Favorite thing about the Deku/Bakugo relationship. Deku is the only person that calls him Kachan, a childhood nickname and sign of being close friends.
And no matter how much he complains, Bakugo ALWAYS answers Deku when he calls him. He never stopped being his friend, even when he antagonize him (which also has its own possible reason of care in the abrasive Bakugo way)

    • @dazzle3b73
      @dazzle3b73 10 месяцев назад +17

Absolutely! It's like someone said from another reaction. Bakugo and Deku's dynamic is not solely toxic on Bakugo's side (I also know for a fact that the latter is protecting more than purely hurting his friend). True, there are better ways to get your point across without humiliating your childhood friend at every opportunity, but in a way, Deku also antagonises Bakugo by always giving him opportunities.
On one hand, Bakugo does everything in his power to keep him away, to put as much distance as possible, whereas kind-hearted Deku sticking close, helping/saving Bakugo throughout their lives is tantamount to a provocation.
That's why the whole "I chase after you because you're the image of winning" line _hits._

I do like that Deku decides to fight back just for the fact that he is respecting Bakugo's wish the one time he is able to be honest about his inner feelings, some might argue it's immature that he endulges the battle, but I think it really was an emotionally intelligent decision given their history, if he hadn't fought back it would have only enforced Bakugo's belief that Deku is "looking down on him"

I second the point about Bakugo’s character being written masterfully. His character arc is genuinely one of best combinations of interesting and well paced that I’ve ever seen. And I can’t emphasize the pacing part enough; it’s so easy and frankly common for a character to achieve change like a switch has been flicked rather than making progress gradually. The fact that Bakugo avoids this flaw is one of the reasons he’s my favorite MHA character, the other being that he’s just so damn funny 😂.

Same, this is my favorite MHA episode, and the one that made Bakugo my favorite character. It made me so hype to see him progress even more, and the payoffs later on are insane. This may be a hot take, but I honestly think this fight is one of the best in the show and in Shonen anime. The animation, the music, the revelations, the character development, the voice acting, everything. Justin Briner and Clifford Chapin were absolutely incredible in this episode and when people complain that the dub for this show is bad I just think of this and remind myself that some people just can't be satisfied no matter how incredible the VA talent is. I always find myself going back to this fight or the AllMight vs AFO fight when I need a jolt of excitement in my anime lull.

