When I was a kid (boomer), we had a four foot tall Zenith radio that had at least three different dials that could access every continent, every jungle, and probably every planet. It glowed like magic but my personal theory was that every character, every voice, and every sound effect played upon my imagination. From "Gang Busters" to "Fibber McGee and Molly" to "Dick Tracy" the sound effects were the environment of my imagination. So, too...that ironic and absolutely frightening laugh of the "Shadow" was sinister, or ironic, or foreshadowing...but at least, I can now enjoy the perfect serial from the perfect time, of what used to be a perfect age. I was never really much into superheroes or the "vigilante detective" genre in general, but I really like The Shadow! I remember reading the novelization of the Alec Baldwin version back when I was a teenager, then listened to a few of the old radio broadcasts on DVD, read a couple of the stories, and back in Dec. I finally watched the movie when it was available on YT! I enjoyed this serial, though I don't think it's necessarily the best interpretation of the lore, plus the "Lin Chang" get-up hasn't exactly aged well. But it was fun and it was funny how basically every episode ended with Cranston surviving an explosion and getting buried alive 🤣👍

Although she screams of ten, Margo shows a lot more gumption than most heroines in serials. She kicks bad guys in the shins, tries to escape on her own and in general not a passive female stereotype.
Never mind the 'stereotypes'. This is entertainment, profitable entertainment, and that's what kept Hollywood in business until it fell apart during the 1960's and succumbed to Political Correctness. More recently that is called 'wokeism'.
I don't know where this passive female character idea comes from. The vintage movies are MUCH more realistic about what women are really like as not passive & just as vicious, conniving & deadly as men if not MORE than men. No beating around the bush back then! Nossir. Today's shows are stupidly unrealistic showing them as all powerful superheros, or all as victims of some made up patriarchy they are supposed to be fighting, or some imaginary skin color or genital war they've also made up. It's all so ridiculous. No. Compared to what comes out of Hollywood in the last couple decades VS old Hollywood old Hollywood was much more honest, even if not full of vile language & vulgarity & exploitation of female nudity to "make a point". @@AtomicAgePictures I noticed that one of the inspirations for The Shadow may have been the French serial 'Judex'. I just got that on dvd last month. It's well worth watching.
@@AtomicAgePictures When I was a kid here in the UK, I can only remember one home-grown British serial (no idea what it was called, but it was basically about the crime-solving adventures of a group of schoolboys. They showed it at a holiday camp that I went to in my summer school vacation.) When we went to the movies, there would be a main feature, plus a B movie, plus a newsreel, one or two cartoons, a couple of trailers for forthcoming movies, some advertisements for local businesses and mainstream products, and a serial. Great value for money in those days. There would also be Saturday morning cinema shows for children, comprising of cartoons and a serial. Many years later, a television channel would show Adventures of Captain Marvel over a couple of weeks, and one or two independent cinemas would occasionally show an old serial with whatever usually art house/cult type film they were showing. What I don't understand is why no contemporary director has realised that if he made serials nowadays he could easily make a lot of money by selling them to television or movie distributors. Indiana Jones would have worked well as a serial. As director George Lucas admitted, he was heavily influenced by the old chapterplays. Although nowadays I would expect much more cynical humour and wisecracking to give them more heart, something the serials generally lacked.
This is a PURE AMERICAN story ... because - as the title crawl states - it is "Industrial leaders" who are interested in fighting the terrorist ... and NOT "political figures" who would be the ones actually responsible for the fighting (but could still be consulting Cranston for being outclassed by the Black Tiger). This focus on the "money-making figures" is the "american part".
I used to listen to The Shadow when I was small on Radio. WOW. That was a long time ago. Thought I'd see if I could remember any of it or if it's been to long. I'll let you know.
At about 59:05, as Cranston enters the laboratory, Margot replies to him in a lower-volume voice than his. **That may seem like trivia, but it shows the audience that someone standing closer will sound louder. Think about that in everyday conversation.
The Shadow meets The Green Hornet. Victor Jory (Lamont Cranston/The Shadow) would guest star on The Green Hornet (1966~'67) TV show playing a criminal.
What a fun series. Some of the special effects were hoaky and the fight scenes goofy but still lots of fun to watch. I like how they had Shadow's female assistant scream at every little problem she endured. Never understood the usefulness of screaming when in danger, it doesn't solve the problem and only creates more chaos.

