How to cut the lace on a Ready to Wear wig | YES I DO! | TIP TUESDAY

- Today I want to talk about cutting the lace on your ready to wear lace front wig. Should you? Will it ruin the wig? HOW do you do it?
Cutting the lace is a viable option when the lace front isn't working for you. I often do it on Estetica wigs, for some reason the lace front on those seem to need it more than others for me personally. I have been doing this now for about a year and a half and have NEVER had it ruin the lace or cause it to fray. NEVER.

My measurements
○ Circumference= 22" (average)
○ Front of Hairline to nape of neck (over top of head)= 12.75" (average is 14.25")
○ Ear to ear over top of head= 12" (average is 13.5)
○ Temple to temple around back of head= 14.25
○ Hairline to eyebrow= 2.5"
○ Hairline to tip of nose= 4.75"
○ Hairline to bottom of chin= 8"

I cut the lace on the first wig I owned with small scissors and it frayed.☹️ I was able to stop it from further fraying by dabbing it with clear nail polish (I was desperate for a cure!) I ended up cutting in bangs anyway. I learned that those particular scissors were not SHARP enough. I had my husband cut my Jon Renau Haute with regular pinking shears while I covered my eyes. 🤦🏼♀️ No issues whatsoever. I believe that the scissors need to be fairly sharp so it’s not “chewing” on the lace. I’m going to have the lace on my On Point cut......by my husband. He’s a pro.😉 Thank you for this video and all you do for us wig sisters. You are a blessing!❤️

I did too over 10+Yrs ago on Zara, before I knew a thing about wigs & before any videos & community of wig wearers for us ladies with hair loss, or wearing wigs for fashion, were available for help.
This was great! I agree, the lace looked better once you were done.
So nice that you share so many helpful tips that are relatively a very inexpensive fix ( & take little time) to a lot of little things that might keep us from reaching for some pieces more often, just because some little "thing"doesn't feel or look just right to us. I think we are our own worst critics when it comes to how we appear to others.
I think a big part of this journey is learning how to tweak our pieces to make them our own & boost our confidence when wearing them. You, my dear, are most helpful in this process! Thanks.

Another excellent tutorial! I have the JR shears and have used it to cut lace fronts that do not sit flat against my forehead. My first time using them I was so scared I would mess up. It took a few times and now I'm happy to say, I'm much better at it. I do agree that a scalloped LF seamlessly melts into the forehead. The difficult part for me is lining up the pattern each time I cut back into the lace again (because you slowly want to make little cuts at a time) but again, it gets better each time you do it. Thanks again Denise. I appreciate your videos and teaching us these tricks and tips.

I have cut the lace on one lace front wig to accommodate my widows peak, and it was successful. I used nail shears, useful because mine, anyway, are slightly curved. They're also relatively small, so very maneuverable following a cut line. I was delighted, because it made a very good Gabor wig much more enjoyably wearable, and it improved the overall fit.

I love all these tips. I cut the lace off of one of my Jett wigs Because it was so itchy. I did lose a bit of the bangs, but not enough to notice. Now I can wear it all the time with no problem. I really appreciate your tips. (I have three Jett wig, and they’re all pretty old so I Wasn’t worried about it. Also, I tried the tip of soaking one in vinegar….much softer now.

It was a help. I had a wig I got on sale and it had a lot of lace and it looks like someone had tried to thin out the front and it made the lace look like even more so I trimmed the lace and it helped. I was nervous but I had just watched your video so I went for it. Thank you for all your great help.

Just slowly trimmed my Ellen Wille FAME, I thought it looked good before, but OH MY the lace line totally disappears! Thank You so much for doing this on camera. :) ...when I take it off tonight I will make sure the lace is soaking wet before I remove it.

Awesome tips! I am a lace trimmer. Almost every wig. Like you, I don’t like a demarcation line, and I prefer the look of less lace. I have used both pinking shears and regular scissors with success on several brands. I’ve never had lace fray or stretch with either. I do find the pinking shears harder to work with, but I like the finished product better with them. Go figure. Loved the tutorial - very helpful! p.s. love the new bathroom look!