This episode is the stuff of legends. The character depth and growth is absurd through one of MHA’s BEST looking fights. They went ALL OUT. It’s not my #1 episode in the show but you would be ABSOLUTELY justified to say it is your #1. The setup and payoff of this fight is OUTSTANDING. I’ll cover story implications here. I wanna geek out about the fight itself separately because there’s SO MUCH.
Now that Bakugo has figured out that Deku has All-Might’s quirk, and has put together AFO’s connection to All-Might, AND the Nomus…there’s really no other option than for Deku to not just say yes it’s true, that he is LITERALLY All-Might’s successor. THE chosen one. (Which is honestly one of the only pieces of protection Deku has from being found out. Chosen ones in real life just DO NOT happen) And this revelation is genuinely confusing to Bakugo. Bakugo was HORRIFIED when Deku was 1st using OFA. And he did EVERYTHING he could to insult Deku’s quirk to maintain his control. And now he has realized Deku’s power is the same one that makes All-Might INDESTRUCTIBLE to EVERYONE. For Deku to be called WORTHY, All-Might saw something in Deku. And that LITERALLY doesn’t compute for him. And he assumed it HAD to be how Deku admired him. There is LITERALLY no other reason with Deku’s skill, his character, his personality, his charisma, or ANYTHING that Bakugo could so much as JUSTIFY being the cause for such a decision. Because if it was ANY of those things, how would BAKUGO be unworthy when he has all these things over Deku? (From his perspective. Probably not best to tell the kid on the verge of a breakdown his personality for being the most influential hero title is NOT ideal) This is BAFFLING to him.
And since he can’t see how All-Might made his decision, he can only think of one way to figure it out. Fight. Sure Deku had none of the benefits that Bakugo did with his quirk, skill, and battle intellect but will that show NOW. And Bakugo is using the same logic he used in the All-Might battle. Doesn’t matter the trouble he’s in, he is ALWAYS the winner. And Deku is kinda known for taking lots of L’s even though the outcomes he always gets are always beneficial. And Bakugo LITERALLY slaps away the reasons as Deku shows them the reason over and over. Deku doesn’t deny the fight, and doesn’t defend himself as much as he defends Bakugo. Through ENDLESS opposition he still shows MAXIMUM selflessness. He’s not here for himself, there’s nothing he can really benefit from this. Not the fight, not AGREEING to come out here, not to answer his questions. He’s here FOR Bakugo. To clear up his doubts, and yes, AGREEING to the bullying if it means he can hear him. And hopefully FINALLY clear the air around the two of them. Can he? NOPE. Because that’s not why BAKUGO is here. He’s not here to understand Deku. He’s here to understand All-Might. And the only way to get to that is THROUGH Deku.
But then the next hammer drops. Bakugo breaks a layer of his IMMENSE guard. He is facing TREMENDOUS amounts of guilt. Bakugo is facing guilt for All-Might his IDOL collapsing and retiring BECAUSE of the mission he saved Bakugo on. Saving him came at the cost of the World’s LITERAL #1 hero. And because he wasn’t strong enough, because he couldn’t live up to the ideal he had always wanted for himself, because the villains saw what kind of guy HE is, HE is responsible. If that sounds familiar…it’s practically VERBATIM what Mitsuki Bakugo screamed at Katsuki while swatting him repeatedly. Yes that scene is very jokey and they gloss over it. But the effect has remained. And as much as I laugh AT that Bakugo family scene, I intentionally didn’t treat it as a joke while analyzing knowing how it ultimately feeds RIGHT into this heartbreaking scene. It DOES affect him. And with how the media slandered Bakugo for being a victim LIKE his mom did. People often just disregard an argument when it basically boils down to “It’s not fair!” But here? It REALLY isn’t. He wanted to be his kind of hero and was targeted by 10 professional villains, kidnapped, they tried to BRAINWASH him and even got the ONLY person stronger than All-Might to deal with him. For trying to live for his ideals. And THIS is why Bakugo was so out of sorts during the Provisional Licensing exam. He stayed away from EVERY comfortable aspect of his character in the tests. He didn’t run into the heat of battle, he didn’t really battle cry, he didn’t do ANY of the things that Bakugo has been so built on doing in this story BECAUSE this was weighing on him like a freaking anchor.
And Deku the ever loving selfless understanding guy just knows, there’s no way to walk away from him. He can’t leave him. But he knows if he DOES stay, Bakugo will continue to fight. So he makes it official on Bakugo’s terms. He has to fight as the symbol All-Might chose him to be. The best HE can be. The legacy, the world’s most powerful quirk. And with that decision, Bakugo shows HIS All-Might smile to show what he wants to prove against it.
