    You do need to get their hooves trimmed the oldest donkey's hooves are curling and it could make him lame. Any hoofed animals hooves need to be checked & trimmed back if they need it. You also should be checking them for any beginning of what we used to call hoof fungus or hoof rot. Our black smith used to come by or we would go to him. We were lucky he was also our 4-H Leader for our horses.

    I can't believe how people try to tell you how to run your farm especially if they don't themselves have a farm, or probably haven't even visited one. You are always thankful to those that do suggest things that have worked on their farms. You do an awesome job with the animals and the land. Blessings from Proctor Minnesota!

    Equine hooves should be trimmed every 8 weeks. Be careful when all of your fresh grass comes in to make certain your donkeys don't founder.

    I think it is amazing how well you have done with the chickens on the farm to date. I really expected some casualties early on as the predator load was exposed and as the chickens adapted to free ranging. One hen lost to misadventure. One unknown and the rooster to habitat change/heat stress is not bad. Your hens are thriving and loving life on the land

    Yes they need a trim. Have the farrier draw you a picture of what a trimmed hoof is supposed to look like so you know when it is time to call him back. Some donkeys get long toes and others have weak pasterns and walk on their heals. Have the farrier explain founder too that is very important as well.

    I highly recommend a basement, go big at the beginning of your build. No one regrets building just a bit more because renovations after the fact are more expensive and disruptive. Also with your high winds and tornado possibilities you have a safe place to shelter. Another plus is a big space for the boys to roughhouse and play inside during inclement weather. When my parents built their dream house in the ‘60s we kids took over in that unfinished space. Here in Ontario Canada all houses have basements or large crawl spaces. Thanks for sharing your lives and fulfilling your goals. I grew up as a country girl and my husband on a dairy farm.

    Down here in Texas, the double 18 pack of eggs is $15 right now. Going shopping tomorrow and if they have the box of 60 in stock, I'm going to get that because it's $19. I think Fred will finish faster than Mike's. They stay colder and dryer typically up there than Oklahoma. Warmth and dampness during spring should help, along with bugs. Yuck to think about, but it's real. Yes, the donkey is standing too tall on the hooves and it can damage the tendons and ligaments to walk like that for long. Texas Deb ❤️

  • @Simpleuserautumn
    @Simpleuserautumn 2 года назад

    We trim our donkeys every 4 to 6 months. Depending on roughness & texture of your ground plays a lot of factors on how often you may need to do them. Every animal is different and grows according to their own and their environment. Things such as concrete pads can help assist wear but like horses or any animal with hooves they should be checked regularly. You're not only looking to trim. It's important to check as there is all kinds of things that can occur underneath the hoof you cant see until you pick them up. Nails, fungus, white line disease, founder are just some of the common things to occur in the hooves. Hooves can tell a lot about an animal and its health when you know what you're looking for. As for your donkeys they are needing a trim it isn't dire at this stage but buhdonkadonks are starting to curve and curl which long term is really hard on their entire leg structure & alignment. With that I do recommend getting them done soon but it is not a 911. However I am not a vet or a certified trimmer so my best advice of all if you are truly unsure is to send a picture to your vet for their recommendation. :)
    *Edit* Mind you i can't see everyone's feet all to well in this video.