Thanks Denise for this video. I had an older wig that the lace was fraying a bit but it's still a good around the house wig. After watching your video I thought it was a perfect wig to try this on. It actually worked great! It took me 10 minutes of moving it around to make that first cut but then it was easier, just as you said! Oh, and I LOVE your remodeled bathroom!!!

Great video! I should probably buy a pair of pinking shears. I have been using fingernail scissors to cut lace, and I usually cut it right up to the hairline because I don't like seeing that 'line of demarcation" as you called it. You are right that it is not at all visible after you used the shears, so thank you!

Denise, I have trimmed three wigs, first with scissors which I neededto fix because I was cutting off hair fibers; decided I might have more control with my quilting rotary cutter. I now use my quilting rotary cutter, sparingly, because I find the pinking edge feels itchy to me. I do find that the reason I trim to begin with is because of itching along the lace front edge, which leads to fraying, so I never seriously considered using the pinking shears. The third wig I trimmed was my Raquel Welch, InCharge. I’ve only had my InCharge wig for 6 weeks, and at 4 weeks it was already frayed. Straight scissors didn’t allow me to get close enough, but perhaps I’m more comfortable using rotary cutters than the average person. It worked out well and definitely stopped the itching. I have to say I like the look of lace fronts, but not the itching.
I have heard a few wig sisters share that lace fronts are itchy to them... what a bummer. Have you tried using It Stays to adhere them? I find when I just plot a wig on and don't adhere it then it does start to get itchy but when I adhere it that totally takes care of it because it doesn't allow the wig to move which is what causes the itching a lot of the time. That is a great question.... I have been told that some people cut the lace unevenly and cut it way back where their widow's peak is so that it doesn't cover it. I've also been told that some people shave it so it doesn't show, and some use some makeup to make it less obvious. I don't have one so unfortunately can't give you first hand knowledge but I just posted this question on my community page and hope those with experience will respond..... here is a link to that page so you can watch the comments. Do you ever use Stop Fray on your lace fronts? I’m not game to use it, wondered if it thickens/hardens the lace and damages it? Builds up on the lace? Help 😳
I tried it once and it was a disaster. It dried hard and white. I've heard others say they have used it successfully but my one experience makes me think it isn't a good solution. I don't know how you would use it do it wouldn't look obvious....

I don't have any lace-front wigs but this was very interesting and you had me chewing my nails. Har-har-har. But I agree, once you trimmed it and put it back on it truly melted into your skin/forehead.

The lace on my newest wig was so scratchy, I watched you video and trimmed right along with you. I’m a newbie, never had irritation from lace edge before. It’s better but still irritates a bit.

I use the scalloped, but either works as the difference is very subtle.

I saw one person cut the lace with pinking shears so it wouldn't fray. I know in sewing that works, cutting fabric with pinking shears, the material won't fray. I'm a bangs girl so I don't care too much if there's a lace front or not.

Me too!! These feel like King Kong picking shears!!! LOL 😂! I also have a problem with the lace not sticking to my head. It always sticks out in places and I keep having to press it back down. Don’t know if anything can help that?!
@@susiepalmer1977 I have a wig that does that and It Stays helps. Are you wearing anything under your wig? When I have tried a wig grip I find the lace doesn't lay flat due to the extra bulk.

Yes I use it stays and I have to wear a wig grip. All the wigs I have come in average. All of them are too big even when I tighten the size straps. I even have to cris cross the bra type straps!! So I don’t know really what else to do! 😔
@@susiepalmer1977 Oh gosh, that IS a challenge... I think between the wig being too big for you and the bulk of the wig grip you are going to find it difficult to get that lace to lay flat. Have you ever tried to make a wig cap smaller? I have seen it done before by just sewing together a few wefts... I have been planning to try it so I can show it on a tip tuesday. Wondering if that would help so you don't have to wear a wig grip? I will have to figure out how to get that filmed ASAP!