Everyone remember that shadow was pulp fiction. The radio show or this are not the real shadow story its not a comic book. If want to read the real shadow get one of the books. Not one they tried to bring him back with in the 70s. Oh and batman is a kid friendly version of the shadow no .45 pistols bringing death to enemies
Actually The Shadow debuted on July 31, 1930, as the mysterious narrator of the radio program Detective Story Hour, which was developed to boost sales of Street & Smith's monthly pulp Detective Story Magazine. When listeners of the program began asking at newsstands for copies of "that Shadow detective magazine", Street & Smith launched a magazine based on the character.
4 Cops. Commissioner: "Men, Surround the entire estate." (Priceless.) I had a large collection of the Shadow pulps. Then I joined the Air force in 1973. When I returned home I could not find them. I asked my mother where they were. She said "You're too old for comic books so I gave them to the Good Will." The tears I shed were not "Tears of Joy..." I have always like the Shadow. This brings back good memories and I am thankful to have ran across this.
There is a german movie version of an Edgar Wallace story from 1931 ... and the Police are surrounding the estate of Maurice Messer to guard him. Then an officer comes up in a car ... blows a whistle loudly ... and announces a change in shift ... "but KEEP A LOW PROFILE". It is also winter and the whole ground is covered in snow with the Policemen sticking out like ... well a blind man without a cane would have noticed them.
We had 4 "Shadow Magazine" reprints in our public library 30 or so years ago. When they moved into their new building they disappeared. IIRC Walter Gibson was his creator.
Yeah my mother did the same thing to me. I moved away for about ten months to go to work at 18 years old and when I came home to pack and move permanently I found all my comics and hockey cards gone. I asked her where they were and she said she'd thrown them out and said I didn't need those anymore. The garbage was picked up only the previous day. Well I sure could use them now considering there was many first additions in the comics like SPIDER MAN AND SUPER MAN and I also had Wayne Gretzky's and Bobby Ore's rookie cards. Many many thousands of dollars GONE! I quit looking at the prices they are worth some time ago because every time I did it just made me sick.
@@jerryleroy9187 My mom "misplaced" my collection of 45 records, about 150 of them dating from 1958-1969 when I left for the navy. "I didn't throw them out," she said, "I just don't know where they are." Right, Mom.
If you want something in the same vein as The Shadow, you should listen to The Tales of the Red Panda, from Decoder Ring Theater. They really are good, Gregg Taylor and his cast do an excellent job.
I didn't understand why the Shadow or his helper never thought of taking the rotor off or pulling off the coil wire. Autos won't start if that should happen.

Pop and a bag of caramel corn for 50 cents.
Gran aporte !. Gracias !.
Who knows what lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!
Too bad they couldn't get Orson Welles to play the Shadow!
great !!!
Gotta love the
old Pulp style settings almost reminds me of the Giallo movies 😊😊
You mean those films the giallo remind you of these
I've read about 50 novels. I have a CD of 200+ more I want to read.
Of Shadow Magazine or individual Shadow stories? Where'd you get it?
The yellow face disguise is incredibly offensive.
It was a different time
If you want something in the same vein as The Shadow, you should listen to The Tales of the Red Panda, from Decoder Ring Theater. They really are good, Gregg Taylor and his cast do an excellent job.
2 things about these old flicks; 1) all the cars are cool and 2) everybody packs a .38 :)
I didn't understand why the Shadow or his helper never thought of taking the rotor off or pulling off the coil wire. Autos won't start if that should happen.
Interesting that Lamont Cranston is a disguise for THE SHADOW.
CLASSIC
Oh yes ... because acid is flammable.
Harry Vincent is driving a cab and not Sherevvy?
Just how does the Black Panther disappear in that cloud of Fog ??