He has to show his dominance, his defiance, his control. And it has to be OVER Deku looking down on him as this hallow figure before him….or at least that’s what it’s SUPPOSED to be. Because we aren’t getting to the root of Bakugo facing the symbol. We’ve gotten to the root of why Bakugo hates Deku. Their line of thinking although are at the same drive level, are COMPLETELY at odds in how they function. Their personalities are truly oil and water. Bakugo is a VERY selfish person going up against someone that is the absolute embodiment of selflessness. And in a way, yes, that IS a threat to him. But not because Deku is imposing his dominance by looking down on him, but because Deku has the ultimate hero personality and things are stacked in his favor to BE the new #1.
But that’s not how Deku has EVER seen it. He’s here listening and mimicking some of your moves, learning from you, and trying to be like you, following you because he has an IMMENSE respect and admiration for Bakugo’s talents in spite of ALL the hellish bullying, pain he causes, attempts to humiliate him and SO much more for JUST how much crap Bakugo has put him through. An ENDLESS list of that. But at the end of the day, Bakugo always wins. And Deku almost always loses, but with the most favorable results possible. And he doesn’t want the most favorable LOSS, he wants the most favorable win and looks to the guy who will do ANYTHING to prove himself the best without dirty tactics. And THAT wins over ANY horrible thing Bakugo does to bully him. And this is all in the name of a friendship that quite frankly just no longer exists. But he values this pursuit to see what he becomes on the same level as BEING THE NEW SYMBOL. This isn’t a dream fulfillment, this is a part of his life he wants to repair.
Bakugo just REFUSES to let Deku get his true win over him and just puts an end to the fight the MOMENT he doubts if he can actually win. And he’s left in absolute conflict. Like Deku said, this couldn’t possibly be about just winning. Bakugo was in a Lose-Lose no matter WHAT. Bakugo won, but he knows All-Might the STRONGEST would NEVER with this power. How is it POSSIBLE to lose with this power. And if Deku won, he would have lost to DEKU.
Thankfully All-Might FINALLY comes in as his full dad mode. All-Might’s best mode to clear the air. This was SO needed for Bakugo. And as All-Might made one simple political dodge as Bakugo basically pleaded with himself of why wasn’t HE worthy of OFA. No matter what All-Might said about Deku being powerless and his heroic ideals, Bakugo said and I DON’T have that? And the answer is Bakugo worthy? The answer is sadly no. He isn’t. He has all this, but can’t continue All-Might’s legacy or be a symbol of peace. (Bakugo is so peaceful) And Bakugo catches the political dodge because All-Might DEFINITELY doesn’t blame Bakugo for the AFO fight, but also starts balancing the tightrope when he asks is he worthy. And All-Might’s answer is you two can help each other be the best you can BOTH be and be higher than anything you can imagine. And All-Might PERSONALLY kickstarts their rivalry.
AND THE RIVALRY IS TOXIC. After getting through ALL of this fighting, they aren’t mended. Bakugo FINALLY found mutual respect to found a proper rivalry and he accepts All-Might’s decision…and OFA the power. And he wants to compete with the chosen one. The symbol. The holder. Or in actuality…the power. If you listen to Bakugo closely he accepts All-Might. But anything, and I mean ANYTHING Deku has that’s personal to himself and not his authority or power is seen as stupid, wrong, unskilled, flawed, and more. He’s looking at it more genuinely yes but he’s STILL coming to that conclusion. Because he doesn’t accept DEKU as a person. OFA lost because DEKU has it. And he wants to help Deku for All-Might’s sake. NOT for Deku. The road from bully and victim HAS moved up but the road is SO long. Deku has accommodated Bakugo EVERY WAY HE CAN. But Bakugo? Has only accommodated All-Might.
Speaking of All-Might, I LOVE his competition idea because it connects their lines of thinking despite their INSANE differences. But pro tip All-Might. When checking on kids to see if they are alright, try ACKNOWLEDGING THE ONE LAYING HEAD FIRST IN A CRATER THAT YOU PROMISED HIS MOM YOU WOULD RAISE AS A DAD. Yet ANOTHER major incident for Deku where he’s not even CHECKED ON afterward and is scolded up and down for DEFENDING himself.
This story between these two is IMMENSELY complicated but SO great. And I just wanna gush on the GREAT fight with their potential they moved up to.

