can't all fit in my JLU anymore so been looking at the GCL. If the 4XE was optioned in the L, I would place an order. Guessing it's just a matter of time.
If I didn’t know better, I’d say you have been watching my videos (trail ratings & SUV off-roading) 😉. Nice review!
Hmm
I wonder if this is as reliable as your Wrangler 4XE?
Happy wife happy overlanding! 😊
One other thing that this vehicle has is the ability to be flat towed. Jeep is one of the few manufacturers to offer this and it makes a compelling and versatile vehicle if you want to flat tow it behind an RV.
Bard her Yellow jeep needs a friend.....doesn't it? Nice review. Now if Jeep could only get it's all electric range extended.
LOL! I may not have a choice about her Jeep getting a friend. I look forward to more range in the future.
@@TrailRecon Brad I always knew you are a smart husband and dad. I drove the Grand Cherokee with the 3rd row it wasn't a 4xe it had the V8. Oh have you see the new version of yellow for the JL? Don't let her see it......
Too bad the Grand Cherokee 4xe did not come out before the Wrangler 4xe. I probably would have bought one. I hope these do not have some of the issues that some people are having with the Wrangler 4xe. I have had great luck with mine so far, knock on wood. Great video, btw! :D
Are you sure this one had the off road package? The wheels don’t look like the correct ones with the OR package.
Not to mention the OR pack has a "trail rated" badge on both fenders, which this one doesn't. I mean it's a BIG difference in capability between a offroad pack equipped version and one without. An Overland with that pack is basically the Trailhawk but without the Trailhawk bumpers and swaybar disconnect.
Looks good but jeep's advertised lease special are bait and switch
It's a killer formula. It checks ALL the boxes for me from tow capacity, fuel economy, visuals, comfort features, range, bells&whistles, and offroad capability. But I have heard some pretty bad things about the WL Grand Cherokee and even those WS Wagoneers. From what I've heard it's mostly the electronics and mainly the interior electronics. It just doesn't bode well to me that they're this unreliable out the gate.
Your lucky it doesn't come in Yellow, I think you would have to make room in that drive way. You better hurry up and put a blower on her JL it sounds like she loves the power👌🏁
👍👍
All that chrome needs to go!!
Regina needs a V8 trailhawk, she has been wanting more power lately.
If you ever decide to sell your yellow jeep to get a cherokee, let me know. I love your yellow jeep.
I don't think she'll ever get rid of your little yellow 2 door.
The Grand Cherokee would probably be grouped in with the Land Rover LR3 and LR4 (Discovery line) (I own one 3 and two 4's), and from what I can tell, the Grand Cherokee would be a great option for up to moderate terrain. Probably can't do the Rubicon out of the box, but someone who buys this won't be doing that in this vehicle anyway. Our LR's have taken us through A LOT of technical terrain and it's bar none the most comfy off-road vehicle in this class you can get. For Jeep fans, this would be the next best thing.
Jeep themselves have done the Rubicon Trail in a WL Trailhawk 4×E, not to mention it was in all electric mode. There's a few pictures floating around of them doing it. The bumpers look pretty shredded on the Grand Cherokee they used to do the trail in. More than a few people have done that trail in WK2 Trailhawks.
@@psychologicaltirefire8190 oh nice! A buddy of mine did it in an LR3 on 33” tires, but had to winch a lot. Not for the faint of heart in an IFS vehicle 😂
What kind of fuel economy in hybrid mode?
The full gas V6 Grand Cherokee Overland gets 26mpg. So this one should be able to meet and should beat that using a 2L 4banger. On the spec sheet for them they get 56MPGe...whatever that is.
I guess we’ll be seeing this as a new addition to the family?😂. Regena, will you consider trading in the Jeep you already have?
How many miles can it go when its fully charged
I believe it's around 26
Love that the 4xe has blue accents, but the blue with that red pearl color just kills me lol, clashes too much imo.
I agree, I think manufactures need to start moving away from blue or green accents to identify an electric vehicle.
Ironically I love the blue accents, be glad to buy a Trailhawk 4xe version and have the blue tow-hooks versus the old red. Totally personal preference.
@@michaelyoung3337 That's not what I meant. I absolutely love the blue on the 4xe, but the blue WITH the red body color is ugly.
I was planning on buying this thing, but they're not going to give it a Diesel engine.
Brad I love the channel but its hybrid not hybrEd. Not to be a jerk haha.
A friend just bought a grand Cherokee had it two months couldn’t wait to get rid of it his kids hated it when you close the rear doors the armrest hit you in the ribs very tight in the second row I believe he’s getting rid of it next week this is the first time I disagree with you I watch all your Content and love it keep it up
I am still not a fan of this Hybrid/electric technology when it comes to extended offroad travel. Easy or hard. If you have a problem with this new tech, it is not user friendly to repair.
Yup, that's the bad part with all this tech.
You know Regina needs a second vehicle
Does it come in Regina Yellow?
Edit: 11:14 - Nope.
That thing is going to self-destruct the day the warranty runs out.
5:40 - Brad, we officially saw that you are out ranked by your wife!!!
☺
I have the 4xe Wrangler and I’m telling you its a DIFFERENT vehicle compared to any of the other Jeeps I’ve ever owned. The gas + electric engine makes the Jeep Wrangler into a everyday comfort vehicle to drive.
I think this channel has given the 4xe wrangler a really bad rep.
offroad package with those tiny road tires?, lol
With the trouble you had with your 4xe I would think you would be hesitant to own one again.
A little hesitant, but I am rooting for electric vehicles to be successful... my heart still belong to internal combustion.
@@TrailRecon You mentioned in the video your driveway getting too full. You just need more driveway, not less vehicles. I am waiting for my PW order to come in so I can add to my fleet of 7 $x4s.
what trail was that
Court House Rock, in Moab, UT
Ver nice keep; but very expensive; video is👍😎😎😎😎😎
Agree, the 4xe ads a bit to the price for sure.
Great until it breaks! I think Jeep is on to something here, but I'll wait for Toyota to come up with equivalent Hybrid SUV, maybe like the GX460. And then that's the one I'll buy
Time will absolutely tell, but there is clearly something going on here.
really dislike the new Wagoneer
Grand Cherokees are really nice but they're getting way too expensive. Jeep is turning into a luxury brand because they know their customers will pay it. One of these modestly-equipped will probably be my next car in seven years or so, I don't want to go full EV. Hopefully by then Jeep will have given it more power and more EV range.
Grand Cherokees are so dang heavy and the 4xe is several hundred pounds more so I would hope it rides nice. I've driven a WK2 Grand Cherokee V6 and you can feel the weight.
Buy her one😂
You need a bigger driveway
Exactly what I keep saying!
Foot pounds of torque
