  • The Phantom of the Opera
    Live on Broadway
    February 28, 1988
Starring: Michael Crawford (The Phantom), Sarah Brightman (Christine), Steve Barton (Raoul), Nicholas Wyman (Firmin), Christopher Groenendaal (André), Judy Kaye (Carlotta), Leila Martin (Madame Giry), David Romano (Piangi), Elisa Heinsohn (Meg Giry)
Our celebration of the Broadway production of Phantom couldn't possibly be complete without featuring the original Broadway cast!
I can't think of too much to mention here--Michael Crawford gives, of course, his usual amazing performance as The Phantom. This is one of only four recordings of Sarah Brightman as Christine in the show so it's amazing to hear just for that. And, of course, the late great Steve Barton is playing Raoul whom remains one of the best, if not the best really, Raouls of all time.
Interesting to note regarding Steve--in the West End production, he actually was an understudy for The Phantom and covered Michael Crawford (making him the second person to ever play the part). However when they moved to Broadway, Steve didn't cover for the part--with the understudy being Jeff Keller. Steve would don the mask however when he took over the role as principle in 1990 on Broadway!
Other notes about some cast members: Here we can hear the late David Romano, whom sadly passed away in 2020, as Piangi. Chris Groenendaal, playing André, had an interesting journey with the show. He was the original Broadway André, and was an understudy for Raoul, but then in 1989 took over as The Phantom! He played the role on Broadway for a period of time, and then through the 1990s appeared in the Toronto production and in the Canadian touring production as The Phantom. And finally Leila Martin, Madame Giry, played the role for an incredibly long amount of time, playing the part into 2001!
This is a pretty good sounding audio, but it has an issue where some annoying clicks will start happening at random points. I did a lot of remastering to the audio to figure out how to improve this, and several moments patched up okay, but it's still not perfect. But I tried, haha!
    Enjoy!

To me, the first one, 1988, is the best one.

RUclips blocked the video in parts of the world because the Overture got the video a copyright claim. So it had to be cut out in order for the video to be able to be seen