There’s genuinely so much fight stuff to just gush all day on I wanted to just cover it separately from the story BECAUSE this episode just goes SO HARD.
It all starts as it began. The training exercise in season 1. Fake hooks, running from the bully trying DESPERATELY to gain control, and just the inevitability when he felt cornered. Except THIS time Deku wasn’t in any desperation, he nearly EFFORTLESSLY kept back this time around. And the massive difference between there being no value in the fight and knowing he’s completely outmatched is STARK. And Bakugo is a very instinctive fighter rather than an analytical/strategist like Deku is. Which is great because those are natural counters too.
Deku’s development which is always INSANELY fast always puts things in perspective for how strong other kids have gotten to keep up with him. What we know about Bakugo is he boiled his hands to make better chains and open up his sweat glands for larger explosions. So his speed, power, and combos have all improved. So we get to see how crazy his old moves have gotten and how he can use his new moves.
Bakugo is using similar strategy against All-Might between the stun grenade, correcting getting much closer when they’re blinded. (Against All-Might he did it like several buildings away and couldn’t get close enough in time for All-Might to see him coming leading to the great face grab) He’s not really bothering with the mini blasts at all. His shockwaves are blasting out the windows of the training ground at pretty large distances. And the heat from his explosions has to be CRAZY. His flying acrobatics is at a much higher speed too. And he’s creating long lasting fireballs and chains too. Theres a LOT of potential for more complex moves in this fight in the future.
When you see him back in his full combat form, you can see JUST how much he didn’t do in the provisional exam. At this pace he quite honestly could have been in the heat of the entire testing ground going after the class at the start. So little can hold him down. It’s true the rescue exam was always going to result in his failure, but not engaging with Gang Orca with a quirk that is highly beneficial was SUCH a noticeable choice. Based on what I’m seeing there’s 3 stages to Bakugo’s quirk. The explosion, the shockwave, and the wind current that follow. And controlling each individual stage could REALLY throttle his progress.
Then there’s Deku. Having the OFA armor of full cowling stop nearly EVERYTHING Bakugo did to him is insane. He doesn’t even have any shirt scuffs and gets off with only scratches from Bakugo just WAILING on him. A mere COUGH from getting decked in the gut so hard he dents a metal fence. That has to HURT but considering what the effect was, it’s a drop in the bucket. Deku’s HEAD hit the fence and it caved enough to KEEP his head in place. And then Deku does the unthinkable to both Bakugo, and himself. With his jump from 5% to 8%, he PASSED Bakugo. I’ve waited long enough. I was waiting for THIS moment for so long. (The sound effect of Deku raising his energy level is identical to the sound effect of FMA’s portal of truth) When Deku is running and saying “All-Might is my hero but you were the one ACTUALLY in my life” he looks like he’s running like a normal person. To him, his perspective just didn’t change much at ALL. But then when we look from NOT his perspective, he literally blasts across the city block in an instant. At a speed Bakugo didn’t know how to react to. And his movement was SO fast it burned Bakugo’s arms. Bakugo has heat resistance in his quirk.
I’ve gone GREAT lengths to show All-Might’s drop in power, and the power drop AGAIN in the form of Deku’s hold on OFA. (All-Might passed a small ember that WILL BECOME not IS a raging inferno.) What I have to do NOW is build it back up. I had to create a path for Deku’s development that will inevitably land on All-Might’s strength that both accounts for OFA’s power drop AND its insane development making it the strongest quirk in the world. I said Deku in season 2 moved about 57 mph at 5%, and for the majority of season 3 directly after Muscular I said he was moving 92 mph at the same %. Deku has stockpiled to a new level with his training and testing. The method that makes the most sense for Deku’s development is his control and his arsenal grow at the same rate. It’s not 1% at a time because the show would never get anywhere if that’s what it did and the development for Deku is just WAY too fast. (Deku learned how to use full cowling like a few WEEKS ago. A month tops) All-Might outclasses him WAY too much in his performances even when Deku has USED 100%. (The collateral amount isn’t even CLOSE at ANY point. And that’s why Deku didn’t START at All-Might power but a small ember) If you use this method, no matter HOW Deku’s power increases, it will land at the same level as All-Might when he passed OFA to Deku. Deku MASTERED 100% would land at Mach 30. 2,000% to Deku’s original 100%. 20x stronger than his 1st smashes at Mach 1.5.
I am WELL aware people don’t like this theory because it’s long…and it’s mathy. So I do the math for you to show how a change in the 100% arsenal can change EVERYTHING. And in a way that fits the show. This is how I measured Deku for his new 8% level.
8/5=1.6, 1.6*100=160% is how I got his new 100% to work with (so Deku’s 100% WAS Mach 1.5, but now it’s Mach 2.4.)
    -Then took the % from that. 5% of 160 is 8, (5% of Mach 2.4 is 92 mph) 8% of 160 is 12.8. (8% of Mach 2.4 is 147 mph.)
It ALWAYS lands at 2000 once 100% mastery is reached this way, which lines up perfectly with All-Might saying Deku’s 100% smashes in season 2 were a mere 5% of what All-Might uses in that season. It leaves out the 1/60th drop All-Might got from AFO in their 1st fight when they both got critical injuries, but that level can’t be forgotten either. Deku can’t complete his story WITHOUT a power up of the same value. I have gone tooth and nail through the OFA dialogue to find what fits the feats and rules. And this accounts for every rule I could find. I don’t think Horikoshi did the math like I did, I think he just wrote OFA to always be building to the All-Might feats and stockpiling all the way there. But once All-Might was MEASURED to be Mach 30 in season 1, it just opened the door to find the speeds with a Mach speed calculator.
This also means that for the new level Deku’s kinetic vision is better, it means his reflexes are better, and since he has more energy stabilized, that also means he has less bone potential damage if he were to let loose a 100% smash.
The fact Bakugo can keep pace with this higher gear, even if it’s because it’s predictable shows that as of now he can ABSOLUTELY keep up right now. But that’s one HECK of a quirk to keep pace with. It’s charged for 200 freaking years at an INSANE growth rate. We’ll have to see if he can maintain such stark increases. But a good hearty comet slam is a good start.
I don’t think I can gush about this fight anymore than I have because EVERYONE gushes about how great this fight is. Finding the ins and outs is super rewarding too. The amount of moves stepped up from earlier seasons is STAGGERING and you just know what we see here won’t be forgotten either. MHA is in peak form.

@@HaydrogenBomb that’s where I lose everyone. All I’m pointing out is Deku’s 5 to 8% jump is WAY larger than ANYONE gives it credit for, (his power increased significantly BEFORE this fight and this is the 1st time he used something other than 5%) and I just did the math to make his power control and maximum output grow at the same rate. It’s complicated, but it plugs in to all the information All-Might has told us about OFA and that this way he is stockpiling. And matches the difference of power All-Might stated Deku was using in early season 2 right before he fought Shinso.

Especially with deku next to him constantly treating him normal while he had no powers himself becoming the crack that eventually go bigger breaking the view of himself that he felt he needed to be because of expectations.

Definitely one of the best fights in the series not just because of the animation or the choreography, but because of the storytelling.
Bakugou finally defeats Deku in a one on one fight...and it doesn't make him feel better at ALL. But opening up to Deku and All-Might and accepting his own vulnerabilities DOES.
This is the episode that made me start to really like Bakugou...because he finally grew up.

With respect to Montana, winning the fight DIDN'T validate Bakugo. In fact it was quite the opposite.
While Bakugo never wants to lose, losing to Midoriya is what would have validated Bakugo's worldview. "Strength is what matters. I've been failing and All Might chose Deku over me because I'm weak. That makes sense." But instead, even with All Might's power Midoriya still lost to him, meaning that it wasn't Midoriya being stronger or better than Bakugo that got All Might to take him under his wing. Instead of validating Bakugo's worldview and beliefs beating Midoriya served to make Bakugo only further question everything he believed and start on his journey of properly reevaluating himself and how he acts.

I can't believe people keep missing the theme of Midoriya and Bakugo and their relation to All Might. Midoriya always admired the "saving people with a smile" part of All Might, hence watching the video as a child all the time. And Bakugo admired All Might through his "No matter how much trouble he's in he's always the winner". This evolves into Bakugo representing the "Always win" part of All Might, and Midoriya representing the "Save people with a smile" part of All Might. You can also see this in the Heroes Rising movie. So they're 2 sides of the same All Might coin.

Something I thought about is the whole Bakugo blaming himself for "ending" All Might. While that's the way he looks at it, if you look at it from a different point of view, you could argue that him being kidnapped when he did and the resulting situation actually allowed allmight to go into that fight with enough in the tank to actually beat A.F.O. If Bakugo hadn't been kidnapped, that fight would've likely still had to happen at a later time, at which point All might might not of had the strength to win.
